@@slevinchannel7589 bro, you even comment about it in Satoshi Kon's comment -_- I'll say Satoshi Kon (for me) is better than Makoto Shinkai and Hayao Miyazaki. I wonder about his films if he still alive
Yoshitoki Ōima - A Silent Voice (about a deaf girl) Tatsuyuki Nagai - Anthem of the heart (about a girl loosing her ability to talk through a fairy) Hiroyuki Okiura - A Letter To Momo (about a girl meeting 3 Yōkai ) Takahiro Omori - Hotarubi no mori e (about a girl meeting a "ghost" in a forest and becoming friends with him) Keiichi Sugiyama - Origin - Spirits of the Past (dystopia movie, a young girl gets awaken after 300 years) Akio Nishizawa - Symphony in August (story of a girl whos dream it is to sing) All really great movies! :) tried to describe the main plot in as little words as possible...xD just a bit so you know what it is about
I read a koe no katachi (silent voice) manga and cried and smile along the way, was so hyped up abt the animation but was truly disappointed :( it doesn’t represent the anime too well. Don’t get me wrong, for those that haven’t read the manga its awesome but the manga its just wholesome. Though it is to be expected since adaptation of a manga is hard to execute.

It came out at kind of an unfortunate time and was overshadowed by Your Name. If any of you have not seen it yet, PLEASE do yourself a favour and watch it
Satoshi Kon's death was truly a tragedy for the world of cinema and animation. To think how much he revolutionized and inspired the craft, in the relatively little time he had.... one cannot avoid wondering how much more he could have contributed to cinema, and what masterpieces he could have given us.

@@Man_Myth_Barbalazos Absolutely. I think he is special because, not only he was brilliant regarding the visual side and he had a genius way of directing and editing (I recommend the video of the channel "every frame a painting" about him, very well done), but also beacuse his works present unique, very profound and solid philosophical and psychological insights. And above that, the form of his works match perfectly with their substance. In this way, I think you could easily confront him, without any shame, with some of the most important filmmakers of all time, such as Kubrick, Fellini, Lynch, Bergman or others.
One person I was sad to see not make this list: Naoko Yamada! Of course, she’s relatively new, but her work is incredible. The depth of humanity that went into A Silent Voice is part of what makes it such a wonderful movie. In addition, female anime directors are few and far between, and with the recent KyoAni tragedy the studio could use the support. That’s not to say that her work’s appeal lies in these things alone. It’s beauty speaks for itself.
You really did Satoshi Kon justice in this video. The way you can share such important pieces of art that many people boil down to as "just anime" in a way that is entertaining and thorough is just great. 👍

Just dropped here to thank you for producing such a smooth, ease inducing video, I had been holding on watching Tokyo Godfathers as a start of Satoshi Kon's works (although I watched Paranoia Agent before jejs) due to your recommendation, and now that I finally have, I'm glad it was displayed in such a comforting way. I enjoyed the film in every minute and I will soon procede to continue my Satoshi Kon journey with Millennial Actress. Thank you for making this video, this was not the first time I watched it nor it will be the last.
I have favorites from a number of directors. Hayao Miyazaki - Kiki's Delivery Service Isao Takahata - The Tale of Princess Kaguya Osamu Tezuka - Metropolis Makoto Shinkai - Children Who Chase Lost Voices Hiroyuki Morita - The Cat Returns Mamoru Hosada - The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Satoshi Kon - Perfect Blue and Tokyo Godfathers
This is a good list. I am split on Makoto Shinkai, though. On one hand, he has this beautiful poetic use of elements like rain and often incorporates them into some hidden symbolism, like in Voices of a Distant Star. It's a bit like Tarkovsky. On the other, the characters and the narrative tends to tunnel vision on a single relationship in an obsessive and unhealthy way, like in Voices of a Distant Star or She and her cat. I find that maddening.
