    Why do you want to join the super yacht industry? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

      Very nice ”why” that one of yours! Glad for you!
      For a long time i actually had 2 jobs and struggling! Yacht pays better, but long weeks, months aboard.
      I like the intensity of the mission of organising and passing trough the season with a 5 star service or the challenge of solving Technical issues aboard and keeping the boat detailed.
      And for now I feel the need of going out of my comfort zone so that I don’t get numb again.

      @Ricardo Guerreiro Thank you for sharing this. I feel the same way about getting too comfortable. It feels nice at first, but after a while you start to miss the rewards that come from pushing outside of your comfort zone, and taking on challenges.

    What I like of you also is that, you are not the tipical snobbish, yacht crew, you seem a humble man, which is rare on this industry

    Thanks so much for this video, I’ve been a bit lost in life and discovered Yachting and it spoke to me in a deep level. But I’m going on 30 and really wanted to feel adventure and a hardworking job, but thought I couldn’t go to yachting this old, but you know what, i have a WHY and my why is the only thing keeping that dream alive. Thanks

    I didn’t know what to expect, Matthew, I must say that I am very impressed with how many times you have reinvented yourself. “No, that’s not for me, I’m not very good at it” I would be willing to bet that you were great at everything, in fact you said that in your commentary.
    I am thrilled that you have settled down and that you’ve found a career that you mostly love and it’s a line of work that’s not going away. There are more and more very wealthy people that need places to park some cash. You are so sweet, personable, extremely well educated, beautiful, handsome and an all around man that is into high adrenaline sports that require no fear! I would bet money that you are exactly the kind of gentleman that everybody loves and wants to be around. Bravo, Matthew

    I’ve watch a whole bunch of yachting videos talking about the dos and don’ts of getting into the industry, how to dock walk and so on.
    I have to say, this might be the most insightful one yet. I guess there are mant people out there turning to the yachting industry to find fulfilment.
    A career in any industry not sustained won’t provide fulfilment. This video sparked a lot of thought and the way I envision my yachting career future has already changed. Thanks! Your videos help a lot!

    I really enjoy your videos. I find them both entertaining and informative.
    Your videos are why platforms like TH-cam ought to exist. The content you are producing is quite valuable, even to those of us who are intrigued in, thought not interested in, joining the yachting industry.
    I also wanted to thank you for being vulnerable in this video for your viewers. Vulnerability is essential in any learning endeavour and, in this context, also allows you to build great rapport with your viewership.
    Keep doing what you do. My favourite videos you have produced thus far are the videos on finances and crew living accommodations. It is so important to see how ordinary folks get on in their lives. I think we often romanticize what our lives could be, and I find your direct, authentic, and honest approach in teaching us about life at sea quite refreshing.

    This video resonated with me ALOT. Having left the british army after 6 years, I wanted ''out'' but didn't what I wanted to do. I wanted a career, but not something boring and pinned to a desk job. But that said i've just moved into financial advice, as predicted it's dry/boring. I've loved the idea of working on super yachts, something my twin brother has done for past 2 years. Has travelled to some incredible places, and I feel i would gain some incredible experiencs.
    Problem I am up against is a few fold : 1) Yachting is a short term career, and being almost 30 I question if it's time to get a ''proper job''. 2) Having a girlfriend, I know the strain this can put on a relationship. I guess yachting would do that also. 3) To get a good rotation of maybe 4months on 2 months off, I will need to have been in the industry at least 3 years?
    What advise could you kindly give for someone who is enteraining the idea of doing yachting for maybe 3-5 years...before coming back and deciding to do the whole ''normal job'' hum drum.
    Appreciated, love the content!

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Leo, and thank you for sharing your story. I encourage you to recognise that there are so many more choices available to you than just a desk job in finance, or a short-lived career in yachting. Furthermore, I caution you against viewing yachting as an escape that will somehow ease the pain of your inevitable return to "normal" life.
      The yachting industry can provide you with a proper job and a proper career in every sense of the word, but try to think more long-term. Maybe you will choose to stop working on board after 5 years, but this isn’t inevitable. If you do, it doesn’t just have to be straight back to finance. What about all of the shore-based positions that support the yachting industry? Could your skills and experience be useful to a management company, or a brokerage house? What about working as a deck recruitment agent? Or maybe the connections you’ll make in yachting will lead you to any number of other opportunities.
      I mention a book in this video: Start with Why, by Simon Sinek. It helped me to understand the importance of knowing why we do what we do, and how this eventually leads a company (or an individual) to find success no matter what they are doing, or how they are doing it. Maybe you’ll also find some inspiration there!

    I have one question that I was not able to find on the channel. How does age play a role when getting started as a deckhand? I’m a 32 year old man working a management job in Corporate America. My resume shows tremendous career growth but I’m worried that I may be considered “too old” for Yachting. Any insights you have would be so greatly appreciated.

    Love this and I feel that it relates to my work career trying my hand at different things, but now I realise the yacht industry is where I need to be. Personally the positives of working on a yacht outweigh the negatives, unless you have family and kids then it may not be the case. But think you have to make sacrifices of missing out on someones birthday or their wedding if it means achieving your career goals.

