My goodness!!, I had no clue as to how much I didn’t know about the entire subjects you discussed in this video. I am not only impressed by the # of products and methods that will give the affects one is after and elevate your work. But most of all, I am so impressed by your knowledge and experience in all aspects of granulation, you are a magnificent educator and artist!. I can’t wait to see what else you have up your magical sleeve!!. 🙏🏼♥️🎃👻
This is the first video I've watched on granulation since starting watercolours four weeks ago. So helpful and interesting. thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Can't wait to find out more about my paints and what they can do and what I can make them do. I will keep watching your work.
This was very helpful! I bought a set of colours and did not realise they were all staining and I missed my granulation! It was very useful to learn about the mediums and paper choices that can help me get some of the random, easy beauty I am looking for when I paint rocks, rivers, and other landscape areas.
I’m so glad you found it helpful ❤️ and another tip 😉 you can always get one or two highly granulating colours separately and it will make it easier to adjust to your new set without having to spend more on a full set of new paints.
I’m completely amazed at how You broke this down into such clear, detailed explanations for your viewers. I’m just beginning in this medium and knew that I loved the effects of granulating paint but I didn’t know anything else beyond that. I questioned what would happen if I mixed my less expensive paints with DS and other more expensive paints. Now I know what to try and what to look for. Thanks so much for the respect you show your viewers by taking time to give a thorough lesson on how paints behave differently and with different paper. The profile sketches of the paper surfaces with the staining vs granulating paints is especially valuable to me.
I’m so glad you’ve made a good use of the video. Paper is very important in watercolor , some may argue - even more important than paint. The best thing you can do is experiment with your paint and paper that you usually use as you will get different results. Different brands of paper manufacture it a bit differently so cold press of one company may be different from another brand… experiment, experiment, experiment 😊
This was extremely well presented. I'm experimenting by using some universal colorants with Gum Arabic to create my own water colors. So far the do granulate more than standard water colors. Another thing I've done is create watercolor with india ink with a few drops of Darth Black (a super ultra black acrylic) with my gum Arabic medium. This watercolor granulates beautifully. I've also experimented with mixing non granulating tints with granulating pigments normally used for house paint, in my attempt to formulate supergranulators. I'd classify my blacks as supergranulating.
How interesting! I’ve never mixed house paints with watercolor or Gum Arabic 😊 I will be making a video in the near future about making your own paint. Thank you for sharing your experiments ❤️
This tutorial was so well done, with great explanation, demonstration and enthusiasm! Very helpful! I'm a new painter and have been working with watercolor for about 3 months. I am loving it! - So much to learn; and it'll be a while before I develop my own style. Yet there is something so forgiving about watercolor. There is definitely a magic that happens once the paint dries and one returns to look at her work. -- Even a novice can feel they've painted something beautiful! Thanks for sharing your expertise on this very relevant topic.
I love granulation. I just bought Schminke supergranulating set;delighted with it. Thank you for sho×ing how to mix one's own granulation combinations, as well as the use of granulation medium. I had tried the medium before, but you showed me how to use it much more effectively. Thank you!
Go for it!! 😆Make sure to record the names of the colours and other info as you might love some of the mixes you create but not remember down the line what they were exactly :)
What an excellent tutorial!!!!! I’m so glad to find you today!!!! You answered so many questions and now I have a greater understanding of the wonderful world of watercolor!!! I appreciate this jam packed video!!!! I’m subscribing!!!!
The most comprehensive granulation video I've seen (and I've watched a lot 😆!). I spent the whole of last weekend experimenting with my granulating watercolours and using my W&N medium liberally. I had no idea about the Schmincke granulation spray but it's not expensive and I've just checked that my local art store has it and it does - yay! Another little tip is using warm salty water in a spritzer bottle, giving the same (but I guess less effective) result as the Schmincke spray medium. So, thanks for this video, I really got a lot from it. Cheers. 😊
Nice demonstration with drawing the different types of paper and how particles settle. Yes you are encouraging me to use and mix the granulating colors. Thank you so much. I only just discovered you.