@@hypothalapotamus5293 There is one example that happens to be my favorite where Shinkai deviates from his usual style and it truly pays off. He actually produced something more akin to Miyazaki when he made 'Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Far Below'.
If anyone is wondering. The man besides Miyazaki at the beginning of the video is Hideoki Anno, the director of the masterpiece show, neon genesis evangelion
your oratory skills are absolutely brilliant. Maybe it's just your pacing, voice and accent but you should definitely look to lend your voice to some audio books.
Also!! the soundtrack of your name is absolutely wonderful,, i love it even more than the movie itself. for anyone who wants to know, the first soundtrack they chose here is from that movie AH SO GORGEOUS
So happy to see Satoshi Kon on here. I (due to some weird set of circumstances) got to be in the same room as him when I was 13 at an anime event years ago. He since has become one of my favorite directors of all time, and it is fantastic to see him get the recognition he so much very much deserves.
Legitimately cried. I’ve seen all of these movies and admired all of the directors for a long time. I’m still sad about Satoshi Kon’s passing until now
"Also, there's a lot of feet in this movie, so if you're into that sort of thing, check it out." *Quentin Tarantino immediately orders Garden of Words*
glad to see Tokyo Godfathers getting recognition, got a copy in a bargain bin not knowing exactly what it was and it's one of the best finds I ever had, I agree it's a lot more relatable than Paprika, which i enjoyed a lot as well but are very different films.
I'm not heavily into anime, but years and years ago my mate showed up with Metropolis and put it on one night. I'd never seen anything quite like it and it very quickly became my favourite film across all genres of animation. The art work and story absolutely blew me away, I absolutely love the wide shots with all the beautiful colour and detail. I'd ask people I knew that were into anime if they had seen it in the hope that they could recommend other works that I could get into, but to my surprise, no one had ever heard of it. Despite me enthusiastically encouraging them to watch it I don't think they ever did.
There's two types of anime: the enjoyable, but essentially comercial shows about getting stronger and defeating enemies, and the movies; the amazingly beautiful and magically creative pieces of art that for some reason don't really get talked about outside of japan unless they're directed by Hayao Miyazaki (and I'm not trying to discredit him, in fact, he is the main reason these other movies do get talked about sometimes). Metropolis is amazing, what a shame that so many people haven't watched it. Im wondering, have you started watching more anime since your friend showed you Metropolis? If not, I assure you, this video lays out an amazing cast of creators to check out.
These are some of the animated movies that truly inspired me growing up. To see them talked about with such eloquence one after the other is pretty awesome and nostalgic. This video gave me chills
Thank you for the beautiful video you've made introducing all these fantastic directors... being an Asian, I've seen all (well, "almost" all except for the few small projects they did) the works before this was made and I highly agree with your recommendations. These animes brought back so many fun memories... especially Satoshi Kon's Tokyo God Father and Paprika... i almost teared hearing Paprika's sound track at the end because it was a trying time for me when the anime was released, the music took me away from my troubles...
I thought Metropolis was a dream I had as a kid and turned out it was a movie I watched early one morning and dozed off during but visualised parts of it in my imagination based on what I heard from the TV. Didn't find out until like 10 years or so it actually existed!
I liked 'Your name' but i find it buffling just how big it became. I have to say, its overhyped. Its not even meant as a normal critic when i say: This does not deserve to be THE Number One of all Anime-Movies, surpassing all Ghibli Movies. It just got Overhyped. Yes, its good, but the mere Idea its better than Spirited Away or even worse Movies is just Odd and feels very Strange. Not to mention my biggest Issue with the Movie itself: The Weird Groping Scenes. Multiple ones of them, which is way too much. Makes me cringe and sours the Replaybility, tbh. Good movie, sure, but improveworthy and not in the Top 10 Movies i know; yet the odd knowledge about it being Rank 1 in the world is... odd...
