    It’s great to see you showing Holbein watercolors, which in my experience are of the highest quality. For instance, the color “viridian” is such a great mixer for greens, and the Holbein brand does not break up like other brands. I love the “leaf green” color, which captures beautifully leaves as they are first unfurling.

    Another great video, thanks! However, as I am never one to refrain from critical commentary, I would love it if you were able to describe how you set up & work when you are doing Urban sketching. I am in New York, and it seems like space is a questionable Prospect for most of my Urban sketching, so I've taken to using water brushes which are frankly very unsatisfying in terms of the quality achievable with them. I see your sketching walk videos and I see some of your compatriots with what looks like an entire artist studio spread out on their laps, where I'm just trying to juggle a small thumb-ring palette, a moderately- sized Sketchbook and a water-brush! I'd love to see your insight into space organization on one's lap, whether anyone uses a lap desk or not, two handed art supply manipulation (kind of like a lesson in brain surgery, y'know?), where the paper towels or rags go when you're done with them, whether or not you're carrying a suitcase size carrier for all this stuff, that sort of thing. Some of us are deep into this not just beginners, and I would love to get some insight from you and maybe some of your co-urban- sketch colleagues about how they "juggle." Thanks!

      If you bring too many things, it's going to be heavy and tiring to carry them around. I just have a small portable stool, my sketchbook and watercolour box. The sketchbook is placed on my lap and the watercolour box is on the ground. You can see me in action in this video th-cam.com/video/-7U9dH1sTRA/w-d-xo.html

    A wonderful intro video! All of your videos are very good; I am enjoying them and learning a lot! In your discussion of artist v student-grade watercolors, I'm surprised you don't mention colorfastness. I've been given to understand this is a very important feature of watercolors. For example, if you are creating art to sell/display (as opposed to just sketching in your sketchbooks), you want to be sure to use watercolors that are colorfast, so that colors don't change or fade over time. What do you think? Do you think these differences are sometimes overrated?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's best to get lightfast colours that last. But I don't have the capability to test all the colours I use, so I have to rely on the manufacturer labels. Commonly used colours and pigment have lots of information on lightfast quality. So I tend to use those

      Permanent Rose (Mission Gold)
      Rose Madder (MG)
      3 browns
      Phthalo Green
      Olive Green
      Phthalo Blue
      French Ultramarine
      Sodalite Genuine
      Burnt Sienna
      I just use whatever colours I have. I don't think too much. Even with a 12 colour palette, I usually just use 4-6 of them.

    What watercolor set did you use?

    • @teohyc

      It's actually a Winsor & Newton Deluxe Sketcher Box but the paint inside are mostly Daniel Smith.

    Isn't water-proof ink clogs fountain pens dead if it ever dries out?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to look for waterproof inks that mention specifically that they are safe for use in fountain pens. But even so, it's good to clean out the pens once in a while, and definitely clean the pen if you are not going to be using them for long period of time. If you cap the pen problem, the ink will not dry out.

    Hello, ive been using winsor and newton for 2 years now and i feel like an upgrade. Id love some Schminke but sadly its too expensive for me. Do you think White Nights is a good upgrade from Cotmans?

      White Nights is good.

      I started with W&N Cotman and moved to White Nights and I very quickly gave my Cotman set away. White Nights, for the price, opened the door to water colour for me. Good luck!!

    hi teoh did you put some water in your kit to make it moist. i bought something like that but i don't know how to use

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can get a mister. Those small plastic bottles that can spray a mist. I usually don't use them. I would use the watercolour brush to put droplets of water into colours I'm going to use. One less item to bring around outdoors.
