If I would run into a mountain lion, I could not care less what color it is. Black, brown, green, pink with poka dots I am still peeing myself.😅😊
Lol😆😄
Lol 😄😆
😂 me too!
I've done my research over the years and all I can say is we are 100% in agreement. You did a perfect job covering this subject (or should I say PUR-fect). I've finally given up reading forums, Facebook etc., where everyone "knows what they saw." Most sightings are mistaken, and there is the random person who goes to unknown lengths to fake it. The only thing I will go along with is, the possibility of a wandering mountain lion or an escape is not totally (but nearly so) out of the question. An excellent, well researched, well done, and honest video. Thank you for that Cliff!
I think excitement plays a part in missightings, it would be so cool to find something rare that people convince themselves what they have seen. Getting a real good look at something in the field can be difficult and can skew one’s perspective. Many of these sightings could even be large black dogs or even bears, if seen at long range or in thick woods. Interesting topic though, thanks for shedding some light on this. Enjoyed the video. Patrick
Yes, there is a brood of them living in the old Dyers Quarry section of French Creek State park but we arent suppose to know what goes on back there. But those of us that have been there….know. They arent ferral cats either!
I think all of your information is pretty accurate. The terrain you were in there looks real good. That looks like a good spot. Hope you get some good photos from your cam. Will be looking forward to the update and photos. Good job. 👍
Great video Cliff. Solid scientific explanation. I am a biologist and educator, retired. You're a great teacher, as evidenced by all your videos, but especially when you have had students on your vids. However, just to stoke the fire, there are a lot of crazy true stories about escaped lions, tigers, bears, and more. There was a big famous case in Ohio with at least half a dozen exotic pets that were released by one guy. So when you hit the trails, be sure to carry your bear spray. And you tiger and big black cat sprays!!🐯 🦍😾🦝🦓🦬🐷🐪🐘🐧🦖🦕
I watch your videos for interesting content, for relaxation, and for education. Thanks for sharing this knowledge. 😊
You love it I love it yes
Very good vid! My question is, how much more can i love this guy?
❤good video.
Almost like humans. We are all 1 race.
The difference is how much melatonin they have!!!😊❤❤❤
Speaking as someone with a degree in Anthropology, you are absolutely correct. Our physical characteristics as a species vary along multiple gradations known as "clines." "Race" is a socially constructed set of concepts, which, however, IN NO WAY diminishes the reality of the damage that both systemic racism and racial discrimination by individuals does to fellow human beings!
During my 10 years as a park ranger in SW Florida I had plenty of Florida panther (puma) sightings with photos. I also saw a dark chocolate brown colored bobcat. There were people who reported in the ranger station seeing a dead panther along the highway that turned out to be bobcats, raccoons, or a river otter. I've seen photos that people claimed were panthers but looked more like bobcats. And what was claimed to be a black panther but looked like a black bear to me. I can't say for certain what these people saw, but they could be mistaken. Wildlife sightings in the wild are not as special as people want to believe.
Good research Cliff. Unfortunately, some people don’t like to have their opinions questioned.
I heard a person from Pennsylvania tell a story of a mountain lion that was very dark brown in color
your a great teacher, tonight i was giving a lecture on the Minquis Trail and someone ask me if the Horseshoe Trail is an Indian trail, i told them about your series on the trail and how you talk about when it was laid out and i told all75 people to check out your web site
Another great video Cliff!
As far as this question goes I would have to say yes I have seen Black Panthers or Black mountain Lions in Ohio on the southern end More in the West Virginia area and Kentucky and yes I was on a mountain bike when I witnessed it on one of my travels The second time I've seen one close to 30 something my years later I seen one go across the street in Ohio again because that's why I live in Ohio on one of my 7-day trips mountain biking and I did not have my GoPro turned down for that one matter of fact the battery died about 2 hours before I seen that thing it went right over the street in two moves
My wife is from Eastern Kentucky and she claims there are black panthers down in the hills there. She's never seen one , but she said she and her girlfriend heard one out in the woods near the house late one night. She said they sound like a woman screaming bloody murder! I've googled what they sound like and it's a little unsettling. So if black panthers don't exist, then maybe they really did hear someone being murdered!!🐈⬛
A lot of the depictions of panthers from years ago were black. The KY DFW says there are no mountain lions in Kentucky. Despite that assertion large cat paw prints have been found in Kingdom Come State Park. About 10 years ago DFW shot one out of a tree in Paris KY that was traced to N Dakota. I saw one cross the road in front of me on the Mountain Parkway 20 years ago. So you can’t believe what the state says on the issue.
