To summarize about a thousand comments. Its called a striker. How do people keep all that crap in their cars? The back up camera needs to be wired to the back up lights. The camera came on when you backed out of the stall. The door and weather strip damage was likely due to a forced entry.
I have installed a few rear view cameras in my time, they would normally have a link from the reverse light, the easy DIY way is obviously to link just to the rear cluster and if someone has messed with the cluster before checking the brake switch the wire could of been disturbed. I've fixed loads that have been done by DIYers and found the link just twisted on the cluster with tape. They should try there. 👍
Probably used a smart harness like the RP5-GM31 which creates a reverse trigger output for the radio from the BCM. The BCM however will not output that signal unless the engine is running and because of that, the output from that module fails. The fix is to run a jumper wire from the light green wire at the BCM under the steering column to the purple/white off the radio. As a 12V installer, I still forget that at times. GM in all it’s glory.
@@Cheepchipsable no, he was just on the pioneers camera input. Which the camera was powered via accessory so it’s always on while the truck is on. Very common way to install these with the smart harness. Reverse input is strictly just to trigger the camera without having to hit the button, but can also see behind you while you’re in park/drive/neutral.
As for the door latch post, some firefighters call them "Nader bolts". Supposedly they're impossible to cut through with hydraulic rescue equipment, which is why they cut around the door latch. Somehow this relates to the politician nobody elects but who always runs.
I already know this customer just by looking at the vehicle they are the type I’ll just throw this here and get too it later but later never comes and the cycle repeats.
Hey!! The backup camera worked that time. Did you notice? Nice bait and switch on the wiper blades. You showed us the fancy silicone ones and installed the cheapies.
Why the plans for new oil pump and timing chain? Lots of odd questions from this customer, even the way he won't ask for warranty on the failed oil pan seal is a little strange.
Maybe customer doesn't want to have the vehicle RE-repaired at the other shop, even though it would be free - but also doesn't want to spend money to only get that issue dealt with. If likely to keep vehicle for a while, I suppose those additional things might sort of make sense? Not like timing belt replacement, but...? IDK. Maybe it's a cocaine courier vehicle and the driver wants to be as sure as possible that he/she won't end up at the side of the Interstate.
I liked how when you shut the door to avoid the crisis a disclaimer came up on the screen and 3 seconds later the back up camera worked. You fixed it Ray? Just at the end.
Ironically, the backup camera worked correctly at the end of the video. As an IT professional, I would close that ticket with an "unable to duplicate issue, device working normally at the time" note. Thanks for the great content, sir!
He had the camera view still selected on the stereo system. Whomever installed the camera didn’t wire it to be activated by the reverse lights, they only gave it a 12V feed.
oh man that wiper blade click at the beginning, insert a feelsgood meme here. also, aftermarket cameras use a tap from the backup lights to turn on the camera and tell the head unit that it needs to switch to that input. im guessing this particular head unit can send 12v back through that line, mine does not so if anyone messed with the backup lights that line might've been either severed or wasn't spliced very well to begin with.
Also, the door looks like someone tried to pry it open (Auto-Extrication style - we’d do that with the Jaws to “pop” a door off). You can see the ripples in the paint. Then it looks like it’s been hammered back in place. Would make sense that it might have bent/shifted the latches in the process.
I have that stereo. The E-break needs to be set on with power going to backup lights. Did you notice the backup camera was working when you were backing out?
I have also this stereo, there is a wire connected to the rear light bulb, the parking brake wire is used for 'not using video' when driving. ( safety feature )
The driver's door rattle can be the hinges wearing out. By 150k miles that door has been opened and closed a LOT and probably never lubricated. This leads to rattle AND hard to close. And can lead to those marks at the door latch. All kinds of fun on some of them to replace the hinges.
The reverse light's turning on actuates the reverse cam. These aftermarket units are designed that when the unit's (dedicated) wire - which is spliced into the reverse light circuit- gets the voltage, it switches the screen to the reverse camera. Those dangling cut wires might have been it, cut by the break switch installer. I personally installed one of those head units in the car referenced at the end. I'm not an anti car-mechanic, on the contrary, I love your vids - but I can tell you MANY of my own stories, when the repair of one thing damaged something else. My latest was, an AC evaporator replacement in the dash, made my cruise control inoperative (3 yrs old Hyundai). It was a dealer's mechanic's job.
If my car is clean and sorted, the service booklet and the security nut for the wheels are in the passenger seat when I drop it of at the shop, I have a feeling that the tech working in the car will appreciate it and go the extra mile. Am I right?
Yep my mechanic told me to do that and then it’ll help him remember to fill the service book and stamp it because he doesn’t know where I put it, when getting my tyres done recently I forgot to leave the locking keys out fortunately the tyre guy worked on the car before and knew I kept them in the glove box, bit of a no,no asking to change all 4 tyres and not giving them the locking nut keys ,
Not really. They do appreciate everything being to hand but it just means it saves them time. Also be sure to check the security nut is there before you leave!
Ray, your a great mech. and to tell the truth the last portion with the wipper blade install ~ captured my attention totally! This was beyond "Masterful" - - - Brovo Maestro!
