So we tested the Extrema Ratio AMF and put it through hell.... Can you depend your life on this knife? Is this the Knife you should have gotten from your stingy country where you put your life for on the line? Find out in todays episode!

    I spent 29 years and 10 months in the US Army. I never got issued anything but an M9 bayonet. They treated those like firearms and took them back and locked them in the arms room when we got back from the field. We were discouraged from carrying “Rambo” knives. I had Korean customs seize a Cold Steel Kobun I tried to bring into South Korea with my military equipment. Mostly we carried small folding knives. I knew of some people who actually got issued the Benchmade AFO automatic knife in Bosnia. I mostly carried cheap pocket knives I wasn’t afraid to lose, or a Spyderco Delica 4. I primarily used a knife for opening MREs, cutting 550 cord, and opening boxes and packages. I never had occasion to baton wood or stab anyone the whole time I was in the US Army. I did need to cut foliage to camouflage fighting positions and sometimes used a machete for that, but honestly the ideal tool for that task was small handheld pruning shears.

    • @Maryland_Kulak
      @Maryland_Kulak 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@EireGenX I think the Benchmade AFO had a National Stock Number, meaning it could be procured through the supply system. I have one I bought but I don’t like it because it’s too heavy and it’s half serrated. I hate serrated knives. Plus it cost $200 so if I lost it in the field I’d cry. A Dollar Tree pocket knife will open MREs and cut paracord just as well and if I lose it I’m only out $1.25. Seriously, Walmart was selling some excellent folding knives a few years ago (Ozark Trails) for $3.88. There are several TH-cam videos about them.

      If I were packing my bags to go to war right now, I’d pack a Cold Steel Kobun or Tanto Lite, and a couple of Spyderco Delica 4s. Please review the Extrema Ratio Operarive 39-09 and Nimbus for survival situations and see if they hold up. My colleagues and I are discussing the claim, “they’re made for extreme military survival situations.” Although they’re modified daggers designs, so we’re curious how they hold up to batoning etc.
    Please do a video on those two knives and let us know how they handle please!!
    - Army Vet here
    Thanks for all you both do! Great reviews!

    If the tang was long enough to taper down & tread it. Would make for a stronger join. And shape the finger stop at the back to fit more comfortable. Only things I'd change.

    Hi. Do you think this knife is better or is fallkniven a1pro better? Which one should I choose as a survival knife?

  • @timwhite5562
    @timwhite5562 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What are they cutting on the edge tester? A hair? Or something more consistent?
    I'd think as long as that tang fits snuggly in the handle, the pin breaking wouldn't be likely. And as far as survival knives go, I don't think it's ugly at all.

    Looks good. The only downfall of it for me is that bolt loosening. Ideally you don’t want bits of the knife to be able to come off at some point when you’re out in the field.

    From Extrema Ration I like the tanto shaped knifes like the Selvans, Fulcrum, T4000. Those would be much better for the army I think.

    First, the kabar is a Marine knife. American soldiers aren't issued Marine gear. Second, soldiers aren't issued a knife of any kind other than a bayonet. It's entirely up to the individual GIs to buy whatever knife they carry. Third, even the Marines haven't been issued kabars in decades.

    I think it would be awesome to see you both test a Chris Reeve Knives Pacific. In my opinion, it falls under the same category as this Extrema Ratio. Love the channel!!

    • @mrdarren1045
      @mrdarren1045 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the original Pacific that has the gun coat and the serrations. I've seen it now without serrations and a different coating. I'm not sure I'd consider these to be genuine Chris Reeve knives though, being how he has left the company and has had no input into these models. I do know that he was often asked to produce the green beret and the Pacific without serrations but would always refuse for whatever reason. So to a hardcore collector I'm not sure these newer models have the same sort of prestige that the older ones have.

    But the U.S Army doesn't issue knives typically. I always had to buy my own. Pilots may be different, but people on the ground usually only get a bayonet and then they take them away mid tour. I bought a Benchmade Nimravus tanto and it did good opening MRE's, scraping dirt out from under my fingernails, carving some stuff, cutting 550 cord, shaving some arm hair off to see if my sharpening skills were still good. My pocket knife got far more use and I didn't stab anyone with it either. Used a lighter to build fires. I did eventually learn that different blade steels work better or worse with fire starters. I had one on me, but the lighter was more convenient. Just kept extras in sandwich bags.

    Nice one. It looks almost exaclty like the Gerber BMF from the 1980s 1990s. BLade shape, the pomel, even the holes in the blade guard. Also the sheath is similar.
    I think the old Gerber BMF looks better with it´s black handle.
    In case you like the Extrema Ratio AMF also take a look at the Gerber BMF.

    Also, you'll get better performance if you pitch the edge back to make it a real cutter. That edge you are polishing is just for shipping, it's beveled like an axe head, so it will only get somewhat sharp. File it back about 8-10mm, and it will be razor sharp. Very hard to do with softer stainless, because it deforms. Maybe that 58roc will take it.

    Well….soldiers don’t use KaBars, Marines do. Even in the Marines the Kabar is no longer an issued knife. We usually brought our own knifes, I had a Gerber LMF. The best knife? A combo set…stainless steel leatherman or Gerber multipurpose pliers and tools!

    Great review as always guys! But hey, will you also please do a review on the Extrema Ratio MK 2.1? I ask because that knife is actually based on the same design as the USMC Classic Kabar knife that failed your review miserably. The difference between the Classic Kabar and Extrema Ratio’s version is that the ER knife has multiple upgrades. If you do get the opportunity to do a review of that knife please jump on it. Once again, great review on the Extrema Ratio AMF!

    The American Soldiers don't need a knife, because we have other thing to take out our enemy's, just because it's a issue knife, doesn't mean they carry that one, because the soldier can carry any knife he wants to in the field.

    I agree, n690 is fairly sharp and durable. But the problem about extrema ratio knives are price. How come 5mm of n690 prices as microtech luxury knives? Extrema ratio even gut rubber grip on it. Military is all about budget and basic requirement balance. Too pricy.

    If I was still in service I would just go for something medium size. I would take either a Bark River Bravo 1 or a Fallkniven F1Xb. Usually a lot of things issued are crap and I had to buy everything myself. Even most of the firearms are not as good as civilian unless your are spec ops. Airborne Soldiers probably are still gonna use a smaller boot knife. And most soldiers and marines will more often use smaller knives from their own money instead of issue. I dont think any of my guys even took their KBAR with them to patrols unless they are fan boys of the product. Most actually had folding knives. Compared to what people say that use for prying or cans. No thats just the weirdos cause most of us have leathermans or gerbers for opening cans. And prying doors are for breacher kits like crowbars. Most knives are used for cutting 550 cord or tape, boxes and mres
