This is why I watch Quinton. His videos have become a sort of ...joke on social media. And I admit that's how I found his content. I said to myself, "Haha, let's watch the first 10 minutes of this long Victorious video, how absurd." Next thing I know I'm an hour into it. See, you watch this video and you think, oh wow, what nice midwesterners. Whereas I watch and think, "Statistically speaking, a lot of these people hate gays, and at least one of these nice old-timers would probably attend a lynching if he heard someone was putting one together."
As an Indiana native, I can confirm that every building requires a statue of Garfield, not just the businesses. Even houses and apartments. Plus, if you remove it, you get arrested. Removing my statue was never in the cards, though because my house came with a load bearing Garfield
Sometimes you just come across phrases that tickle and please you to no end, “Load-bearing Garfield” is absolutely one of those. Honorable mention to “Expired Cow” from the Fred video
Growing up in Indiana I probably heard at some point that Jim Davis is from here... but somehow never put two and two together and have always just assumed it was common for businesses to randomly have Garfield statues? Like I just thought Garfield was so widely loved that random grocery stores just sometimes decided to have statues of him installed. Indiana being Jim Davis' home state makes a lot more sense, but I miss the world I used to live in where I thought random Garfield statues were a common occurrence everywhere lmao
I was just thinking the same thing, haha. I've lived in Indiana for over 20 years and I never gave it a second thought that Garfield is everywhere. It was much the same in central Illinois where I grew up since that was Garfield's prime time. I loved Garfield growing up so I just assumed so did everyone else and that's why I see him everywhere. Didn't put two and two together about the Jim Davis being from Indiana connection until now. You're not alone, haha.
Same! I’ve lived in Indy for like three years now, and i don’t think i ever even knew Jim Davis was from the area. I just assumed that Garf was just a big enough cultural icon that some people liked to have statues and signs and stuff of the character 😂
@@MrMoogle Sadly central IL is largely Garfieldless now. I want to live in a world where Garfield is so widely adored that cities in all 50 states have Garfield statues.
The closest thing I have to this is growing up in Kansas, while I understood Arkansas was pronounced are-kin-saw, I for some reason thought the Arkansas River was pronounced "are-Kansas River". Lmao. I think I assumed that the Arkansas River in Kansas was a completely separate river from the actual Arkansas River? To this day if I ever have to mention the Arkansas River in front of someone who isn't from Kansas, I have to pause and think before I speak lmao. Oh, but you bet your ass if you're from Kansas I have no shame in calling that river ar-kansas river.
This feels like the opposite of Eyepatch Wolf's Garfield video. John starts to lose his mind as he goes further into the internet culture surrounding Garfield while Quinton just gives a nice, heartfelt video just about the history of Jim Davis comics. The lesson here is don't interact with internet fandoms
I came here after watching SEW’s Garfield video. Seeing a fan with a more wholesome take on Garfield is incredibly refreshing after how heavy that video was
"Don't waste your life like I've wasted mine. Find something creative to do, *other* than whatever has lead me to this point in my life." I dunno dude. You seemed so legitimately happy throughout this video. You seemed fulfilled, overjoyed, even euphoric to see these statues, and comic strips, and all the stuff in this documentary. Your words say "don't live like me" but your actions say "I'm the happiest man on Earth." It's hard to argue against results like that.
Let’s give a hand to Quinton’s dad. He literally was the cameraman for some of the most important moments in lost media history. Also he filmed his adult son riding a Garfield storefront ride for 3 year olds.
As a native Hoosier, I have never met anyone who has stayed in our state for 5 days and experienced joy. I am very happy that you were able to accomplish this.
Nah, Jim Davis has actually long been murdered by the Team behind lasagna cat - btw does anyone know if Quinton has commented on their content in any way? I only recently found their vids and was in awe at how amazingly great some of them are, but as someone who (outside of memes, gorefield and such) has had relatively little interaction with Garfield at all, I was surprised to find out how hated Jim Davis and even early Garfield seems to be
As someone who was (still am, I guess) obsessed with Garfield I'm glad I found your channel. When I was a kid I collected everything Garfield I possibly could, bought the books when they came out, rented them from the library, picked up plushies from garage sales... Every birthday card was always Garfield. As a 35 year old lady I still get Garfield cards from my family. Lol! So, I'm jazzed to have found someone who shares the same reverence for one fat orange cat.
