    I love that "collect what you love" was the first thing you mention. I also recently started bagging my books and when I got to the Men's Adventure section where lots of them were bought for a dollar, I stopped for a second and was like, does this even need a bag and then immediately I was like, hell yes it does, I love these books. Value is in the eye of the beholder.

    I started collecting paperbacks because of Star Trek. Quite a lot to see there with over 700 books so there's always something new to find.
    For me, I would find them at local thrift stores on occasion or at the local library for sale for (usually) under $1 apiece. There came a point where I was running into the hardcovers as well and picked them up but after a time, I realized space to store/display those was too much to figure out with living in an apartment.
    In the past few years, I started looking at the pre-Pocket Books Star Trek and found a couple decent online resources to look up information for those.

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Excellent, I still enjoy collecting the Star Trek books. TOS are my favourite ones but I'm collecting later. I too have tried to avoid the hardbacks. At one point they were churning out four books a month!

      @@JulesBurt I kinda miss that era of Trek publishing. I remember for a few years after Enterprise, we'd still get so many stories (like Titan and Vanguard) and I was disappointed when they slowed down the publishing for the so called "franchise fatigue"

      @paulmagrs2474 Ah, that's really out of nessisty as I have to keep the various collections in strict order so I can access books when needed. Plus my years as a bookseller in the 90's and early 2000's taught me the best shelving habits. I remember all the staff in the Plymouth Waterstones (where I worked for a few years) reading Never the Bride in proof. We really pushed that series. Excellent advice. Buy good bibliographies in your area of interest as there is a lot of information out there that isn’t on the web. To keep you on track it really helps to collect what you love and decide on your acceptable limits on condition. If you choose to be a condition freak you’ll pass up rare books that you may never get another chance to add to a collection.

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thanks Simon. That's my view on rare books. Even if they are in lower grade at least I have a copy. I might never know when another will turn up. Bibliographies are a must. I'm in the middle of reading a DAW one at the moment, it's pretty decent.

    What a fabulous and fascinating video Jules, I really enjoyed hearing about your backstory and your view on collecting, especially regarding books in less than perfect condition - they can always be upgraded! Take care, Jason.

    Would you say that since participating in all these online groups and secondhand sites is so useful its also very beneficial to have a nice comfortable desktop PC and office space in order to most comfortably use them? And yeah, Im bagging mine too as you know 🙂 it used to be very discouraging to me that paperbacks are a collectible that slowly burn and theres nothing we can do to stop it, then I thought, its not necessary to do the imposaible and stop that process, its enough juat to slow it enough that the copies we have will remain in the top 10% of the best condition ones out there. Essentially, just make sure ours are better than everyone elses. 🙂 Now I am looking into acid free craft boxes and dissicant packs as what I believe could be the most economical way to archive things. I am not sure about this, but although bookcases are most aesthetic and add aome practicality if one is reading the books, if the goal is purely archiving/preserving than archival boxes may be the best way but Im just guessing at this. Its quite amazing how little I know about something Ive done my whole life 🤷‍♂️

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Absolutely, the websites contain a lot of information and if you're looking at and admiring cover artwork, it looks best on a desktop pc. If you're there for a long time, definitely get a comfy chair! I think long-term, bagging books is a must. I wouldn't be too fussed about acid free boxes for now though. I am storing some of my collection in comic boxes now which can hold two layers of paperbacks spine on.

    • @UraniumMilk
      @UraniumMilk 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes I noticed you had comic boxes in your video, good idea. Also I was bagging up some modern comics and found the "current" size from Ultra-Pro a bit too tight so Ill be repurposing those for the larger paperbacks as you recommended. I wonder if they just sell polypropylene rolls like they do with saran wrap. I used to dabble in modular origami as a kid, I'm sure there must be a way to wrap a sheet around a book so that it creates its own flap.
