I don’t think Konami thinks that either. In order to unlock Yami Marik in duel links, you have to win against Marik with 1000 or less LP as Joey.
FACTS
Joey lowkey the best character in the show. His development over the series was phenomenal. He went from bully, trash card player to legendary hero.
Still had pretty trash cards in the grand scheme of things. And always fell for the same traps because his strat was ALWAYS the damn same.
Grimrapings his all or nothing strategy was pretty dumb but that’s the point of his game style
He may not have been the greatest duelist but still his development truly was amazing especially knowing his loyalty and bravery shows no bounds...he took on a real attack from a god
And it didn’t kill him
Zachary Volquardts in the manga hes the unofficial champion of Duelist Kingdom after Yugi gives up his title and hands him the prize money
Mark Galan I know I read the manga lol considering unlike the anime he didn’t duel yugi in manga during duelist kingdom which I found interesting
This man won with Time Wizard in his deck. He deserves praise for that feat alone.

Let's be real, Joey's the best duelist compared to Kaiba and Yugi since he didn't need broken God cards to win against Marik.

One side note about Joey's Duelist abilities and his Red Eyes Black Dragon. At the end of Battle City, Yugi and Joey faced off. Duel wasn't shown, but next season Joey had his dragon back. If they were following Battle City rules, that means Joey beat Yugi. Though I doubt Yugi would use his Egyptian God Cards on Joey, Joey still managed to beat Yugi to reclaim his dragon. This also shows his character, because Joey only got his dragon, if he did win, he could've asked for ANY of Yugi's cards. Imagine Joey with an Egyptian God card. I

I think my favorite time Joey's Time Wizard's Time Magic backfired actually WASN'T whenever it landed on a Skull. It was when it transformed Yugi's Dark Magician into Dark Sage.

(2 hours later)

I've been watching YuGiOh ever since its first-ever episode came out and Joey's deck is still my favorite

I knew Red Eyes was going to be number one, but I was honestly expecting Time Wizard to be higher up on the list. Joey really relied on that card to single handily got him through many of his Duelist Kingdom fights where he became the second place runner up.
Me, too, my friend. I nearly have the entire archetype of red-eyes black dragon heck I even two of fusion forms.

Lava Battleguard isn't really Joey's card. He used it in one duel (against Rex in Duelist Kingdom) when he noticed Tristan had it and asked if he could borrow it so he could use it alongside his own Swamp Battleguard.
They’re low tier cards but still good they’re his duellist kingdom cards

This Top 10 remembered me of one of Yu-Gi-Oh!'s biggest cliches: "Joey goes toe-to-toe against the main villain of the arc and almost win, but loses in the very end so Yugi/The Pharaoh can come in and save the day".
He won that in my eyes. Vs a literal GOD on the field and he had it cornered like a little rat.

In the Waking of Dragons Arc, Joey gained other good high level powerhouses like Megacyber And Esp: Cyber-Tech Alligator. It's a shame that throughout his other duels, Joey didn't keep continue using his other strong 4 or below monsters that were balanced enough in ATK & DEF besides Gearfried, Alligator's Sword, or Rocket Warrior; like: Axe Raider, Little Winguard, or Hayabusa Knight, but instead kept using & added more Landstars.... But I have to say I love the summoning sounds Baby Dragon makes in English!!!

I have to wonder, how come Joey never used a Meteor Dragon in his Deck? I know it’s not exactly good with only 1800 Attack and requires a tribute, but fusing it with Red Eyes creates Meteor Black Dragon and its amazing 3500 Attack. Just seems like a missed opportunity if you ask me.
Joey wasn't never a fusion type duelist. He used heavily Warriors and many Beast monsters. I'm fine the creative team giving him Gliford as his ultimate Warrior and Red Eyes as his ultimate Beast. They even sneak in Jinzo as his second ace monster
Joey's most powerful card is the ass pull card he plays in pretty much every match.
