VERY UPSET that there was no mention of "Tampopo, (1985) or "A Taxing Woman (1987), both directed by the late Juzo Itami. "Tampopo" has the distinction of being called "A Noodle Western" because of the story in which a Truck Driver helps a widow and her son save her business by helping her improve her noodles. "A Taxing Woman" is about a persistent Japanese IRS agent going after a tax evader (Tax evasion in Japan is REALLY INTENSE!). I worked at the theater in San Francisco when both were first released and both were absolutely enchanting, with "Tampopo" being so popular that it lasted at the theater for nearly a year. And I'm happy that they're both on my DVD shelf.

  • @josephschuster

Tampopo is the greatest Japanese comedy for westerners. Taking the form of a cowboy/samurai film this quirky movie contrasts delicious food with eccentric social values with hilarious moments equally to any. Monty Python movie. A must see for any fan of Japanese cinema.

"Grave of the Fireflies" should've been #1. Damn, that was the saddest movie I've ever seen. Left me depressed for three days straight. I watched it about 10 years ago and I still tear up a bit remembering some of the most heart-breaking scenes. There's something about the fact that it's a cartoon that makes it even more devastatingly inconsolable. A masterpiece in every sense of the word.

From classics like Mizoguchi, Ozu, Masumura, Fukasaku, Kobayashi, Shindo, Kurosawa or Tokuzo Tanaka to the moderns Kitano, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Sion Sono, Takashi Miike or Takashi Ishii and of course anime masters like Mamoru Oshii, Satoshi Kon, Katsuhiro Otomo or Yoshiaki Kawajiri.
    Japanese cinema is the best

Seriously, that movie is a masterpiece. It might be over 3 hours long, but it's totally worth the watch. I've watched it several times, and it's probably in my top 10 movies of all time.
Akira Kurosawa FTW. Oh, and if the plots of half of his movies sound familiar, it's because they were remade into (one might say inferior) westerns.

I agree with Seven Samurai, Ran, Rashomon and Tokyo Story, but they can forget the rest. I know they're big money grossers but all that animation has to go when Japan has a long and glorious list of great films! Japan was making high quality classic films long before any other Asian country. This list is kind of insulting.
I don't see how they left out The Burmese Harp, one of the most beautiful, intelligent anti-war movies ever made! Also, Sansho the Bailiff, Throne of Blood by Kurosawa, Samurai Rebellion, Onibaba, The Life of Oharu by Mizoguchi, a heartbreaking movie following his "fallen woman" theme. Not to mention wonderful modern day films like The Twilight Samurai, The Hidden Blade, etc. So many great Japanese films, too many to mention. This list was sorely lacking.

Couldn't agree with this list more. Seven Samurai is still my favorite film. It's a masterpiece. Tokyo Story is so depressing. But many people don't like it because it's such a lengthy film that doesn't have much action, but it tells about a shift in generations (could say the same about Seven Samurai). Miyazaki is obviously the director of now with animation being so primary in Japanese film internationally, but Akira Kurosawa is still the best Japanese Film Director of all time.

I watched Tokyo Story yesterday and was hooked from beginning to end. Everything from the outstanding and rule-breaking directing by master filmmaker Yasujirō Ozu, the emotive and complex writing by Ozu and Kōgo Noda, beautiful, cinematic, eye gazing cinematography by Yūharu Atsuta, and some of the most realistic, layered, emotional, deep, spell-binding and most authentic acting ever put to film, this movie is a true work of cinematic art. What particularly struck me about the movie was how emotional, complex and deep the characters were in the movie without being melodramatic like a lot of movies were at the time. Also the film's score by Kojun Saitō is beautiful and criminally underrated.

***** How is the storyline that much better? And in addition to that, Akira has the netter pacing, drama and equally good universe. And the philosophical questions are more intriguing especially, the whole "what makes us humans question" is used so often in sci fi, other than, "what makes a god."

And....All About Lily Chou Chou or Love Exposure aren't even in the list for honorable mention? Do your research. All of these films are great but there are other ones that should have made it on the list.

Yep, myazaki and kurosawa, just as expected, They are all good, but ffs, I wanted to maybe find something I haven't seen. How about a list where you can only have one entry per director?

You should check out Masaki Kobayashi and Yasujiro Ozu. Takeshi Kitano, Yoji Yamada and Hirokazu Koreeda are interesting modern directors.

specifically the movie called Rage. its one of my favorite gangster movies and the acting and story is really good. it despict how the Yakuza really work and in my opinion it rivals the likes of godfather and scarface.
and Takeshi Kitano as the main character is one of the biggest bad-asses to grace japanese cinema

josha poulsen Takeshi Kitano is undoubtedly badass, but Toshiro Mifune even more so. He's like a more awesome Japanese version of Clint Eastwood. Or Eastwood the American version of Mifune I think is more correct,