Yes, yes, yes experiment with granulation! It’s a watercolor thing and not prominent in other media. Understanding Granulating colors can be so important when working with this medium! So glad you’re enjoying the videos 😄

Hey Flower : - Cheers for yet another interesting + chilled out upload....... *There's a W missing off your sleeve by the way!!* A lovely-looking fishy picture, I reckon watching Koi carp float around in a pond is nearly as relaxing as listening to you talk....??!. My Dad's cousin in the Isle Of Man has a big pond with them in, I remember nearly falling asleep sat at the side watching them - while we were over there watching the TT races (not so relaxing....!!!). That shade of blue you used at around 21:00 - Fallow Blue?, slightly hard to hear the name of it you quoted, thanks to that damn gorgeous accent of yours (!) ...... = Exactly the colour of my TRX850. And **Indeed** : - that mix of deep blue and amber/orange in a painting works just perfectly. Bye Chuck - all the best down there, Nick.
Hi :) I agree it's relaxing watching them swim around in the pond. There was a big beautiful pond like that in the Auckland Zoo but it was removed after the renovations unfortunately. The colour is phthalo blue. It's a very beautiful staining colour on it's own and it's commonly used to produce other blue colours as well. :D
I just found your channel for the first time tonight and found your explanation of granulation along with your examples made learning so much easier. Pretty Quoiy too. Thank you. I just subscribed to your channel.
Very informative. I really didn't know how to organize my knowledge of granulation. Thank you. So much of watercolor is about control, which requires a game plan. Very hard for me, but this video really helped.
Thank you! I love texture and granulation and I'm glad you showed how to use the WN granulation medium. The Schmincke granulation spray was a surprise I hadn't heard of before.
9:59a.m. Excellent demonstrations! I had no idea that the more water you add to a granulating pigment, the more granulated it becomes. Also, I, too, did not know that there was a granulating medium and spray. I will be getting some, for sure. I have a question. If I don’t want my sky color to be granulated, can you suggest a cerulean that doesn’t granulate? I generally use Daniel Smith paints. Thank you.
@@lynneboll4259 absolutely , you can use non granulating colour and get a smooth appearance. Phthalo blue doesn’t granulate in almost all brands and you can make interesting mixes for the sky with that. You can look up the brands descriptions. They usually specify which colours granulate and what don’t. By the way Daniel Smith have many granulating colours so you might like to try another brand if the colour you like in DS granulated.
You are a LIFESAVER 🌟⭐ omg, what a classical, needed, super important video!!! I'm going to try all of your mega super valious tips! Thank you thank you thaaank you!!!🎆🌼❤❤❤❤

My first granulating paint samples will be here in a few days and I've been watching videos on the subject. You have helped me immensely to understand the intricacies of this captivating paint medium. Now, I want to see what colors I already have that I can get a granulating effect with the granulating liquid. Thank you for being such a great teacher. 🙏
Merci infiniment pour ces explications si complètes concernant la granulation et les explications si claires concernant la migration des pigments si subtile selon le type de papier utilisé . Vidéo ultra pédagogique. Merci

Thank you so much you are such a wonderful teacher. Thanks for sharing and I will continue watching your videos and subscribe. And of course tell all my friend artist about your Chanel.
Thank you for this wonderful, informative and helpful video! I love Schmincke ‘s Horadam granulating Watercolor Paints. I have forest green and haze. I love foggy landscapes. I’m so glad I found you today, and you didn’t even know you were lost! 😉 Looking forward to getting to know you learning more on how to use granulating and non granulating paint. From my foggy and rainy mountain top in middle Tennessee, to you, have a beautiful and productive day! Fran
Haha no I didn't know I was lost but as long as i'm found now - that's all that matters :D . I like Horadam paints too Daniel Smith has a nice range as well. Have a nice and creative day!!
