Yugi actually didn’t break the rules against Dartz. His fusion monster also had infinite attack, but the dub said it was “above infinite” for some crap reason, and both monsters were destroyed from that battle, just like the real game, Timaeus’s effect also allows it to float into the monsters used to bring it out when it’s destroyed, which we can see happen after its destruction.

A long time ago with old school cards, my friend had a trap hole, 2 di-spells, a dark hole and fissure on the field along with 3 monsters and 2500 life points left. I had no monsters on the field and 2 face down cards and was about to lose and only like 500 life points left. I pull soul exchange after trusting in the heart of the cards and play it; my friend activates dispell; then I activate mystical space typhoon to negate; in which he activates his second di-spell to negate my negation; then I activate dust tornado to negate his second di-spell. After which soul exchange activates and I manage to convince my friend that soul exchange works like in the TV show. So I sacrificed his 3 monsters to summon Moisture Creature. He goes to activate his trap hole, but Moisture Creature special ability destroys all magic and trap cards on the field. Then I gave the famous Kaiba speech and obliterated his life points with a direct attack. I was so proud myself that day 😌. Best cheap clutch ever!

Bakura can't be defeated without Plot Armor. The Writers sabotaged him constantly - very sad. He was still epic, but his true potential was never used. I hope for a Revival in another Form. Seriously, i think he could come back - i mean, think about all the Parallel Universes and Alternate Timelines! You could make a whole series about him!
Same with Magical Hats, Shadow Spell, Negate Attack, Deck Destruction Virus of Death / Crush Card Virus, and numerous others. Time Wizard, Copycat, and others that are now monsters also used to be Magic or Trap Cards originally.

Duelist Kingdom Rules: 1: Tribute Summoning hasn't been invented yet lol 2: Direct Attacks haven't either. 3: Monster Types and certain Attributes get a 30% Field Power Bonus if you can rationalize it on that field. 4: Monster with FPB ignore spell card induced stat changes. 5: If your monster is destroyed by card effect you take 50% of it's original ATK as damage. 6: This is DnD the Card Game, if you can make an argument for something happening, or the computers say it is, then it is happening. 7: Unless Pegasus says so, BS is a effect. 8: Fusion is just making two or more monster share their spot really, they're still the component monster, just don't expect the ATK to reflect that, 'kay? 9: Everything runs somewhat on DnD 10: For whatever unholy reason, magic is useless on machine types but Spell Cards work fine. Why didn't they play more Fissure and Black Hole is anyone's guess. 11: Fields act like nature, sometimes. Put a moon on a ocean field? You lose plenty of fields. Have a monster with "Giant" in it's name? It can kill the moon. Moon's gone? Water too. 12: It doesn't matter if Cocoon of Evolution got busted by Gaia, the moth will hatch in spite of it.
14) Battle Ox has a Pyro-monster destroying effect that it doesn't in the game. 15) If you were hit by the overpowered version of Crush Card, you still draw the 'destroyed' monster cards but still cannot use them.

The fact that Yami Yugi cried when he made his finishing attack against Joey kinda hurts. Because it shows that he is willing to even trick his own friend in a duel to win but for the benefit of everyone else. He didn’t like what he did at all but it was necessary for him to advance further. If there was another way to beat Joey he would’ve done so.

If we want to talk about cheating with the Mammoth Graveyard fusion, Kaiba was also cheating since each of the Blue Eyes White Dragon heads could attack independently.
The real issue is using the polymorization with cards still in your hand and not in play. Too many times theyve pulled that shit and I'm like nah Brahms these guys gotta be summoned first then fuzed lol

I hate how people ignore the fact this was all legal in the anime/mange. 1) First of all some cards such as Revival Jam have different effects in the show. Their real life cards are usually nerffed if the show effect is too OP. Some cards don't even translate quite the same like Time Wizard. 2) In Season 1, the whole point was that there were secrets within the cards. That is how fictional duel monsters was played. It wasn't cheating, it was understanding the game. Many characters made allusions to this as early as episode 3 when the gang runs into Weevil. Yugi was exceptional at the game because he played it a millennia ago.

@Doro That's been a rule in the card game from the start, but not in the anime. Hell, Yugi even kept his "Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast" in his main deck in the first season, IIRC. (In-universe, Duelist Kingdom had custom rules, so most "cheating" is just because it was literally a different game with the same pieces.)
@Doro That seems more to be that BEUD was just treated _weird_ in Duelist Kingdom, considering each of its heads was technically a separate monster (and could be revived with Monster Reborn, instead of it bringing back an actual BEWD). So, it was probably more just adding another monster into the mix than making an entirely new card. Although, considering the Legendary Knights, or just how large Jaden's fusion deck had to be in _GX_ (I believe it was separate by then, not 100% sure), some fusion monsters might very well have just been created on the fly.

