That failure at High-Altitude Flight counted as a choice made so it moved you to a whole different mission, had you succeeded you would have been given a whole different one (which basically acts like a bonus round, use machineguns to blow away Enemy Air Drops before they hit the ground) Also had you taken out Z.O.E. at that last mission? You would have actually gotten 2 more missions, the first of these has an Alt Ending if you FAIL IT. (Taking out an enemy Submarine, it will fire a CRUISE MISSILE and you need to gun it down before it leaves the map, otherwise you get the bad ending) and the second is 'Fighter's Honor'.
Considering he mostly ignored secondary targets to begin with, I believe there was no Z.O.E. in his last mission at all, since it requires shooting down every previous one.
It's great to see someone new experience Ace Combat, while the first three games built the foundation of the franchise, the later games are why most people truly cherish it.
@ 27:39 lol Mr ace combat. That was pretty awesome. I remember playing rogue squadron 3 on GC on the "attack on the executer" bonus mission. Got down to my last life trying to take out the bridge on the executer (super star destroyer from return of the jedi) and just like the movie I got shot down on what should have been my final run. And my A wings corpse flew right into the bridge, blowing it up, finishing the mission... JUST LIKE THE MOVIE. Talk about a moment in need of a capture card. Anyway, I was there for your moment. Good job bro. Hope to see you jump in to AC4 at some point. Just curious, but by any chance have you ever played ninja gaiden black? Its a great game. Probably my all time favorite action game next to the 360 version of Ninja Gaiden 2 and the GoW 1&3
This franchise was a bliss, PS1 is neat beginning, especially when I play the game first time Ace Combat 3 with such a complex yet unique story in April this year than I dive into Holy Trinity and even PSP 2 games with some AC2 & AC3 soundtrack
I went to Armored Core series as Ace Combat fan. When i played my first game, Armored Core 6 i thought "wait, this is literally Ace combat but with... mechs?"
If you like Armored Core, check out Another Century's Episode, From Software's other mech franchise! The level design in those games are much closer to Ace Combat: ~30 minutes missions set in expansive maps with constantly changing objectives. The only caveat is that ACE has never been translated outside Japan, but it's very much playable with just a menu guide/on screen translator. Really, the only thing you would be missing is the crossover story, mashing dozens of robot shows together into one plot.
I've recently played AC3 Project Nemo and I can say that CRT Royale shader makes it so much better. It's highly configurable, so you can get really smooth and pleasant picture like it intended to be. For PS2 titles though CRT shaders are unnecessary in my opinion, upscaling and HD mods could be used instead.
Hey man, popped into the AC3 streams a few times. Great to see the video! Was wondering if you were planning on getting to ACX as well? It's a PSP title that came out shortly after Ace Combat Zero, and also currently the latest in the universe chronologically (not including 3). A lot of people tend to disregard it due to the platform it was released on but honestly to many who have played it can at times stand on par with the "holy trinity" (4, 5 and Zero), and if you liked the branching paths of 3 I'm sure you'll love the branching paths/strategy involved with ACX's campaign, even though it doesn't go nearly as heavy on the character writing.
26:24 "I'm honestly surprised by how long it took me to realise this" no offense, but I was not, considering from what I see it took you well into the second game to learn how to switch the targets and that at this point you haven't even managed to figure out how to dodge incoming missiles and evade ground fire effectively. Even when I've played it as a 10 y.o. with no analog gamepad and prior 3D gaming experience, I still have performed so much better and only learned that the game had endings other than Fortress Intolerance destruction only two decades later, because I had it in my first run and every subsequent ones. And I consider myself as a pretty average gamer at best.
@@upper_case_T it's not about the skill, it's about the gamer's curiosity. What options do I have? What those buttons do? What if I do this or that? Is it the game too hard or I'm doing something wrong? Can I avoid getting shot? Is there a way to land my hits more consistently? And so on. I wasn't particularly good at flying back then and online guides wasn't really a thing yet, on top of that I wasn't allowed to play for long, so I got to learn quick and figure out most effective strategies through trial and error. For instance, the first thing I realised is that going after the secondary targets first (when possible) is makes your progress faster and more efficient, since you not only eliminate the immediate threats (so you have to evade less, restart less, get less damage penalty), but also earn more points for better planes and possible failures, not to mention that it has eventually paid out in a form of a two extra missions and a true ending, because I've managed to discover and down every Z.O.E. plane (while also building up my skill gradually to take them on, thanks to the extensive target practice). It always boggles me to see when people rush into the game without exploring it's capabilities, sometimes it distorts their perception of an otherwise great games just because they make their experience unnecessarily harder or duller by skipping on what game has to actually offer. I'm in no way attacking you or bragging myself, but that's my fair impression on what I saw and my experience for comparison.
I really do appreciate you giving me some feedback and I will actually take some of that with me into AC4, but you also literally just said "no offence" and then continued to dunk on me because you didnt like how I played. I totally get some of the points you made, like not spending the time on getting to know each game and it's mechanics better, but you also need to keep in mind that this was a video meant to entertain. I've thoroughly cut down the already short playthroughs of each game. My attention is also heavily devided while I'm streaming, between reading chat Messages, learning the game and trying to entertain, There's a good chance that I'll miss stuff. Which is why I appreciate people like you helping me out in the comments. Also don't underestimate the ability of kids to quickly learn how to play a game, they will Always be ahead of adults in that aspect ;D Anyways, thanks for some of the Feedback. I already enjoyed these 3 games, even if I didn't get to experience all they have to offer. Really looking Forward to AC4, it looks like I'll enjoy it even more.
