As proud as I am not to be alone, it pains me to see how, even now, this game and its serviceable sequel still wallow in obscurity. In my mind, I am biased due to the fact that it was one of the few (Read: 10) games I grew up with alongside the likes of Fallout: New Vegas, Mortal Kombat 9, the later THPS and THUGs, and pre-Ghosts CoD titles but there's so much to love about the game. Would love to see you review the second game, as well as nudging you that there is a 'DJ Hero Customs' community out there that have created over 100+ mixes to play on emulators/modded consoles. Glad to see someone make a video about this important game. This was my entire childhood right here. Solely responsible for my taste in music today. Thank you!
I played this so much that at one point I was ranked #1 on the leaderboards with specific song for DJ Hero 2 on the Nintendo Wii. Still one of my greatest gaming accomplishments

THIS IS SO SWEET. THANK YOU. I am very happy you enjoyed this video :) I would love to do more. They just take so much time, and I currently don’t have much more to give atm. Currently working on music. Hopefully when things start to finish up I’ll get back to this! Again, thank you for your sweet comment :) And WHAT IS YOUR HOMETOWN??
@@BathroomGamers that’s fair!! i know making a video like this takes a lot of time, so i don’t blame you for that. It’s tough!! Also i meant that as a metaphor, I’ve never even set foot in the US lol
Although dj hero 1 has an amazing song selection, dj hero 2 i think has it 100 times better. Not to mention that the visuals look a lot better as well. It also has an almost story mode (empire mode) which is sooooo mucb fun.
you absolutely have to play DJ Hero 2, it literally takes every aspect of DJ Hero and improves upon it as well as adding SOOO much more to the overall experience. If DJ Hero was to be considered an 8 or 9 out of 10, the sequel is the closest thing to a perfect 10. The only issues that I have with the game (which are somewhat minor albeit) is that there seem to be less mixes made by other DJs and the tracklist if FAR more mainstream than the first game (which isn't necessarily the worst thing either because the mixes are even better than before) I'd love to tell you more about the game but I feel like it'd be so much better for you to experience yourself. Great video btw :) , definitely brought back a lot of nostalgia on the many times I've played this game.
I picked up dj hero a couple months ago and it shocked me how good the game was im so surprised people aren't more focused on making a dj hero pc clone
People are! there are dj Hero custom songs, and a clone called DJ Engine. DJ hero 2 is amazing, and DJ Engine was cancelled (at update 1.6 being its last update) but is being ported by its dev to fret smasher as a mode in fret smasher!
THE MAN IS BACK! AND I ONLY JUST FOUND OUT!!!! IMMA CRY RIGHT NOW!!!! DUDE!!! AHHHH!!!!! THIS WAS MUCH NEEDED!!!! I ALWAYS WANTED A DJ HERO VIDEO!!!! I DIDN'T KNOW YOU WERE ACTUALLY GONNA DO IT!!! ALSO I'M GLAD YOU'RE OKAY!!
Must be cool having a sister to game with. My siblings weren’t into games (except, ironically, being obsessed with Rock Band, but I was in the Middle East in the military during that phase)
Cool vid, you definitely explained pretty well, and i definitely can agree that all the songs are incredible to vibe to, with the amount of personality packed within it as a whole, and the amount of effort the whole team put into it, it’s an incredible game, and it’s quite a shame that it wasn’t as successful as it could’ve been do to all the other guitar themed games out at the time, and especially listening to people like jazzy Jeff’s 2009 thought’s about the game, and it’s really a bummer that this game isn’t played by many, cause for me it’ll probably be a big favourite for awhile anyway, and heck, I feel very inspired to potential start dj mixing, all because of a game I found that I thought could be fun, and how it open me up to a whole new side of me with a passion that I would’ve never known about.
Thanks for making this, you're unironically preserving rhythm game history. Idk if you know about the present dj hero community, ppl are even making custom tracks.
I wish DJ and Guitar Hero would come back. They're still very fun to play now but I'm itching for new content from both. It sucks that the DLC stores are closed, they had a lot of great songs to add variety. Rock Band however is still a thing. I never really liked Rock Band but I'm sure a new game will come out in the next few years.