Well, in Yugioh's defense: You have to remember the Official Rules in the Real world don't really apply in the Anime. Many of the cards have abilities that don't exist in the real world. The Egyptian God cards could not be used in real world Tournements until a legal version of the Egyptian God cards came out.

And concerning Lightforce Sword the card was originally going to be a released as a Spell Card but was released as a Trap Card due animation time-constraints with the anime.
Not to mention that the anime and the actual card game came out at different times so the anime (particularly first season) took a LOT of liberties with cards. Once second season started, cards starting lining up a bit better with the actual card game.

Kevin Banuelos when you think about it the trap card lightforce sword doesn't really help you that much and is almost useless what the card does is lightforce sword randomly selects a card in your opponents hand and that card is removed from play for four turns if the person is only holding one card it's removed from play lightforce sword was more usefull in the anime then in the yugioh video games in the anime and yugioh video games the spell card swords of reaviling light helped you out a lot more because swords of reviling light stops your opponent from attacking you for three turns. but of course the games are different than the anime so the three turns go by quicker in the games.
Duelist kingdom arc is released 3-4 years after the manga release (48 chapters per year and the arc is about chapter 120 to more than 200s). I guess because of its popularity, the Battle City arc is writtern follow the Trading Card Game

By the rules of the game, his cards effect would still count since the anime never mentions how Brain Control or any controlling card would interact with revival based cards. Since nearly every card in the anime is way stronger than the TCG CoughGodCardsCough, it’s not hard to imagine that Brain Control would follow this ruling.

this is actually not a cheating moment if you look at it carefully. now yugi sent his monster in to attack and use their abilities with cards that would help to reflect that attack. when played out it would equal up to infinity. Now knight of destiny has the ability to take the attack points of the monster it is battling and use them to his own so when it clashed with divine serpent it took its attack points and then destroyed it and itself but special summon the three knights.
I look it at this way: They both had the same attack points, but yugi's monster was Dark Magician Girl that needed to stay on the field, but the divine serpent was destroyed due to the equal amount of attack points

Uh....winning Slifer by using brain control on Revival Jam was not cheating, it was a genius move by Yami Yugi that turned an unbeatable 5-card strategy on itself and led to the mime drawing all his cards until his deck was empty. Yugi wins be default because the mime had no cards left to play.
His point was that the first time Revival Jam died it would have gone to The mime's graveyard as it was originally his card, then Yugi wouldn't have been able to bring it back. So the cheating part was that Revival Jam went to Yugi's graveyard instead of Mime's

It was a lot better in battle city but there were still SCREW THE RULES moments in battle city. Like when Kabia tributes XYZ dragon cannon for Obelisk when it’s one monster, not 3.
I want to clarify a little bit on the Light Force Sword situation: in the Japanese anime, it was a spell card(as were skull dice and virus cannon", but the dub gave them a trap card border so they'd be similar to the actual card in the ocg/tcg; however, you can keep this episode on the list because Yugi used some crazy rule that Summoned Skull actually powers up his Alpha the Magnet Warrior by 200 ATK points and ends the duel.

Let's see if you mention the one where Yugi wins against Kaibe's 3 headed blue eyes white dragon with a Kariboh and a multiplier card. Making a endless stream of Karibohs and since Karibohs nullifies your attack damage basically made it a ultimate defense. Sounds good but it doesn't work this way in the game.
Out of all the yugioh protagonist . Yusei is the true duelist . Yeah i know he had the crismon dragon help .but that only because the crismon dragon was upgrading yuseis cards to defeat stronger opponents . Like quasar dragon and shooting star dragon . Sorry but this list sucks! Watchmojo, you didn't do your research, that's how I feel. You failed to take into account that card effects and mechanics work differently in the anime and the manga compared to real life game. These are two different mediums. When the Duelist Kingdom arc was airing, the game wasn't properly refined, which meant that there were several rules that existed in manga and anime version of the game, which made it broken. When Battle City came around with the new rules, it was making the game better, but there were new cards introduced, which were overpowered for dramatic purposes. The makers of the real life card game recognised this and simplified their effects, which made them less powerful but also made the game easier. The anime and manga universes of Yu-Gi-Oh! set in a fictional world, so some of the real life rules don't apply there. Yugi and Dark (Yami) Yugi never cheated. It's frequently said that if you put all your feelings into building your deck, it can be relied on to help you win. That's what they do.
Yep and they did a good job putting thousands of little kids under the illusion their cards could do things that in reality, they could not. What about in Joey's first duel against Mai, Yugi switches Joey's top card of his deck to the Time Wizard. Go back and watch the part when Jory is drawing the card, and you see Yugi doing his magic
I can explain his ability to draw any cards he wants. First of all he doesn't cheat. Yugi is actually the reincarnation of the chosen Monarch "The Pharaoh" or "Atem" Atem was able to control most of the monsters to his liking and obeyed the pharaoh. It makes sense he can draw any card he likes because he can control fate itself and the cards obey only to him in the dire situations. In this dark game they play he can almost get out of any situation. That is his power. To tip the impossible odds in his favor.
To be fair, most of these came from the first to second season of Yu-Gi-Oh, back when the concept of making a fleshed out game about it a pipe dream and the rules were made up on the fly. Truly a lawless time. Later arcs like the Waking the Dragons arc though were just BS though.

