I went to a couple Quiznos when the corporate training guy was there (like twenty years ago), I always remember it being some of the best sandwiches I had ever had. Sad days.
As fast food sandwiches go, I believe Jersey Mikes blows them all away. (A good deli is probably your best option if one is nearby) I feel your review is spot on re Quiznos! Always left me wanting for the money. Not quite good enough .
Our tastes have evolved. Back in the day, Quizno's was good because of its toasted conveyor belt and using slightly higher-quality meats and cheeses which tasted better than Subway. Lots of white-collar office workers would flock to Quiznos for lunch. However, once every competitor came up with their own toasted oven option, it was game over for Quizno's. They didn't innovate and come up with anything to make themselves stand out from the other sandwich shops.
@@Digger-Nick Regardless of when they actually started to decline, they would have collapsed if management did not evolve to changing tastes, or innovate to keep up with the competition.
I'm from Singapore and I appreciate you taking the time to drive 4 hrs in heavy traffic to review Sandwiches. Pity, it was not even a good sandwich, UA.
My first touch of true freedom. Got my license in a small very rural suburb. Then in my Senior year of high school I joined a big band that rehearsed evenings in the "big city" about 30 minutes from home. My first taste of freedom and independence was picking up dinner for when I got home. First taco bell experience (chalupa supreme is still my go-to) But the Quiznos Toasted Steak Tip sandwich will always hold a special place in my memory. Real moist marinated steak tips. That Quiznos is no more. But I'll always remember it.
I used to have one near me. It closed down 2 years before Covid hit. It was a family owned business. I went there once in awhile. It wasn't bad. I felt bad when it went out of business because I knew the family that owned and ran it. I hope they are doing well.
What I read about that chain was that the parent company makes you buy all products from them at really jacked up prices to the point of putting many of them out of business.
Quiznos got greedy. They didn't limit franchises by location and the buy in was pretty cheap. At one point I worked downtown in a city and had 3 Quiznos within a five minute walk. Subway and other franchises wont let you open one too close to another so they aren't competing against themselves. Like other franchises they required all stores to buy from corporate, but instead of being a benefit they just turned it into their main source of revenue, overcharging franchises. Greed ruined them and then competition put the final nail in the coffin.
Having too many of a store doesn't explain why demand for it fell off a cliff. There are Starbucks on every corner also, they have no problem with customers...
Agreed Quiznos Corporate got greedy. Franchisees could not make $$$ on $5.00 Footlongs. They could not break even. The store near me had an employee standing at the off ramp of the highway wearing a Sandwich board advertising $5.00 Footlongs for the store that was visible A half block away. A group of disgruntled Quiznos Franchise Owners formed an association to challenge Quiznos Corporate for their business practices in a court of law. I don't know the result of the lawsuit. I do know the store by me was involved. I don't know if they went so broke they went bankrupt. Or if Corporate terminated their Franchise Agreement for breach of contract. But they closed down. To be reopened as a Firehouse Sub shop.
You just brought me back to 2009 when I used to chill at Quiznos after Midwood HS BY BROOKLYN COLLEGE IN NY 😭🤣😂 Those were the days until they closed at opened a Starbucks.after that all had slowly changed 😖
The french dip used to be my go to back in the day. And they had a chipotle chicken sub that wasn't bad. I haven't seen a Quiznos in probably fifteen years. Thanks for the nostalgia.
UA, you were absolutely correct about Quiznos. When I lived in Maryland, I used to eat at Quiznos as often as I could. They were pricier than Subways, but much better tasting. And the sandwich that you were thinking of was my favorite go-to Quizno sub, the Chicken Carbonara on a Rosemary Parmesan Bread. It was delicious. One time i purchased two whole Chicken Carbonara subs (large) and finished them both. It was that good. Yes, Subway's marketing blitz and low price, value pricing strategy was the downfall of Quiznos. Ironically, Subways sandwiches are now overpriced, and the quality seems to have diminished. I just starting eating at Jersey Mike subs, they remind me of the old "Blimpie's" Subs which pre-dates Subways. Blimpie's was also decimated when the competition from Subways, Quizno's, etc came into existence. Now, you can barely find a Blimpie's anywhere. Soon, you will barely find any Subways, which would actually be a good thing. Keep up the excellent foodie journalism. Last point, do you notice how the price of sandwiches and fast food in general is going up, but portion sizes are mysteriously getting smaller. Hmmmm.......