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Cronin. I learnt to skydive with Scotty Milne in Empuriabrava, just up the coast from Barcelona. I did the AFF course and then completed the additional jumps to get my A-Licence. We then crossed the Atlantic and I spent a week at Skydive City near Tampa, Florida. After returning to the Mediterranean and whilst based at a shipyard in Barcelona, I would head back up to Empuriabrava whenever I could. In total I think I did about 70-80 jumps, but haven't jumped since 2014.
      It is a wonderful sport and just talking about it now makes me feel like I should pick it up again, this time knowing that it too requires commitment and patience in order to progress. You said you are an ex-skydiver; may I ask why you stopped?

      Work on a Superyacht thanks for the reply. Our paths may have crossed in Empuria then. Need to go back and see my friends there. Also moving around and jumping at different DZ’s is super interesting. Never found the time to align all pieces and make my way to ZHills. Not jumping anymore but still a parachute rigger. No way to fit the jumping with the free time/money/family. There is a bit more to that, but i might be back some day. Did 2000+ jumps, wingsuit coach, tandem pilot, rigger, video man, and met some of the greatest people thanks to skydiving. I believe it is a microcosm like yachting can be.

    I found this video very insightful :) I'm currently working towards acquiring my RYA qualifications in order to be able to work commercially in the yachting industry in the future. Which qualifications did you hold prior to taking your MCA 200 exam? Love watching your content and look forward to hearing from you :)

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Maximilian. For the MCA Master 200 I needed the basic STCW certs, Yachtmaster Offshore, GMDSS GOC and HELM Operational. I also did the ECDIS course so as to remove that limitation from my COC, and had my Efficient Deckhand and PSCRB (although these aren't required). Good luck with your courses. Which one are you working on at the moment?

      Hi Matthew :) thank you for replying to my comment. I am currently doing my RYA Intermediate Powerboat course in Poole. My short term plan is to hopefully complete the RYA Powerboat scheme (at least have taken the Advanced Powerboat course) by the end of Summer 2021. I have quite a way to go but as you know, these things take time :)

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Maximilian Ottersbach Yes I know what you mean when you say that these things take time! But in the end it's time well spent and it sounds like you're preparing yourself well. It's important to be able to demonstrate good boat handling skills to a yacht who will be putting you in charge of a tender with a six (or seven) figure price tag!

    • @frankv4271
      @frankv4271 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WorkonaSuperyacht No, if I was an owner, or potentially a new owner of a yacht of the three sizes, how would I know which Yacht Management Company would be better suited for my size MY? Which one would be better suited for each size category small, medium and large.

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Frank V Many management companies cater to all sizes of superyachts, but they typically prefer big ones because it allows them to charge higher fees for their services. As to which one is best for an owner, this will depend on a variety of factors including location of offices around the world, fee structure etc. However, the most likely reason for choosing a particular management company is because the broker who helped the owner buy the yacht works for them. If you have built a relationship with a broker and trust their judgement, it makes sense to continue using them for management where possible. It is normally done on an annual basis, so if the owner isn't satisfied after one year then they can switch to another management company.
      Broadly speaking, the bigger and more established brokerage houses are able to offer the most competitive management packages for the largest yachts. Similarly, for smaller yachts where there is less competition from the big players in the industry, smaller management companies may be able to offer a better package.

    What is smoking policy on a charter superyacht? Seems like it could make a real mess and devalue the boat, but people wealthy enough to afford this often don't like to be told "no"

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess this is another one of those "depends on which yacht" questions! It's been a long while since I worked on a charter yacht, but in my experience smoking on the interior was not allowed. However, the Captain struggled to enforced this rule! As you say, the charterer may well feel that for £300,000 per week they should be able to enjoy a cigarette wherever they like.
      On the other hand there are many owners who smoke in their own yacht, and I don't see why this privilege wouldn't be extended to charter guests.

    I’m planning on being a steward/deckhand for next summer, i understand the certificates and qualifications needed, once i get them how exactly do i get a job on a yacht?

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Ollie. One of the best ways to get started is to base yourself in a major yachting hub. Here in the Mediterranean, Antibes or Palma are your options, any time between about March and September. You can then walk the docks every day, handing out your CV, and asking the crew of each yacht if they have any work available.
      In addition, you should sign up online with all of the yacht crew agencies, and then visit them in person once you get to the Mediterranean.
      I have videos on the channel that describe both the process of dockwalking: th-cam.com/video/P9kuhN4Kufk/w-d-xo.html
      and also how to sign up online with crew agencies: th-cam.com/video/2BweYh_AJPE/w-d-xo.html
      Who knows what will change in the short to medium term as a result of Brexit and COVID-19, but these are the two methods that helped most people (including me!) get started.
      On a different note, I really like your YT channel!

    • @iTzOllie
      @iTzOllie 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much that information is really helpful, I decided deckhand would be the best option for me. When I actually go dock walking and I approach each yacht what exactly do I say? Is it like a quick 'Hello I'm looking for work here's my CV' type thing or what? And thanks haha I like your TH-cam channel as well! :)

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ItsOllie Just introduce yourself, and ask if they are have any job opportunities or day work available. They will more than likely already know that is what you're going to ask.
      They will often be busy, and might not have much time to talk; however, if they do start a conversation, it's the perfect chance to build a bit of rapport so that they remember you.
