  • It time to starting fixing our used hay equipment. Today we are going to be working on our New Holland 451 sickle bar mower. We bought the sickle bar mower at auction just a few miles from where we live. There is several things that need fixed on this mower and hopefully it is ready to cut hay when I am done with the repairs.

    I watched this episode last night. The day before I finally got my Massey Fergusen 31 under my shed roof to go over it. There are a lot of similarities with the 31 and your New Holland. I want you to know I was greatly inspired by your repair videos on the New Holland. Thank you! I really felt the Lord had me watch that. I’m gonna get on it. I too have decided to start raising hay. I bought a used baler MF 12, the mowing machine, and a New Holland rake, all very used. . Best wishes and thank you for the great video!

    I can remember the county and state using sickle bar mowers to mow the sides of the roads. That tic tic tic is a true blast from the past.

    That's the same sickle mower my grandpa used on his farm, the only thing I didn't like when I mowed I broke a lot of knives off. I glad that your restoring a old cutter, people don't take the and them up. Can't wait to see the girl in action. Thanks for sharing. Be safe and God Bless

    When your ready to try mowing be sure the cutting bar is at a right angle to the tractor. if not the hay will bind up in the teeth. The teeth and separators should be angled up a few degrees to keep them from digging in to the ground. When you buy replacement knives I recommend the serrated edge type, especially if the field is old. A reseeded field wouldn’t be a issue and smooth knives will work. You’ll need a riveting tool, too. I had all John Deere equipment but they’re almost universal as far as operating. Be careful on even slightly uneven terrain, always try to keep the cutting bar uphill. If its on the downhill side and you try to lift it, you can possibly flip the tractor if you shit the center of balance. I use to keep a sawed off 410 shotgun in a holster on the roll bar, when cutting hay you never know when supper is going to jump out!

    I bought one of the New Holland 451 mowers new in 1969. It was actually easy to hook up to and I loved the way it cut. I got the rear hitch and pto shaft where I could hook up my hay conditioner behind the mower. The conditioner ran directly behind the tractor and crimped the swath previously cut. The mower served me well until 1975 when I bought a Heston Haybine with a 9' cut. New Holland also built a pull type mower with the same set up only on wheels. Thanks for jogging my memory, nice video.

    Great video. I love seeing how machinery works. I used to be a woman that changed her own oil n worked in a machine shop. So I am very mechanically inclined. I can't do that sort of stuff anymore due to health issues but I love watching someone work on stuff. Thanks for this video. It was over n it seemed like it just got started so it wasn't at all long to me. Thanks again.

    You only need to use 1 of the upper top link connection points. The one that is part of the mower is an optional mount method. On the left side you will see a ball looking mount and on the optional mount bar there is a round receiver that hooks over the ball. Put that on the ball and lock it down with the installed lever. Then use a standard top link. I can't cut and past but if you scroll through my videos there is one for a NH 451 I bought new in the 90's and finally sold. You can see how I have it hitched to my JD 1050.

    Nice video. It would probably fit better on the case. It should have longer 3 point arms. I like sickle mowers but they can really be a pain sometimes. I’d probably run it with the case if I where you. You should make a video when you are mowing with it.

    • @CountryViewAcres
      @CountryViewAcres  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Case has the "eagle" hitch, which is a fixed 3 point hitch, no sway, kinda like a quick hitch. And the hitch is 26 inches inside width, which was to narrow to hook up to the sickle bar mower. So I was forced to use the Allis Chalmers.

    I've cut alot of hay with a sickle bar mower.. We used to do about 50 acres of hay a year. I know you said none of the teeth are broken but they should have ribs on the edge of the teeth. If they dont then they should be changed out. Also they might be riveted on but u can buy nuts and bolt at tractor supply specially for those type mowers.. 2nd thing is sometimes the cutting bars can slide down when u pick it up by your hands. Ive known a couple of people that has lost fingers that way. Always use the palm of your hands when lifting it up.. Great video cant wait for hay season...

    You should buy a sandblaster,take that mower apart piece by piece,blast,prime,paint or powdercoat them,replace any worn parts,such as bearings and belts,then put it all back together. You'll have a brand new mower.

Shows you are putting your “Ramsey” learning to work. BTW, his offices are a couple of miles away from us here in Franklin, TN. Has The baler been used recently? My son and I have all our lives been involved in farming...... In the last three years we sold every thing to do with Cotton and Peanuts and converted to growing and processing Hay......It is the only crop that the producer has total control over the value received for the finished product..... We have had such success we bought the machinery to establish 150 more acres... finished the job and sold it to another Hay Producer.....at a profit.. ..... so good luck with your endeavors........

    Wow, I have a farm about the same size and wish I had your mechanical skills. That was an impressive repair video. Only issue with a cutter bar VS a haybine is you don't have the crusher behind pulling the hay off the cutter. it does a great job but I have found when you get into thick grass, it likes to clog up. stemmy material like your hay that has more long stem timothy or alfalfa, clover etc, it works well. if you get into too thick of crab grass, it doesn't do as well. not as good on wet hay (mourning dew) either.

I dont think I have seen any but then I sure do understand the complication handling loose hay vs hay bales
