- This video is created to answer questions on how to hold modern diatonic lyre and be able to play using two hands. The purpose is to show the learner that it is possible to play the lyre freely and with less tension using simple tips and some playing adjustments. I hope that this video helps many lyre beginners get a good foundation for playing smoothly, freely and with ease.

Great video! Now these are handy tips! I've always wondered what was the most comfortable way to play the lyre with both hands. Propping the legs up really helps ease a lot of tension.
I just wanted to say thank you for putting so much into this channel and giving everyone such amazing resources on learning the lyre harp! I'm 29 and always wanted to play an instrument, but was too scared (& lacking in self-confidence) to try almost my entire life (and until recently was never able to relax and just do something enjoyable for the fun of it outside video games--and most of them do guide you with a specific goal you're working towards).
A few months ago I finally made the semi-impulse buy of a 16-string lyre because I wanted enough range to play stuff I liked, but not too many notes to feel intimidated. The week or two I waited for the lyre to arrive, I spent just pouring through your videos to help me understand the very very basics of music (I'd only played keyboard for a class in high school over ten years ago and even then it never went into much on details--like what chords are, other than being multiple notes at once), and I'm frequently coming back for refreshers and all the other resources you've created/shared but I decided to look at later when I've gotten more practice in.
I've learned SO MUCH from you and your channel. I love playing my lyre to wind down every night after work, and it has helped me tremendously in finding this meditative, peaceful, and stress-reducing hobby. (And me playing has gotten my fiance back into learning the guitar so he can have a hobby he can pursue with what little space we currently live in--and that makes me so happy.) I can honestly say that aside from Animal Crossing (games), this is the first hobby/activity I've EVER had in my life that wholly completely allows me to just be in the moment.
You are an excellent teacher, and I really can't emphasize that enough. (I've literally went on and on to my mom and fiance about how helpful and amazing your content is.) I love how you explain each thing multiple ways and then slowly/gently guide viewers through the exercise multiple times because it really helps force me to slow down and really take the time to learn it. And I can't thank you enough. You and your channel have made a huge difference in my life.

Great advice, thank you! I just bought a 16 string lyre a couple of days ago, and I love it. However, I’ve noticed that the lowest string and the highest two strings are inaccessible from the back. Is this common/normal, and is there a way around this?
This is normal. We just need to be creative and get the hand that can access these strings be the one playing them. Once you find an approach that works for you it becomes almost automatic 😉

I am looking into the lyre because it is an instrument I can play with only one hand. Unfortunately I had a stroke a few years ago and most instruments I used to play are now inaccessible.
I'm so sorry to hear about the stroke 🤗 The lyre is very versatile. Both melody and harmony can be played with one hand. I often play with just the one hand myself. ❤

@@sarahjaneheckscher6737 A method I use for playing a lot is glide method where we press down and release the strings. I find it most soothing and produces very clear tones.

Hello! I have recently looking into getting a lyre for my own personal use. Although, I have found it hard to bring myself to buy a lyre from brands I don't know anything about. And because I know very little about the lyre I cant tell what makes a good lyre and what makes a bad lyre. And what brands of lyres to stay away from and what brands generally make good quality products. So I was wondering is there brand of lyre or lyre in specific would you recommend to someone who wants to pick up the hobby for personal pleasure and is also generally new to music?

You will find that many of the modest lyres are mass produced from China. This makes these lyres affordable but the quality can be hit and missed. So far the favourite brands from our Facebook group appears to be Cega, Aklot and Donner. I have three Cega lyres and an Aklot lyre and and happy with all of them. The only lyre that I don't really play with much is my Molin brand lyre. This one do not stay in tune. Quite a few have expressed the same dissatisfaction on the Molin brand.

This is great advice! I usually practice standing, because I ruin up my posture when I play sitted, but I'll give it a try!

There’s no right or wrong way with lyres as long as you are comfortable and enjoying it. That’s the main thing ❤️
Help 😅 I come from the harp and I play my lyre holding it on my right side the same way I play my harps. Am I doing it all wrong or is it acceptable? I can't play it putting it to my left side. 😢

There is no standard for lyres like other instruments because of the many different types of lyres and methods of playing l. This means there is no right or wrong way to hold it. The main thing is that it is most comfortable for you and you are able to secure your instrument and play freely. Ensure you keep a good posture as well so you are not too tensed and strain your body.

How do you color the C’s?
There are different ways but the two that most people in our FB group had done is using a Sharpie permanent marker and thin nail polish application. We only colour the first 1inch or two and not the whole length of the strings. It's only to add a little visual effect to easily identify the strings. Hope this helps ❤️

Do you use nylon or metal strings?
I use wire strings. I did change one of my lyres out with nylon strings but I didn't like the result and sound as much so I restrung it back with wire.

What you are showing is great! Do you know what or who I need to talk to in order to learn how to learn how to play an actual song on the lyre? I don't which strings you are supposed to pluck with your left hand. I see people doing it, but can't find actual lessons on it! Thank you, for your help.
