What a great presentation Adam! Thank you. Was validating to see I use the same resources as you although I gave more focus to Bookfinder over ViaLibri... I may give ViaLibri some time to compare benefits. I've been a collector and SMALL-TIME dealer for over 25 years, getting my start coordinating bookfairs in California for the California Book Fair Associates (Diane Neveu, Sol Grossman, Paul Hunt and Keith Burns). I never broke out into the higher status/standing of many other dealers, although I have built a decently unique (IMO) inventory as well as having handled some quite amazing pieces over the years. Looking forward to your next postings. Peace! Zack
I rescue and restore antique books Android donate them to my local library. I can usually find about10-20 pre1930s Hardcover books for FREE every week. Just check the dumpster behind and Half Price bookstore. They toss out hundreds of books every day. Just don't get caught. Its not illegal in the US but if they see you doing it they will start destroying the books before tossing them out. I go around 1am and just reach in and take a few that interest me. Best one thus far, 1912 Pinocchio with leather binding and breathtaking enamel cover.
@@RareBookBuyer any tips on how to restore resilience and strength to brittle pages that break when you try to turn a page? That’s the only thing I haven’t been able to figure out. I tried a humidor but it wasn’t very effective.
I am not sure if that is even possible once such deterioration sets in but I am not a paper conservator and that would be best directed to someone more knowledgeable in that area.
So what I’ve learned by using these resources you reference is that I’ve bought some books from book dealers that were definitely not worth what I paid for them. 🤦🏻 Live and learn. Thank you for the info!
There is a difference between fair market value (auction records) and retail as booksellers have to make money and there are many hidden expenses in business. One can only aim to make prices fair. There can also be subtle differentiating factors between copies that effect value. If you need any specific help evaluating a book reach out directly. And of course “worth” is not just monetary. Booklovers are worth more than the sum of their books.
Adam Weinberger Rare Book Buyer Thanks. That helps put things in perspective. I have to remember that the best “rule” for me is to only buy books that I love, for whatever reason. That way I’m satisfied no matter what!
@@RareBookBuyer this is so true! I love all of my antiquitarian books so much. I have one that is quite literally worth -5 dollars, but it was my first old book. My grandmother got it for me for 3 dollars at an antique shop. It is what got me started at age 14. I would sell it for 5 thousand dollars just because of its sentiment.
Hey Adam thank you for doing these videos, they are helpful. Also pay attention to your audio levels. It's all over the place, quiet then super loud, and then quiet again and then...
thank you....I have a book..The Adventures Of The Swiss Family Robinson....1863 bought it for $2.00 at a library in Belize.......has inscription and many plates
I am looking for information about Charles Theodore Middleton’s book A Complete System of Geography. On page 572 there is a drawing of a caravan of pilgrims heading to Mecca, but in the introduction to the drawing you notice an animal that looks like a bear, is it a bear? And why was there a bear in Egypt and in a caravan of pilgrims heading to Mecca for Hajj? If anyone has information, please let me know. Thank you.
Worth noting many dealers who buy at auctions double of triple the price of the book’s hammer price where the actual hammer price is all too often a trade price rather than the retail price when it appears for re-sale
Getting harder and harder to do I can assure you. Buy you can’t survive on the book business with expenses unless you at least double the price you paid.
i am looking for a book by morgan robertson called "the wreck of the titan or, futility" it does not have to be in good condition but has to be a 1st edition. i collect books that predict future events in a round-a-bout way.
Adam, are new print books, such as those higher end ones from Folio Society for example able to become collectable? I mean they print maybe 500-1000 of these and usually once they sell out, the price doubles or even triples on ebay.. how will they be in 20 years?
A very intriguing synaptic overview of a singular hobby of mine. Sure that very little I own would rate with a collector. The loan comments are of interests, as I've read numerous places of subscription services that were invited in the English colonies in the America's, that men of some means might have access to things then in print. Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia the most recent read. Thank you again.
Thanks so much Adam. Is there a website for looking up bookplates by image? I cannot seem to find a specific one, but the name pops up on the web as being three different locations/ individuals. Thanks again for all your videos
I have got 1 copy of 'Chambers Tweintieth Century Dictionary', Published by 'Allied Publishers' and Preface by William Geddie''. But there is no year of publishing on the book. It is almost 75 years old book. If anybody can please guide me What Sale Value it has in the Old/Vintage and Rare Books market. The book is definitely not in bad shape though it has not also very good condition. Please also guide if some International customer approaches me then how to get the money and how to send the book out of India. Thanks.
@@RareBookBuyer Thank you Adam, you at least bothered to reply and that too decently though it was a bad information for me. I have book 'COMPLETE WORKS of William Shakespeare'. It is signed on the cover by William Shakespeare' and I have verified the signatures from the link 'www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=shakespeareoxfordfellowship.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/signatures-feat.png&imgrefurl=shakespeareoxfordfellowship.org/the-shakespeare-signatures-deconstructed/&docid=6f1H2XEOn8hB4M&tbnid=s6lP9GU3AsyapM:&vet=1&w=500&h=330&hl=en-GB&source=sh/x/im#h=330&imgdii=2mzhTwcQtRmIKM:&vet=1&w=500'. But I am confused that how can they be Shakespeare's Signatures as he died in the year 1616 and according to Google the book came out in 1623. I have also seen the same cover on some other website.while Googling. Please tell if they are the real signatures. If yes, then this book is definitely somewhere around 400 years old. What price it can fetch me if I proceed further to sell it. I only know that it is in our family since 3 generations.
If you want evaluations, kindly send photos to webuyrarebooks@gmail.com. It is hard to evaluate booka through the TH-cam comment section. Generally complete works of Shakespeare are not rare but I can’t know what edition you have without seeing photos.
All of this is pretty interesting I have a fairly extensive book collection with a lot of stuff from the late 19th or early 20th century and come across a lot because my family runs and Auction Company here in New Mexico and we often do estate auctions

thank you, you have saved me some money, I was going to pay one of those online services but I can find all the information I need in via libri. Im curious, what is the usual rate for selling old books. (Im the person with my dads Egyptology books, he was a student of Dr. Edgerton at the University of Chicago.)
Not sure what you mean by the usual rate. Some dealers take commissions depending on the quality and quantity - these fees can vary. Except for very high end single volumes or small collections I tend to stay away from those arrangements and prefer outright purchases. I should do a rare book video on bookseller margins- these tend to look high for individual books but fall sharply when unsold inventory costs and other business expenses factor in.

Unfortunately many 20th century dictionaries like this despite being fun and interesting tend to have little collectible value.
