Finding and Fixing Leaks in a Small Sailboat

- In this video Casey and I use Butyl tape to seal up deck fittings to stop water from entering our ranger 23 sailboat. Butyl tape is some amazing stuff and is great to stop leaks, join along as we repair our ranger 23 to her former glory.

with leaks at the chain plates and windows, you should also check for rotted core wood. . with a small hammer lightly tap every inch of the deck. what your looking for is a change in tone to a dull thud. this area will indicate rotted wood core under the top fiberglass deck. this rotted wood needs to be replaced by either cutting and removing the top deck where the dull thuds were, or by cutting open the ceiling and replacing it from below. i purchased the same core material(3/8" balsa core) at my local fiberglass/boat repair supply store. i used thickened epoxt and pushe the core into it then epoxied the deck back over it. I had to do this with my Oday 26
I ended up getting a different boat, I never checked for rot. I am now the proud owner of a Compac 23!
As with the van....great update on the sailboat!! I'm sure it probably triples the time to do the work, by filming it, but it sure is nice to follow along!!
Surprising it isn't too bad to film stuff. I find that if I talk myself through it I kind of rethink what I am doing. Also it makes me want to put some effort into my projects. I will give you a heads up, I've got a big project that I have been working on that will drop next week. Also race day this Sunday!!!!

Man, I've always had terrible luck with that stuff lol. Seems like they only make money because of how good the commercials are.
@@LilBJessup I have never had good luck with it either I used it on my back window of my truck it started leaking in a few weeks