It's not until the next season that the modern rules were applied. 8- Actually to be fair the 4Kids version made it a Trap Card through edits (like it is in the actual card game). However it's a spell card in the original Japanese version. 7- Although anime effects and the actual cards are not one to one I somewhat agree that it's cheating. Although one could argue mathematically that X being the ATK of the opponents monster and Y being the player's monster's ATK. If X-(Y+C) and X=Y than that would mean regardless of what what the ATK is the player's monster would still win. Or if X-Y and X=Y than that would mean both monsters get destroyed. 6- Same reason as #9 5- Actually the entire loops works with only the fact that Revival Jam's effect in the anime is not the same one as in real life so it's not really cheating. 4- Same reason as #9 and #6 3- I agree that's cheating though he didn't do it it was Kaiba rather. Like #10 2- I mean I never heard a rule against in any game that it's illegal to have 2 people sharing a spot. 1- Well that's not really cheating but rather adapting your deck to your opponent's own
Lightforce Sword was a quick-play spell in the anime, it was just incorrectly animated as a trap in the dub. And against Strings, Battle City rules state that cards are sent to the graveyard of the player that controlled them at the time, even if they weren't the card's original owner, so that's legal.

Sammy Ramirez That’s not how that works. You can activate a Quick-Play Spell at any point during your turn (besides the Damage Step), but if you set it then you have to wait until the beginning of your opponent’s turn to activate it (like a Trap Card)
Don't forget, during season 1, no one sacrificed any tributes to summon any Level 5 or higher monsters, so everyone dueling cheated in season 1. Not to mention some monsters "having resistance" to certain types of other monsters (this isn't Magic The Gathering). Lots dueling Shenanigans in Season 1.

His fusion monster also had infinite attack, but the dub said it was “above infinite” for some crap reason, and both monsters were destroyed from that battle, just like the real game, Timaeus’s effect also allows it to float into the monsters used to bring it out when it’s destroyed, which we can see happen after its destruction.

A long time ago with old school cards, my friend had a trap hole, 2 di-spells, a dark hole and fissure on the field along with 3 monsters and 2500 life points left. I had no monsters on the field and 2 face down cards and was about to lose and only like 500 life points left. I pull soul exchange after trusting in the heart of the cards and play it; my friend activates dispell; then I activate mystical space typhoon to negate; in which he activates his second di-spell to negate my negation; then I activate dust tornado to negate his second di-spell. After which soul exchange activates and I manage to convince my friend that soul exchange works like in the TV show. So I sacrificed his 3 monsters to summon Moisture Creature. He goes to activate his trap hole, but Moisture Creature special ability destroys all magic and trap cards on the field. Then I gave the famous Kaiba speech and obliterated his life points with a direct attack. I was so proud myself that day 😌. Best cheap clutch ever!

Bakura can't be defeated without Plot Armor. The Writers sabotaged him constantly - very sad. He was still epic, but his true potential was never used. I hope for a Revival in another Form. Lightforce Sword was actually a Spell in the original anime, it's just the dub change it to look like a Trap to match the real-life version.
Same with Magical Hats, Shadow Spell, Negate Attack, Deck Destruction Virus of Death / Crush Card Virus, and numerous others.
Time Wizard, Copycat, and others that are now monsters also used to be Magic or Trap Cards originally.

