  • This is an affordable watercolor box set suitable for beginners. This review compares the Sakura Koi Watercolor with Prima Marketing because they are in the same price range. Overall, I would recommend Prima Marketing because their paints mix well without losing much vibrancy.

    a tip. I have only had the Sukura paints a short period of time but I have found if I take a small spray bottle and spray all he pans before starting that does help some.

    Sakura koi was my first watercolor set, and still the one I'm currently using right now. I mainly bought it because of how many colors it has for a low price; plus the waterbrush and sponges are convenient for travelling. However they are pretty bulky and I also noticed that my works fade over time even though I remember them being vibrant when I painted them. But for someone in a budget, it's a pretty good set. Now I'm thinking of purchasing Prima or Cotmans. Thanks for the review!

      Tomino I’ve been using Cotman’s for plein air work. They are fairly good when you use them that way. I just opened a box of Turner Artist Watercolors. I have a feeling from seeing my color wheel that I may start using them instead of the Cotman’s. The Turners are much brighter and easier to wet.

    This was my very first watercolor set when I asked my papa to buy it for me as a graduation gift. The colors are vibrant enough but they aren't as light fast(?) as I hoped. The colors can fade over time but they are really great if you are into travelouging and on-the-go painting since they are nice if you dilute them well enough~

      Mari Akutsu well I always bored when I'm in the Philippines because in the morning it's boring no kid is playing because that is there school day in the afternoon I would play with my cats because in the morning they sleep in my lap so maybe I can use this set and paint(there is a table for me to paint)and I also want to improve my drawing skills it's a bit bad but my painting skill is good

    Palette is sturdy, useable even for large washes ( you can get an extra set and use the mixing area with the first set for even more mixing space) you can remove the crappy paint and tray...make a tape covered cardboard tray to put other half pans of good paint. This is a little on the heavy side but a very usable plein aire palette.

    I’m not a professional artist so Sakura koi 18 tubes is my first decent watercolor and it’s unexpected that I was able to sell artworks using it. I painted a lot and still not yet over. I want to try other brands but I just want to finish what I have before getting new ones. It’s not practical to keep spending to get loads. Will consider your advise in next purchase. Thanks.

    I believe Sakura koi is for the new student, low budget college student, or beginners (including people who love this brand)
    It’s affordable (i can get mine rn from Walmart for $20) and it’s nice and close to what you would pay for double or triple but keep in mind this is on a budget, not professional expensive

      Crystal•Sugar Gamer I know this comment was written six months, but I wanted to say that the Prima confections watercolours are absolutely worth it. I found them on amazon for 19 US dollars, so yeah. There are obviously less colours in that set, but I personally find the quality to be a dealbreaker.

    I used the Koi Watercolor 12 set for a couple of years and I honestly thought it is pretty decent for sketching. The colors are decently vibrant and gets the job done. However, of the all of the colors, I didn't enjoy purple the most since it was very weak and pastel-like. Great review. I enjoy listening to your opinions and recommendations. :)

    Your conclusions match mine very closely. I don't care much for the Koi paints but the plastic box is very handy as a traveling sketch kit. The plastic bit holding the paints can be removed and your own assortment of pans and half pans stuck inside. My understanding is that the palette was designed for sketching on post card sized paper, which is or was very popular in Japan, and the lid is perfectly sized to hold that size paper. With better paint (I use Windsor & Newton Artist colors,) it works extremely well for that specific purpose.

    Just bought this set today - have not used it yet. I knew before I bought it that it was essentially student grade pigments, but I wanted it for sketching - not for serious efforts that might be sold. Most, if not all of what I will use the set for will stay in sketchbooks. I also had limited choices at my local big box arts and crafts store (and had gift certificate dollars to spend). Koi and Cotman were the two choices, and this Koi set seemed to have a nicer box/palette design. I don't have studio space in my home, I have to drag out my stuff to create art, then put it all away in a closet. My thought was that this field sketch box would make it easier for me to do watercolor sketches, as well as be handy to take along on vacations.

    Don't forget the waterbrush included in the Koi set :) After upgrading to artist quality paints, I still get tons of use out of the Koi set. It's so convenient that I still keep it in a diaper bag so my kids can use it on the go whenever they need to sit still for more than 5 minutes.