I am forever excited to meet other adults who also checked out Garfield books from the library when our parents sent us their to learn lollll. I always thought I was the only one!
Why do people like Garfield? I've liked Garfield but I don't know why other than maybe it works both as a simple joke but also does actually have a story which would incentivize people to follow if they were invested in the characters.
As an individual with an MA in history, the level of dedication in investigating the origins of Garfield is amazing. I speak from personal experience when I say that I know what it feels like to read microfilm for hours on end
I really like the Jon poem thing, not only because of the extended universe, but because it implies that in true Jon Arbuckle fashion, the creators of the poetry book did the literary equivalent of a Mike Wazowski and misspelled his name. That just absolutely feels like something that would happen in Garfield-Jon finally does something important, consequential, worthwhile, only to get none of the credit because of a single errant letter.
i love how at so many points in this video where quinton talks to someone about garf, they’re always like “oh you HAVE to see this stuff, too” it’s just so cool seeing people share what they love with each other
Quinton, as a professional archivist, I've really enjoyed watching your videos on your Garfield research. Archives are such wonderful resources that a lot of peoples don't realize are free and open to the public (in most cases nowadays). I hope that your videos plant that seed for your viewers. One of the reasons archivists preserve and describe this stuff is just so curious people like you can tell untold stories like this one.
I really hope people come back to watch this one from the Victorious vid. This is one of my favorite of yours, I remember when I first came out. It actually inspired me to get back involved in my local historical society because of how noble I think this kind of work is. Keep up the great work Quinton!
It isn't for nothing that you consider this your magnum opus, this video is just overflowing with personality and passion. Your enthusiasm is contagious, I was full on onboard with your journey uncovering Garfield creator Lore. Now I kinda understand why you are so fixated in Garfield. Thank you for your work in putting together this masterpiece, good job!
"The poet John Arbuckle" Gnorm Gnat actually takes place millennia after the world of Garfield is ravaged by nuclear war and Jon's comics and cartoons, much like Homer's epics, are some of the last remaining first-hand accounts of the late 1970s until the break out of the war.
Remember that one Garfield storyline where Garfield travels into the future when he no longer exists and his home is abandoned? It all fits together...
The fact that Quintons love of Garfield is so clearly tied to his bond with his father is just wonderful. A lot of media only shows us father/son relationships that are hostile or cold or based on the son not living up to his father's dreams. And a lot of those deal with a traditionally masculine father being unable to connect with his dorky or otherwise non-macho son. So it's just nice to see the opposite of that.
34:51 The intro of Quinton riding that animatronic warmed my heart, but this moment absolutely melted it. He's just so passionate, no words can describe how charming this is video is & all the careful thought put into it. I do hope you can return another day just for your own sake, no work attached. Personally, I'm obsessed with Peter Rabbit & had high hopes of visiting its tourist attraction when I was finishing university as an international student. Then with covid happening, that's going to be postponed for possibly a year or two. But watching Quinton share his roadtrip, I'm genuinely filled with joy for him xx
38:21 Heard joke once: Cat went to the Vet says he's depressed. Says life is harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Vet says, Treatment is simple. Great comic Garfield is in the daily funny pages . He should read a few of them and he will feel better. Cat bursts into tears...but Doc he says...I hate Mondays. Haha, good joke. Everybody laughs. Newspaper recycled.
It's wild to me that this is considered one of your "less popular" videos. I've been following you since the Nostalgia Critic video and still primarily think of you as "the Garfield guy" 10/10 Documentary, btw
Sometimes when my depression is really hitting, I come back to this video to try to absorb some secondhand happiness from Quentin's sheer joy and passion with this project
you know, in comic fandom there's a thing called "Tintinology" it's Tintin brought down to a science, Donald Duck has the same kind of thing "Donaldism". You might be the worlds first "Garfieldologist"
THIS is why you mentioned in your disneyland video that you went on vacation to indiana!! i was honestly concerned when you said that, as a person from indiana, why anybody in their right mind would come here.

