Ok so House Of The Dragon Episode 8 is now out and the brand new entry is currently up in the Aunty like Jon Snow in Season 7. It's a big family affair with the sides metaphorically burning down the house. Dracareys. There's a lot to unpack from this one and throughout the video we're gonna be recapping the plot, pointing out all the easter eggs and talking about how it differs from the book Fire and Blood. Now the entry combines several years from the timeline in order to tell it's story. The two major events in it are the death of Vaemond which is later followed by King Viserys who sadly passes away at the end of the entry.
In the books the first of these happened in 126 AC with the latter happening 3 years later in 129. Therefore they've kinda combined several events into this hour long episode and according to the creative team this will be the last time jump in the series.
From here on out we will be travelling into the dance of the dragons which is described as being the far more elegant name for the civil war amongst the Targaryens. This was foreshadowed all the way back in episode 1 with this line from an elderly Rhaenyra.

Now the episode is titled Lord Of The Tides which is a title traditionally held by the heads of House Velaryon. The people who gain this instantly get the island of Driftmark along with the naval powers of Black Water Bay. This also typically grants them the position of Master Of Ships on the council and it's a heavily saught after position.
Most of this episode centres around one single paragraph in the book that talks about Vaemond claiming to be lord of the tides and then getting beheaded before he's fed to Syrax.

Seeing Viserys just wanting his family to love each other and be happy really really made me sad knowing how things are about to go.
Yes it was sad. My wife and I was like that happiness will last about 5 mins.
His acting was phenomenal there too. It actually was sad knowing what we know and just in general
Paddy was absolutely amazing this episode and the entire series. I’m really hoping he wins an award or at the least nominations for his work on HotD.

Keep in mind is has very literally been 30 years. Viserys would be in his early 70s and living with a crippling disease (which they've outright said is leprosy). 30 years is a very, very (almost entirely pointlessly) long time for "poison". Its been years sense otto came back, at least 7, and the king is still hanging on.

Paddy Considine gave such a magnificent performance in this episode that deserves every award. The scene with him making his way to the throne to support his daughter despite being in such agony and then having Daemon help him up there was so powerful to watch. I'm glad that the last time he was with his whole family was peaceful (or as peaceful as they can get), but damn his final moments were heartbreaking.

He has done amazing all season long. He is the true MVP
I loved his character.. he was so human and seemed to really love his family a lot. Seeing him deteriorating was heartbreaking and I think reminded a lot of us of seeing an elderly family member age and eventually pass on. I'm really going to miss his character a lot-- the actor was fantastic.

Paddy Considine’s entrance into the thrown room in episode 8 brought me to tears. Not like in a sobbing, drama queen way but admiring the characters’ drive to keep his family together. This man deserves an award.
Pure emotional power this 8th chapter. And you are correct. The Kings entrance. Remarkable moment. Outstanding achievements in acting and writing during the last 25 minutes.
I think we’re in for a helluva ride people.

Viserys made me cry, reminded me too much of my grandfather. Paddy deserves every Emmy they have for this role, Viserys was such a kind soul and a beautiful father.

I love how silently commanding Daemon is. When Vaemond calls his grand nephews bastards and insults his wife he beheads him without question. At the family dinner later that day when Aemond calls his grand nephews "Strong" and provokes a battle he immediately de-escalates the situation by stepping between them and by merely eyeing Aemond. He is easily my favourite character in the series currently.
I never much cared for Daemon. Until he helped his brother up the throne steps and put the crown back on his head.

If you have ever had a loved one who has fallen ill this episode hit home. Viserys’s performance was heartwarming for his love for both sides of his family and heartbreaking for how his confusion at the end forced Alicent’s hand to carry on her duty of presenting Aegon as the true heir. I am happy Viserys passed believing he united his families.
I've had two. His scenes with Rhaenyra had me actually crying. His relationship with her reminds me of my father and I, he died in 2003 and everyone under the sun knows I was a Daddy's girl.

My father passed away 13 years ago from cancer and my mother is currently dealing with cancer this episode struck me so hard and had me fighting back tears. @@ajordan1976 Noo not at all Im watching and have to do something for one of my kids and miss something sometimes,he told Rhaenyra about all of what he was saying in one of the earlier episodes he was talking abt Rhaenyra he thought he was talking to Rhaenyra and the Aegon he was talking abt was the previous King Aegon. Alicent didn't know wth he was talking abt do she heard what she wanted to.

