This is one of my most favorite songs ever! When I was in college, I dated a guy who was in a band that was under the management of Atlanta legend Billy Lowrey. The moment I heard it, I bought the 45 and took it to him to learn. They did and played it at every fraternity party and dance in Middle Georgia. The Nightwalkers even opened for Billy Joe Royal. Fond memories of a great song!

This not me but from someone else--------
    Jon R.1 year ago (edited)
? and the Mysterians stayed at my family's motel in Florida when I was a teenager. They stayed there several times when they were booked to play at the Beach Colosseum about 16 miles away. I got to meet them and they are all really great guys. Their keyboard player would come in and play our grand piano, which I inherited, and is about ten feet from me right now as I type. He was only around fifteen or so and you'd think he might not be that great as a player, technically, going by what he did on the single, but he was an excellent solo pianist.
And ? himself would come in and use my acrylic paints to paint pictures, which he kept, unfortunately. You never saw him without his trademark dark glasses. And he loves the color orange. One time the band was there, their bass player was Mel Schacher, who later became the bass player for major rock band Grand Funk Railroad. I met him too. He didn't say a lot and was very serious, but seemed friendly enough. Sometimes they'd take their instruments in one of their rooms and play and I'd listen outside. Our switchboard would always get lots of calls from girls wanting to know if they were staying there, but the band asked us to tell them no. I once asked ? if he wanted to hear my ? impression and he said yes, so I said "boop", in a high voice, like he does towards the end of the song. It cracked him up.
I did get an autographed copy of a song they were about to come out with called "Girl (You Captivate Me)". I still have it. "96 Tears" is one of my favorite songs, and has been covered by many big stars, including Aretha Franklin. They still play it on the oldies stations. I was pretty lucky for a kid back then.--- Burty1968 HOW COOL WAS THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Too many teardrops for one heart to be crying
Too many teardrops for one heart to carry on
You're way on top now since you left me
You're always laughing way down at me
But watch out now, I'm gonna get there
We'll be together for just a little while
And then I'm gonna put you way down here
And you'll start crying ninety-six tears
    Cry, cry
And when the sun comes up, I'll be on top
You'll be right down there, looking up
And I might wave, come up here
But I don't see you waving now
I'm way down here, wondering how
I'm gonna get you but I know now
I'll just cry, cry, I'll just cry
Too many teardrops for one heart to be crying
Too many teardrops for one heart to carry on
    You're gonna cry ninety-six tears
    You're gonna cry ninety-six tears
You're gonna cry, cry, cry, cry now
You're gonna cry, cry, cry, cry
    Ninety-six tears
Come on and let me hear you cry, now
    Ninety-six tears, woo
    I wanna hear you cry
Night and day, yeah, all night long
Uh, ninety-six tears, cry, cry, cry
Come on, baby, let me hear you cry now, all night long
Uh, ninety-six tears, yeah, come on now
