  • Nitro engines used to be the only source of power for RC planes and helicopters -- in the days before electric motors became as powerful as they are now. This video offers newcomers to the hobby, a raft of information about nitro engines, how they work and what to consider if you're thinking of powering an RC plane with one.

I already knew most of the information that you spoke of in your video, but all of that knowledge that I have came from years of experience that were either frustrating, expensive, or both. Most important maintenance of a nitro engine is the after run of a nitro engine. The methanol corrodes the alloy but the Nitro attacks the alloy, when this happens the nitro "Pitts" the alloy leaving tiny pin sharp shards. These shards break off under combustion and score the sleeve, and also, finds its way into the bearings or bushings whatever the case me be. After a days running I unplug the models fuel line from the carburetor. I have a seperate fuel tank with 100% methanol, and I run the 100% methanol for about a minute to burn out the nitro from the engine. One thing to know is when switching from nitro of any content to 100% methanol, the engine will run lean for a 20 to 30 seconds than fall off high idle when all the nitro is burned out of the engine and then run at a more respectable idle. I use my finger much like a throttle exhaust to limit the rpm by placing my finger over the tuned pipes stinger and blip the pipe to keep the rpm's down until the nitro is completely burnt out of the engine. After the nitro burn out I use Marvels Mystery Oil as a after run lube. Ten years on an engine and the internals are like brand new with no ugly darkening. It is what it is.

When I first started flying in the 80's one off the more experienced guys turned up with a big pattern ship which had a pipe on it. I have to say that when he screwed the main in and it came on the pipe I legged it to a very safe distance. It was absolutely terrifying and exciting all in one go.

I've found so many cool things about nitro engines recently (and learnt a lot a bout combustion on the side) that It really makes me want to build an old-school trainer, use all the cool radios and servos we have now and fly high alpha like I used to do with my dad's planes. But now that you mention tuned pipes man that opens a whole new world of cool ideas I didn't know how much power they could add.
Also there is quite a few smaller gas engines now, and I'm sure with some fuel additives they can get to close to the power to weight ratios of glow engines, without the mess.

Wot ho Bruce, Just watched four years late, my ASP 52 ABC motor has quite a large muffler, inside of this there is a multi holed baffle, not only dose the make this engine very quite, it’s fuel efficient because of the pulse made inside of this muffler helping to push the unburnt fuel from exiting or some such waffle. Way back in 62 my first motorbike was a 125 BSA Bantam, the carb had a strangler which was also had a choke leaver that cut off the air, inside this strangler was some wire wool this caught the fuel which was blown back by the engine, the wire wool caught this fuel and was reused.. it was a gutless thing. Still Ride motorbikes and on the odd occasion let other fly my plane I’ve build, over the years I had a few goes at flying RC not good I leave this to others with more skill. I prefer making free flight. Nice to see your still flying, although I did enjoy when you made the models..

I've flown for over 20 years and then was out of the hobby for 15 what I've started seeing since coming back is it used to be when everyone flew glow or gas you could get a kind of sense where the other guy in the air is from the noise of his engine, but when I fly with my glow and someone has an electric I have no idea where they are until almost I'm right next to them when they are in sight of my plane. As a matter of fact at my air field I have seen 2 accidents where a Glo plane has cut an electric foamy in half because the glow plane was doing a flyby down the runway and the electric was doing some 3d stuff. I honestly think if the electric made noise or if it was an internal combustion engine that the glow guy would have had a sense where the other plane was and would have missed him.