Thank you Cliff.
Well I learned something today. I actually did think there is a species of black squirrels. Good to know about that black phase. This was very interesting. Oh...did you ever figure out what that was in the trail cam pic? ❤❤❤❤
I saw a bunch of black squirrels in Myrtle Beach a few years ago
I’ve met someone who saw black mountain lions in WV multiple times.
So cuabe I met someone who says he has seen a black man. Lion in Wva.the long tips of outer hairs can be black. All blAck is a different mAtter.the
Mutations occur.
Pennsylvania has Nittany Lions & Pittsburgh Panthers, right? 😉
😂
Was looking for this comment.
Thanks.
"They are the same thing"
Really enjoyed that thanks Cliff. I Know very little about mountain lions. We don’t have them in Australia. Think they are beautiful tho. I found what you read is fascinating. I watch a lot of animal docos. Thanks, for, share. Please take care
Hi Cliff, I live in East Central Alabama I have seen either a black panther or mountain lion from late eighties to one crossing the road last year in one county north of where I live no I don't have pictures but promise you not fibbing, I know we also have bobcats, also at the time of sightings before last year no cell phones, last year I was driving in the day time, so if we have one or a few, my sightings have been sparse, I'm not at all upset with you I enjoy and learn from your content, thank you for sharing

If my neighbor's very large house cat, which she will on occasion, walk on a leash, were ever to get loose, I rather imagine some out here in Smithtown, Long Island, might have some kind of wildlife name for it, This is a stand alone statement and of itself proves nothing as to someone else's observations. I'm not inferring that someone saw a large house cat and thinks it was a mountain lion.I just hope that Terry's black house cat never gets loose, because this beast will have some people perplexed, regardless of how the pictures might be analyzed by the average person who is not an expert on all kinds of cats.
I like when Cliff creates content like this too.
Here's something you might want to try as lure for your trail cameras if you want to film Mountain Lions or Bobcats. Get some catnip and pour that out in front of your cameras.
I don't know what I saw, but it was a Puma sized and shaped cat in northwestern Pennsylvania. My first thought was that it was a Blackbear but when it got sideways to me, I could plainly see a long black cat tail.

Thank you for all your research and sharing it with us. YOU ARE A VERY GOOD TEACHER.
some people say things just to gain attention too. like you said I agree 100%...have visual proof with clear photos or video. I really enj0oy your perspectives on these things. Thank you and God Bless 🙏🙏🌺🌺🙏🙏
Who in the world could ever be miffed at Cliff for anything? SMH. 🤔
In 8th grade I memorized the Order of Species. It was fun that you said it.
If I had to choose, I would take a sighting of the Black Siberian Tiger.
Thanks for great video. 😊
My sister in SE Oklahoma just got a huge animal on her game camera in her driveway I don’t know how to share a photo but I can’t send it to you looks dark colored to me and big
u saying a puma is a mountain lion..
i was taught a south american puma was a panther ??? 80s education uk an tv .... not same ? or just plain wrong?
nuff stories of big black cats in uk. but little real evidence too lol
In the 80s, a local elementary school had to close for the day because the teachers and kids saw one right outside the school. Shortly after, a PSP trooper saw it in the area and took a shot at it with no result. I was unaware so many ppl didn't know they are real until much later in my life when I moved away from Appalachia and the internet came to be. They look exactly like black jaguars.
Thanks Cliff! nice hike 👍🏾
We seem to have more black squirrels in northern Michigan than southern. Don’t know why. Thanks
Yes, there are more black squirrels the farther north you go. I'm in Canada, and black squirrels seem to outnumber grays by 2 or 3 times. Maybe the dark fur helps them to absorb more sunlight, and therefore stay warmer in colder climates.
