These fields benefit a lot from our stupid consumption whether you believe it or not.
How do you think NASA gets funded? Through taxes. How do government get taxes? Through our production. Why do we produce so much? Because the demand is there.

Man, I'm currently reading this book. Just going across Google's chapter. I have to say: this is one of the significant books I have ever read! I'm also trying to quit social media and this books highly encourages me to do so.

We humans tend to project human traits on non human entities. We like to believe that a company has an conscience, empathy or anything like that. In fact, a company is a machine that optimizes any process. Eg evading taxes, producing where labor laws are not as strict, etc. COMPANYS ARE NOT HUMANS, NOT OUR FRIENDS OR EVEN AN AQUAINTANCE. There just a lifeless entity.
Agreed. They are a fiction created by laws that were created by humans. In response, government - which is also not human - should produce effective regulations (also not human) to get companies to comply.

BAM! Scott is an articulate, effective, powerful, fearless, thought leader. And he’s right! I gave up Social Media and stopped watching cable news in 2015… The shift in my life was dramatically significant… I am definitely happier than most people in my orbit.

i'm dissapointed in the lack of acknowledge he got from the host and the audience. is it just me who thinks this sounded so absolutely fucking clear? and that the miscomunication led to them letting their emotions get in the way of their logic. like the host. he mentioned how he was very close with people who work in those companies, and that theyre not bad people. and theyre doing really cool things. but Scott was talking about the company as a whole and their economic effect, lack of economical responsibility and possibly hidden agendas.

It hits too close to home. Most of the people in that audience have an iPhone in their pocket, which they only bought because it's a status symbol. It's very hard for people to admit that they themselves are part of the problem.
I think the point of the host is he was playing devil's advocate for conversation sake.

This was awesome, I'd say even the best TED talk I've seen so far.
I have to admit, I've also been caught up in the "Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google emotional appeal." They've done a great job branding themselves. I am more likely to support less regulation and less government influence in those companies than with other for-profit companies. I think that's changing now, though, because they've established themselves and the innovation has leveled off.
In the beginning, they were a completely new thing, but now they aren't and they should be treated like any other company. Special consideration should be given to companies that are new and innovative so they can build themselves into a position where they can begin to pay back what has been given to them. Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google are at that point now.

It shows how powerful these companies really are; they've manipulated so much of the population to believe they are for the Greater Good that they don't even need to repress criticism of themselves.

That's The Difference
The blame rests with the consumer. Consumers repeatedly fail to exercise their power in the marketplace. You get manipulated because you allow yourself to be. The same goes for politics. We can blame systems all we want, but all that does is deflect and try to shift away the responsibility from where it really exists. It's easier to find a scapegoat and blame the boogeymen, or some conspiracy, than it is to look in the mirror and examine yourself and your own choices. The systems are not some abstract that ideologues would lead you to believe. Systems are people. The systems don't function without your input.
Data is one of the most valuable commodities of the modern age, why are we giving it away for free? People are the commodity and we are basically giving away the farm for nothing in exchange. An illusion, a psychological hit, that like any other drug, always leaves you coming back for more. That's all you really get. The entities amass billions and you are left with nothing that has physical, tangible, buying power in the marketplace. You can't go to the store and try to trade all those likes you got on social media for some products. But the data these entities harvested from you while you use their services definitely resulted in pure capital for them.
The "free" services you are being offered, by various social media and related platforms is in no way properly compensating you for the data you give them in return. And it's this data that has given these entities the power to become as powerful as they are.
As long as consumers passively engage without pushing back when it's obvious you're being used, nothing will change.
The various web platforms and social media are tools, very useful tools, that can be used to enhance our lives. But the less engaged we are, and the more passively we use them, the more they are being manipulated towards goals that are not in our best interests. These platforms undergo continuous changes and shifts that do not consult the user. If the people are the primary commodity, or product, than they should share in the design and forward goals of these mediums, and ultimately, the profits.
It definitely isn't working that way right now, but that's only because the users of these mediums allow it. If they keep shifting these platforms in ways that abuse you, yet you continue to use them, then you only have yourself to blame.
Can you really blame consumers in a monopolistic/oligopolistic system? That's what Scott's getting at
We are are surrounded by a population of mostly materialistic idiots. They are also content with being that way? Did commerce/capitalism stoke this fire of idiocy and/or cause it?
The guy asking the questions at the end wants to argue him down, and yet we really need to consider his talk and points way more and say thank you.

