  • Kramzer and Joe are back for another thrilling episode of Good Music America!
On today's show, the discussion turns to the latest inductees of the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame. Are the Foo Fighters really a first-ballot HOF band? Our panel weighs in.
Genesis is touring for possibly the last time. Are you interested in going to see them? Are we?
Also, for what seems like the 10th consecutive show, the Weeknd is whining about not being nominated for a Grammy. Does anyone really care about the Grammys? Could it be that artists themselves care about the nominations?
Elon Musk and Grimes are a couple. Does that seem weird to anyone else?
Next week's artist could be one of two artists. Watch the video to find out who.
Finally, we review like a million new albums.
    JOE'S NEW MUSIC RATINGS:
Dirty Honey - Dirty Honey - 3.5 stars
Squid - Bright Green Field - 3.5 stars
Girl in Red - If I Could Make it Go Quiet - 3.5 stars
    Iceage - Seek Shelter - 4 stars
    Royal Blood - Typhoons - 4 stars
Tom Jones - Surrounded by Time - 3.5 stars
The Coral - Coral Island - 4 stars
    KRAMZER'S NEW MUSIC RATINGS:
    Royal Blood - Typhoons - 2.5 stars
Teenage Fanclub - Endless Arcade - 3 stars
    Cloud Nothings - Shadow I Remember - 3 stars
Vision Video - Inked in Red - 3.5 stars
    Iceage - Shelter - 4 stars
Alice Phoebe Lou - Glow - 4 stars

No reason to reach back that far for an example. There are bands from Foo's era that should be in before them, like the Pumpkins, Jane's, Ministry, Rage, Beck, AIC, Blur, Oasis, Pixies, STP, and so many more, an I like the Foos. There's just nothing great or game changing. Lots of time to get to the 90s bands, but let's at least start with the top tier and influential.

The Rush discography is a very rich one. I look forward to seeing what everyone has to say about it. You can divide their career into 4 quarters to make a whole. Heck, you can even divide the Rush catalogue into 8 parts. I'm partial to the 2112, Kings, Hemispheres period but it's always good to see people enjoying different periods of their career. Yes, even the ones I like the least! Cheers all.

Foo Fighters are kinda like the AC/DC of of the past ~30 years. Just very popular and easy to like for people who don't like heavy music. For that reason, I suppose they're "worthy" of this particular accolade. You know a lot of people were soon going to wonder why Foo Fighters hadn't yet been inducted, so the comity might as well act now.

I like Genesis, particularly the Gabriel era and the Collins era up to the 1983 self-titled album. I feel like the set list is going to contain a good third of material from 83 onward and focus on the popular songs that I don't love. It's not going to be weighted enough in what I consider the GREAT stuff for me. Plus, Phil is going to be sitting in a chair for most of the show. Past their prime and will play it up for the 80s pop crowd.

Only managed one recent release which was Fortitude by Gojira....not formed a complete opinion yet but I like it enough to say it's at least an 8/10 for starters on first listens...also a while back i got The Future Bites by Steven Wilson which has grown on me....was 8/10 and now an impressive 8.5/10....so it's a keeper....but I stand by my first thoughts which were with this album the amazing production gives it that impressive gloss....though ironically I think that's the point of the record in some ways.

It would be nice to see the Phil, Tony and Mike play in person for possibly the last and in my case only time, but after seeing The Musical Box and Steve Hackett’s Genesis Revisited band kick my ass I don’t have the need to hear the more pop era Genesis perform songs mostly drawn from the 80’s and 90’s like 3 or 4 keys lower. So I’ll probably pass but it is tempting. And yeah, Foo Fighters are more in the hall of “good” rather than “great” and definitely should not be anywhere near first ballot hall induction over King Crimson, Kate Bush and various others.
Definitely looking forward to Rush tomorrow. They’re one of only a couple bands I’ve done ranking videos for so far on my channel along with The Clash (I blame the start of baseball season and work tiring me out).

