To be honest, watercolor paper is the most important thing that you need to invest. Don’t let the cost of paint intimidate you, start with the cheap paint first and slowly upgrade if you feel you need to

    Great video!! It was surprising to me hearing that Van Gogh looked more chalky in comparison to Koi, my understanding of chalkiness is that it is more like a "feel" or a texture once the paint is dry. For instance, Koi watercolors when more concentrated but still rather thinly it can develop a chalky feel to it. I think I have tried Van Gogh like maybe just once in my life but I remember they felt almost like an artist grade watercolor, yes they are not as transparent but they don't feel or look chalky whatsoever! That's my understanding:) maybe i'm totally wrong since English isn't my first language either but let me know if I'm mistaken! Keep it up with the great content🤩

I'm 13

    • @Makoccino
      @Makoccino  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you think about it, everything you see in the world started with an idea and a sketch! People design products, houses, posters, furniture, other beautiful things that you use daily! It's easy to say that an art degree is useless, because people usually don't realize how much is possible with that! Depending on which direction you choose, you can always do something art related! If someone thinks something is not possible, it's only a reflection of their limitations, not yours!

    I really like your videos, but I am a bit disappointed here. You seem to be biased towards WN. I know it's easiest to find in the US and probably the cheapest, but it is clearly way less vibrant and it is the hardest to rewet than the other ones and the Van Gogh is not as opaque as you made it sound. I don't know if you had a bad batch or if they changed the composition, but my set is defiantly more transparent than that apart from a light blue that is not present in your set (and that had white mixed in).

      Mako you chose really interesting and relevant brand palettes to compare. I enjoyed your vid and think that one will always have a ‘soft spot’ for the brand or palette one starts with. It was good , and right , that you disclosed which one you used at the start. I started with Van Gogh and still love them and find myself picking up these paints when I see them for a good price (as in practice they are very high quality ) even though I use Windsor and Newton professional which are extremely pigmented and transparent.

    Recently I got a Sakura Koi set, and It's WONDERFUL the colors are super pigmented and doesn't look anything like the pink-ish red in this video. I saw another videos from other artsy channels and always when they complain about a sakura koi set the label and packaging looks a tiny bit different that my own set. I got the feeling they got a dupe or a fake one...

    I wish I had seen this before purchasing my Cotman set. I really hate the pigmentation (there’s none!!). However I purchased the brush pen set, so there were unnecessary colours added to the set. Thanks for the video mako! #makoficationsquad 😚❤️

      That's right, I also bought a set a few years ago to use it as a travelset, but the pigmentation is very weak.
      that's why my set went empty very quickly. Then I got one from van Gogh and the pigmentation was so much better.

    Hello Makoccino, I would be very interested in seeing you test out some high end watercolors. Daniel Smith makes very high end watercolors, they are all generally single pigment, and they even use crushed gemstones as pigment sources.
    They have a 238 dot color chart for sampling that's only $22.59 here on Amazon in the US (I don't know where you are.) I would post a link but I wouldn't want my post to be marked as spam and for you not to see it.
    Anyways, love your test videos!
