    In this video:
In 1887, Doyle published the novel “A Study in Scarlet.” It was the first work to star Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. It was also the first record of a magnifying glass being used as a tool of investigation. “A Study in Scarlet” didn’t attract much attention (and neither did its sequel, “The Sign of Four.”) but in the July 1891 issue of “The Strand Magazine”, Doyle published the first short story starring Holmes. That’s when the detective began to take off in popularity. Even early on, readers wanted to know who was the basis for this new type of crime fighter. Doyle couldn’t have just conceived this eccentric, brilliant, logical character out of thin air, right? After more than a century since Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance on paper, evidence points to Holmes being based on primarily two individuals, as well as, perhaps, the author himself.

  • @joebykaeby

Another bonus fact: Despite the fact that the phrase has become famous, Sherlock Holmes doesn't use deductive reasoning. The process of reasoning from an observation to the most likely cause is called abductive reasoning, also know as "inference to the best explanation." In deductive reasoning, the only possible conclusion is one that necessarily follows from the evidence - which would mean that the answer to the mystery would be so clear to anyone able to follow logic that a detective like Holmes wouldn't be needed.

    I OBJECT
sherlock holmes was inspired by Edgar Allen Poe's Dupin from the 1841 short story "The Murders of the Rue Morgue". The portrayal of Doyle''s professor's deduction skills is identical in method to that of Poe's detective. That is wayyyy too much of a coincidence to ignore, especially given that Poe's work predates Doyle's. Of course Poe had his influences as well, but The Murders of the Rue Morgue arguably created the detective genre, and so it is impossible to deny the story and Poe's influence on Doyle.

Fine video about Holmes, Doyle, ..., and you're funny with your sponsor ads or promotions. I perhaps would benefit from cutting my head hair but have only trimmed it (very infrequently) for many years now, for I'm not coordinated enough to be able to give myself a nice hair cut, as some people sometimes are very capable of doing for themselves, and I'm not interested in paying 15 $ CAD (plus tip) for a cut that'll take no more than 5 to max. 10 minutes. Also, I wouldn't want to thoroughly shave my head. This is Canada and it can get quite cold here some periods of winter, so some hair adds to the protection provided by tuques. :) As for the beard, I just trim it a little once in a while, though much more often than my head hair; beard being facial hair, vs head hair being on the tops of our heads. The beard does help during winter months. I's very, very seldom that a scarf (as nice as some are) is needed over the face, so this makes the bearded part a "little handy". The only bald people I've noticed around where I reside are like truly bald, rather than people who just cut their head hair so short that they can look bald, depending on distance. You're not truly bald, for if you were, then you surely wouldn't need to shave your scalp, so you're just preferring to have your hair this short, which, of course, is surely convenient when bathing or showering, for the little hair you have remaining will dry in ... what, 2 or 3 minutes; as opposed to a person with long hair needing to wait, ... what, an hour or more, for the hair to dry naturally, that is. But you live in the UK somewhere, maybe England, and the winter climate surely is normally milder than it is here. Cheater, cheater, ...! "Shame on you" for living in a milder climate. :) It must be convenient to have such short hair for another reason that now comes to mind. You surely are protected from head lice, or whatever those nasty pest insects are called. I never got anything of the kind but have heard of the problem sometimes occuring in the USA as well as Canada. Dr. Bronner's Peppermint soap, a concentrated liquid herbal soap, however, can surely get rid of head lice, as well as working against "crabs" people sometimes get in pubic hairs from use of ... well, infested toilets, f.e. Gotta be very careful with that soap though, for it's very strong and needs to be diluted in order to avoid burning yourself, for it's a STRONG disinfectant (organically herbal but very strong), and with one bottle, it can be made into several properly diluted bottles of equal size/volume. He also has other excellent organic soaps, Castille, Lavender (wonderful body wash), Rose, Sandalwood and surely others, all, from my experience, directly usable, unlike his peppermint soap (packs a punch, to say the least). www.drbronner.com It's sold in stores in the US and Canada, but possibly also elsewhere, and you get real value for your $'s.

He is one of that select group of Scottish murder trial defendants (like Madeleine Smith) found, "Not Proven" by the jury, that middle verdict based on measuring the evidence as to whether it is beyond a shadow of a doubt - it is usually of such a middle point range it is called, "You're not guilty, but don't do it again!!" Most commentators (like the later mentioned William Roughead) feel Monson was definitely guilty.

Okay so like, can Daven make a video on why 4 hours of sleep makes me function better than 5 hours of sleep? Because I've noticed that if I get 4 hours of sleep, that it's sufficient and I can function almost as well as if I had gotten a standard 7 1/2. I wake up well rested and ready to get up and do stuff. But if I go over 4 hours but under 7, I feel like I only got like 5 minutes of sleep. Shouldn't more sleep be better? I don't get it. And also, if I sleep more than 8 hours I feel almost the same, like I didn't get enough sleep. I got more than enough, can I just not bank sleep hours? Lol. But please, no offense Simon (I love you and all, but I love Daven just a teeny bit more), please have Daven present the video? Oh that would make my world! I'd be so happy :)

And while all of you have spotted the physics/physician graphic thing, none of you have drawn the conclusion that it is the result of a non-native english speaking editor mis-hearing what Simon said (& then no one picking it up during any quality control review). Or it could just be a simple garden variety cock up.

Sherlock Holmes was a real person. His real name is revealed in the last Holmes story written by Doyle. His Last Bow is the story. But, you have to read it carefully because Doyle puts your own deductive skills to work. Doyle was infuenced by Bell but his stories were based on his own experiences and his chronicles of the real detective. All of Doyle's stories are set in the 19th century but inspired real law enforcement of the 20th century to use Holmes'/ Doyle's methods to solve crimes. Fingerprints are just one thing the Holmes stories used as a way to find a killer. Bell and Doyle both named the suspect in the Ripper killings but Scotland Yard and higher-ups in the Monarchy never revealed who it was. Numerous movies have been made about Holmes stalking the Ripper. A Study In Terror is one and one starring Christopher Plumner is another. It was called Murder By Decree.