I stumbled upon your video randomly and oh boy that was a journey. I was crazy about Guitar Hero 1 and 2 back in the day (ps2), but I didn't have the money to buy the guitars and played on the controllers, and I got very good at it. When DJ hero came out I knew I would need to buy the periferal to play and never got interested. Your video made me want to play this game so bad lol. My brother still have a 360, maybe if I manage to find the kit with the game I could give it a try. Really well put together video, my dude. Subscribed.
I’m more than happy you enjoyed the video, thank you. I hope one day y’all will stumble on some DJ Hero stuff (or even Guitar Hero controllers) and play together: that would be rad. Take care 🤘
The arrows pointing in the same direction was supringly easy for me, but a few songs where you had to physically break your fingers just to scratch the button closest to the slidding fadder always killed me.
I remember playing it ONCE when I was young as hell years ago. And it stuck with me for years and the love resurfaced when I saw a mix of waters of Nazareth and Megalovania and it went so hard that I wanted it. Some how my mom found copies of 1 & 2 for dj hero and a working ps3 and I've been playing ever sonce
Bro i have the ost on loop at the shop that dj qbert battle is the shih like u have the goat of scratching as a boss reminds me of the guitar hero 3 boss battles
If I recall correctly, when it comes to the crossfader, it's considered to be center set even if you're just a little bit right to the far left position or vice versa. This makes spikes much easier. It does not have to be in the center click position or anywhere near it. I had friends that were DJs growing up so this game was not at all unfamiliar to me like it was to many. This was a such a great game in the rhythm game golden age of the 2000s, with a truly unique gameplay loop and a fantastic soundtrack. It's truly a shame that it's largely been forgotten.
I started playing this game at such a young age to not even understand what half of the stuff even does in this game, that was 2010, now it’s 2020 and still playing, not to mention my dream came true once I heard customs where a thing and a discord community 🤯. Im only getting better and not to long ago fced one of the hardest mixes in dj hero 2. I love this game so much
Fced one of the hardest mixes? You sure came a long way! From not understanding what the heck the game is doing (like myself) to fcing mixes and playing customs?! Awesome trajectory. Thank you for sharing
Something you forgot to mention is that you can reorder any setlist so you can play however you want you aren't stuck with the order they set for you it's completely customizable. And you also don't have to play the whole set every time if there's a song you can't beat just move it to the top of the list so you don't have to play a bunch of songs before that one. And for those wondering DJ hero 2 is also good they add in a few new features but in terms of feel and aesthetic it's pretty bare bones, the mixes I wish were done a slightly better sometimes they're a little jarring but overall a decent experience and the new features add a whole new level of complexity.
i only every played the demo of dj hero like 10 years ago at a store and i loved it. i wish i can play it. i hope a modding scene comes around for this game or it somehow gets a revival
definitely underrated! guitar hero and the rock scene was perfect for the early 2000s, and it completely overshadowed DJ Hero. Now, in 2022, rap and remixes are dominating the music scene, and this game would have been perfect for this era. Luckily, the older consoles and DJ Hero can both be found online for very cheap prices, so we can still enjoy it!
I forgot to say but you should definitely play the sequel. I think it's probably on the whole better than 1, just tighter made and with better polish. It also makes the samples no longer just generic "DJ" sounds but makes it unique to each track, which is a great touch. Return of the Mack/Shutterbug is an incredible mix.
When you said you hadn't played DJ Hero 2 I was super disappointed. Many of the issues you have with the first game were actually fixed in DJ Hero 2, and most people in the modern community actually hacked the original tracks into the second game to take advantage of the improved engine. Not to mention that it also has extra modes you were wanting like DJ Battles. You should definitely give it a try!
