  • The Legendary Japanese Beast Everyone Forgot About!
Ever heard of the Mitsubishi Starion? This '80s sports car might not be as famous as some of its Japanese rivals, but it's got a story worth telling!
Born in 1982, the Starion was Mitsubishi's top-of-the-line sports car. Its name might come from "Star" and "Arion" (a mythical horse), or it could be a funny mix-up of "stallion" - no one's quite sure!
What made the Starion special? It was one of the first Japanese cars to use turbocharging and electronic fuel injection. Under the hood, you'd find a turbocharged engine pumping out anywhere from 145 to 197 horsepower, depending on the model.
The Starion looked the part too. It started with a sleek, wedge-shaped body, and later versions got even cooler with a wide-body design. Inside, you'd find a driver-focused cockpit with some pretty fancy features for the time, like super-adjustable seats.
But the Starion wasn't just about looks and straight-line speed. It was built to handle well, with advanced suspension for its time. Some models even had anti-lock brakes on the rear wheels - pretty high-tech for the early '80s!
Here's a cool fact: In the US, you could buy this car as a Chrysler, Dodge, or Plymouth Conquest. It was all part of a partnership between Chrysler and Mitsubishi.
The Starion wasn't just a streetcar - it was a fierce competitor on the racetrack too. It won endurance races, rallies, and touring car championships all over the world. One team even won a 24-hour race after fixing their crashed car with chicken wire!
Despite all this awesomeness, the Starion's time in the spotlight was short. Production ended in 1989 after just seven years. But its legacy lived on, influencing future Mitsubishi performance cars like the legendary Lancer Evolution.
Today, the Mitsubishi Starion is a bit of a hidden gem in car history. It might not be as well-known as some other '80s sports cars, but for those in the know, it's remembered as a pioneer that was ahead of its time in many ways.

1:08 Mitsubishi was fully 2 years behind the Nissan 910 Bluebird SSS Turbo sedan and Coupe, which had proper multi point EFI and was turbo charged in 1980.
This same Z18ET engine was then installed in the S110 Silva as well in 1982. It was a genuine Coupe contender against to Station, with similar power and much less weight.
The Station engine had center point fuel injection - basically a rich man's carburettor, the extra 200cc allowed it to make 8kw more power.

At 0:40, that is a Chrysler Laser XE. NOT a Star/Quest. Mentions the "wide body" version then proceeds to NOT show a widebody and then a 300ZX. The Conquest was only sold as a Chrysler that I have ever seen.

I loved my Starion ESi. One of the best looking Japanese cars of all time, in my opinion. The specs were pretty good too: RWD, stock front mount intercooler, limited slip, Dukes of Hazzard fun!
The transmission was the weak link. The brakes heated up fast too, but at least they didn't grenade. The psychotic-mouse seatbelts were memorable too.

He would have been 72 years old when that Starion was racing/winning.

Had a friend that had one of these, so cool. It lasted one month past the 12 month warranty. When the engine blew, it actually dented the hood up.
I never bought a Mitsubishi, and I sold my wife’s Mitsubishi soon after we got married (which cost me $500 as she was upside down on the loan). I only recently bought a turbo charged car even though I know the tech has been made reliable for years.

One in the 1980's that was setting times around Bathurst that was upsetting the V8 Holden/Ford brigade to no end and a bloke named 'Balbot' - again he'd travel every year to Bathurst for the Summernats and decimate the 4-cylinder competition in the 'Horsepower Heroes Competition' - nuts, this bloke was making 400 rear wheel horsepower in 2001 running a modded truck turbo and 8-bit Microtech computer 🙂

I still have my blue starion. Granted, it is no longer powered by a Mitsubishi turbo 4 but I didn't cut the car up to get the current drivetrain in it just in case I want to put the 4g that was in it back into it. I know it did not come with a 4g factory but the guy that I got it off of took a single cam 4g from a mighty max, put a 1g talon tsi head on it and built the turbo set up. Ran good, I just wanted more mid range so I put a 317 head 6.0 in it

I remember seeing this car in the late 80's and holly crap were they expensive, I think I remember seeing them sell for 30k+ and that was something like 8k over cars in the similar space.

I loved thar car and almost bought one back in the late 80s but chose Mustang instead, a budy had the wide body version and it was slick. Had good performance but after he upgraded his turbo and IC that thing was a quick little car.

My uncle owned a 89 or 90 Chrysler conquest tsi. White with black interior. That thing blew away a camero iroc z on interstate.

The photo you have of Kevin Bartlett is in fact of Greg Murphy, Australian V8 super Car Driver. Interestingly Greg is from Newzealand!
