Steve Harris is the first metal bass player I ever saw up close. Little Rock 1983 Barton Coliseum Piece of Mind tour. I was 17. I'm now 55. I remember it clearly. Just as amazing as you can imagine. I was only 8 or 10 feet away from him. Amazing technique and skill.
'Arry is one of my top 3 bass players who inspired me when I was playing, and he's still Got It. That bass sound is uniquely his and nobody else sounds like 'Arry but 'Arry. I'm not so fond of their newer material (round about after "Brave New World" the songwriting began really fizzling and the songs got entirely too long for their own good), but those first 6 or 7 albums are still works of genius. Up until "7th Son" they had me madly devoted.
Great video. I saw Iron Maiden in 1980 with Paul Di'anno and Dennis Stratton on their first full UK Tour with Praying Mantis. It changed my life forever.
Hi, Paul del Bello. I'm a little confused... Do you say Steve Harris uses FLATWOUND STRINGS? Is that correct? If it is, it's quite amazing. I didn't expect such a sound coming from flatwound set.
The funny thing is that Steve has no clue of what he is playing, neither scales or notes... He never had any interest in music theori but still is the most influencial (and one of the best) bass player (and a great composer as well) in Metal history.
This is not entirely true. While he isn't interested in music theory, in his head he clearly understands things like major/minor scales, modes and sevenths, because he applies them to his bass lines. He simply doesn't know the names, but otherwise he knows all that stuff.
Everyone that plays music knows music theory regardless if they know it or not . I'll even make it easier and you really need to know it on bass. The root , 3rd 4th 5th and octave you can play on three strings without such a stetch. I can not stress enough as a bassist that if you wanna' play bass you really need to know every note on the fretboard and all the octaves on the fret board. Bass is a beast. Bass is not so much a guitar and you have to take into consideration of what you want that note to sound like and or ring. For example an A in standard tuning of course. Do you want it to ring out for a full bar or is it just an eighth note. Then at the end if the song is in the key of A how do you end the song? Let the open A ring a bit then slide down on the E string at the fifth fret and mute. Example.ACDCs Shot Down in Flames. The ending you go up to the 12th fret to hit the D octave then hit the A octave and slide down and either pull off or pick the open A string. Where to go from there? The song aint over till the fat lady sings. Catch the A on the E string and slude down to end the song. You cant leave it open or dead or whatever if you play bass. The ending should be dramatic. Even if the dong ends in E yoi can grab the 12th fret and slude down an pull off and immedieatly mute. There is so much you can do on bass. As a rock bassist I hate to say it but Alabama's Teddy Gentry played a lot on higher octaves. Listen to Feels So Right in the intro and tell me he aint two octaves higher than the rood. Steve Harris is a bass gawd but not special.
Also, if you have a fender style of bass, change the bridge to a badass bridge( like Steve has) or the new fender replacement bridge which is the same. It gives more sustain and a more solid tone. It makes flats push harder.
A PJ bass may help you sound like Steve by giving you some brightness in the bridge position. I also think more vintage output pickups that are not too dark/overwound help. He used a Seymour Duncan SPB1 years before he got his own SPB4.
Cool. I remember seeing them many times in the 80s....Went and got a badass bridge..had to shim the neck because the bridge was thick as hell lol...A Lotus P bass in 1983 lol. Weighed a ton lol
Do not boil your stings. They'll become very brittle. To clean mine I leave them in a jar full of white spirit or 98% alcohol. The day after are like new. I've bough my last set of strings back in 2016 and I've got 5 basses which I use everyday.
Love these videos! I hope to see some cool bassists from other countries! Taiji from X Japan, and Tetsu from L'arc~en~ciel are two very talented bassists, and both are very influential for rock bass in Japan. Id love to see a video covering them, and hear what you think about their respective styles.
I use my finger alternate but song like the clansman ,if i started with index i start the the 2nd 4 note middle , index then the 3rd note started with index reciprocal
Hello! Great video! I have a question: You say that the player's touch should be light when doing gallops, but it does indeed sound like Steve Harris plays very hard. How does he get the clank, when he plays so light?
A bunch of ideas for you: Billy Gould, Carol Kaye, Chris Baio, Chris Squire, Chris Wolstenholme, Colin Greenwood, Flea, Geddy Lee, Jaco, James Jamerson, Joe Dart, John Entwistle, Les Claypool, Mark Hoppus, Mark Stoermer, Matt Sharp, Paul McCartney, Paul Simonon, Roger Waters, Tim Commerford, Tina Weymouth
@ 0:29 .. surprised he didn't name the band "Camel Toe" 😆 Re boiling strings, you don't NEED to add chemicals, I used to boild old dirty strings just in water (or did I add maybe a little dish soap), it certainly brightened them up loads. Certainly no harsh chemicals.
But what about Robert Deleo From STP? He is a very interesting and underrated bass player & one of my influences on my bass playing. That would be very great video!
One thing people don't consider about Steve is that he basically stopped doing all the crazy fills and stuck to root note pretty much exclusively since 1990 or so
I mean the box on the major7 chord (Cmaj7 / D7 / Eminor) should be LYDIAN, it shouldn't have a perfect fourth... In this case on Cmaj7 you wouldn't want to play an F but an F# instead... Yet it somehow works... Not if he insinsted on the F, I guarantee it would sound totally out of key, because it is, it only works because of a quick passage through the "box shape". Anyways
Boiling strings just removes skin and DNA. It does not "restore" the string. That is just simple engineering. You want that fresh sound, put fresh strings on.
I play with 3 fingers because i thought he was playing with three (i grew up in the 80s, no internet!) But in several interviews he has made it clear he uses two fingers, which really makes his technique that much more amazing.

