Sharon, you're a godsend. I've struggled with getting my Aklot stay on my lap. After days of research, you're the first person who gives a practical solution. Thank you for your generosity! About painting the strings, what paint did you use? Does it affect the sound? I just subscribed to your channel, and I look forward to more of your content!
Thank you so much Samantha for the feedback. I'm so glad you found the tips useful. I used nail polish on my lyres, but be careful to ensure to wipe off extra paint as there tends to be too much paint on the brush, I found this on my first try and it was drippy and messy. Better to build up the colour with a few strokes than drippy. I didn't find any change in the sound of my lyre. I only painted about an inch down from the pins and only painted the tips of the pins. It was enough for me to see the colours visually and use as landmark. 💞

@@learningthelyreharp - Hi. I just wanted to mention that you can use colored tape, like duck tape, to color code the string on the tuning pegs. I used stickers on my old accordions as the target buttons were worn down. Thanks, love your channel. Subscribed!

I was thinking maybe you could allow me to freely translate your videos in french so that more people could understand it? What do you think about it? In. A first time i would like to translate your beginner videos and then when done i could do the other ones if it's ok for you
Yes. I'm a harpist also and struggle with holding this.. I used colored strips of tape on the wood below the strings to color code my c f and a strings. Good video! Thanks.

I just discovered a very practical and useful way to hold my lyre on my lap or on a table. I took some shelf liner that is non-slip and cut a piece to place on the bottom curve of the lyre. You can attach with some wood glue or double sided tape. You don't even notice it is there. It now will not slip if I play with it propped on a table nor will it slip while holding in my lap. Hope this helps someone! I am so excited for this solution since that was my biggest headache in trying to learn to play and 'fighting' for some stability while holding the lyre.

I am left-handed. Do they make GOOD (or at least decent) lyres for left-handers? The pricing of other left-handed instruments, if they are even offered, has made it cost prohibitive for me to own them.
Lyres like the harp can be played with both hands. You can assign the melody to be played by either hand and ensure that most of the strings are accessible with your dominant hand. I will try to do a video to demonstrate this in the coming weeks.

Hi Sharon, I was just wondering why you decided to paint the F string a certain colour. I believe I can understand why you painted the C string, as that is the tonic note of the scale. However what is the significance of F, is it to see the interval between the two notes? If so, what is the significance of a perfect 4th interval here? Thankyou very much, and for all your videos!
Those are the markers for harps. C’s are red and F’s are blue. It makes it easy to spot the notes at a glance, similar to how the key before the first two black notes in the piano are C’s and the key before the three black notes are F’s. Hope this helps ❤️

My Aklot lyre has 16 metal strings. Lowest note is G3

Thank you. Holding the lyre can be one of the trickiest when starting to learn just because there are so many variables. But they are versatile instruments. I find the most comfortable ways to play vary for me from lyre to lyre and style of playing. I'm sure you will find the way that is most natural for you 💗

You're very welcome. Another thing that has helped me greatly that is not covered in this video because I learnt it a bit later is to put a short stool to rest my feet flat on to raise my knees slightly up. This helps quite a bit with the position of the lyre and stabilizing it especially if you are trying to play two hands. The stool allows me to sit in a better more upright position and works better to help my body cradle the lyre as I play. Maybe I will create another video showing this later when I get a moment. Sometimes it is better to show than explain. :)
