It’s refreshing, how she belts the final lines; “…when’s it my turn? Wouldn’t I love, love to explore that shore up above?” In the film, Jodi goes into head voice to soften the blow…likely because of the studio setting, the fact that Ariel is singing in a “cavern”, etc. This is one reason I appreciate stage adaptations - the vocals can change slightly to fill a room, and capture an audience.
I should say, not only in the film but aldo, most live performances, Jodi goes to falsetto…

Jodi goes for a more youthful yearning... Sierra's interpretation has a bit more desperation behind it, which fits her voice and the orchestral arrangement and makes me *cry* lol.

Even though she and Eric are the same size in reality, I think in the context of the show, that the Mermaids are ridiculously tiny so as not to be seen. So, when Ursula turns her human she not only gains legs, but she grows as well.

The ocean is huge, and at that era, it would be super easy to stay hidden, if the mermaids stayed down there.
I'm not really sure since I haven't seen the show, but yeah her and Eric are pretty much the same size, so that would be a huge plot hole.
In an alternate universe Christine is now the 'deformity" which is her tail. And Eric is normal. The story is different in which it takes place Ina different setting. But Eric still first falls in love with Christine (Ariel) for her voice.

She's amazing here and in everything. With the closure of Phantom of the Opera a couple weeks ago, I randomly decided to buy and watch the 25th Anniversary version. Sierra Boggess was Christine Daae, and my God she was transcendent. It was the first time I had ever heard her and she blew away every version of Christine I had ever heard or seen live (3x on Broadway, including Brightman).
i’m only 20 years old but i saw phantom on tour in san francisco with my 8th grade drama class and became obsessed! sierra is SO talented and her portrayal of christine is absolutely perfect

The Music industry doesn't want to showcase vocal talent in pop songs. They want songs that are easy to "sing a long" to.

I am such a huge, huge fan of Sierra's voice, and I love this song so much. As much as I don't really want to fuel the Benson vs Boggess fire, Jodi's rendition was sung in a recording studio for a movie, and the scene in the movie fit her subtler performance. However, Sierra's performance perfectly fits the nuances and the dynamics needed to convey the emotion of the song onstage to hundreds of people, and she has SUCH a gorgeous voice. That's just my opinion. I prefer Sierra's performance onstage, but it might have been too "big" for the scene in the movie, and Jodi's performance might have been too "small" for broadway. So each performance fits the medium it was intended for.

Hana Tawil I totally agree. Film is different from Stage. On film, one needs to hold back. Compare Lea Salonga's Fantine to Anne Hathaway's film portrayal of the same role. For that matter, see Samantha Barks' portrayal of Eponine on film versus her acting and singing on stage. On film, you are afforded close ups. On stage, the actor has to act grander.
There’s actually a video of Jodi recording this song for the film. Howard Ashman had to keep telling her to “put a lid on” the vocals - he didn’t want her to sound like she was belting it out in a theatre, but since she was a Broadway actress that was her instinct! So yeah, like you said, different mediums

The people hating need to take a step back, of course alot of us will always be drawn to Jodi Benson. She was our first real taste of Ariel, but for Sierra to step up and sing such an iconic song with such confidence and talent, that not only takes guts but pure skill and hard work. A lot of people are saying that they think Sierra sings better than Jodi, but what they dont understand is Jodi's version wasn't even really sung. All the high, impressive notes and the belting are simply because its on Broadway and she's singing for a crowd. Jodi performed in a studio and was recording a song that's meant to be half spoken in a tiny cavern. I personally like Jodi's version better. It had more personality, and gave more of a feeling of intimacy and magic rather then just singing the song as well as you could. It felt more real, because the song is supposed to be Ariel with all this passion and curiosity inside her, frustrated that no one else can see her point of view and that her dream is so far away, but she ISN'T letting all that out. Shes keeping it bottled up inside her. For this reason, and for the sheer uniqueness of Jodi's voice, I personally like her version better. The Broadway show fell rather flat as I didn't experience for a minute the magic I felt when reading the book or watching the movie. Also sierra always comes off a bit mature for Ariel.

I feel that Jodi could have sang it better after all I heard better versions in other countries. But Sierra lacks some passion and emotions that's for sure.
Not to mention Jodi is the voice actor as well as the singing voice so it really is Ariel singing. This is good but it really isn't as special as Jodi's version. Jodi does the "why does it, what's the word? Burn" parts so much better. Like you said, the spoken type of signing. Which is Ariels speaking voice coming through thanks to Jodi.