I've been dreaming of granulated paints, but they are hard to get where I live, shipping fees to Switzerland are ridiculously priced. Schmincke is right on the corner of this country and amazon don't deliver them here, it's, if they have it available. I bought the DS granulating medium after watching this video, to be honest, I didn't like it, that's not the look I want to achieve. Which brand of paint did use for the abstract showed at 11:40 at the video? That's a beautiful granulation, as much are your arquitetural paintings. I learned a lot with your explanations. Thank you for sharing. 💞
Most of those colours (in the time stamp) are schmincke with lots of granulating medium. I've never used DS medium the one I used was winsor and newton and schmincke spray. You can go for colours that you'd normally have in the set that tend to granulate like carbon black, ultra marine, some browns etc. I can understand your frustration, I'm in NZ and it's hard to get some brands over here as well and shipment cost at times even more than the actual product. Try all the colours that you have with the granulation medium and see which ones granulate more 😊
Hi Leila, your right, I meant to say Winsor & Newton, that's the one I bought. I also have black from Finetech, it's a good one. I´ll try new mixes. Thank you for the inspiration!
@@FloralHeart Keep experimenting and don't forget to try it on different paper finishes and brands as well. They can really affect the way granulation presents itself :)
It is what you want it to be :) It can be light, shapeless, ink like or rich, very descriptive, detailed, textured. You can use watercolour on its own or together with ink, w/c pencils, gouache. I have some videos with those tutorials on YT as well. Just keep going with it and don't feel that you need to be restricted by a specific style or type of painting. As long as you are practicing, experimenting and developing you are on the right track 😊
Started to get into granulation some years ago and found the video very informative, Mars and Luna Black have some amazing results mixed with granulation medium then applied over a watered wash, but as suggested the opposite using flat paper tilting the board slightly, try also watercolour paper board which keeps flat whereas paper stretched will become uneven spoiling the end result.
Absolutely, it's important to use the correct heaviness of paper depending on the size of the work. The larger the painting and the more water you intend to use the thicker the paper should be otherwise you will struggle with buckling and other problems :) using cotton also helps!
@LeilaAtaya I mix the colour neat into half of a bottle of granulation medium, you can judge it then from there, it will settle quickly so you need to give it a shake, you will have enough to back up along with being able to reuse either applying with a brush or pipette. It's amazing to watch the pigment floating and then settle, very unpredictable, but that's the beauty.
This was fascinating. Love the granulation…I don’t use black but do have a tube of cheap black…would that work with the combination using that granulating medium? Looks like a lot of fun experimenting. You have me interested. Thank you so much..
It's hard to say without being familiar with the brand of paint and pigments used but you can always experiment. I find that you get the most drastic changes with granulation medium when used with the paint that granulates a little bit on it's own. If the paint is really smooth it's not as obvious. Glad you enjoyed the video!! :)
Love this!! I’m hooked on granulated colors but I’m going to buy the medium next. So staining and granulation are opposites? So if you want to enter in show is this still a transparent? I’m still learning coming from oil, and dry pastel background. Love your videos. Thank you. ❤
I'm sorry I don't understand what you mean by enter a show. Staining and granulating are opposite in a way but they are all still watercolour. Yes transitioning from pastel you need to really experiment with the watercolour and play with it, create lots of mixes and swatches try different techniques. Have fun!!😊