01:01 Mamoru Hosada and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time 02:59 Tezuka, Rintaro and Metropolis 06:21 Makoto Shinkai and The Children Who Chase Lost Voices 10:12 Satoshi Kon and Tokyo Godfathers From the description, as I couldn't click on it
Your voice is the best thing I have ever heard. I really enjoyed watching this video because I actually learnt things from it. Your commentary, the analysis, the editing, the background music were all so we'll put together! I hadn't planned on watching the entire video yet I sat and continued because I was that captivated and interested in what you had to say. Good job dude. You're cool.
I'm not someone that cryies while watching movies or occidental animation, but it's very rare for me not to cry while watching an anime film, even during happy scene my heart starts to heack it's such a wierd sensation, but i love this media because of it. In conclusion i love anime and i give my love to this artists.
Movies like Kimi No Na Wa leave you feeling empty after watching them. You can't help but just sit there as the credits roll. And think about what you just watched. At least for me I feel like there's an empty void in my heart.

I had never heard of Your Name before, nor any of these people or movies. I just watched Akira and loved it so much I wanted more. Great video and I’ve got plenty to watch now so thanks!
wolf children is really lovely and has a wonderful ost, though thick with emotion. the girl who leapt through time is touching and easy to comprehend my favourite anime film is in this corner of the world. it's not show-offy and pretty slow and long but does a great job of building the story and its main character
OMG !!! Metropolis!!! I never hear anyone mention Metropolis-- and it was one of my favs growing up (I stumbled upon it in the library DVD section back in the day lolol) !!! AA!! thank you
as a novice to the genre, having really only seen the stereotyped stuff (SAO, NGE, Haruhi, etcetc) i was not expecting to see Perfect blue, an oddball movie that showed up at the local video rental place in the early 00's (and as quickly vanished again) on the list. i thought at the time it was something very unusual but special. glad to see i wasn't wrong.
Perfect Blue and Paprika are ironically considered "stereotyped stuff" aswell because they were extremely well received by audiences and critics alike and have also one of the best musical compositions. They are very famous now and therefore "mainstream" but not in the typical way because they are old and nieche in theory.
i was hoping to find a masterpiece i've might have missed... but it seems all the ones discussed here are either already in my collection or i've watched... but a good video showcasing some excellent animation movies out of japan.
When thinking of my favorite anime movies a while ago, Tokyo Godfathers is one that I truly love. It is such a good movie and it pulls at your heartstrings quite a bit. If you've not seen it I recommend that you do!
I do wish you could have gone into more directors because I think most of these are mainstream I do love that you give credit to these masterful directors but I am both proud and a lil bummed out I know and seen most of these I NEED MORE GODDAMNIT
Wonderful. The loss of Satochi Kon is a void that can never be filled. Bless the new artists who step up and give us gold.

- The tale of Princess Kaguya
- Doraemon the Movie (seriously this is good)
- Birthday Wonderland
- Redline (this ones a must watch)
Thenks for the people that actually noticed this trash comment, also i added redline to the list (edited)
I read dat shii Boo!
@@tamie341 oh shiiiiiiiiiiiiiii HAAHAHAHAH thanks
Paranoia Agent is not a movie
@@vitorhenrique4187 Lol sorry, i just listed coz it was satoshi kon XDDD, still good tho, i highly recommend still. And if yer looking for another satoshi work i recommend the manga OPUS, if you like reading manga that is :) . Happy stay home read!
The last(or before last, i cant remember) part out of three in Flavours of youth is good, the rest were kinda rly slow and boring lol
This is beautifully put together and narrated.
I loved Garden of Words. The animation of water, along with the rainy soundscapes coupled with a beautiful, gentle story were astonishing I think.
It's great that so many people are getting this video recommended to them
I have favorites from a number of directors.
Hayao Miyazaki - Kiki's Delivery Service
Isao Takahata - The Tale of Princess Kaguya
Osamu Tezuka - Metropolis
Makoto Shinkai - Children Who Chase Lost Voices
Hiroyuki Morita - The Cat Returns
Mamoru Hosada - The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Satoshi Kon - Perfect Blue and Tokyo Godfathers
He actually produced something more akin to Miyazaki when he made 'Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Far Below'.
grave of the fireflies
You need a little spice in ur Satoshi Kon Recomendations...maybe some Paprika ?