I got my first cut in the finger when I was 9 :) After several cuts, I mostly resorted to starting-motors wich also are gently to wooden propellers unlike "chicken-sticks", even if padded with a soft hose out of rubber or plastic :) Chicken-sticks tends to loosen thin sections on the trailing edge of wooden propellers, not good.
A hard propeller back-stroke on the finger in -10°C is quite remeberable, so an electrical starter is the way to go, at least for the larger engines.
I start smaller engines with a chicken-stick wich is made out of a hard wood dowel with a garden-hose like hose on the outside, to protect the fiber-glass propeller. The whole thing is about 23 mm outside diameter and 200 mm long. Very effective.
Reason is that this smaller engine does not have a propeller-spinner for engagement of the electrical starter, for traditional reasons. However, I use a cheap O-ring in front of the propeller-nut, to hold the nut in place, in case of back-firing. Also very effective.
A benefit of Nitro or internal-combustion engines is that you can fly twenty-five or way more flying sessions on a beatiful day. Allmost impossibly with electrical power. Now you might learn how to land straight and good, with a beatiful three-point landing after many hours of training.
I think it is very fun to do a gently touch-down on the tail-wheel first. No nose-over :) Of cource the elevator-deflection is at maximum (+/-30°), center of gravity at the most rearward allowable position, and I am using strictly linear coupling between the stick-control and the elevator / rudder / aileron, also with helicopters as well.

I still run mostly nitro for the exact reason you mentioned last...fill it right back up, and you're back in the air. I love foam edf's, but other than that, nitro or spark/gasoline for me.

My Old MERCO 61 Marine would only run about 9-10,000 rpml, but had a ton of torque for running large props. (HUGH FLYWHEEL)... I ran a water jet on a large heavy "Tug"lllllllll'..... very reliable. Mainly in the off season (winter)
Cheap OS Max .21/.35's and .0.40's with bushings not bearings. throw aways, lols........

    Oh Dear, nostalgia!
Well, you forgot to mention that those engines were very expensive at the time. I just read the magazines over and over, but never was able to purchase one...
The really hard core engines, were the star configurations you would find in some WWI type aircraft models.

Hi Bruce, good to see the old glow engines out. I have some old engines that my father gave me. One has never been used and the others haven't been used for 25-30 years. As you would guess they no longer turn over. I would love to see you do a video on how to free up and clean one of these engines bringing to back to life. Cheers.

      My experience:
Remove the engine head and carb and dismantle as much as possible without doing damage to stuck parts. Throw everything into a bucket and submerge in nitro fuel. After 2-4 days things should start to move. Dismantle and clean the entire engine. The two engines I have fixed have both ran awesome after this cleaning method.

A great walk down memory lane Bruce. I still have some of these motors but haven't used them for years :) Regards, Pete

Awesome Thanks for sharing Would be great to have a video on how to tune the engine. Also does the nitro engine need breaking? Thanks

What about the good old power panels. You can use a 12v battery to power the panel which then provides power to the glow plug and also provides power for your electric starter. I still love my nitro engines, I can't bring myself to part with them. YES PLEASE, do a nitro build video. It's been ages since I flew nitro, would love to see what has changed

This is so interesting Bruce! I never realized it was the reaction twixt fuel and platinum that ensured continued combustion.
    Thanks for the education. 👍🏾🙂

I love the smell, sound and smoke of those engines, but totally hate the after flying part on airplanes which is cleaning the thick oil covering the whole airplane on the side of the exiting exhaust pipe :).
But they definitely make way more fun than electric, sadly glow fuel is too expensive here so I wish I had was a large 3D airplane with a proper nice racing petrol engine in it...

I love the idea of an actual "gas" powered rc car. The only thing I dont like about nitro cars is the sound because when I think of a 2 stroke engine, I always think of that gnarly 2 stroke ping from like a dirt bike.

Concerning glow plugs, my experience tells me to use a hot plug at elevations like Bogotá, 2650 meters above sea level. Normal or cold plugs at sea level. It also depends on the amount of Nitro Methane in the fuel.

I have a nitro 2 stroke I got for free. Might be time to plan for a build with it! Maybe out of foam tho...cause I’m still pretty lazy

Hi Bruce. Great video and review of nitro motors, I still have my nitro engines now I just need to find a balsa kit to build. Now everything is foam and RTF electric. I miss building a new plane in the winter months. Thanks for sharing your experience with nitro.
