I've been using a pick for years, but I'm now transitioning to playing with my fingers, and it's been quite challenging (arm fatigue), especially when tackling fast songs like those by Iron Maiden. Fantastic breakdown and explanation of Steve's technique. This is the best lesson I've seen on the gallop. I've always played this style with three fingers, but I understand the difference in sound now. Slowing building up two finger speed.

Excellent video...love your very informative and detailed videos regarding Steve's particular techniques....I'm currently retraining myself to use 2 fingers instead of 3....definitely takes some practice...especially after using 3 fingers for 12 yrs and a pick prior to then.
Probably the single best bass lesson in existence. I violated Common mistake #1 for years (it was how I was taught, unfortunately). Worse than paying for bad info was the frustration led to my giving up on the bass. Many years later I happened across this video and started back up ...the bad habit woke back up with a vengeance as if some demon fighting exorcism. It took a while but I learned the correct way...better late than never. A million thanks!

Cool video. The Gallup was one of the first things I learned on the bass. I also lead with my middle finger and don't anchor my thumb. Learned that from watching live after death in the eighties over and over haha
This has been the most informative lector on how to actually perform the gallop like Steve Harris. I’ve watched a lot of other channels which cover his style and other technical aspects but none of them actually describe how to physically perform the gallop. Yeah 12a is defintely something I do. Physically it is easier to alternate the 1 from index and middle each gallop. Glad to be aware of it a bit more now. Great video, thank you.

For some reason i cant play this style with 2 fingers, but learning lot about using index, middle and ring finger from Billy Sheehan helped me a lot. Chapter 12c ;) Great tutorial.

I play bass 14 years and your instructions are really good. I can gallop but due to the nature of my genre prefences I gallop faster and more comfortably with two fingers

Wow a lot to think about for such a "simple" technique! The advice of the wrist impressed me a lot, which I usually rely my thumb on the pickup when I'm play the e-string. The Steve Harris gallop is a matter of love/hate to me: which is a very cool rithmic thing but is also a bit boring to listen to for too much time. I, by ear, found the sound of Steve. With playing very hard. I then got the string and fret sound. Playing run to the hills. I actively played hard. Ofcourse, now, I understand, his strings are extremely low, and thick. So. That means, he plays VERY VERY light.

In regards to 3-finger galloping technique: @11:09 "... your bassline would lack authenticity."
I agree this technique may not accentuate the note division the same way Harris' technique does.
However the quote can be taken out of context.
One thing is certain Steve Harris utillises two fingers unlike Billy Sheehan and Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse.
Alex uses 3 fingers for both galloping and straight 16th note pulse.

Steve Harris uses only his index and middle finger, as do I, and it's not hard to do. I was doing it the day I picked up the bass. Steve Harris is the reason I started playing in the first place so of course the gallop would be the first thing I did.

@@sinlokemp Now kids need a 13 steps vid to learn the easiest technique on bass there is. I simply revved up the turntable, listened and copied. Shall I provide a link to what a turntable is ? I bet Steve never put that much thought in it. It's just his way. I hope you will stop copying in time and find your own particular style.
Ive got nerve dammage in my last 2 fingers. 2 fingers is better than No fingers.
I find 3 fingers the easiest my pinky is too short to even reach the string 😂
@@sinlokemp when i first started playing i used 3 fingers (still do at times). but int eh alt 10-12 years i stat3ed workign on doing stuff two fingered because it jsut sounds more correct when playing IM songs.

I don’t play a lot of Maiden stuff, but when I do I usually cheat and do the 3 finger gallop. Can I play along? Yes. But it never sounds like Steve. Thanks to your vid (and Covid 19 keeping me inside all day), I am now able to do the 2 finger method with the correct accented subdivisions. Sounds like Steve!! Now just need to get up to speed. Thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to make this and share. I'm only a beginner really but have been trying to get my head around the Steve Harris gallop technique for a while. You have definitely given me a few things to focus and work on :)
Couple of questions please:
1) Would you say it is more the pad of the finger like slapping the pads into the strings and through like normal walking finger. Or is it more the tips brushings past? Sure I read something about him lightly brushing strings or something but he seems to hit hard???
2) What would be a good Iron Maiden song to start with that uses the gallop but maybe at a slower speed?
Also what song to progress onto at intermediate and advanced gallop?

1) I use the pads of my fingers for the skin gets thicker and thicker. I also use the tips. But you actually have to hit them as you do when slapping with your thumb. Imagine you think there is electricity in your strings and you want to check that out, you would not touch it as you would press you fingerprint on your smartphone to turn it on, but instead you would touch it as quickly as you can to avoid being electrified. The same thing you have to do to get the right amount of feeling and natural click sound.
2) To start, just try the "slow" galloping parts in "hallowed..." and "The rime..." then try triplets like in Steve's early songs. And when gallop is a second nature to you, risk yourself on "Somewhere in time" and "Killers".

I definitely use economy/alternate plucking (2 fingers) to achieve the gallop. Seems far less of strain to myself tbh, once you get used to it! Just my preference to achieve the same result

Time to re-visit my 3-finger technique - I play Losfer, Trooper and NOtB in one of my bands and have never really invested the time to get the speed from two fingers for the gallop. So I use 3 but you're 100% right that the feel is wrong!

I do the same and I always feel guilty when I play it for people because I know it's wrong. Most people don't seem to be able to tell though... or maybe they're just too nice
I will admit I'm a gutiar player that played bass in a metal band just to make money, and Iron Maiden was the only band that I had to cheat and use a pick on. Like Number of the Beast, and the Trooper .
@@Pnic1193 I feel like at least 95% of people (including musicians) won't ever hear it or detect it. But I feel like I'm lying to myself by playing with 3 fingers... That's me though, and it still sounds pretty amazing, but I'm gonna work to get that technique up to par, if only for myself and a few other people!

Great video. I really liked the way you talked about authenticity. Some of your comments about music and technique actually have kind of a "Maiden" vibe about them, philosophically. Question about strings: For someone starting out on these techniques, would rounds or flats be better, or does it matter?
Hey, thanks a lot for your good words. As for the strings, it's a matter of preference, if you like mellow or bright sound, and if you don't mind hearing you finger sliding on the rounds of the strings. But before all, the gauge is most important. I suggest you never use harder than 45-105, even if you're not a beginner. DG