absolutely loved it! Scott is a fantastic communicator and, despite his obnoxious attitude, is someone who actually cares for the community and the greater good. TED boss, Chris Anderson, rarely makes appearance in talks but he did this time since he wanted to kind of save face after a 17 minutes nonstop rants! One of TED’s best for me!
Thank you so much for making this video avialable to common people. I thank Mr. Scott Galloway for this wonderful mindset shift he has created and as a business owner what are our resposibilities and systems to create in future for a wonderful world to be created, since we all (Us and our coming generations[Eg.Kids] ) are going to live in this future world of our's, we need to make it happen. The interview at the end isn't really worth watching because the host completely misses the point and his questions are just frustrating, making Galloway repeat himself.
The fact that he had to repeat the message is clearly laying out his intention and focus of the talk,
and a host bowing out blindly to what the speaker has exposed would only make his credibility more shallow.
It's not like anyone will read this message, but the stance the Q&A man did was indeed necessary, and fair by all means.
That host is the founder of TED too, lost a lot of respect for him and clear bias to defend the guys who fill his pockets (FB/G)

I will say this because of the video, it will make you think and want to say something. With great power comes great responsibility. Money is not everything, and love for humanity needs to find its balance back into all people. I am a firm believer in if you work hard, you will go places. We cannot blame those who took their stand in these areas for their actions. We all as a whole have been taught these mindsets and principles and have forgotten the most cherishable ones of all. Love for each other. This video should make you see the future holds a lot of AI job positions, leaving millions upon millions of people won't need to be hired. With this, these companies surely have the lead, influence, and power to help change, shape, and direct these new jobs. If they do not, they will no longer have jobs of their own because nobody will have the money to pay for their items. But we also have the power in choosing to help promote them on or demand for changes necessary to help us all move forward. If nobody takes a stand or makes any changes, the effect will be too much-damaged economy for anyone to truly fix, for the chaotic mess alone will be merely impossible to measure or control. Perhaps you do not see my point, but connect the puzzle pieces and you see if we do not come together to help one another, the primary survival mode we have been taught will kick in, 'Survival of the fittest'

Usually I try to get into a Ted Talk, get really bored and go away..but this guy gets it. "People need to believe in a super being - whether that's god, super heroes, playboys, celebrities, or other giant entities." Beautiful way to start a conversation and enlightening because I've never thought about it.

I feel like Chris Anderson's intervention brought nothing to the table. He had something in mind, clearly, but did not express himself well. I don't know if he honestly couldn't formulate it well, or didn't have his thoughts in order, or if he was lightly trying to persuade Scott to change his narrative.
It completely contradicted SG's argument, so it was pointless of him to make those questions. I honestly don't think Jeff Bozo is "horrified that some things happened the way they did". How are you purchasing several companies, reducing competition, making huge job cuts and waking up horrified because things happened that way? What Scott is saying is that power corrupts people. No one should control that much and the people who are in charge of making checks are not doing their job correctly. I'm glad he stood his ground.
I think Anderson's comments felt like a common spectator's and not like the TED's CEO.
And honestly, "spectacular rant"? wtf
It would be very interesting to see silicon valley elites counter argue this...I'll get the popcorn! Lol
Thank you Scott. The points you made have helped me find some more solidity in several beliefs that I hold dear.
I really enjoyed the fact that there is an opening FOR Q&A however Chris seemed to cherry pick Scott's answers in an effort to push his opinion instead of delving deeper into the meaning of the presentation.

14:32 Loved his conclusion. The whole problem of these gigantic companies is that they don't actually generate any value that improve people's lives (it's not on their main projects at least). It's just ads and webpages, and they end up influencing many others to pursue the same. I find it very sad when I see smart people and whole companies and startup's entirely dedicated to developing webplatforms/apps because it's just easier and profitable.

Scott you put your case very well. The problem is that the legislators just wont take on the Giants. There is a long list of reason why and they will eventually gobble everthing.
Can anyone find provide some references for his statement that the number of people a person loves is the most important predictor of making it to over 100?
And his statement that: “Children with poor nutrition but a lot of affection have better outcomes than children with good nutrition and poor affection.”

This guy was brilliant, host not so much. The question isn't if they're bad people, most of them are not, at least not the employees, not going to defend the people on top because they know what they're doing and refuse to change despite having the power. The question is how has it become this way. And the answer is a broken system. During the era of enlightenment we where doing great things, not just in industrialisation, but developing philosophy and art and new ideas all over the place. Then came the World Wars and disrupted all that, and the focus became solely on the industrialisation part, the pure logic part that would help us win. And then came the cold war that continued this and developed the free market propaganda as a counter measure to communist propaganda. And our parents, not having the internet, bought all this hook line and sinker. And we're now left with a world where every single person is trained to worship money and care about nothing else, to treat corporations like gods, to measure ourselves by the brand name we carry, by our bank accounts. And all that other great stuff from the era of enlightenment, that's all gone. Nobody today cares about what it really means to be a great person, a great person is a person with a lot of money, no need for philosophy, or even basic good manners. Obviously this will create a fully corrupt society, because it's easy to make money and become great person by embracing greed and selfishness, values don't make a profit after all. This guy is 100% right, this money religion needs to die before we do, and we will if we let this continue. The money these companies have could end world hunger for good, we have to ask ourselves why they don't and instead waste their time on trying to brainwash us into buying junk we don't need?
Great talk. His voice needs to be heard.
