      kozhi mutta the problem is that so many people either a - don't think of/acknowledge death or b - understand about death but fear it. More people need to not fear death but know that some day they are going to die. If they accept this then they'll stop living by the rest of societies ideas of how to live their life and start living life the way they want to. They'll quit their jobs, go off the grid and start the path of living things out their own way. They won't even go by the systems set of laws (possibly only living by their own code scrapping essentially every other law provided to them). It's a matrix, this "reality" is a human reality, it only has the value that the consensus puts into it. If in hypothetical, the consensus rejected the laws and limitations of reality with wanton nihilistic abandon then reality would be thrown into a nihilistic tangent.

      Honestly I think that those philosophies are far less scary than say physicalism (the belief that all things are physical). Mainly because I look at the implications of the philosophies in question.
      Physicalism implies Nihilism or Cosmicism, but physicalism provides no grounds for objective moral values which one could at least argue under cosmicism. Physicalism also makes quantum mechanics far stranger than any other philosophy does, most interpretations of Quantum Mechanics place some emphasis on the observer but Physicalism rejects this. Before you ask, no decoherence does not solve the measurement problem in QM it simply provides a basis that you still need a interpretation to make use of. If it did there would be little need for different interpretations. That means the measurement problem somehow doesn't exist or resolves itself independent of observation, yet numerous experiments show this to be impossible. The only interpretation one could hold onto (that is unfalsifiable) would be Many-worlds, but that raises so many logical problems that it is hard to take it seriously.
      Physicalism is to me far scarier than all of the other philosophies mentioned because it is a factor in most of them. On top of that it calls into question our cognitive faculties, because if Physicalism is true then consciousness is the result of evolution. If it is the result of evolution then our perceptions of reality are based on what is most beneficial to our survival, not what is true. Which then calls into question how do we know anything is true? How do we know the rules of logic are true? How would we know physicalism to be true?

    • @eosapienrancher4045
      @eosapienrancher4045 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Sad Scientist Hououin Kyouma I don't see what's so scary about that. I've long made peace with the limitations of human reason and perception, and my personal theory of morality isn't realist anyhow, at least not in the conventional sense, and can handle (in fact, it presumes) materialism.
      If physicalism is true, then when we die, the physical substrate of our consciousness breaks down and our existence as subjective beings dissipates. No afterlife, no fear of eternal torture or the unknown in general. Maybe it's because of my specific upbringing, but for me the only scary part of death is not knowing what comes after, and the idea that everything is physical and death is truly the end of personhood is an extremely comforting notion. There's no possibility more terrifying than the idea of eternal existence, especially in an unknown, presumably non-physical, state. All existential concerns sort of pale in comparison to the spiritual terrorism that is the dogma of immortality.

    Here's a terrifying philosophy. Its the belief of reincarnation into all beings capable of awareness that have ever existed. That there is only one mind, one soul, suffering all fates.
    It is the belief of a near eternity of both the absolute joys and pleasures life has to offer and also the absolute brutalities and depravities it is capable of inflicting.
    The worst fates are the ones reserved for beings cursed with both imagination and ingenuity for even been eaten alive from the feet up would be a comparative mercy to the worst potential machinations of an intelligent mind with opposable thumbs.
    In the end it doesn't matter what life comes next though because all lives will come eventually. Even death has no mercy in this reality. Only in the oblivion of a dead universe without life would we ever truly be at peace.

      As far as Sartrean Existentialism, I don't think finding any subjective meaning to life would work for me, as long as it's objectively meaningful, by that I just mean I can't pick myself a hobby or a cult something, and call it the ultimate meaning and purpose of my life.
      So as long as I don't know the truth, I'd rather die without having any meaning and purpose, and it is beautiful in its own way, when there is no meaning life is a play, a dance, a musical number, there are no goals.

      @@comradezvezda I went through a existential phase in my late teens, and in my experience it wasn't me thinking I was smart for realizing life in meaningless, it was me coping with the fact that life has no meaning. I was raised Christian but denounced it in high school at some point and it took a few years to really process that there's no purpose, no path, and no one is watching over you. It was a lonely time in my life, I felt utterly alone even in company. At some point it was freeing knowing that it was all up to me and only me, but I was truly depressed for a few years and that was something that was partially fueling it in the back of my mind. I really do think if someone won't shut up about nihilism or the meaninglessness of life, they likely just need some help, but that was just my experience.

    All those philosophies can be terrifying indeed, but I dont feel spook. You can be overwhelmed and feel like you can't control anything... Or you can just be grateful to be desillunionnal enough to get those concepts, and accept them. All the "bad" sides of living are what makes it fun and worth.
    I tell these to all nihilistic persons : yeah, the universe is big and all, and we don't know much about the consciousness, but our awareness allow us to find ways to be happy despite the worst odds.
    Find meaningful goals and stick to it. Take care of yourself and others.