Regardless of Subway quality not being on par quality-wise with something like Jersey Mike’s (or one’s local mom and pop Italian Deli, which usually can never be beat), I’d still MUCH rather have the option of Subway over something like Burger King/Kentucky Fried Chicken/McDonald’s/Wendy’s/Jack in the Box/etc. Subway is still _BY FAR_ the healthier option versus all these super fatty fried food chains! That’s what made them blow up to begin with, and they deserve respect for making such “fast food” easily accessible everywhere, being the first ever major chain for sub sandwiches. So I’m not with you in joining to celebrate Subway stores closing down/their demise/downfall. That’s not something worth celebrating to me. Just like it was incredibly sad to see Quiznos die off. Jersey Mikes is great and all, but if Quiznos was still around me, I’d be going there instead to be 100% honest. If not for Subway’s success, I really don’t think we would have ever seen Jersey Mike’s or Quiznos.
Between 2001 and 2010 or so, this was my #1 spot for lunch!! I absolutely loved it. remember the commercials with the spongmonkeys?? LOL. sadly, there are none left around me in Ohio, but I would love to revisit and get the Classic Italian again.
But still to this day subway did not taste better, I am a fan of deli delicious here in California, but it’s pricey….for 5 full size roast beef subs it’s about $70, for me and my 4 kids.
Hey UA, thank you for review. I used to go to a Quiznos often as there was one on my UPS route on route 22. I very rarely tried anything else except for the honey mustard chicken and the black angus steakhouse (though I think the latter was called something different, not sure though). It was good at first, but I just went there too often and eventually ruined it for myself lol. It’s crazy how many locations they had for a time. The FDR (and BQE for that matter) are the absolute worst when it comes to traffic. The trucks must’ve been heading towards a clearance they wouldn’t make lol. Thanks again for another good vid!
I loved Quiznos back in the day. The toasting was far more charred thanks to the conveyor belt, where Subway was just using minute ovens. The more charred, the better IMO. I didn't even care it was more expensive, I'd happily pay more. Those subs you had looked nothing like what I remember in terms of toasting quality. They had ground to stand on, but they lost it thanks to the alienation of franchisees. Many of the good franchisees jumped ship, leaving them with all bad apples who had no idea how to run a business. Case in point, there was another Quiznos opening much closer to where I lived at the time around 2006, and I actually applied for a position there. Didn't get it obviously, but I decided to go in after they opened. I kid you not, this franchisee hired the most surly group of ladies he could find in all of upstate NY. The service was bad and the food wasn't up to standard. That was my last time going into any Quiznos. I was thinking about going to that Quiznos, but after seeing the way you were treated, plus their high prices, I have no desire to.
Quiznos was huge back in the day in Ontario Canada. Definitely toasting the sub initially set them apart from Subway. One thing I remember really liking was they had a station that had jalapenos and mayos hot sauces etc that you could add to your sub. A couple things I recall not liking was that they at least in Canada hid the toppings , so you couldn't see what the toppings looked like. Secondly I thought the price was just too high for a fast food sandwich and would go to either subway or Mr sub (Mr sub started in 1968 was the leading sub chain in Canada before subway came in and put a huge dent in them)
Oh wow. I used to live in CT back in the day and would go to that very same Quiznos. There was a nice family that owned it. Service was always great. Subs way better than Subway. Unfortunately it was always more expensive and this was 10 years ago but i would still choose them as a sub chain over subway.
i used to go to quiznos with my brother some weeks everyday. We would eat it minimum 3x a week sometimes more, sometimes less. The food was great for what it was, blew subway out of the water, the mesquite chicken was great on the rosemary parm bread or just whole wheat, and i remember every sandwich i got to be at least ok- great. The idea of oven toasting their sub was the best, but soon after others caught along. When i visited cali, firehouse subs was great, like a direct competitor, and once Jersey mikes came into full swing, it was game over for the competition.
