Enchanted vs. The Little Mermaid (comparisons)

I've been wanting to do this for a long time, and these past two weeks I've had some spare time, and decided to spend it on this simple video.
Before anyone starts getting into me saying that these aren't references, then I'll clarify: Kevin Lima (director) has said himself that every detail in "Enchanted" is a reference to past Disney animation. These are most of the ones that I found (the ones not listed in articles but featured in this video were all found by me!)
Some additional explanation:
3) At first, I thought that Edward swings Giselle around three times in reference to the three times it's been used in a Disney movie (TLM, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin)- but then I did the entire scene, and almost everything fit in simultaneously. I'm pretty convinced.
4) Pretty obvious. Most articles say that Giselle sings to her statue like Ariel does, but Ariel never sings to the statue, she just flirts.
7) I'm not too sure about this one.
8) Didn't catch this, but I wish I had!
10) I'm so proud to be the only one (as far as I know) to have found this. In all the scenes in Robert's apartment, a stuffed animal of a sheepdog sits on one of his couches. Who else could it be referring to?
11) It's not probably not specifically for Ursula, but just a reference to all the villains. If I remember correctly, The Queen (from Snow White), Lady Tremaine (from Cinderella), Maleficent (from Sleeping Beauty), and even Jafar (from Aladdin) do it, as well.
12) Jodi Benson (the voice of Ariel), who has a small role (rather than a cameo like Paige O'Hara [Belle] and Judy Kuhn [Pocahontas]) as Robert's secretary. In case anyone was wondering, I got the behind-the-scenes footage of Jodi from the second disc of TLM's Platinum Edition.
14) I didn't catch onto this the first time I saw it, but as far as I know, I'm the only one who did. I actually really like this one.
ADDITIONAL FINDINGS:
There were three scenes in the film that I feel are extremely similar to scenes in TLM, but did not include them:
- At the King & Queen's Ball (more specifically, at the end of "So Close"), a brokenhearted Giselle stands atop the stairs, watching Robert and Nancy together; the scene and concept are exactly like in TLM (the redhead watches as her "prince" is taken from her by a brunette), but it's not quite shot-for-shot.
- Giselle falls asleep on Robert's couch; I thought this was very similar to the scene were Ariel falls asleep while Sebastian explains how to get Eric to kiss her.
- When Edward and Giselle leave on their date, the dialog between Robert and Morgan is EXTREMELY similar to the scene before the last in TLM, with Triton and Sebastian; both talk about how much they're going to miss "her".
- (contributed by TimeKaiser) Nathaniel chases Pip in the diner, like how Sebastian is chased by Chef Louis in the kitchen.
And of course there's the wedding dresses, which I'm sure everyone picked up on from Enchanted's early trailers. I didn't put it in here for both that reason, and because I couldn't think of a way to actually compare the two (without using stills; I feel that using stills makes a video a slideshow, and slideshows are boring IMO).
So, all I have left to say is that I hope you all enjoyed watching this as much as I enjoyed making it. This is just one of the many reasons why I love Enchanted so much, but of course- The Little Mermaid will always hold that special place in my heart. I hope to do more "Enchanted vs. ___" in the future! :D

The director called this a "Love Story to Disney Animation" and tried to put in as many references to as many animated stories as he possibly could. You did a great job coming up with some that I hadn't thought of before - I *especially* adored CHOMP!
I thought animated Giselle looked REALLY similar to Ariel, with the big blue eyes and the way their face moved.
I noticed that too! in the cinemas i was like...
"OH MY GOD ITS PART OF YOUR WORLD!" then the were all "shut up!!!"'

I've commented on this video before but for real, it always makes me cry. You've done a brilliant job compiling all these homages to The Little Mermaid in Enchanted. Both of these films are among my top favorites, this is so well done! It's such a joy to watch this and point out the little references!

I love both movies! My daughter was 3 when The Little Mermaid came out and it was her favorite. I can remember watching it over and over. I loved Amy Adams in Enchanted! She did a fantastic job. These are two of my favorites.

Enchanted has similarities to lots of other Disney movies, it was done on purpose, as a way to honor Disney's history, the villain turning into a dragon was from Sleeping Beauty, the outfit Robert wore at the dance was worn by Beast in Beauty and the Beast, Narissa was made to look like Yzma from The Emperor's New Groove, the part where Giselle looked through the gems was from Snow White (Dopey in the mines), and many more, so where are the rest of the videos comparing Enchanted to other movies?