@@soggyminnow8331 sounds reasonable.
Same in Wisconsin.
I truly believe you very much.
Well I've seen one so till the image of it from my mind goes away they are out there!
The real question is "Is Cliff real?!
He definitely is real, I have seen him in videos and have his found tracks on the AT.
I hear sometimes people try to put out grilled cheesy tuna sandwiches in the woods to try to attract the rare Cliff. Very elusive. 😊
I hope I never see either.
In Lehigh County, PA (the county neighboring mine) we did have state wildlife biologists out hunting for an alleged mountain lion less than a year ago. The feline in question was eventually apprehended and turned out to be a large house cat. :-) I'm completely blind and hence find discussions of visual misidentifications intriguing, even though I have no skin in this particular game.
Good stuff. Perhaps you could use your deductive research skills in the political arena. Just saying.
People see what they want to see. Good photos are necessary. Thanks cor the informative video.
Panthers, mountain lions, pumas, bobcats, etc., hope I don’t encounter any of them. 😂
Why? A lion or bobcat sighting is a thrill of a lifetime.
@@kerrygrim7934 yeah, but it could be the last thrill you ever get if they’re hungry!
If people are seeing black cats they're probably see pets that people buy as kittens illegally! They grow into these large cat's and the owners can't take care of them and don't want fined or jail time so they release them!
Think of it this way! There's more tigers in private collection in the United States than in all of the wild
Would be crazy if there was big kitty's here in Pennsylvania great video as always ty Steve On To The Next YES PLEASE much needed
Dim light in the fo to est gloom at dawn or duskcould look black .they are not prismatic black like hummigbirds an use to hide riby red.none the less,i can show you a seemingly black blue jay ,out beyond a b picture window heavily shaded by arbor vitae bush .yesonce see a black leopard at ft. lewisl😂s,Washinto, which was a mascot of an in fantry regiment in 1959.
To my knowledge mountain lions, cougars, puma are all part of the same animal species found here in North America. And to be honest if one is after or stocking you does it really matter?
However panthers are not really common in North America.
Oh and to be simply honest most folks are guilty of using what they see as common usage not factual scientific knowledge.
I regularly see melanistic squirrels here. I also see melanistic squirrels with red-orange-brown tails. (just call them red tails or orange tails for short). I even saw one with banded tail stripes I never seen before, but it was dead, looked half eaten. The back limbs were left as well as it's tail, which was banded, but you could only see this up close. I took pictures of the skull because at the time I was like "ooh I gotta get the lateral (side) and bottom skull pictures google never has!" And I forgot about getting the picture of it's body.
I live in the secondary snow belt in ohio, occassionally I see black squirrels I always thaught it was a seperate species from reguler red squirrels or even grey squirrels. In my backyard, the black squirrel was playing with the normal colored squirrel
I own a black mountain lion, his name is Toby and he likes to eat, he's 22 pounds but I don't let him leave the house
Cliff...I love your videos and love you to pieces BUT...I don't care for the way you don't go in order. The last video you were on your way to Pymatuning. Now here you are doing mountain lions. Why not finish the northwest Pa trip before starting another series. It would flow nicely. Just a suggestion, please don't hate me.😢
Sorry to see you are struggling with OCD. Please research the condition so you have a better understanding of it, how it affects your life and how best to manage it. Not meant to be snarky... only best wishes from a nurse.
@@dca3174 I don't have OCD.
I saw a moose swimming down the Susquehanna River.......not
That was probably me. Sorry.
"Fifty Years a Hunter and Trapper". E. N. Woodcock wrote about his father in the early 1800's. "Father often made this trip down Pine Creek to Jersey Shore, camping out each night. I have often heard him say that he never heard any kind of noise that he thought came from a panther--- and panthers were plentiful in this section in those days".
There are no mountain lions in pa. Have you ever heard the mating call of porcupines? To the uninformed they would swear it was a mountain lion.