I'm very excited to play the 2nd game soon: knowing these things have been fixed/added now makes me real excited. Maybe I'll make a video on it eventually; who knows
I'll be honest... I wasn't even aware of this game's existence prior to discovering its' controller from a setup guide for Spin Rhythm XD (which btw you really should check out! It looks like a sort of a soul successor to this game and I'm already approaching 1K hours of playtime on it. It's in early access on Steam) and the Groundhog chart for it. But looking back on this, it does look interesting to play. Maybe I'll try to find a used controller for this game or... try to simulate it with my real DJ turntable (if that's even possible?). Great video :)
Rhythm games should have become a platform and I think they would have survived. If the game was f2p and then added song packs every 3 to 6 months and selling the guitar, drums and turn table with a song pack code would have allowed the manufacturers and stores to moderate demand rather than having massive excess stock taking up retail space. Guitar hero live kinda went this way but instead sold the game with the guitar again and then charged for plays of songs rather than letting us own our songs, it felt like Activision knew there was a small dedicated fan base and they tried to milk them for all they're worth while not fully believing in the project. Great review, I personally love the dj hero games and highly recommend them. Dj hero 1 is more classic stuff and dj hero 2 is more modern/dance focused tracks but it's just as good. If you are in the UK you can get a turn table and both games on Wii/Wii U for £5 or £8 on 360 from CEX. It's absolutely worth that price 10x over, trust me just give it a go.
This is a game that doesn't get enough respect... this game was soooo underrated i literally play this game all my life... if i can find this game i would play it to this day... i think Activision should either make another one or make a remaster for it. This game should get its flowers💯
One of my favorite aspects of this game is that the song used for the easiest chart in the game, the tutorial, is also the song with the hardest chart in the whole game. A song that progressively taunts and berates the listener who wants to be a DJ, which sounds funny in the tutorial, becomes absolutely threatening in the hardest difficulty. Groundhog (Beat Juggle) is the GOAT
You’re definitely right about it being released at the wrong time. Given the popularity of tools like Ultimate Vocal Remover now, Mashups are much more well-known now.
We found a DJ Hero controller at goodwill for 10$, i was able to emulate the Wii version and the soundtrack is amazing. I also tested 2 and the soundtrack... Is not for me lol, i have no idea how that happened but its missing all the artists and songs from 1 that i enjoy, Beastie Boys, Gorillaz, Daft Punk, maybe I haven't found them yet but from what ive seen the soundtrack in 2 is stopping me from fully playing it
I actually just got this game off of eBay a year ago, as I always wanted it as a kid when it first came out but never got it. Still stuck on medium but working my way up. Also… I hate that f***ing crossfader.
I got 2 cooys of each DJ hero game with 3 controllers for it. And 1 old ass ps3 because im too lazy to see if itll work on my PC for the PS3 emulator. I plan to buy the wii dj hero controller one day so i can play the DJ hero customs songs on PC.
You mention near the end of the video, how DJ Hero could "thrive" in the indie scene if it released today, with constant song updates and stuff. "Similar to Beat Saber" That's honestly, exactly what Guitar Hero has done. Over the years, we've had different Guitar Hero clones on PC. They didn't start out amazing, with the likes of basic 2D clones with a top down view camera. They sucked, but they were functional. Then we got Frets on Fire, initially kinda crap but also worked, and it eventually got way better over the years of updates and fan-updates. Phase Shift was one that was pretty damn good. It went for more of a Rock Band aesthetic as opposed to Guitar Hero like previous clones. It felt the closest to the real thing for a while. Then came the current top tier clone, Clone Hero. Once you get your audio and video calibration set up, it feels like the official games. Helped by the fact that it straight up ripped models and graphics from the real Guitar Hero. But there's even a few mods you can grab to make it look like other GH or RB games. Add on to that the fact that you can download all the official necks/highways from other GH games, make your own necks, use image OR video backgrounds... And you have about as close to the original games as you're gonna get outside of modding a PC copy of Guitar Hero 3. AND you can modify it to look how you want to some extent. I personally have a semi-transparent neck akin to Rock Band, but with a tiny rainbow strip down each side. My hit flames match the color of the note, instead of just being orange. And everything related to the light blue Star Power has been changed to a pinkish-purple. Clone Hero is still getting regular song updates. People make customs constantly. Just searching for "Clone Hero Chart Previous" on TH-cam and sorting by upload date, you'll see quite a few over the past few weeks, probably some today even. And over on customsongscentral.com, they regularly release full setlists of songs. Then there's the Chorus website that people post songs to all the time, and the recently released "Bridge" app that links to Chorus to let you auto-download and extract new songs. Guitar Hero is still plenty alive thanks to Clone Hero.