    I've had the Sakura paints for a little while, but I really enjoy them because I am used to using really terrible and cheap paints. I think if you're not willing to spend 40+ dollars on only watercolors that these are amazing and I can confirm that the brush that comes with it works really well

    I recently purchased this Koi set and as a beginner it suits my needs. I was impressed with the layout, the removable mixing palette and additional space inside the lid. The one thing that puzzles me is that Burnt Sienna is not included in this set. The color Light Red is to the left of Burnt Umber, which I assume is Sakurs's substitue for Burnt Sienna. This Koi set (#24) is an adequate, affordable set for beginners/students, but those experienced with watercolors will be greatly disappointed. Compared to W & N Cotman set (#12), IMO the Koi set is the way to go b/c of the 12 additional colors, if you're just starting out with watercolors. Many thanks for all your great tutorials....you've helped out many, many people like myself!

Im sorry, but w&n cotman set is actually better cause w&n isnt chalky, its lightfast, quite vibrant and more. Sakura koi is a begginer set but i would start with winsor and newton cotman caus its actually better then sakura koi

    I have a 12 set and recently got the 30 set. I have nothing to complain about really, I just love these watercolors. I know that there are a lot of better brands out there and I've tried some better brands too, but I don't see a point in upgrading to something better because I really live these.

      Teoh Yi Chie I also own kuretake, white nights, w&n cotman, van gogh, and a few tubes of Daniel Smith. My favourites are the kuretake and koi, I don't really understand the hype about daniel smith or other professional brands. I'm still pretty much a begginer but even if I was a pro I don't see why spending so much money on professional stuff is worth it

    • @Ameriix_

      And btw, I really try to avoid toxic paints because I'm very paranoid about it and don't enjoy painting if the paints are toxic - so having some student grade paints that are safe to use really makes a difference for me.

    I really like the aquamarine, quin rose and purple from this set. I mainly bought it for the box lol..the arrangement seemed very attractive (with the sponge, waterbrush and palette and all) I put Holbein paints on the palette nowadays and use them mostly XD
    But thanks a lot for comparing it with the Prima Marketing set, I've been eyeing those for a while now and it's such a nice set with such bright colours...and the application seems very smooth. Gonna have to get me some of those!! I found that the Sakura Koi are kind of a nightmare to make large paintings with...still I guess it's a decent set to play around with if you WANT a lot of colours for a cheap-ish price. The waterbrush is nice too.

      @NoxMoony 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kawaii Cute Well it comes with a separate palette which is meant to be used for colour mixing, but I put holbein paints on it lol. I also kept a little space for colour mixing. And honestly, I did think of that issue of what to do once all the paint is finished, I've decided to fill it with my other favourite watercolours. But honestly if you really like the sakura koi watercolours, then you can buy them in tubes and fill up the wells where the paint used to be. Hope this helps!

    I'm surprised that the Prima watercolours top the Sakura as I have seen many TH-cam artists who love the Sakura ones. Naturally, the Prima are new so there are less videos with them out there, but I remember seeing a TH-cam art reviewer saying the Prima ones weren't so great because they were a little chalky and stained the tin. I absolutely love how the Prima ones come in the great tin though so I reckon it's worth it! Just surprised that the Sakura Koi don't rate higher. Interesting stuff!

    • @teohyc

      +Beret Nice Prima's good. The rest test is when you mix the colours. Prima is able to retain their vibrancy much better compared to Sakura (which probably uses too much binder).

    i will say after buying and using the koi watercolor set i have found that (and this is most noticable on hot pressed watercolor paper) but some colors tend to stain the paper and wont lift for anything, I know im still new to watercolors but its a bit frustrating not being able to make a wash without the initial place where the color was put down sticks out like a sore thumb. just something to consider, it could be me but i have a very old set of artist loft watercolors that had very mininal (if any) staining compared to the koi set.

    I think I bought 5 olive greens from daniel smith, Winsor, etc trying to find the same hue that koi has. I started my journey with these colors even though I had a set of holbein I hadn't started using yet. There's something about koi that is special and brings very fond memories even though I could never use them today. I have 150 daniel smith, full holbein set and you just can't go back but they were fun and freeing.