3: Monster Types and certain Attributes get a 30% Field Power Bonus if you can rationalize it on that field.
4: Monster with FPB ignore spell card induced stat changes.
5: If your monster is destroyed by card effect you take 50% of it's original ATK as damage.
6: This is DnD the Card Game, if you can make an argument for something happening, or the computers say it is, then it is happening.
7: Unless Pegasus says so, BS is a effect.
8: Fusion is just making two or more monster share their spot really, they're still the component monster, just don't expect the ATK to reflect that, 'kay?
9: Everything runs somewhat on DnD
10: For whatever unholy reason, magic is useless on machine types but Spell Cards work fine. Why didn't they play more Fissure and Black Hole is anyone's guess.
11: Fields act like nature, sometimes. Put a moon on a ocean field? You lose plenty of fields. Have a monster with "Giant" in it's name? It can kill the moon. Moon's gone? Water too.
12: It doesn't matter if Cocoon of Evolution got busted by Gaia, the moth will hatch in spite of it.

Season 1 doesn't have any kind of working rules. It's kind of a mess in that way. Season 2 onward fixes this thankfully.

The fact that Yami Yugi cried when he made his finishing attack against Joey kinda hurts. Because it shows that he is willing to even trick his own friend in a duel to win but for the benefit of everyone else. He didn’t like what he did at all but it was necessary for him to advance further. If there was another way to beat Joey he would’ve done so.

If we want to talk about cheating with the Mammoth Graveyard fusion, Kaiba was also cheating since each of the Blue Eyes White Dragon heads could attack independently.

I hate how people ignore the fact this was all legal in the anime/mange.
1) First of all some cards such as Revival Jam have different effects in the show. Their real life cards are usually nerffed if the show effect is too OP. Some cards don't even translate quite the same like Time Wizard.
2) In Season 1, the whole point was that there were secrets within the cards. That is how fictional duel monsters was played. It wasn't cheating, it was understanding the game. Many characters made allusions to this as early as episode 3 when the gang runs into Weevil. Yugi was exceptional at the game because he played it a millennia ago.
Also how some of the rules changed in season 2 to better match irl standards. The characters had to learn it

@Doro That's been a rule in the card game from the start, but not in the anime. Hell, Yugi even kept his "Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast" in his main deck in the first season, IIRC. (In-universe, Duelist Kingdom had custom rules, so most "cheating" is just because it was literally a different game with the same pieces.)
@Doro That seems more to be that BEUD was just treated _weird_ in Duelist Kingdom, considering each of its heads was technically a separate monster (and could be revived with Monster Reborn, instead of it bringing back an actual BEWD). So, it was probably more just adding another monster into the mix than making an entirely new card.
Although, considering the Legendary Knights, or just how large Jaden's fusion deck had to be in _GX_ (I believe it was separate by then, not 100% sure), some fusion monsters might very well have just been created on the fly.

Well, in Yugioh's defense: You have to remember the Official Rules in the Real world don't really apply in the Anime. Many of the cards have abilities that don't exist in the real world. The Egyptian God cards could not be used in real world Tournements until a legal version of the Egyptian God cards came out.

And concerning Lightforce Sword the card was originally going to be a released as a Spell Card but was released as a Trap Card due animation time-constraints with the anime.
Not to mention that the anime and the actual card game came out at different times so the anime (particularly first season) took a LOT of liberties with cards. Once second season started, cards starting lining up a bit better with the actual card game.

Kevin Banuelos when you think about it the trap card lightforce sword doesn't really help you that much and is almost useless what the card does is lightforce sword randomly selects a card in your opponents hand and that card is removed from play for four turns if the person is only holding one card it's removed from play lightforce sword was more usefull in the anime then in the yugioh video games in the anime and yugioh video games the spell card swords of reaviling light helped you out a lot more because swords of reviling light stops your opponent from attacking you for three turns. but of course the games are different than the anime so the three turns go by quicker in the games.
Duelist kingdom arc is released 3-4 years after the manga release (48 chapters per year and the arc is about chapter 120 to more than 200s). I guess because of its popularity, the Battle City arc is writtern follow the Trading Card Game
Brain control lasts for one TURN. Slifer constantly attacked, NOT ending the turn. So Yugi’s strategy works.
Yeah, so that one isn’t technically cheating. By the rules of the game, his cards effect would still count since the anime never mentions how Brain Control or any controlling card would interact with revival based cards. Since nearly every card in the anime is way stronger than the TCG CoughGodCardsCough, it’s not hard to imagine that Brain Control would follow this ruling.
Yugi would have still had to pay life points to bring Revival Jam back each time