Man, I noticed how some scenes were on par, but this is mind blowing. It fits into a live version of "Disney template fail".
It kind of makes sense, really. The director of Enchanted is Kevin Lima, who worked as both an animator and character designer for The Little Mermaid.
He would have had a lot of knowledge of the subtle details and shot layouts for TLM, so it makes sense he would drop easter eggs in Enchanted, like the way Pixar drops easter eggs around their films :-) It's a way for the films' creators to put their personal marks on their works, and it gives them a few in-jokes to laugh about.
This is SO cool! I've watched Enchanted so many times, but you caught way more references than I ever did! Very nice job.
So virtually anyone could've put up a video comparing scenes from Enchanted to scenes from other Disney films, but I just want to let you know how impressed I was on how well put together your video was just in general! You obviously put some time and thought into how you would present this, and it shows. Good work!:]

I'm so glad you made this- I noticed these as well! I'm sure Enchanted had similarities with other Disney princess movies as a way to pay homage. One other thing I thought was similar between The Little Mermaid and Enchanted were the dresses. I think both of their wedding dresses are EXTREMELY close, with the big white puffy sleeves and gloves. :]

It is after all a mix of a lot of different tributes to the Disney princesses--especially the dragon, "left behind shoe" and cameos of princess/charater voice actors. And it was the biggest fairytale twist created so far. So it makes sense to have the cut-outs in the credits.

It's true that Enchanted is full of multiple Disney Movies, but you really went out of your way to specifically analyze just the two movies and made connections that weren't obvious at all. I think you did a wonderful job and have a great eye! Also, I hadn't realized that Jodi Benson was the secretary!! My mind is blown.
I noticed a lot of the bigger parallels when I saw it, but those little ones I never picked up on before. That's pretty cool.

This is a good job! I absolutely love both movies, and I love that Enchanted daringly and shamelessly admits that its inspiration was all the previous disney films. Enchanted even willingly pokes fun at the disney ideal of true love in less than a day "Giselle we shall be married in the morning". Well researched effort. A filmaker of Enchanted said that you could find 1000 references to previous films in this one. I think a Beauty and the Beast & Snow White & Cinderella would be feasible too.

I totally caught the singing to the statue, and when he picks her up and swings her around, but there were quite a few that I never saw. This was pretty cool, actually. I'd like to see someone take "The Princess and the Frog" and show all the references to other movies in that one. There are so many!

Thank you so much for making this video. I was watching Enchanted last night and I felt the same way! I saw so many similarities between The Little Mermaid and Enchanted, I really think that Ariel was the inspiration for Giselle.
I have never actually noticed a lot of these references. I have only notcied the ones that seriously stand out. Plus I haven't seen the little mermaid in a while ;)

This was a really interesting video. Many of those references I caught, but it's still nice to see them organized together like this. I didn't catch that hidden Max either! Good eyes! Oh, and your comparison in the description of the similarities "I'm gonna miss her", I never thought of that. Maybe it's an intended but not straightfoward reference. Hm, I might need to watch it again.

I'm amazed by some of the ones I didn't discover myself durring the three or four times I saw Enchanted in theaters. There are at least one I recall though hat isn't here:
1. Comparing Gizelle in a towel falling on Edward and Ariel wearing a piece of ship sail falling on Eric.
2. Comparing Nathaniel chasing Pip with the chef chasing Sebastian.

That was awesome!!! There's a lot of references to memorable Disney-movie-scenes in Enchanted. And even a lot to Little Mermaid. And You found much more than me ^^
But I think there is one You forgot: Gisele is combing her hair in front of the mirror just like Ariel with the "dinglehopper" in the dinner scene at palace.

that's so crazy!!! not to mention the similarities between the wedding dress of Ariel ant the end of the movie and the wedding dress of Gizelle at the beginning of her move are pretty much the same. and Ariel was the first red headed Disney princess and Gizelle was her most recent, and they both go to different worlds and find the man they love, they pretty much just stole the story and tweeked it a little bit.
Don't listen to any of those annoying comments, they're just readers who are lazy to actually know the facts of the vids they watch. I thought your video was very nice, and it was pretty good to know the similarities myself. :D Pretty cool.
Enchanted is one of the most original movies I have ever seen! While using iconic scenes from Disney classics, it also adds a twist :D
She's also a redhead in a pink dress. And her ball dress was mermaid style specifically because of TLM.
Enchanted used tribute elements from numerous Disney movies, that was the inside joke. SNow WHite house cleaning with animals, Cinderella scrubbing floors etc.
Watched the vid. Read the text. Well... vid is nicely done. And from the text I can tell you long for some appreciation and recognition that it was you have done it. So there I'll give it to you, well done for finding those.

Enchanted was made as a tribute to all disney princesses becuase of their anniversary (That's also why there's some products with the princesses dressed in gold). The movie shows TLM, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, etc

Enchanted is supposed to be a mix of typical popular *Disney* fairy tales and I think they did a great job. Cool vid.
oh and ariel is usually the most celebrated which is perhaps why she is more heavily used in the film :) btw well done on finding all that and putting it together :)
