I once repaired an AMD proc with 40% of the pins bent, with an elementary school ruler and 10 minutes work. While with only 3 pins bent on an Intel motherboard I still can't get the second memory slot to work.

In a few years those skills will be useless as game streaming takes over. Game streaming is freaking awesome already and I am pretty sure in a few yrs it would be so great there would be no need to buy gaming hardware, thus no need for game hardware review channels.
Ravi M game streaming is NOT awesome already. You must not watch many of Linus’ videos. He recently reviewed all game streaming services available(xcloud, stadia, etc). He concluded, like many other tech content channels, that game steaming is bearable at best. There is still NOTICEABLE lag. Which means competitive gaming is still years and years away. Even IF those hurdles where gone today, unless you are 10 years old, there are MANY GPU and CPU intensive workloads across MANY fields and hobbies that will still require a descent desktop setup. CAD work, video editing, being a content streamer, just to name a few. Things remote game streaming services will NEVER touch. On top of that remote VR rendering is practically impossible.

In the rare event that you actually do manage to break a pin on a AMD CPU you can still take it to a jeweller and have them repair it good as new for a few tenners.
Anything short of that is pretty easy to repair yourself with a bit of care.

Awesome, I never considered that either, but that kind of repair does seem to be right in their wheelhouse. Any electronics-specific aspects of chip repair such as using static mats could be figured out fairly quickly and they now have a potentially lucrative new aspect to their business. Now I wanna find some local jewelers and ask if they do much business repairing small electronics.

My non-techy friend wanted to "clean the dust off his fan" so he "removed" it aka ripped out the entire cpu cooler WITH THE AMD CPU STILL ATTACHED then cleaned it and just PRESSED IT BACK ON without opening the socket or anything. Then he asked me why the pc wasn't booting up. I was in pain whilst he told me what he did, andas expected half the pins on the cpu were bent

Pentium III in slot were great, it had double cache memory and much better heat sink than was standard in that time. But I heard that problem with this is too long connection between cpu and ram.

If they had comparable cores to Intel at the time, more cores would have been a godsend.

Yeah, it's almost impossible to bend an AMD pin when simply inserting your CPU, but it's entirely possible to destroy Intel pins when trying to reinstall a CPU when the motherboard is installed in a case. There's no contest when it comes to durability.
Yeah. I lied to myself and thought the LGAs were spring pins. TBA looking at some of the LGAs in the video I almost prefer to stick with my PGAs. Year's of experience with them and never bent a pin to the point of destruction.

@@jinuuoh Don't forget that AMD doesn't do their CPU themselves, they just design the chips. Intel however make their own, so they have to develop everything. Also, don't forget that Intel's 14nm is not equals to like TSMC's 14nm. Even tho they have a big delay against GF/TSMC now, they used to be very good.

However, I use each chip for what it is good for. I do not use a Civic to haul a tractor on a trailer nor would I use a pickup to go around the corner just to get some milk. Each processor chines in a different way. Where did I say I wanted AMD to die?

Note: AMD motherboards in theory are made to last for longer period of time, with newer refresh CPUs keeping the compatibility. Enough reason to make the pins on the motherboard more ever-lasting than the CPUs counterpart.

Clearly someone who doesn't understand or know anything about architectures. That's like saying almost all games are the same because they were programmed in c/c++... Yes they're all based on the x86 architecture, but massive changes have been made to x86 since it's invention. There's been massive leaps in performance because of the features added to x86 over the past few decades. I started studying architecture design in college because it pays so well, I quickly abandoned it because it's insanely hard; my understanding of it is insanely basic and even I understand why simply creating a completely new architecture with every CPU would bankrupt a company.

All computers must be driven by a single complex construct that cannot be separated in equal or different parts...
Ah yes, I remember bending my pins when installing my R5 3600. That was a bad day.
I had a customer who straight up didn't lift the retention arm for the CPU socket and then mounted the cooler anyway. To top it off he put the Ryzen badge on the CPU IHS. He had a whole lot of bent pins. I fixed it for him tho!

