I have a mini driver. Currently Taylormade but that’s sold and a PXG is on order. But, I still carry a driver! That’s because I teach DECADE so having a club that goes just 20 yards less than my driver is great to get closer to greens on tighter holes! But I do have them -1 inch to help the mini stay behind my driver. So they are not just for replacing the driver! Good video 👍🏼
I had a TM Burner and it had a deeper face than the Secret Weapon. No problems and a lot of success hitting the BRNR off the deck. My BRNR loft was set at 11.5 degrees. The BRNR’s been sold and my Secret Weapon is in the process of being built. The upcoming Elyte Mini-Driver in 2 weeks’ time should be very interesting.
Do you have a lot of head speed to get the ball launching well? I guess it depends very much on the ability for the golfers to reliably strike a long shafted club and with them being happy with what most people will see as a very very forward and low Trajectory. So much work has been done proving for low swing speed golfers that they actually gain carry distsnce using 5 or even 7 woods rather than their standard 3 woods... This is equivalent to a 2 wood with a higher CG than a 3 wood which will only see a lower flight. Again I guess it comes down to the golfer in question and what they want to see flight wise 👍👍
This club stands far above other mini drivers. I have not seen any of the testers hit a single bad shot with it. It’s not just for players who are scared to hit driver. It’s also for tour pros who either don’t have their A game on a given day, or who are playing a course like the Sony Open at Waianae Country Club in Honolulu where there are a number of fairways that dogleg at just the distance where almost half the pros go through the bend into the Bermuda rough, wile others hit three wood or even driving iron. It’s just that kind of older course and there are others. The four weights allow precision tuning by an expert fitter. So IMHO there are days and courses where a tour pro would leave driver out and instead use this the entire round. And as you are always trying to help ordinary golfers save money, how about using this mini driver instead of both driver and 3W ? BIG savings. And you just proved yourself that this thing is a fairway finder that repeats consistently right down the middle.
I guess it will come down to a simple numbers discussion. If in say a years time, and all the Tour players are using Mini Drivers in their bags rather than their Drivers and 3 woods and it's also in the main part of a range of amateur bags, then it'll be a change in direction for all golfers. Personally I feel that the selling numbers will be a large magnitude lower and be mainly sold to golfers needing the off the tee help against their wayward driver, and certain high head speed golfers can reliably use this functionally off the deck 👍
I agree with your comment totally. When a course is tight, or has a lot of doglegs, a mini driver could be the best option. I know Jay is a good golfer however he couldn’t miss the fairway. I also think for a beginner golfer this would be a great option until their skills improve to use a longer shaft driver.
Thanks so much Jay. The amount of work that you put into this channel to help all of us enjoy our golf a bit more is truly remarkable and much appreciated I hope you know. Can I ask what Driver you would recommend for a slow swinger (75-80mph) these days please? I like the idea of this one (shorter shaft, 13 degree loft) but you said it may not be suitable for someone like me. Thanks again
It will very much so depend on the golfers club head delivery but a generalised opinion would suggest slow players would need a higher lofted option like a 12 degree head. Most if not all manufacturers now provide these, so I would be looking at the one that gives you the most favourable launch with the right spin window. All drivers can produce different results with different shafts and golfers using them. Currently we're working on creating the database of advanced data for Drivers so that the website members can see not just the Forgiveness differences with the woods but also other metrics we measure in irons also 👍 Launch Factor, Face Speed, Face Spin Rate and Distance Factor 👍
Great review Jay. The detail you go into is very insightful and helpful. I can vouch for your comments about a 90 mph swing struggling to get the ball launched off the deck. I have the Callaway Mini Driver (13.5*) and from the deck I haven’t launched one in 5 attempts on the course 😂. Brilliant off the tee though.
Hello Jay. Fantastic analysis, as always. I don’t remember seeing this done for the Burner from TM. I think it is a brilliant fairway finder, and would like to see a heat map comparison. Thanks!