It was expensive compared to blimpie and subways. At subways you bought a sandwich and you had as many toppings as you want. At Quiznos you pay per topping. I remember buying a sandwich at Quiznos and the base was like $4 for a 6”. The base is basically the bread and meat. The lettuce, etc… were extras. I believe it was like .50 cents each. So it adds up quick. I never went back. $5 footlong at subways vs $10 footlong at Quiznos. 3:21 look at the turkey ranch & Swiss sandwich. It comes with lettuce tomatoes & onions. Anything extra you want to add into that sandwich like olives & jalapeños, you pay for it. At subways, it’s included.
I know - having lived in NJ myself I would have opted for the GWB - or if the Cross Bronx had its usual traffic - I would head for the Tappan Zee using either the GSP or Route 17. That would put you on I -95 right at the NY - CT border.
I used to work in a college town and I was a basketball season ticket holder. I could actually walk from work to a game and there was a Quizno's along the way. Still - in a college town there was a lot of good, reasonably priced food. But yeah - Quizno's was solid back then - maybe 2001-2005. I think might have paid about $6-7 for a toasted sandwich and I'd also grab a few pepperoncini. Plus their Batch 83 sauce. However, our office moved and I generally didn't come back. If I went to see a game I'd probably try parking closer to the gym and there were different food options on that side of the campus.
Quiznos was known for it's toasted bread and that's sadly where it ends. The ingredients were always hit or miss, depending who was running the store that day. Although I do agree, it's more consistent than Subway. Subway always felt like their lettuce was left out in the sun all day, runny stale tomatoes, dried out onions, slimy deli-meat, and foul tasting oil. Combine that with a sweet doughy bread, it tastes like something you find off an actual subway floor; boot imprint and all.
I have such nostalgia eating there, there was a quiznos in my hometown of Aurora, Ohio and i went there all the time for lunch before work and when i got a new job, i would go on my dinner break, i was so bummed when they closed
Where I Live At In WilliamsBurg, Brooklyn There Is No Quizno 's Restaurants 😢😢😢😢 . Only Subway Franchises . If They Were Here In Brooklyn, Would Put Subway's Out Of Business !!!!
i had a really strange experience at quiznos the past week. I was traveling out of hawaii after attending a conference there and saw quiznos at the airport, tried it out. to my dismay they didn't have meatball sub, which was my nostalgia meal from elementary / middle school lunch breaks. I tried their lobster roll and it was honestly terrible, BUT the staff were so nice, and I had a nice convo with an immigrant from the pacific islands who was working there. I noticed a lot of dying chains still exist in hawaii, similar to how endangered species of animals often exist on islands due to lack of natural predators. Even though the sandwich itself was awful, I hope the best for Manuela and the quiznos franchise in hawaii.
the classic Italian would have been the sub to get to give a fair semi-consistent evaluation. Most apples to apples, everyone has an Italian and usually the most popular, not to mention the technical og.
There is a Quiznos at the Las Vegas Airport. The Black Angus steak is still delicious. They went out of business because they were overcharging the franchises for food, and they were giving out coupons that made owners lose money.
The funny thing is where I live in Western Washington theres 3 Quiznos within 20 minutes of me. I knew they lost the 'sub wars' against Subway but I didn't realize they were actually all out sinking as a company. Bummer, we need more options.
1:17 I didn’t finish the video but clicked when I saw the title. My first job was at a Quiznos in downtown Atlanta off Marietta street. It was the busiest Quiznos in the world. To this day, no sub chain comes close to being better than Quiznos. I don’t eat subways, firehouse, occasionally I have done jimmy John’s but Quiznos is king!