But he's talking about DJ Hero live service, with the turntable controller and electronic music. A revived guitar hero live service, isn't that, im sorry to say. The games are totally different in vibe, music, and gameplay
Yes. Now go buy a PS3 DJ Hero controller, PS3, jailbreak it and join the fan discord for custom songs. Search custom dj hero songs on TH-cam to find the discord ;)
well fuser was 2020 dj hero but they shut it down as well by not releasing any more music dlc content so that console players wouldn’t have any more new content for the game and apparently pc players were Still playing it after that cause there were mods where u could insert ur own songs in it then after that no other dj hero or fuser games was released or mentioned
About the end of the video: Mate, really though. There is a community all about custom songs and modding the game, have you looked for ir? There is a Discord and all.
Same could be said about the "dead guitar genre". Clone Hero on PC is pretty damn popular, and there's people regularly making new songs every single day. Even then, Rock Band 4 (or the Rock Band Network) is still getting new DLC every so often. The genre didn't really "die", it just kinda stalled a bit on consoles due to no new games releasing. A large chunk of the player base moved to games like Frets on Fire, Phase Shift, and Clone Hero on PC.
DJ Hero 1 & 2 is so criminally underrated. The OSTs are just pure *BANGERS* and it's so fun once you get the rhythm of it and start going with hype ass fuck flows

DJ Hero was something I really didn't except and I some how remembered it throughout my entire life

I am also very sad about this channel, because it feels like i just found out someone in my hometown had my same exact interests and moved out years before i came back to visit my parents, i would love to hear more about what you think about things and it seems you have decided to not make more videos, or you moved on to something else and whatever you’re doing, i hope this finds you! this is a great video.
FORGOT TO SAY BTW WOULD LOVE TO HEAR UR MUSIC i'm very curious :D @@BathroomGamers
You’ve hyped me a lot: thank you :)
Except the first game had a much better soundtrack and grand master flash tutorial. Overall it was a much cooler game imo.
been waiting all day for this
Honored
I'M CRYING TOO! AAAAAHHHH!! THANK YOU FOR THE KIND WORDS! I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE VIDEO TOO!!!!!! THANK YOU AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHGGGGG!!!!!
I'm glad there's a video on this game because honestly it was so fun
Must be cool having a sister to game with. My siblings weren’t into games (except, ironically, being obsessed with Rock Band, but I was in the Middle East in the military during that phase)
Worst Case, we wait for DJ Hero to make it's way to Clone Hero for Mod Support/etc.
Wow, this video was really well made. Great work! DJ Hero is total bliss. Too bad it didn't have much success. Can't understand it
Thank you for the positive comment! And I agree, Tis too bad it didn’t work out.
Take care 🤘
Playing this game with my 6 year old lately, liked it in 2009 love it now
The intro sketch was funny lol. And i never played DJ Hero but it looks like it’s really hard to master
It takes some time to get used to. And I’m glad you enjoyed it 🤘
The arrows pointing in the same direction was supringly easy for me, but a few songs where you had to physically break your fingers just to scratch the button closest to the slidding fadder always killed me.
Excellent review, man. It’s good to see you again.
💜🤘
He always comes back
Something you forgot to mention is that you can reorder any setlist so you can play however you want you aren't stuck with the order they set for you it's completely customizable. And you also don't have to play the whole set every time if there's a song you can't beat just move it to the top of the list so you don't have to play a bunch of songs before that one. And for those wondering DJ hero 2 is also good they add in a few new features but in terms of feel and aesthetic it's pretty bare bones, the mixes I wish were done a slightly better sometimes they're a little jarring but overall a decent experience and the new features add a whole new level of complexity.
i really like your videos and your personality, please keep making more videos!!
The man is back
i only every played the demo of dj hero like 10 years ago at a store and i loved it. i wish i can play it. i hope a modding scene comes around for this game or it somehow gets a revival
definitely underrated! guitar hero and the rock scene was perfect for the early 2000s, and it completely overshadowed DJ Hero. Now, in 2022, rap and remixes are dominating the music scene, and this game would have been perfect for this era. Luckily, the older consoles and DJ Hero can both be found online for very cheap prices, so we can still enjoy it!