We've all been waiting for this one, haven't we? 🤘

You actually remember the show? Impressive.
Wow!! Thumbs up for you Paul! I can't imagine how awesome that show has been!
'Arry is one of my top 3 bass players who inspired me when I was playing, and he's still Got It. That bass sound is uniquely his and nobody else sounds like 'Arry but 'Arry. Incredible!!!
Hi, Paul del Bello. I'm a little confused... Do you say Steve Harris uses FLATWOUND STRINGS? Is that correct? If it is, it's quite amazing. I didn't expect such a sound coming from flatwound set.
He does
Definitely does and I was very surprised when I first found that out as well
You rock! Thanks for the help!
Love your content, please do Justin Chancellor next

By this point in history, even if he doesn't know the names, after fifty years of playing he definitely does know scales etc

STEVE HARRIS IS THE GEDDY LEE OF HEAVY METAL
Gran video! Como siempre!! Nos enseñas mucho a todos Paul! Thanks
Cool. I remember seeing them many times in the 80s....Went and got a badass bridge..had to shim the neck because the bridge was thick as hell lol...A Lotus P bass in 1983 lol. Weighed a ton lol
Harris is one of the reasons I play with my fingers. The other is Geezer Butler.
Hey, thanks for citing Didier GÉRÔME ;)
Do not boil your stings. They'll become very brittle.
To clean mine I leave them in a jar full of white spirit or 98% alcohol. The day after are like new.
I've bough my last set of strings back in 2016 and I've got 5 basses which I use everyday.