Mathematically it's actually correct. Not all infinity's are the same. There are some infinity's larger than others.
this is actually not a cheating moment if you look at it carefully. now yugi sent his monster in to attack and use their abilities with cards that would help to reflect that attack. when played out it would equal up to infinity. I look it at this way: They both had the same attack points, but yugi's monster was Dark Magician Girl that needed to stay on the field, but the divine serpent was destroyed due to the equal amount of attack points

Uh....winning Slifer by using brain control on Revival Jam was not cheating, it was a genius move by Yami Yugi that turned an unbeatable 5-card strategy on itself and led to the mime drawing all his cards until his deck was empty. Yugi wins be default because the mime had no cards left to play.
His point was that the first time Revival Jam died it would have gone to The mime's graveyard as it was originally his card, then Yugi wouldn't have been able to bring it back. So the cheating part was that Revival Jam went to Yugi's graveyard instead of Mime's

It was a lot better in battle city but there were still SCREW THE RULES moments in battle city. Like when Kabia tributes XYZ dragon cannon for Obelisk when it’s one monster, not 3.

I want to clarify a little bit on the Light Force Sword situation: in the Japanese anime, it was a spell card(as were skull dice and virus cannon", but the dub gave them a trap card border so they'd be similar to the actual card in the ocg/tcg; however, you can keep this episode on the list because Yugi used some crazy rule that Summoned Skull actually powers up his Alpha the Magnet Warrior by 200 ATK points and ends the duel.

Let's see if you mention the one where Yugi wins against Kaibe's 3 headed blue eyes white dragon with a Kariboh and a multiplier card. Making a endless stream of Karibohs and since Karibohs nullifies your attack damage basically made it a ultimate defense. Sounds good but it doesn't work this way in the game.

Sorry but this list sucks! Watchmojo, you didn't do your research, that's how I feel. You failed to take into account that card effects and mechanics work differently in the anime and the manga compared to real life game. These are two different mediums. When the Duelist Kingdom arc was airing, the game wasn't properly refined, which meant that there were several rules that existed in manga and anime version of the game, which made it broken. When Battle City came around with the new rules, it was making the game better, but there were new cards introduced, which were overpowered for dramatic purposes. The makers of the real life card game recognised this and simplified their effects, which made them less powerful but also made the game easier.
The anime and manga universes of Yu-Gi-Oh! set in a fictional world, so some of the real life rules don't apply there. Yugi and Dark (Yami) Yugi never cheated. It's frequently said that if you put all your feelings into building your deck, it can be relied on to help you win. That's what they do.
Yep and they did a good job putting thousands of little kids under the illusion their cards could do things that in reality, they could not. Admit it, Yugi's plot armor was soooo strong that the card game rules had to be bent around keeping his character winning. Am I wrong? You just said this is what happened

I can explain his ability to draw any cards he wants. First of all he doesn't cheat. Yugi is actually the reincarnation of the chosen Monarch "The Pharaoh" or "Atem" Atem was able to control most of the monsters to his liking and obeyed the pharaoh. It makes sense he can draw any card he likes because he can control fate itself and the cards obey only to him in the dire situations. In this dark game they play he can almost get out of any situation. That is his power. To tip the impossible odds in his favor.

To be fair, most of these came from the first to second season of Yu-Gi-Oh, back when the concept of making a fleshed out game about it a pipe dream and the rules were made up on the fly. Truly a lawless time. Later arcs like the Waking the Dragons arc though were just BS though.

8- Actually to be fair the 4Kids version made it a Trap Card through edits (like it is in the actual card game). However it's a spell card in the original Japanese version.
7- Although anime effects and the actual cards are not one to one I somewhat agree that it's cheating. Although one could argue mathematically that X being the ATK of the opponents monster and Y being the player's monster's ATK. If X-(Y+C) and X=Y than that would mean regardless of what what the ATK is the player's monster would still win. Or if X-Y and X=Y than that would mean both monsters get destroyed.

Lightforce Sword was a quick-play spell in the anime, it was just incorrectly animated as a trap in the dub. And against Strings, Battle City rules state that cards are sent to the graveyard of the player that controlled them at the time, even if they weren't the card's original owner, so that's legal.
Fun Fact: In the Japanese dub, Lightforce Sword is a quick-play Spell
Even then, quick-play spells need to be set on the field before they can be activated outside of your turn.

Not to mention some monsters "having resistance" to certain types of other monsters (this isn't Magic The Gathering). Lots dueling Shenanigans in Season 1.
Would like to add that Season 1 EVERYTHING was against the rules. None of it followed the actual game logic.