Watching Viserys slow walk into the throne room being announced was the most epic moment this season. The 1st time he truly looked like the most powerful man in Westeros, even though he also resembled the crypt keeper from “tales from the crypt”.
Viserys brought tears to my eyes when he showed up for rhaenyra. Reminded me of this time my dad totally surprised me 😇

This is the first time GOT had me almost in tears the whole episode. Also, I do believe Daemon was in his feelings for the first time ever. In his own way.
Agreed about Daemon. He could barely look at his brother…he would have broken down. Then you see Daemon gather himself quickly to be strong through the moment.
Daemon always loved his brother, just like he always loved Rhaenyra. Little brothers are always a pain in the ass to their older brothers, doesn’t mean they don’t love them….

In his own way daemon was teaching him his place and he will always be below daemon and asserting his dominance.

It’s also interesting symbolism that as viserys has his mask off, the half of his face that is rotting is also the same side of the dinner table where the Hightower’s and his sons sit. And also when Rhaenyra & Daemon come to see him & later Rhaenyra alone... They're on the side that's not rotting away. But when Alicent comes to give him milk of the poppy before he dies, she sits besides him on the side that's rotting away.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve been giving him something to make him die. They kept giving him milk of the poppy to keep him sedated so they can do their dirt without him there but whenn Daemon came he shut that shit down

Otto Hightower 100% poisoned the King, when he was fired, the king survived a 10y time jump when nobody expected. Otto come back and the king was dying…

I am still trying to figure out how the shit otto came back as the hand, I guess it was his idiot daughter, but then the king did not dismiss him either.....all the plans to take over the relam is otto's fault, he wants to be king and not for his daughter or grand son but for himself..and I wouldn't doubt he would kill his own grand son to get to the throne..He needs to be burnt be a dragon and eaten by him ...I loved when the King walked in and otto the idiot moved off the iron thorne and the King line was great " I will sit on the throne, today " to otto.....the King is not as dumb as otto and his daughter think....karma will get them both, remember when alicent said she did not want to ride the dragon, put her on one and drop her in the river....off the steps with all the crabs feeding on her fleash.....

Was I the only one who noticed heleana smiling and looking genuinely happy that her father was well enough to be present. Like when he came into the court she was Smiling. It just makes it even more heartbreaking what the dance of the dragon is going to do to her in the future!

Daemon’s position was solidified in this episode for me. He made it known that he was a force to be reckoned with.
Matt Smith deserves an award his facial expressions spoke so much for him. From sadness, anticipation, frustration, and anger.

Seeing that scene of Viserys coming into the throne room and walking all the way to the iron throne by himself was so powerful, and a true display of strength. It was also very sad to see the crown fall off his head because it was an obvious display of his reign as King ending soon. However, it was nice to see that of all people it was Daemon who helped him pick it up and he who helped him sit on the iron throne one last time. In the earlier episodes he was seen as a pain in the ass to deal with for Viserys, but this was a nice last scene of Daemon showing respects to his older brother.
the most powerful scene in the episode this week, he showed respect and that he did love his brother and the King loved him...no matter what......
Daemon was actually always right, he was the better choice for heir, he was male perceived as “ strong “ ( not that sort of strong ) and he’d have married his niece to consolidate their claim , had this happened from the get go the crown would have been safe, and he knows it .
Just read that part where his crown fell off was an accident it wasn’t supposed to happen, but Paddy and Matt just kept going with it - that’s the take they used.

I agree with you about viserys. My mom passed away from lung cancer and she looked like he did (zombie like) right before she passed. I broke down crying seeing viserys! The make up was great but his acting sold it!!!!!!! If he doesnt get nominated im rioting!!

When Daemon helped his brother up the steps to the throne I cried. They may have their issues but there is truly love there.

You didn't mention a big point, I'm not sure if you missed it. The reason why Aemond got angry and made the "Strong" toast was because Lucerys laughed at him when the pig roast was sat before Aemond. This goes back to when Aegon and the Strong boys made a pig dragon for Aemond since he didn't have a dragon of his own.
That part during the Last Supper when Aemond was served the roast pig was a callback to the Pink Dread joke they played on him when they were kids.

