- In this video we put an old Ford 8N to the test, using it to cut hay with a ford 501 sickle bar mower, Then make windrows with an international Harvester 14 rake……… will it be able to bale hay successfully with the recently Pulled out of the weeds New Holland super hayliner 69 Baler? Can it handle the strain? It’s our only tractor at the moment so I hope so!

OMG...this brings back so many memories from my younger years...1969 - 1973 of living on the Farm in East Calais Vermont. Each one of these equipment items I've driven and used.
Yes sir same here I'm 60, dad had a Massey 30..I have a 48 8n I use as a 4 wheeler around the cabin.
Nice video. It looks like the old equipment can still do the job. It wouldn't be farming without some minor repairs to equipment.
The old Ford N series tractors were pretty good for small farms.
bought a 9n for my 4 acres of veggies and snow removal back in november after a complete overhaul done with basic tools it does 8hrs a day no issues with a 7ft blade on the back scrapin snow for the county

I've got the mate to that gas can. Don't set it on concrete with gas in it, it'll draw moisture. I haven't cut hay like that since I was a teenager, a very long time ago.
My best friends dad farmed with an 8n, did it all with that tractor. I have a 1949 8n I am using and slowly rebuilding.

Never used an 8N to bale with, but I have cut and raked plenty of hay with an 8N. My grandpa used to use his 8N to cut and rake with, and a Farmall M to bale with. He had an old JD square baler.
I like the farmall m. I have an Oliver 88 row crop I’m trying to resurrect slowly, after sitting for 20 years. If I can get it going I’ll post more videos on it. I think that will bale with no problems.
Those old Humpback 501 mowers were a pain in thick or tangled hay. I've ran them a many an hour.
Yeah thick stuff last year was a little rough on it. But this years first cutting was not bad. Not much there to get tangled 😂
I going to have flash backs . I have loaded so many square bales . At 63 I hate it still. 12 to 18 years old that was how I made extra money. I know someone has pick them up and load them on a truck. Thanks for the video

Lol on the price of fixing older equipment. I bought a post hole digger recently at an auction for $130. Seems to be in great shape except for when I went to hook the PTO shaft up realized it was stuck and wouldn't pull out. Tried everything including tying a chain around a tree and pulling on it. Chain broke. Gave up and ordered a new shaft for $145...got more $ in the shaft than the rest of the unit! Enjoyed the video

From about 5yrs old till I was 40 yrs that's all my grandfather and I used on the farm, that 8n cut, raked, bale hay, chopped corn, ran 2row corn picker, hauled firewood, pulled out posts, plow and disc the 6 acre field, it did it all and I can't remember a single breakdown..

I know it does because I did it back in the 80s!
But I had to double clutch it to get the bailer going.
The same thing with a golden jubilee.
That's when a 2 stage clutch would come in real handy. 😁😀
Nice to see old equipment working. I have used Castrol 30wt. in several old engines, with never a problem. The Farmall Fanatic uses a low ash 30 wt oil in his old tractors, he seems to know what he is talking about, but looks like what your doing is working. Old equipment seems to always need a little repairing. but nothing too over the top. good video
15-40 in mine, 40psi cold then 20once it gets hot 90f+ weather

When I was a kid on the farm the late 50s through the early seventies we had a super 66 New Holland we wore that Baylor out twice and had to rebuild because Dad did a lot of custom baling with it

Yeah, just take your time and enjoy the process, if your in a rush the 8ns will struggle. But they can definitely do it! Best wishes!
When I was a kid growing up my dad and uncle cut hay with an old tri frame John deer and we rakejwd with 8N then baled with that old Jon deer trip frame. Used both tractors to pull trailers to haul hay from field to barn

I picked up old beat wagons at a auction end of the year last year. Good running gears I have to rebuild the beds though. Summer gets so busy, hopefully I can fit it in before second cutting. 😁 thanks for watching.!
Ethanol will chew on old rubber hoses but otherwise will be ok to run _except_ the last tank fill up in the fall when you'll park the tractor over winter needs to be non-ethanol. Condensation in the tank will draw out the water in the ethanol mix and rust out tanks and carburetors if left sitting.

I say 15w40 rotella with the additives still in it. Gotta look on the bottle and if it says emission system safe you know it’s had the good stuff taken out
In my Farmall H I always ran a little bit of oil in with the gas through help lubricate the valves and I never had any problem with rust in the tank using ethanol gas by doing that
I like that….. I sometimes run a little bit of mix gas in the lawnmowers, real diluted, doesn’t seem to hurt at all.
I have a small hay farm and have older equipment to cut, rake, and bale. The 8N should use straight 30W like you used. Also the transmission and hydraulics use 90W mineral oil.

You can try calling T&W farm equipment in Chuckey, TN. He has several parts 501 mowers and he might sell you one of those broken pieces. I've bought a few pieces off of him to keep mine running, although they made several variations of the frame, and I'm not exactly certain if there were differences between those parts.

My neighbor uses his 9n for raking and bailing. I have a 48 8n that my Dad restored. It's a "pretty" tractor. Doesn't get used for actual work anymore. I think I have a failing oil pump. It doesn't get used much
Hey put it to work! Grab a 1 or 2 bottom plow and make a make a garden. Drive it to the gas station to fill it up. If it’s something you enjoy put it to work. Put a hitch on and and move campers boats trailers etc. Keeping it moving is the best way to keep it alive. It can always be repainted. 😉 thanks for watching. 😁
I see a wagon hitch on your baler, use that to bring the rake home. That hitch can pull a 4 wheel wagon with 100+ bales on it.