I come back to this video periodically just to see the pure joy Quinton exudes. I love to see people unironically enjoy their niche interests. It's so lovely to see.
I’m a huge sap who loves when people love things and this video literally made me cry lol. Your dedication to archiving and preserving this history of a thing you adore is so touching and genuine and I thank you for sharing it.
Your genuine love of Garfield makes me so happy. I loved newspaper comics as a kid, including Garfield, and would read them in the paper, and check out the books from my library. But I grew out of that phase, and the internet convinced me that they were lame. So I've really loved seeing someone around my age that unabashedly loves something without irony.
i loaded this up again to show support for the re-listing, only to be AGAIN struck by the sweet, pure joy of the opening sequence where you ride a Garfield ride. this year has sucked but that little moment never fails to make me smile, now even months later.
as someone who has seen "07/27/1978" by lasagnacat legitimately over 70 times, and who has watched it every day for the past 2 months, i GENUINELY yelled "YES" and started clapping when i heard him say "the pipe strip"
Him meeting Jim Mansfield really felt like 2 long lost friends catching up 🥺 Love this video, it's like we get to share his passion and his happiness for a moment.
It was a pleasure to voice Jon again! You took the journey that every Garfield TH-camr dreams of, buddy! Super happy for you and I’m thrilled you documented it for us!
This man sharing his love for this oddly specific yet amazing piece of culture - "I bet I'm boring you" PLEASE. This was the best, most entertaining video I've seen in a long time and I wish it was longer lmao.
I loved this so much. It makes me a bit sad to hear the self hate humor when you went to Garfield's street though. It's okay to be happy, you don't need to put yourself down for enjoying what you enjoy. If anything, cherishing that is important.
I live in Muncie and this video is so surreal. I know some of the filmmakers you borrowed footage from and I've been to a couple of these locations. I'm pretty sure the Centre for the Arts is haunted lol
This man, Quinton, an amazing guy, put so much work into restoring lost history to give something to make humanity even just a little greater. What a great man. He should be in the history books.
"This one proved to be impossible to restore or even READ" Dude. It says "I wished I lived in 6th Century Britain during the time of King Arthur. I can see me now... A gnat in shining armor."
I was so surprised that you said this video wasn’t particularly successful during the victorious video because it’s what made me subscribe to your channel. As someone who really has no interest in Garfield or any nostalgia for him this was such an interesting exploration and I’m enjoying watching it again!
Honestly my favorite part of this is when he handed Quinton that incredibly rare pin and you can just. See the vice grip. That pin is never leaving his sight, ever. But seriously I LOVE when people get super deep into "niche" interests like this. It's an incredible boon to media preservation. I can't believe all of those rare strips and items were found! That's awesome!! Edit: Also the more I watch it, the more amazed I am that there is a LOT of cool stuff in the world and cool stories you can learn by just... asking people nicely. All of these cool rooms, items, etc people were MORE than happy to talk about just because Quinton just... asked nicely and seemed appreciative.
This all hits very close to home for me, because I actually live in a town known for a comic strip. I live in Santa Rosa, the home of 'Peanuts,' by Charles M. Shulz. You can't go very far without seeing a statue of a peanuts character. We have a 'Snoopy's Ice Rink,' a museum dedicated to Charles Schultz-and we did have his childhood home, until the fires. So all this is just very normal and familiar to me.
The “statues customized by local artists” is familiar to me as well. I live in Utrecht, which is the home of Nijntje, or Miffy as she is known in most of the world.
His childhood home was in Saint Paul MN, and there’s statues all over there as well. I used to live just a few houses down. He died in Santa Rosa but he grew up in Saint Paul (and peanuts makes more sense as a MN comic to me, it’s very midwestern not to mention all the snow...)
I remember that, in one of the anniversary books, Jim Davis said that he once saw some ad that went along the lines of “John arbuckle enjoys this coffee”, and that name stuck with him as just the perfect name for the Everyman. So there is some truth to your theory about Jon arbuckle just being Jim Davis’s stock name.