@@navinshirodkar9439 Lol, that's a great idea! I love it from it's very . . . Inception? ;-)
If anyone is wondering. The man besides Miyazaki at the beginning of the video is Hideoki Anno, the director of the masterpiece show, neon genesis evangelion
So I wasn't the only one who noticed a familiar face.
your oratory skills are absolutely brilliant.
Radwimps also knocks it out of the park with Weathering With You.
So happy to see Satoshi Kon on here. I (due to some weird set of circumstances) got to be in the same room as him when I was 13 at an anime event years ago. He since has become one of my favorite directors of all time, and it is fantastic to see him get the recognition he so much very much deserves.
Amazing!
The background music at the beginning though!!! I love it!!!
Legitimately cried. I’ve seen all of these movies and admired all of the directors for a long time. I’m still sad about Satoshi Kon’s passing until now
Watched Tokyo Godfathers, thank you for the suggestion. It was amazing.
Satoshi kon is such a gems and underrated , masaaki yuasa as well!
perfect blue is my favourite
@@zara9728 so I'm not the only one :D
I have NO idea why I waited so long, but I finally watched 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time' and damn. That movie delivered.
Boy and the Beast and Wolf Children are incredible movies. I grew up on them so they mean even more to me.
"Also, there's a lot of feet in this movie, so if you're into that sort of thing, check it out."
*Quentin Tarantino immediately orders Garden of Words*
I was literally thinking of Tarantino as I wrote that line!! :D
glad to see Tokyo Godfathers getting recognition, got a copy in a bargain bin not knowing exactly what it was and it's one of the best finds I ever had, I agree it's a lot more relatable than Paprika, which i enjoyed a lot as well but are very different films.
Children Who Chase Lost Voices is one of my favourite anime movies after Howl's Moving Castle, Boy and the Beast and Wolf Children :))
Finally somebody's talking about 'Tokyo godfathers' and also waiting for the day someone will be talking about 'only yesterday'.
I thought Metropolis was a dream I had as a kid and turned out it was a movie I watched early one morning and dozed off during but visualised parts of it in my imagination based on what I heard from the TV. Didn't find out until like 10 years or so it actually existed!
Dude, thank you for existing.
I liked 'Your name' but i find it buffling
just how big it became.
I have to say, its overhyped.
Its not even meant as a normal critic when i say:
This does not deserve to be THE Number One
of all Anime-Movies, surpassing all Ghibli Movies.
It just got Overhyped.
Yes, its good, but the mere Idea its better than Spirited
Away or even worse Movies is just Odd and feels very Strange.
Not to mention my biggest Issue with the Movie itself:
The Weird Groping Scenes. Multiple ones of them, which is
way too much. Makes me cringe and sours the Replaybility, tbh.
Good movie, sure, but improveworthy and not in the Top 10 Movies i know;
yet the odd knowledge about it being Rank 1 in the world is... odd...
@@slevinchannel7589 uh, ok?
01:01 Mamoru Hosada and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
02:59 Tezuka, Rintaro and Metropolis
06:21 Makoto Shinkai and The Children Who Chase Lost Voices
10:12 Satoshi Kon and Tokyo Godfathers
From the description, as I couldn't click on it
Your voice is the best thing I have ever heard. I really enjoyed watching this video because I actually learnt things from it. Your commentary, the analysis, the editing, the background music were all so we'll put together! I hadn't planned on watching the entire video yet I sat and continued because I was that captivated and interested in what you had to say. Good job dude. You're cool.
Wow, just... thank you so much for this comment :) It made me so happy. Thank you!!!
M Muss I want my future kids to go to sleep listening to narrations by him xD
Madhavi Nath couldn’t agree more.
