This video should be included in the stcw course...I freelance as a yacht chef for years and the number of stews that wanted to know "when can I go swimming" thinking THEY...are on vacation is mind boggling😂 I blame "Below Deck". Great info!
Any yacht owner that makes a crew work 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, for months, doesn't deserve to be rich. That's cruel and heartless. A despicable asshole. I'm glad you got out of it. Terrible thinking that so many are doing it right now. Horrible. But great content. And a very lovely smile. 💯💯❤️
Haha “ocean bluer on the other side” that was funny, also thanks for the very honest video seems like a lot of sacrifices with some nice rewards but I want to make good money fast so I might just go for it.
It's worth giving it a go! some people love it and stay in the industry for years, the industry does test you but you come out stronger, it's definitely a good way to grow as you face situations that are out of your comfort zone that you wouldn't necessarily face in another job! x
Chefs receive high wages on boats but it’s also one of the hardest jobs because you have to cook breakfast lunch & dinner for crew & guests + stay on top of provisions & your galley. But I would imagine it would be so rewarding!! 🙏🏼
Thank you so much, I just signed up for my STCW course and learned a lot of good info from this vid!! Can I ask what you are doing now for a profession? and what was your living situation like between boating? and did you bank international?
Hey! I’m glad to hear. I’m currently a full time mama! I gave birth to my son 4 months ago so im soaking up every minute with him. I just used my Australian bank account but I also had a uk bank account as I hold a British passport as well as an Australian. If you sign up to Facebook groups like “palma yacht crew” & “Antibes yacht crew” people will be happy to assist you with any questions regarding banking! In between yachting I travelled around :)
Seriously I’m prepared to stop being poor, I don’t care what I have to do, I’m ready and seriously thinking wisely I can build a business with that money while working to gain more money , saving money is important
@@ie6890 It's definitely a good way to save money as everything is paid for you, accommodation, food, uniform, toiletries! Everything you make you can save. Just be prepared for hard work ! x
You need to research ILO hours of rest again. It's illegal to work 16 hours a day. Still, I realize these rules are still misunderstood or not followed internationally.
Just a question out of curiosity, how is tip distributed? Is it a big sum for the entire crew split or is it personal, one person gets a specific directly from the gest. If it's split is it split evenly or according to your role?
Can you still get jobs if you just wanted to do it in the summer? I am looking to get into this as a stewardess. I don’t want to spend a lot of money on courses if it’s not going to be worth it
you can just work the summer if you want but I wouldn't include that on your CV. But lots of people work the summer then work in the ski resorts during the winter or travel to the Caribbean for their summer with the boat. This line of work opens many doors, you can also work in luxury villas around the world. Once you have done the course it's valid for 5 years so you can always come back to this work if you decide to take a break :)
Hey! How long did it take you to find a job at the very beginning? Were you single or in a relationship when doing it? My boyfriend and I are both keen however I worry we wouldn't find a boat that would take us both and Below Deck has scared me hahah
hey! do you mean for sea sickness? or other medication? you're entitled to take medication, the captain / chief stew would even arrange it for you / give you time to get it if needed
Also, what do people do when not working during a season? Like in the between time? Do they get apartments or work someplace on land? Im curious what options id have when/if i needed to take breaks on land after working a season if need be
There always needs to be crew on a yacht, even if it's at a dock. When the owner or guests aren't on board, you're doing general maintenance on the interior for stews and the exterior for deckhands. Work hours off charter are M-F 8am-5pm.
Hey! There are a lot of stews aged 30 and over but they are usually chief stew and have been in the industry for a few years - If you're starting at 30 I would recommend finding a solo stew position, working for a family on a smaller yacht where you would be the only stewardess. Plus I think you'd have more job opportunities this way. If you have experience in hospitality or the hotel industry you would find it very easy working on your own. Hope this helped, Megan :)
Hello! I was on both, I had a few private boats and a charter boat. The amount of stewardess' on board depends on the size of the vessel, I worked on 45-55m yachts and there was 3-4 of us stews. Hope this helped! x
Thanks for this! When you said you made roughly 2200-2500 Euros on a private family yacht, was that weekly or monthly? And Chief Stew could be around 4-6k Euro, is that monthly as well? No tips on privately owned yachts, right?
If you work a private yacht all year you will get a bonus for the year instead of a tip. Generous owners will cover what your tips would be and more if you work more than seasonal.
Hello! To be a captain / chief officer requires you to “work your way up” so starting on deck and then you go to bosun (which is in charge on deck) and then to chief officer (who is underneath captain) and then to captain! You have to still do the STCW course & then extra courses for deck like powerboat course, you need your jet ski license. Things like that ! :)
Hey! Sorry for the late reply. Best way to get experience is to offer your work for free for a day or something. Do day work in exchange for a good letter of recommendation 😊
Hi, very nice video. Have some questions, can u answer? 1. Is 27 years old too late to start? 2. How much body shape matters? And who would consider it, the owner of the boat or, in case, the recruitment agency? am on a journey to drop some weight... it might imbarasd me for the uniform or the swimsuit. Do you think I should put it in the cv? 3. Which languages are required? I speak italian, english, arabic and a little bit of spanish. I read that without french or german you do not find a job..
hey! 27 isn't too late to start, there are plus size people in the industry! both men and women. The owner of the boat can sometimes requests certain types of people but not all owners do. I don't think size/weight matters as I've come across all sizes in yachting. I did say in my cv I was active and had a high fitness level just as an extra bit of info but you don't have to. Its completely up to you whether you put it in or not but Its good to keep in mind that some employers do not care. I only speak English and I had plenty of work - your languages are a huge advantage for you, all though some boats request you don't speak the guests language so they can speak privately. But your languages will be a huge advantage! I hope this helps, wish you the best!
@@annabellehuys thank you for the answer. About my body shape: the provlem is I'd expose a lot of loose skin between my arms and legs. Uniform would be a problem.
I'm from india and I'm 19,, so what are the eligibility criteria and how can i get a job as crew from india As it will be difficult for me to cm there for the interview and what if I don't get selected. So is there any possibility of video interview
Hello! Once you do the course I can guarantee you will find a job. There are so many job opportunities! I worked with an Indian guy once on the boats! But most jobs require you to be in a certain location to be hired - try looking on yotspot for jobs so you can see what the criteria is and get more of an idea. Of course you can’t apply for jobs until you do your course but at least you have an understanding! Hope this helps :)
I worked with people who couldn’t swim - it’s not a requirement that you must know how to swim but I wouldn’t put on your cv that you don’t know how to swim! Maybe wait until you get a job and then pull the captain aside and let him know. As apart of the stcw course you do have to do some pool training - you wear a life jacket though and also climb in life rafts x
yess travelling across the Atlantic back to the Med was pretty rough, waves were crashing over the front deck & we almost lost our rescue boat so captain pulled into the Dominican Republic for 5 days so the weather could calm down which ended up being a really great few days off

what camera was used for the photos in the intro, they all look sooo good
Hi Anabelle, Is it WiFi connection available on yacht ⛵ ? Can we access in our spare time? And how many Hollidays get in a year ?