@@damionmaxwell6227 No. Jaehareys did this by letting the lords take a vote. Rheanerya was far more loved in the realm than Rhenys was. She very well might have gotten it. Had they waited until he was old, Rheanerya CERTAINLY would have got it as Aegon was far more hated than her. He was a known rapist, kid snatching, dragon lord. Rheanyra was known as the realms delight.

Just finished the hotd episode and youre always the first youtuber out of all the breakdowns i watch (there is probably 6 different channels which are all great) for all the shows every single episode and i love it cause i live off people like you and ur breakdowns. Also interesting that Daemon spent an extra moment sniffing Viserys's cup when he first sees him with Rhaenyra. It seems as though something is off and Daemon can't necessarily place what it is.

Daemon picking up the crown and helping Viserys to the throne was all Matt Smith and Paddy improvisation. Paddy dropped the crown and Matt went to pick it up and they kept rolling as the two continued the scene how they thought it should be. Really well done by both actors to bring the most emotional part of the episode and maybe the season!
Where did you hear that? The camera angles seemed to be too “planned” for it to be a spontaneous improv.
@@Zarastro54 there's an interview/podcast on TH-cam that talks about. The crown wasn't meant to fall but when it did MS/Daemon picked it up and continued the scene. The producers/director liked it and kept it in. I'm sure they reshot the scene again afterwards tho to get the angles they wanted. They kept this scene and cut the speech Daemon was to give at the dinner
One thing I noticed that no seems to be bringing up, is how Jacaerys & Lucerys are sitting with their step-sisters/soon to be wives and both couples look happy and excited to be getting married, they even seemed excited when told about the marriage. Usually, people are unhappy with arranged marriages, especially to family, though they are pretty lucky.. that blood line is at least thinned out a wee bit.
They are all smitten on each other. Thus why they jumped to protect them and caused the whole eye thing. I think this might be something they veer off with greatly from the books, and a welcome change. Theyve been setting them up as flirty from the beginning when he held her hand at the funeral.
They have Targaryen blood. Of course they are happy to get the opportunity to marry their own family

It's creepy how much Aemond Looks like Daemon. Viserys really missed Daemon

This episode was so gut-wrenching seeing Vicerys. It is so incredibly difficult to see a loved one suffer and be unrecognizable. It reminded me of when my Papaw passed. What an episode.

I 100% think Viserys was being poisoned on and off and it’s by order of Otto working with trusted individual Measters. He was falling apart ready to die at any minute with Otto and Mr. Leeches as soon as they are gone he goes 10 years with minor complications, then Otto comes back and he goes right back into a spiral. But honestly i hope it’s never confirm led I love back ground stories.

Viserys was given milk of the poppy, it helped as painkiller, but as a side effect it also clouded his mind. No poison gives leprosy in that world.

From the first episode I thought the Hand was working with them to undermine the rulers.
Throughout the series so far I can't really say Otto seems like a manipulative force in Viserys' life. We see him give Viserys sound and reasonable advice (i.e betrothing Rhaenyra and Aegon), and overall trying to guide him well but not taking REAL advantage. All he has done works to better the realm or Viserys' goals and while others judge him for it and see him as a leech he is the only character so far to stand stalwart alongside the King. Daemon and Rhaenyra show little care for Viserys, come and go in his life at thier convinience in response to thier own actions while Otto give Viserys tools to bettter the realm and himself; his daughter in marriage to further block the claim of his disloyal brother, the harsh truth about Rhaenyra's actions and even this episode when he sees Viserys in pain he seems concerned rather than disgusted.
My grandfather is currently suffering from dementia and things are progressing quickly. This episode hit home. It was beautifully done and I can’t wait for next week.

I don’t think Alicent “misinterpreted” the whole thing that he wanted Aegon to be king. I think she needed another excuse cause let’s be honest, she knows this man is doped up on milk of the poppy and there were 2 Prince Aegons and multiple past Aegons that Viserys could’ve been referencing.
I think she so badly wants Aegon to be king she really didn’t need much to push her over. She knew he thought he was talking to Rhaenyra so what other context could he be talking to her about? She heard enough and she’s gonna run with it.