Hello! Can you tell us more about the right hand of this technique? Maybe something is not understood? There is a desire to learn this technique!
Hi, as explained in the video there is already a very good Didier Gérome tutorial around, check the link in the description!
Ah shit! This is what I've been waiting for!
awesome Paul !!!!!!!!!! I have the westham bass , it's not so easy as you make it look :)
Qué grande Steve Harris por favor!!
Muy buen video! Clarísimo. Gracias!
Important to note that the chord progression mentioned includes the minor 6th and dominant 7th, not major.
How about one of the most underrated Bassist of all time JJ Burnel of the Stranglers?
Agreed!
Now there is some bass tone right there
I use my finger alternate but song like the clansman ,if i started with index i start the the 2nd 4 note middle , index then the 3rd note started with index reciprocal
pls, do a Peter Hook or Jhon Entwistle
Hello! Great video! I have a question: You say that the player's touch should be light when doing gallops, but it does indeed sound like Steve Harris plays very hard. How does he get the clank, when he plays so light?
Light but very fast! Low action does the rest. Check the tutorial linked in the description. It's very well explained there. Thanks for stopping by.
@@PaulDelBelloYT Thanks!
He is almost tapping down onto the strings, rather than getting the meat of his fingers under them. He has described it as "tickling" the strings.
Gary Thain (Uriah Heep) would be great. He had pretty unique style.
Great video .
Can you create one about John Entwistle and one about Jack Bruce?
You should do a video on roger glover
I would like to know if can make a video about John entwistle of The Who.
A bunch of ideas for you: Billy Gould, Carol Kaye, Chris Baio, Chris Squire, Chris Wolstenholme, Colin Greenwood, Flea, Geddy Lee, Jaco, James Jamerson, Joe Dart, John Entwistle, Les Claypool, Mark Hoppus, Mark Stoermer, Matt Sharp, Paul McCartney, Paul Simonon, Roger Waters, Tim Commerford, Tina Weymouth
1rst the index and then the middle and come back to index ...get the slow motions of Steve's hand and check it.!
GReat channel, great content.
How about doin Class Grenayde, bassist of Lord of the Lost?
@ 0:29 .. surprised he didn't name the band "Camel Toe" 😆
Re boiling strings, you don't NEED to add chemicals, I used to boild old dirty strings just in water (or did I add maybe a little dish soap), it certainly brightened them up loads.
Certainly no harsh chemicals.
GJ
TY
But what about Robert Deleo From STP? He is a very interesting and underrated bass player & one of my influences on my bass playing. That would be very great video!
that's why i bougth flats
Mike Mills of R.EM!
Jason Newsted next?
How to sound like klaus flouride from Dead Kennedys please!
dobermann bass tab next ?
Bass cover of sea of madness pls
How about the underrated Markus Grosskopf from Helloween?
billy sheehan next plz!
One thing people don't consider about Steve is that he basically stopped doing all the crazy fills and stuck to root note pretty much exclusively since 1990 or so
Indeed unfortunately, since then he started using chords more and more, I wonder why😢
Roger Waters, Paul McCartney, John Entwistle, Les Claypool or Shavo Odadjian for a future video?
tone knob has to be 100%?
How about adding some flavor by spotlighting Bad Brains bassist extraordinaire Darryl Jenifer.
Fast gallop is easier with 3 fingers (ring-middle-index)
I've tried to play bass like Steve Harris but I'm not as fast I use to be with my fingers! Jim Greszczuk
My math teacher and his brother actually ate with Mr Harris in the 90s
I mean the box on the major7 chord (Cmaj7 / D7 / Eminor) should be LYDIAN, it shouldn't have a perfect fourth... In this case on Cmaj7 you wouldn't want to play an F but an F# instead...
Yet it somehow works...
Not if he insinsted on the F, I guarantee it would sound totally out of key, because it is, it only works because of a quick passage through the "box shape".
Anyways
I'm early!
Sei un grande e poi parli un inglese che quasi capisco. Capirei meglio il torinese ma va bene!
😂😂😂
I DIDN'T know Bruce Dickinson, kept his socks in his tights! ;oP
Just to prove your need distortion, rounds and a pick to play metal.
👏👍😃 !
Steve Harris looks like he could be anyone's dad tbh.
Boiling strings just removes skin and DNA. It does not "restore" the string. That is just simple engineering. You want that fresh sound, put fresh strings on.
How to sound like Nick Oliveri from Queens of the Stone Age
You forgot "Play a crapload faster than you're able to play".
plus he'll grow his fingernails for recording for the extra attack.
Harris is hitting the strings with 3 fingers on the right hand. That makes it easier to play his style.
I play with 3 fingers because i thought he was playing with three (i grew up in the 80s, no internet!) But in several interviews he has made it clear he uses two fingers, which really makes his technique that much more amazing.
Hint: DO NOT boil your strings. Seriously.
