    Hey everyone and welcome back to another restoration! In today's video I am restoring a 1956 Tonka Side Dump Truck with a snow plow. I bought this truck as a box of loose parts without the plow and plow frame. Fortunately I was able to find another original plow and purchase a reproduction plow frame. This was a challenge for sure. I've never worked on a tonka body with so many parts! Enjoy!

    I had a three piece set of these. This truck, and then a tandem dump truck and a road grader. Wore holes in my pants playing in dirt. Thanks for sharing.

    Beautiful job as always. I would have tried to leave the snowplow blade with its original worn look, because that is how they usually look in real life. I get it, this was a full restore. You had to do it right. It is very nice, but the only place you ever see a shiny nice snow plow is at the tractor dealership.

    I had one just like this years ago. Modded it to be a full suspension realistic proportion drive train with some Tamiya parts. I think i still have it somewhere in my attic. Memory flashback nostalgia hit. :))

    I understand that Tonka has used the chrome wheel covers since their beginning, but does anyone prefer just the black wheels on some of the work trucks? Just curious if I'm the only one...

    • @joe_diy
      @joe_diy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like them too. And white steel wheels on commercial trucks. I've done a few with white ones.

    That looks like some little boy gave that truck plenty of sand box time, dreaming of the day he could "drive the big one." That was a pretty complex bed, more engineering in that than could be expected in todays toys.

    After seeing all the extra parts and assembly labor I can see why I never got one as a kid. Brautiful job, beautiful truck. Looks so much like the Minnesota Highway Department (pre MNDOT) snowplows of the era.

    Really nice resto. Do you heat your retainer tabs so they don't break off when bending back over?

    • @joe_diy
      @joe_diy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, just bend them. They tend to weaken so you really don't want to have to rebend them once they're rebent.

    I've wondered through many of your videos why you don't strip the paint before sandblasting. The old paint only contaminates the substrate in your machine and slow down the process...

  • @Toystorations
    @Toystorations 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tonka didn't make the plow until 1957, which probably explains why it was missing from this one when you got it. Looks good, regardless though.