Jay (same name as my wife), love your analytical approach to testing. Forgiveness and swing speed metrics. Perfect. I have always struggled with driver, and you know what? I'm working big time on it. Just back to game after 12 years off. Went ground zero. Result? 8 months of finding myself, lessons and practice practice practice baby. Would I buy this? Needed new equipment but didn't want to go full Tonto wallet busting. Mizuno ST 230 Max woods you were raving about, helping my rapid return AND improvement over where I was 12 years ago
I would love this as a driver replacement, but since I've already shortened my driver to 44.5 inches, so I don't see much point. Probably to save money, I would by an older gen PXG 12 degree head, loft it to 13 degrees and cut one of my extra PXG driver shafts down to 43.75 and adjust the head weight with the optional weight kit. In this scenario, I would get the bigger head for confidence and I would save a bundle. I have a Black Ops 3 wood set to 16 degree, but I can't launch even that off the deck because my swing faults. I only use it off the tee in a low-spin setup (weights forward). I'm still in hybrid-club mode in the long end of the bag for hitting off the fairway. This won't help my game for the foreseeable future. Money being unlimited, I think this would be a brilliant club to have in the quiver to swap in and out of the bag depending on the course, and the adjustment is unparalleled for a mini-driver. Well done PXG. Your comments at the end of the video about delivery are spot-on. FWIW, PXG is marketing this at the advanced player in some of their marketing language on their website.

Very interesting that you hit up with it. I would think it's designed to hit down even though I'm planning to hit up with my fw and driving iron off the tee this year.
Generally hitting with a descending angle of attack also promotes less dynamic loft delivery, with a head at 13 degrees static, then delofted at impact hitting off the deck will cause launch angle to be I again lower. Dare to slightly thin the ball (hit low on the face) and the roll will mean it launches lower again. It's amazing from the tee, but personally I could never play this off the deck as I wouldn't have a clue what distance it will finish after it stops rolling. I swing my 3 wood at about 107mph and even I have my 3 wood upped in loft too a 4 wood to promote a higher flight. It's just my observations and other people may have great results from the deck, but for me personally it's a tee only option 👍
Awesome looking club but at $450 this is expensive but what isn’t today?! Drivers are $600-$650 new. It’s probably the best for fitting with 4 moveable weights and adjustable hosel. Loving my TSR3 driver and 3 wood so need to make a change to my bag but nonetheless definitely a great club

This is only what I have found with my particular delivery as measured and displayed on screen from GCQuad. If you or anyone else displays as a unique characteristic of their game more loft than I at impact then the flight will of course be higher than what I found personally. What I'm getting at is, this club has less loft than a 3 wood, most golfers don't have the club head speed to make a 3 wood work and commonly find as much distance and sometimes more when using say a 5 of even 7 wood instead. Loft is a slower swinger friend. So a club with even less loft and a higher CG than a shorter face height fairway, will struggle more. Did you test this for yourself or did you buy before trying it out? 👍

@@AskGolfNutI’ve seen those videos and most were well over 100miles from the deck, plus are golf professionals. But this mini is the best due to the massive adjustability.
I guess the question i would ask the other reviewers, is what are the comparing it too to say its easy to hit off the deck......is it easier than a driver....you would hope so , is it easier than a normal 3 wood , basic logic would say it could it possible be. taller face means you'll be catching it lower more often and most people struggle with hitting a 3 wood too low on the face as is. and even after all that i would be trying to solve the issue as to why you need to hit a mini driver off the fairway to begin with.
I've done bits of content on the course before doing tests of clubs and being honest, really no one cares, view counts weren't any higher and the messing about driving to the course etc only added to the time it took to create. ☹️👍👍
Love my driver (XXiO 13) but hate my 3 wood. Still need something to cover between my driver and 5 wood - usually distance off the tee rather than as a fairway wood. Good option? Better than Taylor Made or Callaway offering?
