Good video, thank you for sharing. You showed the left lower link arm, however there is an extra bracket on the right side that you did not show. Any info on this would be appreciated. I have the pitman arm bracket on the left and nothing on the right.
How long is the top link, I bought a 501 from a guy down the road and he didn’t have the top link can you measure the two bars for me and where the bolts are.
The mower will NOT run with sickle in vertical position. (up for transport) (We have two of these at home, and I started running it when 6yrs old) As you look at the back of running mower 10:44 you see PTO pulley near center with a belt turning the Crank Pully (on lower Left) For the mower to work, this crank pulley has to push the wooden connector rod side-to-side, which is attached to the base of sickle/cutter... moving the blades. When the sickle is in UP/vertical position 0:23 the force of this connecting rod pushes at 90-degrees to the base of sickle bar, and cannot move blades at all. Trying to turn on the mower/PTO shaft when sickle bar is UP just wants to break things... and will either: [a] cause the rubber belt to slip+squeal or snap, [b] break the wooden connector rod, [c] stop the tractor engine from running. There are some other types of sickle mower that CAN run vertically... ( for instance some John-Deere & New-Holland mower's I've run ) ...but don't try that with this model of Ford 501 sickle mower. ** Ya gotta learn HOW the machinery runs First, to run it Right on the farm **
Is there any way you can measure the push rod on the operators left side. It goes from the 3 point to spring in the back to hold the end of the sickle bar level. I want to make one. They are $200 if you buy them on the internet.
Nice video I've got a 501 ford sickle and a ford 601 workmaster. Been in the family since new.

Will it cut in the vertical position for trimming my cypress trees?
+Charlie S Mine will not because of the pitman rod design. But I think the modern belt driven versions, will cut vertically.
They will cut 40 degrees or so above and below horizontal.