@@upper_case_T I'm sorry if you took it personal, I might have been too straightforward in my expressions, but I didn't meant to offend you or something - I did enjoyed your video, just decided to share my observations from the playthrough: you've stated clearly that you won't be digging into the games, but some particular things you've been missing or misinterpreting felt like a nails on a chalkboard, so I just couldn't help myself not to comment on this, sharing my own experience for a context. By the way, I can't recall you using some QOL features added in AC3, so I'll mention them just in case - free camera (right stick to rotate view) and, most importantly, lock-on camera (hold triangle to focus on your current target). The latter would be very handy in AC X (which lacks free camera). There's also missile camera (press circle to follow the fired missile), but that's just a gimmick. Also some tactical tips if you want: 1) You won't shake the missile by doing barrel roll (somewhat possible in AC3 due to different missile tracking, yet highly inconsistent), but sharp turns will do most times. Missiles are also displayed on the radar, so you can asses how much are incoming and from where exactly, so you won't accidentally turn into another missile. 2) Best time to double tap an enemy plane is either when you're merging head on with it or from the tail when it's changing the direction (e.g. first tried to evade left, but then starts to bank right - there is a good window to hit it while it's in the middle). Shooting planes from the any other direction is pointless (unless you're equipped with QAAM or SAAM). 3) Use airbrakes to reduce your turning radius, that will help a lot in the dogfights. Maybe I'll come up with some more, but I think it's fine for now.
Yeeeeeeah fighting giant aircraft in a plane purpose built to shoot at the ground maybe wasn’t a good plan. Just saying. Its ok I learned that lesson in AC7 my first Ace combat
Funny I picked up this franchise like a week ago after feeling unfulfilled with No Man's Sky starship combat. The PS2 era of the series is amazing, if the PSX games felt promising you won't be disappointed
Oh yeah I totally get what you mean, just played No Man's Sky for the first time in like 7 years and it's pretty underwhelming... And I'm really looking forward to the newer games now!
You should try Ace Combat X, it's pretty much on par with PS2 titles, asides from the obvious PSP limitations. Also don't miss on Project Wingman - the best non-Ace Combat Ace Combat game 😅
yeah a lot of people have recommended it as well, so I'll most definitely take a look at it. I also loved my PSP back in the day, so I'm already used to the jank that comes with it! (Monster Hunter on PSP was my childhood)
@@upper_case_T and don't listen people who would advice against playing Ace Combat Assault Horizon - yes, that's a controversial entry to put it mildly, but it's worth playing for that reason alone. I also assume that ACAH was one of the major reasons why Tom Clancy's HAWX series died, because when Ubisoft saw how Ace Combat series at its lowest managed to blow the best games they had to offer out of the water, suddenly breaking into what they thought was a their safe niche of "Call of Duty on the fighter jets" that Ace Combat will never step into, they probably thought it simply not worth it (especially considering both of their games performed not so great to begin with). But, fortunately, Ace Combat didn't went that way either, and after another controversial experiment of bringing the series into f2p live-service space (where they also tried to transition Stranegereal timeline into modern Earth setting), they decided to get back to the proven formula. I only hope the next entry will be not as safe and mild as AC7. I'd actually rather see them taking a break in the main series (which is somewhat in a dead end by me) making a reboot/remake (Crash/Spyro/Tony Hawk's style) of the PS1 Scarface dilogy, bringing more lore and story there together with modern QOL features. That also could be their chance to finally replace real iconic planes with their look-alikes (like Project Wingman did) in order to save money for actual development instead of licensing, make their games preservable indefinitely and allow more creative freedom to include as many planes in the game as they like (which today is more pressing issue than ever, because it's not like they will be able to get licenses for MiG and Su planes, thus depriving themselves of a solid chunk of their roster, not to mention the lore implications of their sudden disappearance). But I digress 😅 P.S. AC X2 is worth skipping though, unless you want to find out the real low of the series (without touching 2D portable spin-offs). It's story is completely isolated and gameplay has nothing to offer of what you won't see on other entries.
Even if you decided to stick to the main line games, I do recommend not to skip Ace Combat X - it's a fully-fledged AC experience with unique features, the only downsides would be a PSP hardware specific: clunky controls (could be reassigned in PPSSPP, but lack of second analog means no free camera), comparably low graphics (could be fixed to at least PS2 level with HD mods) and 30FPS limit (60FPS hacks exists, but they tend to break game physics, so I wouldn't advised). In my option, with a proper adjustments, it could've been released on PS2 and be a success (like GTA LCS and VCS did). P.S. I don't recommend to try AC X2 though, because that's not the main like game, set in a real world, with a significantly downgraded flight model, AI and even music (part of which was taken from other ACs and inserted randomly as a nostalgia bait). It's basically HAWX 2 Portable (which is not a compliment). If anyone thought AC Assault Horizon was bad, they didn't played this one apparently. P.P.S. and after you beat AC7, there's another secret Ace Combat game for you - Project Wingman. No spoilers, but if you get to know how it's been made, you'll understand, what I mean.
I agree that Ace Combat 3's ost is the weakest of the first 3. Its all atmosphere, which is fine, but it does make it feel like it lacks an "OOMPH" factor. Kind of like how Armored Core 6 kind of lacks that "oomph" factor too, given most of its OST is similarly atmosphere focused for the most part with a few exceptions here and there.
Funilly enough, if I remember correctly, this was also something I lamented when going from Armored Core 2 to Armored Core 3... So basically the same as in this series lol
