- These are all of the transformations from the Live Action Sailor Moon, a.k.a Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, or PGSM for short, in full 60fps. For those that don't know, the series was originally shot interlaced and released on DVD as so. Most videos from the series that you find online have been deinterlaced down to 30fps. I have properly deinterlaced these to full 60fps to show their full fluent motion.
Of course make sure you're watching in 720p60 mode or else the video will be in 30fps

One of the best things about pgsm is that you can see the special effects team gradually learn what they're doing. We start out with Usagi's noodle hair and then we get to Minako's transformation and it's gorgeous
Far less CGI, less is more.
Fun fact: in the behind the scenes making special of PGSM Ayaka revealed that she got to work with the team when it came to her transformation because there were a lot of shoots where she had to film separately from the other girls

These transformations are super cheesy, but I sincerely love that they tried to do their own thing - they weren't just copying the original series' choreography, and in some cases like Venus, they were tailored to fit the character's backstory within the show. They'll always hold a special place in my heart for that.
That, and the fact that the character's hair actually changes when they transform. Best change.

Ok, these affects may not have aged well, but Venus' transformation is my favorite out of all of them, just the way how she looks up to the sky, and touches her hair looks so beautiful to me.

As a 36 year old woman who grew up on the original SM early 90s in ASIA, not America, I honestly thought when PGSM came out, it was exactly how I had imagined live action SM would look like as a child of early 90s. I love the campy, cheesy feel to it. The nostalgic Power Rangers effect. And of course, the rawness of cringe. This is exactly what my 8-year old self would've loved.

I love how they give Sailor Venus a special transformation. As the leader of the 4 scouts she also has her own cat guardian, Artemis and she’s also known for her other alias as Sailor V. She also pretended to be Princess Serenity to hide Sailor Moon’s identity to the enemies. She is my favorite character ever since.

In the manga and Sailor Moon Crystal, Sailor Venus was the leader of the Inner Sailor Guardians and would impersonate her princess (since she resembled her the most), Serenity/Sailor Moon to keep her from harm.

I know that from today's perspective this looks cheesy and at parts clunky, but to think that this was actually a TV show made during a time where cg and vfx just started out makes it so impressive. Like just the way they tried to make it as close to the animated version as possible is so cool. Can only imagine how this would look like with today's technology
This series is actually super good despite the cheesy effects. I highly recommend it to any sailor moon fans. Give it a chance!

@@undertakenheart the dark Mercury arc was super interesting and the character of Venus is so much different than the anime; she’s a lot more of a loner and won’t get close to the girls due to certain circumstances. The character of princess serenity is also suuuuper different than the anime and manga as well.

For realz! The American Live-Action Sailor Moon would have 16-17 year old girls playing the Sailor Guardians and a younger girl playing Human!Luna/Sailor Luna. If I was cast to play any of the main girls, Sailor Moon is my go-to.

This actually makes sense because in the anime, I just don’t understand how they dont know who each other are. Same hair, same eyes etc. These transformations seem more realistic. Well... it is a live action after all.
@Um Uh they also wear masks in the first part of the manga, and people can point them out. Like Motoki understands who they are just by looking at them, and their parents are hypnotized.

As low budget as it is I’m still super happy we got to experiment a live action sailor moon. I remember illegally downloading and watching this as it aired in Japan and I was obsessed.

Honestly, the fact that the senshi have normal-colored hair or have different hairstyles (or both, in the case of Ami/Mercury) before their transformations make it more logical that people can’t recognize them.
That being said though, Rei/Mars’ hair didn’t change as much; I feel like her hair should have been originally shorter before transforming considering that it was the opposite for Ami/Mercury.

I also love how they incorporated the story in this show, especially the whole Dark Mercury storyline (she became one of my favorite characters after that) and the whole Princess Serenity being kind of crazy!
The only thing I would change if I could remake this show would be to make Sailor Luna an adult and not a child (but I guess they were going for Luna to take the place of Chibiusa, but that's just my guess), and also at the end when the Inner Senshi get their weapons, to give them the Talismans from the Outer Senshi as a sort of reference to them since they don't appear, apart from that it would simply to update the CGI!

The live action had the right idea with how their hair is normal but changes into the iconic style during their transformation
I'm I seriously the only one that actually likes this series? Yes the affects aren't the best considering this was made in the 2000s but the plot in my opinion is absolutely amazing and it's a really unique approach to a Sailor Moon series. Also the merchandise for this show are absolutely beautiful and come on a Dark Sailor Mercury?!?!?! That's like my fanfiction dreams finally came true and it's soooooooo unique!!!!!!!!!!! I love PGSM.
Agreed. I think it has the best plot and character development of all the iterations of Sailor Moon. The characters in Sailor Moon Crystal on the other hand were bland and one dimensional IMO.