I burned thru 3 turntables before they shut down the servers
Hi George! Great to see you back!
This deserves more views. This game was underrated.
The intro with the doggo killed me 😂
When you said you hadn't played DJ Hero 2 I was super disappointed.
@@BathroomGamers i can vouch for the customs community, but you need an emulator/modded console
@@BathroomGamers Yo, that would be so cool.
B boy on psp was dope af you had to use combos similar to fighting games to pull off complex moves and the soundtrack was awesome
12:38 - Thats why I modded mine and turned it into 2 buttons.
Wait so everyone's crossfader is loose? I just got my turntable and thought my crossfader was broken
Great video :)
beautiful video, would love to hear how you feel about djh2's more polished mechanics
This pops up just as I get a DJ Hero set with both DJ Hero 1 and 2? What a coincidink
THAT’S RAD. Enjoy the games :)
this is the Final Episode Of BathroomGamers This is The End oh Lord Have Mercy
Dj hero is the absolute goat. I completed the second game Expert 5 starred every song. I need to complete the first.
This video should have so many more views
WHERE IS PT 2 OF THE HISTORY OF GUITAR HERO AND ROCK BAND
lucked out today and found this and it's sequel in a secondhand shop. now all i need is a controller
He knows about the existence of DJ Hero 2, right?
if you'd watch the whole video you'd know the answer to that lmao (it's yes)
Damn George you ate good with this one.
Bro been cooking up a phat shit in the interim.
Let our boy cook.
🤘
I got the turntable recently and I've been playing it on Dolphin (Wii emulator)
It's awesome.
Also, there is actually a modding scene altho most charts are expert only :
One of my favorite aspects of this game is that the song used for the easiest chart in the game, the tutorial, is also the song with the hardest chart in the whole game.
A song that progressively taunts and berates the listener who wants to be a DJ, which sounds funny in the tutorial, becomes absolutely threatening in the hardest difficulty.
Groundhog (Beat Juggle) is the GOAT
Whens the next video coming out??
💜
Loved DJ Hero 2. To this day very disappointed there wasn't a third. I'd buy it immediately.
You’re definitely right about it being released at the wrong time. Given the popularity of tools like Ultimate Vocal Remover now, Mashups are much more well-known now.
Thank you so much for this review of a underrated game. 😁😁
Awesome video. Time to dust off my dj hero turntable.
I honestly still play dj hero 2 and I honestly love playing it
Who are your favorite playable DJs in the series? I personally like Daft Punk in DJH1, and DJ Q-Bert in DJH2
Also…
I hate that f***ing crossfader.
"Similar to Beat Saber"
That's honestly, exactly what Guitar Hero has done.
Need a video about DJ Hero 2
Yo i never knew euphoria auto crossfaded for you 🤯
Yes. Now go buy a PS3 DJ Hero controller, PS3, jailbreak it and join the fan discord for custom songs.
Search custom dj hero songs on TH-cam to find the discord ;)
I made 2 videos on this game so far and I love it
DJ Hero 1+2 are the Heroes of all time, Band Hero is directly under
This video is quite quaint, they don't make 'em like these anymore
Can you do rock band games ranked from worst to best?
well fuser was 2020 dj hero but they shut it down as well by not releasing any more music dlc content so that console players wouldn’t have any more new content for the game and apparently pc players were Still playing it after that cause there were mods where u could insert ur own songs in it then after that no other dj hero or fuser games was released or mentioned
Now im waiting for DJ Hero 3 ⏲️
never haha. Custom songs and fret smasher DJ support are the closest thing we will get to DJH2. Maybeee DJH 2.1, but that's pushing it lol
🔥
Tap tap was my thing lol
😎
TAP TAP REVENGE MENTIONED HOLY SHIT
About the end of the video:
Mate, really though.
A large chunk of the player base moved to games like Frets on Fire, Phase Shift, and Clone Hero on PC.
i just learned about this channel from this video and there hasn't been a upload in three years, is he okay ?