I'm a viewer on the verge of homelessness and my landlords cut off my wifi so I'm watching this at 2am in my city centre. This is such a great video, and I'm someone who has no strong feelings for Garfield either way. I'm also not American, so I don't think I have the same connection to the character. However, I loved learning about the illustrator and seeing the influence of Garfield on local communities. There's a lot I've taken from this video but can't fully talk about. Tonight has been a night where I've had a lot yelled at me from drivers, and I've not yet finished the video. This was really enjoyable, easy to get into. Thanks for another great video!
I cannot believe a year has passed and no one has at least taken to time to ask if you were alright. I know we are strangers. But I genuinely give you my best wishes.
i already watched this video months ago but i cam back from the victorious call to action. And i agree this deserve so much more views, the work you did for the history of garfield is INSANE
Yeah, I was confused as hell when he said the library was smaller than what he's used to as libraries in my city are usually half the size of the one he showed. Honestly it makes me kind of jealous...
God your dedication is truly admirable... I've never actually felt passion for something to the extent that even on my vacation I'd dedicate most of my time to Honestly, this is oddly inspiring to me
Haven’t watched the whole video, but you hit my nostalgia here. I’m autistic and I had moments in my childhood that my special interests were Garfield (when the movie came out, I watched it in the cinema, and later many times on VHS and DVD) and Peanuts, and I remember my dad printing out Peanuts comics to me, and they were so awesome. It was back when the internet was still pure html with some JavaScript here and there.
I'm exactly the same way, my hyperfixation was newspaper comics, and my grandfather would always save up the funnies from throughout the week to give to me when I visited on weekends. I would always get Garfield and Peanuts comic book as gifts from family for birthdays and holidays. It's nice to know I shared those niche special interests with someone.
As soon as Quinton mentioned Muncie, I kept asking myself where I knew that name from. I am so glad I saw this comment, or else it probably would have continued to haunt me for several days, until I eventually watched an episode of "The Joy of Painting" and remembered.
There's something so wholesome and infectious about seeing and hearing people talk about their interests with such knowledge and passion. Whether nor not you share the same interests. Also those Garfield hangers @30:37 - I've never seen such things...and I kinda dig them.
I'm here after you asked us to check out this video at the end of the victorious pt2 and I'm really glad you did! This was a very interesting video even though I am just an average fan of Garfield. I'm sorry your video didn't perform better and it's absolutely crazy to me that you uncovered such a huge piece of Garfield history that was lost for so long!!!
One of the (relatively speaking) few who saw this prior to end of victorious, and this isgenuinely fascinating and deserves more views. Go, algorithm, go!
This video is honestly a joy to watch. An hour worth of content of someone going in-depth about something they're so clearly passionate and excited about is really nice and easy to listen to.
i came from the end of victorious video and i am SO glad i did. it makes me so happy to see someone so passionate and genuinely happy about things that a lot of people might find silly. i’m sorry this didn’t do so well initially because it deserves to be hyped!!!
I know this video is 3 years old but man, I just found your channel about 2 weeks ago. And Im obsessed with it. I love how you make the videos. Im in my early 40s, my family migrated from Europe to South America when I was a little kid. And Garfield was ALL over the place here. And I happen to love cats. Heck, Im watching your iCarly video because Ive been watching reruns of it with my mom. She is 75. Im going on too long about my personal history to say these shows and characters do appeal for people of all ages. And I miss that with newer Netflix shows and movies. Awesome videos! Thanks for the hours and hours of entertainment you have provided me, my friend. Cheers!
In a world where Garfield never existed, Quinton hunts Jim Davis to convince him to create Garfield. (Actually, since Jim Davis never created anything outside Gnorm Gnat, The Garfield equivalent is a Caterpie named Jon.)
my favorite thing about covid-19 is the amount of times i has seen people trying to warn their audience that some thing was filmed in the before times hence the closeness of all the people is OK. at this point i just assume any video where folks gather was filmed months ago
I came to this video after watching some of your recent extra long videos, not knowing what to expect. I am so glad I watched this video!! Not only is the content just wholesome and interesting, it's amazing to see your dedication and joy at finding these comics. I'll admit I know nothing about Garfield but just experiencing this alongside you in video form was fantastic and oddly educational and fun! Super awesome video!!
