Summer bottom Fishing in the middle sound with my Dad - (with underwater footage)

  • Was able to spend some time out with my dad on the kayaks during the fourth of July weekend. We mainly fished for seabass, porgy, and fluke, although there were a few surprises mixed in. Two days prior to this day we got out for a quick afternoon outing and tried some deeper boulders in like 65-70' of water and found only 1 short seabass, so this day I knew we had to try and give the shallower boulders more time. Thankfully with calm conditions we were able to try a few spots, all of which produced something, but the shallow boulders in 35' produced the best results.

      Thanks Robert, I know the underwater stuff from other older TH-cam videos like me skinner helped me visualize and understand so much so I will keep trying to do it when I can

    Pete, you need a boat, sea bass would have had to jump higher to get out. So sorry, was a great fish. I've had them jump off the bait station while I was measuring them so I know that feeling.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do want a boat lol. One day, one day. Ouch yeah I can imagine the bait table on a boat is a dangerous area for flops. This seabass had some serious power to get over the gunnal, I need a higher gunnal indeed!

      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks 👍 oh yeah that tow rope is clutch for staying together too bc I really wanted him close to the spots I would go over. Plus it makes getting around to all those different areas a bit easier with the motor doing the work. Yeah he def knows how to fish! Been doing it a while! Glad he showed me at an early age too!

      Thanks Jeremy, yeah we had some good sized ones on this day! I do have a older video of the ccamera setup: th-cam.com/video/ewCQ1A0ABwU/w-d-xo.html but I must admit I've updated the housing a little bit since then, I have these arm things stick out from the side of the mount now instead of the "fin" in that video which has helped with the stabilization a bit more...but the general idea is the same

    Peter have you ever kayak fished in Montauk? Would like to attempt a trip in my Scout 175 dual console but it’s a troop from CT

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Kolby! I did kayak fish in Montauk once. I was with dan (fishin accomplished) and james (yakinwithbigfoot). theres a video somewhere on my channel of it - was a great trip, we did pretty good. I think you could make the hike on a good weather day depending on where in CT you are of course...we stayed on the north side and tried to stay away from the boat traffic as much as possible, its gets pretty crazy over there as the boats are faster and bigger!

    Peter,
    You can NOT let those fish flop on the deck. That's their way of sending Morse Code to the fish below ! ! !
    Evidently, on this day they were ignoring all transmissions..... Way to put on a clinic, especially with Pops.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Morse code, haha love it. Yea a very dumb mistake, it seriously that seabass deserves an award for how much air he got on that flop. Appreciate the chuckle Francus 🤙

    Fishing has been good, on both the inshore half-day grounds and around Block Island. My mom and I went out last week. It was just one of those slow days. The whole boat only kept 6 fluke and 2 sea bass. They also started the whale watch season a couple weeks ago. Which runs afternoons on Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Josh that’s surprising that block island is slow right now, we’ll I hope you get another opportunity to get some better action

    Hey Peter, how are you guys cooking your porgies, what do you recommend if you have a particular recipe. Maybe you can do a catch and cook one day .The fluke hit definitely proves you have to cover ground to catch these guys and it proves they are fast as hell at short bursts. Greetings from Gio Western Long Island sound.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Gio, I’ll def do a catch cook porgy soon then, but I usually fry them. My wife prefers them while so sometimes I will scale and gut a few but personally I’ll only do seabass whole. My fry recipe is basically flour then egg batter with hot sauce back to Panko and some seasoning in between. Man these fluke are far and few between this year in the sound, I agree need to cover ground, love how they hit the lure like that!

    Good to see Pops out on the water. You sure have fallen in love with the worm. It seems to be such a versatile bait. I'm going to have to give it a try. I like the old Penn 65 reel you were using for the camera. Real old school

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great eye, Penn 65 Long Beach you got it! Was great to get out with him, we had a blast and we’re beat after this one lol. I really have fallen in love with it, i think ever since that striper outing with it it’s just become my confidence lure and catches literally everything. Even this morning I was out jigging with it for seabass in western sound and I think a really big bass took it, lost the fish but it just keeps surprising me the range of fish that will hit this silly little worm

    • @bobthompson9890
      @bobthompson9890 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeterRanieriII the retrieval ratio on those 65's are a joke. But they were the old workhorses back in the day. Just think the old-timers used to bring in some big bass and blues on those. When I cleaned out my father's basement I must have throughout a half a dozen of them. I think he had at least one in every colored handle green, red, white and yellow. Brings back memories. God bless

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bobthompson9890 haha so true but that super low gear ratio does allow for easy cranking. That’s just awesome, hope you saved at least a few I love old school reels…the rods not so much, they were just too heavy. God bless!

      @PeterRanieriII hey hi Peter I was just about to state the same..that those worms are your #1 lure of choice as I have seen through your video collection , isn't the 1/2 oz jig heads a little to big for the medium size porgies , or weeds out the smaller & medium porgies , just for the bigger ones in the deeper waters , and the 3/8 for the shallower waters fir the medium and large porgies ., and the worm colors porgies the deeper burgundy green, motor color ones ? Thanks another educational video with pops.

    loving your videos, i have a wilderness systems radar 135. just got back into kayak fishing as my boat is under a warranty claim at the moment. nothing is better then getting on a sick seabass feed. try using straight diamond jig with no tube, helps weed out the smaller ones! ive used up to an A67 when the tide is really screaming and they will smoke it with no hesitation

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks and happy to hear. Nice good thing you have the kayak still, I totally agree that using a metal like a diamond jig can weed out the small ones. I def need to try that and thanks for the tip! They really can get so aggressive at times, how deep are you jigging the a67 in current? I think I have a few a27’s

    Hello Peter. Excellent fishing. I watch your videos with pleasure. Are you not afraid to swim far in kayaks? Where do you fish, to the shore, as I see it, far.

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks and glad to hear! I was a little nervous going out far at first but each time I go I get more and more comfortable I think. I’ve gone as far as about 5mi from shore, this day we were probably 2mi at the most