The boot around your shift lever replace it when it rains it funnels water into your transmission just trying to help

To keep that mower from clogging maybe you should try using a lower gear.
Your triangle is called an SMV or slow moving vehicle.
It's a 10 gallon gas tank on that Ford and if you open up the sentiment bulb one-and-a-half turns open then you have a gallon reserve in case you run out of gas you can open that all the way and you can make it back and number to there is a little round hole in the gas tank if you look in from the passenger side it will tell you you have 5 gal of gas left that is a convenient gas gauge😮

Had some relatives with a nice 8N with a loader on it. Needed quite a bit of repair as a loader is a lot to ask of an 8N, lol. Eventually, tho, they decided they were better off spending a lot more money on a less capable modern tractor rather than repair the old 8N.
New is nice. Sometimes that’s best but if you can make the old ones go, I say run em’!
@@SteddieProjects Personally, I agree. I definitely snickered to myself as they learned that new equipment also needs maintenance. 🤣
Additionally, apparently on their fancy new tractor, they have to remove a short rubber oil hose to change the oil. The factory says to replace that hose every oil change. They asked my advice. I simply told them, if the factory recommends it, they should probably do it. The other option is risk the hose failing while the tractor is in use. I said it's their choice if they want to risk that.
One thing I do like, however, is the new tractor comes with ROPS from the factory. The primary driver was so reckless on that poor 8N that I was looking for ROPS systems for him to put on it. I saw him lift a rear tire on more than one occasion.
Running E 10 Wont hurt a thing except older lawman equipment

E10 is not oil it is 10percent alcohol in gas the same thing you run in your car
Clear gas is to expensive except yo have to run it in older chainsaws
I ran premium E10 in my Farmall cub ever since it came out No problems
I was thinking when you were saying the baler hadn't missed a single bale, better not say that when I am baling and not missing bales I don't say anything seems like if I do it will start missing bales and I've been baling hay for many years, had several different balers and they all will miss bale eventually

We use nonethanol in our 1949 8n tractor. Need to find one of those filters.

I new it can cut and rake but bailing was iffy... I don't like rake tins in the field because sooner or later it will end up in a tire
I was quite surprised about the bailing part personally. The rake tines do really well in a nice flat field when it’s adjusted right, but I did some baling in another field that was uneven, and lost probably 4 or 5. So I’ll have to think about a solution for that field.
@@SteddieProjectseven in flat field a rake tines can end in a way where it can end up in a tire .. I ben farming over 40 yrs and I had many flat tires because of rake tines..
Your tines are much easier to fit than a hay bob!
Yeah these ones are pretty easy to swap out, I don’t have a hay bob, but I did pickup a Grimm Tedder recently. We’ll see how tine replacement goes on that machine.
Yes, my grandfather had an 8N with John Deere No9 mower (No9 is what is on the name plate for number 9) used to cut hay 40 years ago. My dad left the No9 mower, I will soon restore it to run behind a Ferguson TO30.

Most people don't know what a restoration is though.
They do a couple repairs, slap some paint on it and call it a restoration. That isn't even close to a restoration!!! 🙄

yeah modern "spill proof" gas cans are the worst. not only are the completely overpriced but they spill fuel everywhere... i can't believe they were mandated as if fuel vapor was a huge issue.

You know I don’t like telling people what to do everyone should do what they think is best. Having said that I was happy to see you putting 30 weight oil in the old girl especially pulling the baler the thicker the oil the less blow by the engine will have. I actually put 40 weight oil in my 8N and I even put one litre of lucus oil additive but that’s because when it’s hot I only have 9 psi of oil pressure but it is a 48 so it has the smaller oil pump, you have an upgraded oil pump so you won’t need to keep it thick like mine but even on my side distributors if they have a little blow by I give them a 400 ml stp oil treatment. But if you are running yours in the winter depending on how cold it gets where you’re at it’s good to get the oil warm before you try to start it. I am in Headingley Canada so it can get down to -45 Celsius sometimes so if I need to blow snow I have a magnetic heater on the oil pan and a lower radiator hose heater and a block heater and then it starts but you are the first person I have seen on TH-cam oiling the generator and distributor good for you a little maintenance goes a long way!!! And it’s good that you removed that rusty part before it fell off and it went through your mower or rake or baler next year! Keep that old iron running and God bless you and your family!

I was interested in the video until I saw him wearing flip-flops. What is wrong with these men nowadays? I’m 43 years old and I’ve never worn a pair of flip-flops in my life. I do all kinds of work with Tractor , etc. I always have boots on.

Did you tedder the hay? That should've been done after you cut, before you windrowed it. It helps dry the hay. Your camera skills need work.
I didn’t have a Tedder at the time we filmed, But the weather was great this summer, and the hay dried extremely fast, 😅 thank goodness! I was able to find an old Grimm Tedder this fall so that should help next year. 👍 Yeah, it’s definitely tricky to film all by yourself while cutting and baling with an antique tractor😂 someday I’ll get it figured out. 😂 thanks for watching!