When my dad passed away the things we enjoyed doing together and just even the things he did on his own time became very comforting for me even if I wasn’t the hugest fan in the world of all of them. We used to read Harry Potter and watch Cheers and The Rocky movies together and some of my earliest memories of him was watching him watch red Sox’s games or NASCAR races and him being so devastated when Dale Earnhardt died in a crash. So I can understand your bond with Garfield since I’ve had this bond with all these things that connect back to my dad for the past 6 years
I just came from the second Victorious video, and I have to say that this was such an endearing journey that I had a lot of fun watching. As a long time fan of Garfield myself, it's wonderful to see how much passion and love that comes from people who enjoy the character and its history
This was genuinely incredible. I remember reading Garfield comics growing up whenever I visited my grandparents house. Other than that, I don't have much memory or connection to it. But I learned so much, and was really touched by how happy random people were to show you around all the Garfield stuff. Thanks for the video!
Not even a minute in, and I get huge nostalgia flashbacks hearing that Lou Rawls song from the Garfield CD. I found that gem I don't know how many years ago in a used CD shop and begged my Dad to buy it for me, which he did. I think listened to it non-stop, and even ripped (remember when that was a thing) the CD to the family computer and the album has been on every ipod I've had. I have since lost the physical CD, but I still have all the digital files and listen to them from time to time.
I love Jolly Roger's kiddie rides because of their Superman kiddie ride that used to be at my local mall. It played the Superman TAS theme, and as a fan of Superman who read the comics and watched the cartoon, it was heaven!!
This is my favourite thing, when someone is unabashedly passionate about something and has a positive impact on the fandom as a whole. Love your other videos, but this one was a phenomenal effort & deserves more views!

Let’s give a hand to Quinton’s dad. He literally was the cameraman for some of the most important moments in lost media history.
Also he filmed his adult son riding a Garfield storefront ride for 3 year olds.

Alternate Reality where Garfield the president is never shot so the cat's name is Lincoln.
I really like the Jon poem thing, not only because of the extended universe, but because it implies that in true Jon Arbuckle fashion, the creators of the poetry book did the literary equivalent of a Mike Wazowski and misspelled his name. That just absolutely feels like something that would happen in Garfield-Jon finally does something important, consequential, worthwhile, only to get none of the credit because of a single errant letter.
i love how at so many points in this video where quinton talks to someone about garf, they’re always like “oh you HAVE to see this stuff, too” it’s just so cool seeing people share what they love with each other
I've never given Garfield a single thought, I'm just happy to see my boy Quinton having such a good time
Quinton, as a professional archivist, I've really enjoyed watching your videos on your Garfield research. Archives are such wonderful resources that a lot of peoples don't realize are free and open to the public (in most cases nowadays). I hope that your videos plant that seed for your viewers.

Your genuine love of Garfield makes me so happy. I loved newspaper comics as a kid, including Garfield, and would read them in the paper, and check out the books from my library. I loved this so much. It makes me a bit sad to hear the self hate humor when you went to Garfield's street though. It's okay to be happy, you don't need to put yourself down for enjoying what you enjoy. If anything, cherishing that is important.

This man, Quinton, an amazing guy, put so much work into restoring lost history to give something to make humanity even just a little greater. What a great man. He should be in the history books.
"This one proved to be impossible to restore or even READ"
Dude. It says "I wished I lived in 6th Century Britain during the time of King Arthur. I can see me now... A gnat in shining armor."
Quinton’s eyes were probably burning by that point due tp the sheer number of comic strips he’d been looking at
And I mean, Photoshop is still a thing, right?
Exactly
That, is adorable.

46:29 "it was here were I discovered my main demographic is girls with pink hair"
I started laughing until I realized I'm a girl with pink hair
Muncie is also obsessed with Bob Ross, as he filmed on the ball state campus.

When my dad passed away the things we enjoyed doing together and just even the things he did on his own time became very comforting for me even if I wasn’t the hugest fan in the world of all of them.