I love how detailed you explain things, not just the look of things but the how and why of it all, even the when. Stayed up till after 2 a.m. watching this while making some very experimental new watercolor paint colors, keeping granulation and those sort of 2-tone or even 3-tone effect in mind. Darkened my own mix of dusk pink and making this gorgeous granulating brownish black with orange undertone. Bloodstone Genuine from Daniel Smith is a close match but I’ve enhanced the orange undertone. Was so in love with it that I immediately commandeered a new watercolor sketch book to keep those colors that were a succes to either remake (expensive) paints, or make it from my owned supplies, to not have to invest in a full tube, etc. But the finding out new colors is my favorite part. So much so that my artwork isn’t growing much 😂 I was planning to use a cheap watercolor sketchbook or a selfmade one (been working on making a few more for that exact reason) but it ended up being a proper hardbound watercolor sketchbook. Then I thought that it is even better to have it in this hardbound one because a sketchbook is all about experiments and studies and learning about (new) colors and at least this way it’s handy to put away or to keep open
Colour mixing and experimenting is a very important part of painting. Many students want to jump into painting finished art works but what you are doing is so good!! Make sure to keep them all and don't forget to write down the colours in the mixes and pigment numbers. I have some videos on creating multiplication table with paint and colour theory but that's on Patreon. There is also a video on how I've made a sketch book on TH-cam th-cam.com/video/nURDuhlrBEY/w-d-xo.html 😉
Can I ask what is the tape that you used for the demonstration fish piece (brand, type?)? I do love the video in general and love granulation and will definitely be using it more! Thank you
It's the one that's sold in my local art shop: WASHI MASKING TAPE DELICATE from Tape-spec. You might have a different brand with the same effect in your local store so just ask the shop assistants :)
Thank you for this super helpful video! I have one question: Where did you get this brochure? I can only find the pdf download on the schmincke website, but nowhere can I seem to get this printed on paper.
One of the most informative and helpful videos about watercolors on TH-cam! Thank you, thank you.

Thank you. I had given up on watercolours because I thought the colours had to be watery and light, and I knew nothing about granulation. 🎉
I learned so much about texture and granulation! I love the look of granulation!
Fantastic tutorial, thank you so much!
Glad you liked it 😄
I like both!
👍
@@whachoutb4 increadible effects aren’t they 😊
Love granulating paints
😊
What a great explanation
Thank you so much, glad you've enjoyed it!
Fab tips, I am sold on granulation tahnks!!
😄I’m glad !!
I love and appreciate your videos Thank you ❤
Thank you so much 😊❤
Thanks Leila - this is very interesting subject of granulation - really fascinating.
Glad you liked it!!
very well explained.loved it. please review and compare white nights new granulating water colours with other granulating water colours.
Thank you 😊 I don’t have WhiteNights new granulating watercolors. If somehow I’ll get them I’ll definitely do a video on that
Excellent tutorial....
Thank you :)
Have fun!!😊
That's a kind of classical tutorial...Jesus....I can see now 🙏🏻😁...tks a lot 🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
:)
So much so that my artwork isn’t growing much 😂
I was planning to use a cheap watercolor sketchbook or a selfmade one (been working on making a few more for that exact reason) but it ended up being a proper hardbound watercolor sketchbook.
Спасибо Лейла за новое видео, как всегда великолепная информация.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Спасибо , я рада что понравилось 🥰
This was very interesting.
Also: Which colour did you use at 7:54? It’s incredible 😍
That was a mix of at least 4 colours :) Glad you've enjoyed it
Can I ask what is the tape that you used for the demonstration fish piece (brand, type?)? I do love the video in general and love granulation and will definitely be using it more! Thank you
It's the one that's sold in my local art shop: WASHI MASKING TAPE
DELICATE from Tape-spec. You might have a different brand with the same effect in your local store so just ask the shop assistants :)
Thanks so much that was super helpful!
You are very welcome 🤗
Excellent, excellent video.

Wow I forgot about your channel. Glad I remembered.
Welcome back 😄
Thank you 🙂

Very nice ! Could you give us the name and the marque of the beautiful green you use at 19'? Thanks a lot !
Cascade green by Daniel smith
Thank you for this super helpful video! I have one question: Where did you get this brochure? I can only find the pdf download on the schmincke website, but nowhere can I seem to get this printed on paper.
You can get it in the art shop. Next time you go there ask, it’s most likely they will have it. 😊
@@LeilaAtaya I'll try, thank you! :)
Great content. Thank you.