The roast beef was my favorite! Their problem is they built your sub out of site, to me this is a big part of Subway's appeal. At Subway you can see what they are doing and you can add whatever fresh toppings you wish. At Subway you build your sandwich, at Quiznos they build it.
I normally don't like to toast my sandwiches. One time I asked Quiznos to not toast it. Worst mistake. I think the bread is made to be toasted. It tasted almost undercooked. Having need to toast it when not my preference was why I didn't go as often. Plus you're right. it's more expensive than it's worth.
There was a period when they were good, at least in the Northeast. When they had the prime rib and brisket sandwiches around 2006 they were solid and had a deal on Mondays. I used to get three footlongs and eat one during each hour of Monday Night Raw.
They used to have a chicken carbonara sandwich I used to get in when I was in college too lol it was great I’m in NJ too and there used to be one in Jersey City Journal Square but it closed a while back and then you couldn’t find Quiznos at all
I work right near this location. Got lunch there a couple times a little while ago after not having it for years. Had no idea this was the only one in region left it doesn't even show up on the store locator on the website.
Corporate treated their franchisees like garbage. They made them sign contracts that they would only buy their ingredients from the company and they were ridiculously overpriced. The straw that broke the camel's back was when corporate sent out hundreds of thousands of coupons for free subs and didn't even bother to tell the already struggling franchises about it. They allowed stores to open within a block of each other making competition between themselves. So greed ended them. It's almost always greed.
There was a Quiznos close by to where I live. I knew they had closed, so I went ahead and did a search for the nearest location. The nearest location to me here in New York, is located in Maryland... next closest... Canada! Not even the one UA went to in CT showed up on the Locations Map... so maybe they are already closed?
quiznos was delicious when they first opened. Used to love the bread when it was toastedd. Unfortunately, after a few years it took a huge turn for the worse. Haven't seen one in a long time.
The spongmonkeys were everything back in the day! Quiznos actually brought them back to advertise that they were working on making a comeback. Guess we’ll see if it comes to pass.
In Canada, we had Don Cherry as the face of Quiznos. I liked it when it first took off, can't say why I stopped going, I'm curious if there are any left here.
Quiznos was doing the same things that defunct yogurt chain in the 80s Penguins ( featured in the movie Tough guys) going through there own supplier and charging extremely higher prices
Most likely they wanted each different franchise to use the same supplier so everything could be consistent from location to location, but it’s highway robbery supplies are overpriced. That explains why Quiznos was charging a lot of money for their sandwiches
The best sandwich shop is Subway hands down. On any sub you order they put unlimited vegetables - anything you want. The prices at Subway are pricy but reasonable if you look at the prices other chains including Quiznos and Jersey Mikes charge you.
It's a solid chain I think! It's not great but it's definitely better than Subway imo. It's gotten quite a bit more expensive than the last time I had it though
Used to eat at one at the airport I flew out of. Had the meatball & Italian sub which I enjoyed. But on the Italian sub they would automatically coat it with balsamic vinegar without asking which drowned out the taste. Otherwise, no complaints.
You should go to the Cheers in Boston Also, subway has been sort of dying off, and they just sold. Also the 5$ foot long has been killing them like the all you can eat shrimp did for red lobster Oh and I liked the spong monkeys
Why do you think Quiznos fell off?

14:07 fly on the dressing 🤣
They used to be bomb
Grilled onions ,fresh mushrooms and that jalapeño cheese bread? Stop!
Ever heard of Blumpkins? They used to be real good!
I have such nostalgia eating there, there was a quiznos in my hometown of Aurora, Ohio and i went there all the time for lunch before work and when i got a new job, i would go on my dinner break, i was so bummed when they closed
Nostalgia has nothing to do with it. Quiznos is way better than Subway.
The only thing I really liked from Quiznos was their prime rib sandwhich and peppercorn sauce.