Absolutely yes, if the heavier weight was placed at the back then the spin profile and also launch may come up a touch. The overriding factor is still that it is a 13 degree head and for me to try and get this to be functionally usable I would have to weight change and max up in loft but then that may well take away from off the tee. I think the main take from all the off the deck comments surrounding other review channels findings, is that yes this can be hit from the deck, so can any club including driver, but unless people have a massive amount of speed, any club which is effectively lofted as a 2 wood won't out carry a 3 wood and the Trajectory of the flight will be so shallow. This is the same discussion as slower swinger getting more functional controllable distance from actually 5 or 7 woods rather than 3 woods as the golfers don't have the speed to get the ball launching with a 3 wood over the 5 and 7. This is a 2 wood loft. It may well be a massively impressive club off the tee and I feel that this really is the proper story that all should take from this. People's / reviewers feelings compared to physics aren't always in line... 👍👍
PXG has FREE fitting in USA, so please everyone go get fit. I've played for decades and only started getting fit 10 years ago, and no I always get fit.
Since most players can't hit a mini driver off the deck makes the whole concept of a mini driver ridiculous. Why shorten the shaft for more consistan hits then shrink the head? I play a 42.5" driver with a 360cc ping head. Its a fairway finder. Ping 440 I believe has a 46" driver. Tiger Woods use to play a 42 inch driver. With most pros playing a 45ish length driver. What makes anyone think the weekend warrior can handle a "standard length driver. Cut 3" off the driver and add 18grams of weight to the head for a 12k head. Add a jumbo max lite grip and bring it to the range and let everyone give it a wack. Crank up the loft and let senior men and women plus kids give it a rip. It will put a smile on their face.
One thing though maybe not considered is that you are swinging at the lower speed but with a much too stiff a shaft for that swing speed, if you had a 90 mph swing speed a regular higher launching shaft !!
So no shaft affects ball flight. Impact values determine ball flight. For us to compare clubs we compare impact values and Jay will deliver within a margin the same impact values at all speeds. If a shaft change causes you to deliver different impact values you will get a different result. But that's no different than 2 people with 2 different swings hitting the ball.
@@JJ_Khailha Yes changing the shaft for most people will effect impact values, but there's no relationship to which shaft will launch higher or lower , softer shafts can launch higher but they can also over flex and cause lower hooks. Think of the shaft as a ticking pendulum , with perfect timing you want to hit the ball when the shaft is at the dead bottom of its tick , changing the shaft changes how fast/slow it ticks, and thus impact can be before or after dead bottom, resulting in very different flights.

Love my driver (XXiO 13) but hate my 3 wood. Still need something to cover between my driver and 5 wood - usually distance off the tee rather than as a fairway wood. Good option? Better than Taylor Made or Callaway offering?
For the specific need absolutely, the weighting on the bottom adds another dimension to adjustment that sets it apart 👍
PXG has a 4 wood, which I used turned up to 15 degrees, and BlackOps version is amazing. Also, the Taylormade 3 woods are amazing,
I wonder how this would perform up against a strong 3w ( such as the TSR 2+) ….same shaft flex, length…. Maybe an interesting video
Would making a change to the weights help the slower swing players with spin?
@@AskGolfNut great analysis Jay, it’s capability of moving the weights around makes very useful, cheers.
@dobster5819 extremely, fitted well can transform any club from not usable to performing great relatively 👍
I play my driver off the deck all the time. This would be so easy to hit off the fairway.
In that case then yes this will be a massive upgrade 😊😊😊
PXG has FREE fitting in USA, so please everyone go get fit. I've played for decades and only started getting fit 10 years ago, and no I always get fit.
Maybe the Titleist mini will be the first good one of the deck....still waiting
Thank you for that amazing info . love it
Glad you enjoyed the video 👍
@@andy_bickley So can the shaft affect impact values?
@@JJ_Khailha Yes changing the shaft for most people will effect impact values, but there's no relationship to which shaft will launch higher or lower , softer shafts can launch higher but they can also over flex and cause lower hooks. Think of the shaft as a ticking pendulum , with perfect timing you want to hit the ball when the shaft is at the dead bottom of its tick , changing the shaft changes how fast/slow it ticks, and thus impact can be before or after dead bottom, resulting in very different flights.
@@andy_bickley Ah, very interesting and a very good explanation. Cheers.