    Thank you for the review and for the comparison with Prima. Koi Sakura watercolors are a bit better than Reeves watercolor. Compared to W & N Artist watercolor, the Koi Sakura have larger particles than artists watercolor, hence that chalkiness you are describing about. And your analysis is very helpful.

    This is the set I chose to get into watercolor last year and I love it... it was so convenient to have so many colors for cheap- so for a beginner who didnt understand much about color mixing, the variety is great. I love the palette with its walls that the metal boxes dont have. And that waterbrush! Its still my sole painting brush outside because I dont want to carry water wells. I was able to add in half pans to where the brush goes later on as I got professional colors, and now I use daniel smith colors in the Prima box and am more knowledgeable about colors and mixing. The prima is def. more vibrant.. for some reason (maybe the fillers/binders?) I used the sakura set a lot and the paint pans dont have any indentations in it to show that my paintbrush has been picking up paint, whereas my own half pans show their use quickly.

    This was the second paint I used. Daler Rowney Aquafine was the first. I had a hard time learning how to mix colors with both. Using the paints straight from the pans was not a problem though.
    For journaling, the Sakura is fine. But when I had my first experience with artist's grade watercolors, I gave away my Aquafine and Sakura paints.

    you used the prima watercolor confections tropical, it is really pigmented and more intense because u doesn't use the classic one of the prima. prima has many variations of pallets in their confections. just saying. i have one 12 colors of the Sakura Koi and it is good for a beginner and for travelling. but thankyou for the video, it really helps =)

    I've been trying to decide between these 2 sets and the winsor and Newton cotman 12 set. It was pretty awesome that you compared 2 in this one! I'm using some daler rowney simply paints right now. They are all right, but I really want a travel pallet. I like the layout of the koi watercolor, the colors from the prima set, and the quality of winsor and Newton... Decisions are difficult! Your reviews have been really helpful though!

    I have the Sakura Koi 24 color set. It also came with a waterbrush; but, I am not impressed with the brush. I have a couple of Niji waterbrushes which I like much better; but, they don't fit into the case. I like the set because of the box. The paints don't flow as well as some of the other brands that I have. Maybe that is because of the extra fillers in the mix.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I have both of these! I still like the Newton Windsor cotman more XD. Not sure why but my koi paints crack after they dry. I like the cotman plastic box more than the metal box that comes with prima, it just looks like the paint sticks more to the plastic than metal. Also a question where can I buy empty half pans? I want to swap out some colors. Thanks!

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The binder probably wasn't able to hold the pigments together that's why it cracked.

      +Deepti Soni They are for drying the brush. Like if you have too much paint on the brush and it is too watery, you can dry it off slightly before painting. Or you can dry the brush, and suck water from paper.

    I have a questions that's been on my mind lately. Is it really okay to use other colors while your brush is still stained with a different color? Like won't the color pan be stained of a different color?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to keep your pans clean, then you should minimize picking other colours with a stained brush. For colours that are easy to dirty, e.g. yellow, I will make sure my brush is clean. For colours that are stronger and not as easy to dirty, e.g. blue, red, and green, I don't mind using a stained brush to pick the colour from the pan. It depends on the colour. For example, greens are usually best used when mixed with other colours, so it may be better to pick green with a stained brush.

    well done and Yes I habe a question. How so you clean your watercolour boxes?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Manfred Knie Just just put some water, clean it with an old brush, and clean it off with water again. You will not be able to clean off all the colours completely because some of the colours are staining and will go beneath the surface, even for plastics, such as Phthalo Blue or Phthalo Green.

    I know this is a year old, but if you see my comment, can you tell me what the bits of sponge are for in field kits? There seems to be 2 in the Koi set. I have a piece of sea sponge in my W&N field set. I assumed my piece was for wetting the paper. But I'm not sure and the sponges in the Koi kit don't look as if they would do that, so I am thinking there may be another use.

    Do they also feel chalky to the touch when dry if you run a finger across them? Have you had any of the color to flake or lift if you touch them? I've seen some artists on TH-cam to say that the colors come out more vibrant from tubes.