I had a ryzen 3600 cpu come with a broken b450 motherboard. I sent it back to scan 3 times and trying to reseat it and send it back and foward it got damaged so it got sent to the company 6 weeks at a time. and off to AMD and back again for about 3 months before they eventually realised the CPU was goosed from the start and sent me brand new stuff and not had a problem since. Not sure If I would ever buy AMD again after that. The 3600 is good and mines does 3828 on cinebench r20 but left a bitter taste in my mouth

Yeah, you learn to appreciate the old days of pins on the CPU when you damage a $1300 dual socket server motherboard while trying to swap out $200 CPUs for $250 CPUs due to a project at work. Yeah, I did that, back in 2008. I've hated LGA with a passion ever since.

@@webforder4201 Which is exactly what happened, smashed over a dozen pins in a nice dual line across most of the socket. I was changing a E5-2603 for a E5-2609v2, and dropped the 2603 shortly after picking it up. Those are hard to get out of the socket, especially for those of us with hard, calloused skin on our fingers, and I just was not able to get a good hold on the chip.
I told my boss about the possibility when he asked for the swap, and how hard it was to get a hold on the processor, but he said to go ahead. I felt horrible that it happened, but he never held it against me.
When I put LGA chips in a motherboard I own, that is where they stay. I never take them out.
I've always wondered if something like a pogo pin array might be better, like, spring loaded gold plated ball bearings in the socket, and then there isnt any pins to get damaged on either side. Though I'm sure it would take up slightly more space.
Now have switched to LGA, that didn't take long.
Before I knew much about Threadripper and EPYC processors, I was wondering how on earth the pins would go into the socket without bending them.

And it is cheaper than intel's way but honestly, it can go both ways for both for pins.

Michael Ramos I bent multiple pins on my ryzen 7 2700x, and one even snapped off... I was able to buy a $5 amd cpu from years ago and steal a pin using my heat gun for the broken one and carefully align all the others without even a magnifying glass, just a good eye and steady hands ... that’s a $5 fix compared to just buying a whole new motherboard

I once bent the pins on my 8350, spent 30 minutes bending them back with a pen. Worked like a dream for 5 years after that. PGA is a great technology

The only real consumer side downside of AMDs solution is the possibility of those pins getting ripped out when replacing the fan or thermal paste.

Which is why the advice has always been run the CPU for a little while to heat it up. Then remove the heat-sink (twist and lift). The fan itself is attached to the heat-sink so removal should be easy anyway.

It doesn't matter whenever you have PGA or LGA motherboard... You can still support the same socket on the CPU throughout the years... Intel used LGA775 for 2 generations so did Amd with Threadripper

@@divoulos5758 Yeah that's true. But in my experience i aways saw dead motherboards due to bent pins and never saw bent cpu pins. And the cpu pins are easy to fix and so take some abuse, the motherboard ones i cant even think of a way i would fix them without risking too much to rip them.
But yeah both lga and pga have their own advantages.
I've built probably over 100 PCs with AMD CPUs, never had a problem with a bent pin.
But I managed to smoke one of the most expensive CPUs I ever handled by not removing the foil underneath the heat sink...😣
Would it be so much to ask for AMD to add a locking frame like Intel has? Removing a cooler from an AMD chip often runs the risk of ripping the CPU off the socket.
I recently actually did that because past me used a touch bit too much thermal paste and did NOT remove the cooler when the processor was warm. If you know what you're doing, a bracket isn't really necessary, but it is nice to have.
Remember building a PC for a friend recently and while I was inserting the CPU, he got impatient and snatched it from my hand. He then dropped it while bending around 27 pins and made me fix his mistake. Shocked the thing still works.

I remember bending a whole bunch of pins on an old amd CPU (10-ish years ago). I just took some pincers to it and it served me well for a couple of years.

Lifehack: if u bent some pins and they completely came off during your repair attempts (shouldn't happen as they are quite tough but it can), just put them into proper holes of the socket and slap your CPU over as normal, it will work.
What if I don't know where the missing pin is?