Paddy Considine's acting in this episode was truly phenomenal. I caught myself wincing in imagined pain whenever he was on camera. He really made me feel both his physical pain and his anguish at trying his best to hold his family together.
I don't understand how everyone can say that Alicent "misunderstood" Viserys in wanting Aegon to be King when he JUST when through all of this to ensure that he wouldn't in front of everyone. It's more like she only hears what she wants to hear and anything else does not exist. Pure delusion and grabbing for power through her clearly incompetent son.
The entire sequence when Viserys actually showed up was breathtaking. The music, everything. So many feelings conveyed without a single word.
Also with Daemon helping him up the steps and placing the crown on his head. beautiful.
that was an ad-libbed scene too, the crown wasnt meant to fall off, just goes to show the quality of the actors.
To me it sounds like Helaena says "Beware the beast beneath the boards." Could be referring to the rat maybe. They do show the rat inside the scale model Viserys has of the city earlier in the episode, right before Viserys is being treated for his wounds and tells Otto that he wants to have supper.
In an interview, Paddy says that as he gimped to the throne, he hunched over too far and the crown had fallen off accidentally. He and Matt Smith improv this scene and that is the cut they used in the episode, which looks great.
I was shocked when the king took his mask off and laughed when Aemond said Strong boys 😂

Watching Viserys collecting every last bit of energy left in his fragile body to have a last stand in order to secure his daughter's future was truly beautiful and heartbreaking. In adition to Daemon supporting Viserys while being visibly truly worried and sad for his dying brother despite their many past differences.

Demanding a trigger warning for a scene in a movie is a concept completely out of this world for some of us in second world countries. Like what does that even mean i had to look it up and i'm still confused.
i will not say ,HOTD is the greatest show I have ever seen as there are mamy great shows on different genre and topics which are also magnificent.But I must say, episode 8 of this show is the greatest episode I have ever seen . This episode had everything: Love,Hatred,Joy,tragedy,suspense,relief,Happiness,Sorrow, gut punching moments. It is a masterpiece ✨

Wow, ive never been on the brink of tears for a whole GOT episode. Bravo. Everyone having the unspoken mutual understanding to put aside differences for Viserys sake, letting him see his family together smiling and laughing for possibly the first and last time. Beautifully sad episode.

That stair down between Aemond and Daemon was chilling. Aemond is quickly becoming my favorite character. He’s the bad guy you sort of root for. Kinda like the joker in the Dark Knight.
Man I cried about every time seeing viserys this episode, he was a good man at heart, he loved his family more than anything and tried to help the realm the best he could.
He was definitely a good man and I didn't consider him weak at all.

The scene of King Viserys struggling his way to the throne reminded me also of Rhaenyra making the long walk all the way to Alicent despite having given birth only minutes before
The sound design is awesome. The quiet, barely audible Rains of Castemere as they show the serious decline of Vaserys made me 😢. The episodes keep getting better and better.
I love how the episode was a calm one compared to others signifying the calm before the storm and the dance of the dragons. And the name of the episode being "The Lord of the Tides" as tides signify calm water, again indicating the calm before the storm coming in the next episode.
You probably noticed but forgot to say. One of the strongs laughs at Aemond because of the big that was put in front of him. It’s a reference to the pink dread.

I love the detail about Viserys’ train set being abandoned and covered in cob webs, and the drapes resembling webs. I think it calls back to Alicent’s conversation with Cristen Cole where he called Rhaenyra a “spider who stings and sucks her prey dry.” I thought at the time that it was such projection, and I think this was a subtle pointer to the fact that it is Alicent who is the spider sucking the life from the king until he’s a dry decrepit walking corpse. Especially from the last episode when Alicent cuts Rhaenyra, I loved her line “Exhausting, wasn’t it? Hiding all this time under your cloak of righteousness” to really nail home how Alicent’s bitterness and jealousy and criticism of “indecency” is just her hiding from what she truly wants.
I believe it was in the “inside the episode” clip of episode 8 where they said they had Alicent hear the incoherent rambling from Viserys and misinterprets it as him saying he wants Aegon to be heir. They said now she has a reason where in the books she just wanted to seize power. But I hope they don’t rely on that and instead hone in on Alicent SAYING “it was Viserys’ last wish” when in reality she heard what she wanted to hear and is instead using it as an excuse to hide her desire for power again with a “righteous” motive.
Aemond is looking like a dangerous threat. The guy was not fazed by that right hook and has been training with ser Criston. The guy looks like a formidable swordsman.