At least for me I feel like there's an empty void in my heart.
man i feel you, just in the morning i watched weathering with you it really played with my emotions and left me with tears in my eyes whith a feelling that cant be described .
but cant wait for the next movie from this incredible director
I had never heard of Your Name before, nor any of these people or movies. I just watched Akira and loved it so much I wanted more. Great video and I’ve got plenty to watch now so thanks!
Your name is a masterpiece. give it a try you wont regret it.
Faint Smile it’s on my list, don’t worry
You've gotta watch your name
The karaoke scene in the Girl Who Leapt Through Time was the most i've ever laughed with a movie. A true masterpiece.
wolf children is really lovely and has a wonderful ost, though thick with emotion. the girl who leapt through time is touching and easy to comprehend
my favourite anime film is in this corner of the world. it's not show-offy and pretty slow and long but does a great job of building the story and its main character
a silent voice is also great, although i found the manga better just because you can cover less in a film, it's still a really accurate adaptation
Girl who lept through time easy to follow !? I spent hours trying to figure it out !
OMG !!! Metropolis!!! I never hear anyone mention Metropolis-- and it was one of my favs growing up (I stumbled upon it in the library DVD section back in the day lolol) !!! AA!! thank you
Crackle ps3😊
youtube actually recommended something good for once.
well done man
The editing is so good I love this how have I taken 3 years to find this channel
Sparkle in the beginning gave me chills
as a novice to the genre, having really only seen the stereotyped stuff (SAO, NGE, Haruhi, etcetc) i was not expecting to see Perfect blue, an oddball movie that showed up at the local video rental place in the early 00's (and as quickly vanished again) on the list. i thought at the time it was something very unusual but special. glad to see i wasn't wrong.
Perfect Blue and Paprika are ironically considered "stereotyped stuff" aswell because they were extremely well received by audiences and critics alike and have also one of the best musical compositions. They are very famous now and therefore "mainstream" but not in the typical way because they are old and nieche in theory.
CHILDREN WHO CHASE LOST VOICES FROM DEEP BELOW. God, finally, i remember seeing it once and ive lost it ever since. Ive been searching and searching.
It's there on TH-cam
ME TOO. Those white ghoul creatures haunted my dreams and I had no idea where they were from
Satoshi Kong was robbed of an Academy Award! Millennium Actress, and Tokyo Godfathers are awesome movies!
This video appeared perfect timing I just started studying animation at skl and these directors and recommendations are perfect
Yung switch sa tagalog HAHAHAHAHHA
Thank you, I was just looking for some anime that I can relate to more. These are perfect and I particularly can't wait to check out Satoshi's work.
4:28 The share intelligence of those statements almost made me shed a tear. There is still hope.
RIP Satoshi Kon. So sad he died at young age. I love all of his movies and his unique editing style.
i was hoping to find a masterpiece i've might have missed... but it seems all the ones discussed here are either already in my collection or i've watched... but a good video showcasing some excellent animation movies out of japan.
When thinking of my favorite anime movies a while ago, Tokyo Godfathers is one that I truly love. It is such a good movie and it pulls at your heartstrings quite a bit. If you've not seen it I recommend that you do!
I absolutely love your videos, Joe. You're brilliant, insightful and your voice is so very gentle. I could watch these videos all day.
"also, there's a lot of feet in this movie so if you're into that sort of thing check it out"
bruh
Tarantino's favorite anime film
I thought his favorite was paprika. The internet was wrong... what?
Satoshi Kon is my favorite, he was an absolute genius and a risk taker. RIP legend.
congratulations, this was very well done. An excellent intro into non-ghibli anime
I do wish you could have gone into more directors because I think most of these are mainstream
I do love that you give credit to these masterful directors but I am both proud and a lil bummed out I know and seen most of these
I NEED MORE GODDAMNIT
GREAT call on Metropolis! saw it in theater when it first hit the US. the ending scene is so insane
Building: *Fucking explodes*
The Movie: (my favourite) I can't stop looooviing youuu