What about that insane commercial they used to have
Quiznos was expensive back I say around 2006. Use to love the prime rib cheese steak ! Plus it always took a long time to get your food also there
That little sandwich grill/grate they put the sandwich together on - just brought me back to 2005
I have nostalgia for Quiznos for sure I used to love it! They had it in a mall near me.
That is very interesting. I hope Manuela and his Quiznos location the best of luck!
the classic Italian would have been the sub to get to give a fair semi-consistent evaluation.
What would you rather eat, Subway or sawdust? Can't figure out why Jersey Mike's hasn't opened in Toronto.
There's one opening soon inside Union Station.

Quiznos' Turkey Bacon Guac sub was amazing.
I miss Fuddruckers The bison and ostrich burgers along with their fixing bar was awesome 0:08.
I like the concept hopefully it takes off.I didn't know they still existed😊
$19 for a single sandwich in a fast food joint? Hell no!
Sizzler Steakhouse or Cracker Barrel next!!
You ahould have taken the Tappan Zee man! What are you doing on the FDR to go to CT? 😂
Wow, 4 hours to Orange in horrible traffic, that is dedication. At this point drive 20 more minutes into New Haven , and eat Apizza !! The best!
Blimpies and Quiznos were pivotal to my childhood
The peppercorn steak sandwich was so good
They used to have a chicken carbonara sandwich I used to get in when I was in college too lol it was great I’m in NJ too and there used to be one in Jersey City Journal Square but it closed a while back and then you couldn’t find Quiznos at all
I work right near this location. Got lunch there a couple times a little while ago after not having it for years. Had no idea this was the only one in region left it doesn't even show up on the store locator on the website.
$20 for a 12” fast food “Philly” is fucking robbery
subway has a bogo now online order 2 weeks free ad
@@christrout9902 actual Philly cheesesteaks in Philly cost half that
Quizno's Honey Mustard Club was my joint! lol
How did you end up on the FDR Drive going from NJ to CT??
You have to get the 3 pepper chili sauce to dip it in. Game changer
You are correct. Corporate greed is like the dagger in businesses, especially if they were not originally run by a corporation.
There used to be one on 34th between 8th and 9th in the city. That place was always packed during lunch.
quiznos was delicious when they first opened.
I’m just outside of Vancouver and I can’t remember seeing one in a long time.
@@peacefrog64 I looked them up, there are some left in Ontario but not many near me.
They were ahead of subway for a while because they were the only ones offering toasted subs. After subway got their ovens, it was over for Quiznos
Their Bacon chicken Cobb wrap is fantastic!
My issue is that they were ridiculously expensive for an average sandwich. Not really into the toasted gimmick either.
You used to go to Subway, Blimpies, and Quiznos because it was much cheaper and faster than a local deli. But, for them prices,
hell to the no.
Ha.
The best sandwich shop is Subway hands down. On any sub you order they put unlimited vegetables - anything you want. The prices at Subway are pricy but reasonable if you look at the prices other chains including Quiznos and Jersey Mikes charge you.
Do a review at Walk Ons, best double cheeseburger from a chain restaurant you’ll ever have!
I loved their Honey Bacon Club
should’ve skipped that trip to quiznos bud
Thanks Captain Obvious.
Next UA is reviewing school cafeterias and Hospital food
@@peyotegardens And homeless shelters
Quizno's was never that big down South, but I thought is was OK. No loss. Penn Station and Jersey Mike's are my go to sub shops.
I live 15 mims from thrre. Not sure when you went there but im assuming a fri sat or sun terrible traffic ny ct
I love Quiznos. If corporate had not tried to screw their franchisees, it would have worked because, as you suggested, the food was very tasty.
I loved the Quiznos Italian with that batch 83 hot sauce they use to have. That was my usual order. 🥖
I've actually been to Quiznos quite a few times this year. I still really like them and wish more of them were still open.
You should go to the Cheers in Boston
Also, subway has been sort of dying off, and they just sold. Also the 5$ foot long has been killing them like the all you can eat shrimp did for red lobster
Oh and I liked the spong monkeys