Kraftwerk's influence on other artists is very significant. They were game changers for many artists and set the templates for multiple genres. It doesn't take too much digging around to find articles on Kraftwerk's importance. Even easier is to listen to Autobahn, Radioactivity, Trans Europe Express, The Man-Machine and Computer World to hear how far ahead of the game they were in the 1970s. So many artists owe Kraftwerk for laying the groundwork for much of the music of the 80s and beyond. They sold a quite respectable amount of records in the US. To be so influential across genres their popularity amongst other musicians was, and still is, significant.

Looking forward to the next few weeks of listographys whatever order they happen in!
Both the Hall of Fame and the Grammys feel so irrelevant at this point. They never seem to hit the mark or have their finger on the pulse of anything. Really, what is the point? I don't know how anyone could argue Foo Fighters deserving a place over Iron Maiden or Kate Bush. It's totally illogical.
My favorite newer album right now is Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) by Kali Uchis. I love the vibe of it and how there are so many interesting sounds on it. There is even a song that reminds me of Portishead. I find myself listening to it often.

The rock and roll hall of fame is a rather odd beast it seemed to start relatively art and influence based and over the years transformed to a more openly commerce based stance on music.
I suppose it's not surprising I cant think of any awards type show that isn't driven by a huckster attitude, but then I don't believe most people care either.

I've been a Genesis fan for 35 years. They're my favourite band. But I don't want to see this potentially final tour because, well, it's not Genesis.
It's Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford accompanying a seated Gollum trying to sing songs he no longer has the voice to carry, while his son is on drums.
If they had Chester Thompson on the drums and somehow could get Gabriel and Hackett to show up for a few dates, it would make up for Collins' age and
    health problems. But they won't.
I love Phil as well. I just don't want to see him this way. This isn't the way I want to remember him.

Listened to a lot of new albums in the past weeks:
I was highly anticipating the 'Squid' album and I was not disappointed. It's a 5 star album for me, no doubt. Hard to beat this one for 'Album of the Year,' but we will see.
I really liked the new 'Royal Blood' album. I gave it 4 stars. Their first really consistent album imo. I also like the danceability of the album.
Also, I listened to the new St. Vincent album 'Daddy's Home'. Not that excited about it, but it has some cool stuff on it. That Pink Floyd-esque song 'Live in the Dream' is amazing. I'd give it 3 Stars at the moment.
3 Stars for 'Iceage' with 'Seek Shelter'.
I also tried out the 'Vision Video' album, especially because Darkwave/80s Electronic Dance stuff is probably my favorite genre at the moment, but I didn't really like it. I agree with Kramzer that they seem to be the Greta van Fleet of this genre. Interestingly I don't really mind GVF, but this one bugs me. Weak 2 Stars at the moment.

Squid! - The moment he opened his mouth I was thinking "Mark E. While it is all "old sources" (I could list another handful right away), their plus is that they really make it their own and fill it up with a lot of energy - which makes it a really good album...at least 4 stars, this is one that may grow over the next months...

@@TastesLikeMusic Wow. If it was a different album, I'd definitely say go with the original but all they did was improve the sound. Or is that a remaster? They're calling the 2013 version "remixed." What's the difference between a remaster and a remix Jason?

    • @TastesLikeMusic
      @TastesLikeMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Remixing involves taking all of the original tracks on the tape and, well...remixing them. Meaning each individual instrument could potentially have different EQ, compression, relative volume, etc.
Mastering takes finished mixes and applies more subtle EQ and compression across them. This is done to make sure there aren’t any major differences going from song to song, put a little finishing sparkle on the mixes, and prepares it for radio.
Remastering is usually pretty subtle. A change to the loudness and EQ across the entire album is usually what you’ll notice while a remix could be extremely drastic, going even as far as subtracting entire instruments in some cases.-Jason

    • @179rich
      @179rich 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@TastesLikeMusic Thanks Jason. I still don't understand why you would go with the original which has been heavily criticized for brickwalling, distortion, etc. I have read so many people claim the old mix is unlistenable, painful, etc. and I would hate to see the album downrated for that when there's a much better mix available. On the other hand, the OG is what everyone heard for over 10 years. But I'm going with the remix. That's what I listened to and I have no interest in going back and reviewing an inferior version of the album.