If it has been lost, theoretically you can use any metal thing of proper lenght although i didn't try that so cannot suggest. If we speak about position, there is a full grid of pins/holes without free space, so it should be easy to compare cpu area with socket holes and find a proper hole for a pin or few

@@TohaZhirnij it should be done at their own risk btw have to say. It worked for me with am3+ phenom, cases may differ, f.e. am4 holes may be deeper or pin won't contact cpu by other reasons.

imagine in the future where getting a epyc processor that has a million pins today would seem like a dinosaur with their consumer level chips having billions of pins.
There's a company here in the UK that offer an awesome insurance policy limited to 28 days after delivery that covers accidental breakage of any components for a fairly normal fee, I think last time I ordered from them I bought £2,000 worth of gear and the insurance only cost an extra £30, so if you do have a disastrous accident with £1000 worth of CPU you're not massively out of pocket and don't need to cry yourself to sleep at night

Unless you plan on making multiple subnets at home... there's really no point in a managed switch. There's typically no reason to have multiple subnets either, as a lot of home use stuff relies on network discovery, which typically doesn't transcend a single network
There's no speed advantage of a managed switch. You're often paying much more just for that privilege. So unless you need subnets... don't bother with managed switches, :)

The most common reasons I've seen is when you need VLAN's, either to split your network (typically for isolating crappy devices, like hikvision cameras) or if you want to do any kind of router HA, as this is fairly easily done with VLAN's.
I'm not saying everyone needs managed switches, but the idea of these videos would be to explain what they are and, why you might need them.

I didn't even know this was an issue until it was too late. Of course, I still should have known to be more careful. That wraith prism mounting mechanism really didn't want to come loose though, so I guess I got pretty careless trying to get it off.
When I recently replaced my stock cooler with a beefy air cooler, I was so afraid of pulling the cpu out. I just ran a stress test before and let the paste heat up. Then unscrewed the cooler keeping pressure and then twisted gently, then was able to remove it just fine. I was very relieved when it went smoothly
This exactly. It happens a lot more often than people think and most people don't even know it can happen. When it does happen, they don't know how to handle it and end up damaging their CPU.
Don't pull or pry, twist back and forth to break up the goop. Like loosening a jar, NOT popping the top off a beer bottle.
This works well even on old or cold thermal compound. The pin array is much stronger than the thermal compound if you twist. (And the pins are seated into the socket.) If you pry the reverse is often true.
Back in the day I bent some pins when I accidentally dropped the cpu on the floor, and then accidentally stepped on it, barefoot, on the pins.. ouchie
1:19 they are!! I bent 3 pins on my ryzen 5 3500x but successfully rebent them into place and somehow the CPU still works 😂. I sweated a lot that day ...

We are supposed to store the CPU on antistatic foam before installing it so there is no way to bend the pin. Also, pins and contact couple have a smallest inductance
Man I only found this out last year - when I first bought a laptop with a socketed CPU (something else I didn't know existed until last year), I also bought a CPU to upgrade it - when it arrived I was like "what were are the pins?????" haha
I bent the pins on the corner of my Ryzen 7. It took me two hours with the macro-lens setting on my phone camera and a needle to straighten them out. When I put the cpu in my computer and turned it on, I got life, thankfully.
I hate pins. Costly mistake if you mess up.
Mechanical pencils are great for fixing bent pins. You just shove the pin into the hole and you can precicely bend it back. After that I found that a thin blade of some sort is a good tool to fine tune the pin.
I have destroyed my r 2700x too while I tried to put the f***ing amd stock cooler on it. I was unable to fix it, some pins broke and i have put it in a case by the other computer- stuff, so that I have to remember, what an idiot I was and that I never use the shity amd -cooler anymore

I used to have an AMD Phenom II X4 965....it got used in several different CPU builds. I remember later on in its life, around 2013, I bent the crap out of the pins accidentally while it was being transported a long distance in my luggage. Took me a good 4 hours but I bent all the pins back with tweezers and it still worked fine lol.
To this day I am shocked it still worked like a charm lol

I do think Linus is giving AMD a way to bad mark for damaging, In my experience you have to be very forcefull to bend the pins on their CPU. were as you can almost bend the pins on the intel mobo's by blowing on them
my old fx-6300 fell from about a meter on hard floor, ON THE PINS. i dont even know how people manage to bend those.

@@Flaxify it's a good thing that AMD pins can easily be bent back into place.. certainly not as easily as an LGA socket. I once also had some pretty good luck with an old athlon 64 system that wasn't booting, the CPU had been removed before I got to it and somehow had a pin ripped off, put said pin in the corresponding hole in the socket and hey presto, POSTing again.

Usually, you just need to align the pins to the holes, push it in a bit, then let it drop.
One more perk of LGA. The metallic bracket on top of the IHS prevents coolers with particularly sticky thermal paste from pulling the chip right out of the socket. If you aren't aware of and ready for this, you could have a nasty surprise next time you re-paste your chip and don't take the necessary precautions.
