For the "Lyman in Jon's basement" theory, Lyman left the comics from a comic strip of him going on holiday, to a place with their own version of big foot, in a later comic, Jon goes to the same place, looking for Lyman, finding the big foot, however, it is just Lyman in a big foot suit, as he had to replace the previous man in the suit, I don't remember what it said happened to him, but Lyman replaced him, and was there ever since

There were even video games based on him in the 80s on the 8 bit systems, one was called Garfields big fat hairy deal. Because dog afterlife works differently; Odie doesn't have nine lives, but a dog is faithful. He gets around it by being faithful enough to follow Garfield into death. They're bonded. God is probably impressed by the idea of a dog and cat getting along that well, or the sheer novelty, that he does Garfield a favor. Odie will just reincarnate when needed.