The door contains the latch mechanism, the Stryker bolt is what it locks around..and when was the last time anyone called the Stryker bolt the Nader Pin! Most aftermarket backup camera’s are powered on and off by placing the vehicle into reverse and the backup lights power the unit.
Honestly it’s like not wiping your ass before you get your prostate checked at the doctors office. You know someone has to go in there, just take five minutes and tidy up!
Had the same issue with an in laws head unit not turning the camera on when it was put into reverse. We found out the camera was dead, then when ordering a new one found out some are meant for dash cam type setups and other are built for radio head units. ordered the proper camera with trigger wiring and we solved the camera issue. Nice to see im not the only one that had the same issue with these things.
Typically, the back up camera is activated by the reverse lights on aftermarket stereos. There will be a wire on the stereo that is to be connected to the reverse lights and that will automatically activate the camera on the stereo.
yes sir. looks like their reverse trigger is not triggering. most likely came undone when they replaced the break light switch, their reverse trigger was probably on the BCM I believe that pink/black is supposed to be their reverse trigger going towards the radio
I have a similar Pioneer radio in my car. I had it installed as the stock radio did not support Android Auto, only iPhones. Guess who is an Android user? They were very popular about 5 years ago as Apple were paying for makers to support their product first before Android. This has (mostly) been corrected now. I don't have that problem on my radio (so far) and the camera works as expected. There are no directional change/wobbly lines as you turn the wheel on the one I have either. At 14:41 (after the usual WARNING screen) the backup camera came on all by itself, as you put the truck into reverse... PROBLEM SOLVED!
I have a similar unit myself, what happens with mine is the warning comes up and usually takes a few seconds to disappear, however if you put it reverse it immediately turns on the b/u camera bypassing the entire le the of the warning. Could be just different software or older/newer unit.
I also noticed that, i hope @RainmanRaysRepairs branches out into VHS repairs at some point- Customer states, trailers never used to show before movies before YOU pulled that mangled, heavily worn porn tape out ... ;p
When installing a backup camera that is non-factory. They will often use the brake light wire to give it power. also, the after-market backup cameras normally have fixed lines.
Those trucks need a data box adapter for proper install and function of an aftermarket radio by supplying accessory power, parking brake status, reverse power for backup cameras and steering wheel control buttons. Sometimes the modules mess up and don't work right. Disconnecting negative terminal from battery for ten minutes may fix it. If not the radio would need to be pulled to inspect further.
I don't get these people who bring their car to the mechanic and it's full of stuff. I don't necessarily detail our cars before taking it in, but I clean them out at least.
Love the "ever since you" crap people come up with. Some are legitimate but some are pathetic. I did a favor for a so called friend years ago. I changed his front brake pads. About 6 months later his fuel pump went out. He called me up and said his cousin told him it was my fault. I laughed at him and told him where to go. I decided that day never to work on anyone's vehicle ever again. I can only imagine what shops have to deal with.
Ever since I had my vehicle in, this major issue has existed!!! (Checks records, sees that vehicle was last in nine months and seven thousand miles ago.)

Customer said replacing the brake light switch caused the backup camera to stop working. I'm wondering if there was some extra wiring for the aftermarket Pioneer radio/camera system that wasn't restored because the technician replaced the brake light switch to factory specs. BTW, per Ray's description, the odometer showed exactly "approximately" 156 thousand miles. This is going to be an interesting series of videos. Thanks Ray.
Ray , after watching the video those wiper blades were installed on the wrong locations . The drivers side wiper was installed on the passenger side . You could tell by the location of the aft arrows on the blades . It will affect the airflow of the blades after reaching 180 mph .
You better do a proper inspection before you start on this vehicle when it comes back if this is one of those 'ever since you worked on my vehicle ' customers
The camera usually works with the reverse lights on these aftermarket radios. These radios usuual are not sophisticated enough to work with the steering angle sensor, they are usually stationary.
With the looks of the car and the "You guys did this" customer attitude don't expect to see this guy again lol. He will go somewhere else and try to blame them instead. Just trying to get free work done.
On a fun note. When starting the car the last time and the pioneer display was booting up. It actually showed reverse cam. But you might have left it on that rather then the media display after clicking around there earlier.
I’ve said before that garages should have a code of conduct in place. If you bring your vehicle in for repair/ service and it’s full of rubbish. The garage has the right to reject that vehicle. It could come under the heading Health and Safety. The vehicle is stuffed with rubbish which could be a health or safety issue to persons working on it. Garages and their employees should not have to be put at any risk due to someone who likes to drive around in a skip !!!!!🤧

I actually have that exact head unit in my truck. It has a wire in the stereo harness called “reverse input signal” that should be wired into the reverse tail lamp signal wire, so when you put the vehicle in reverse it will send a 12v signal to the head unit telling it to switch inputs to the backup camera. When I put mine in I just ran a separate wire from the head unit to the positive side of one reverse lamp in order to trigger the backup camera input.
When bringing your vehicle in for detection/diagnosis of a rattle, please be sure to throw the entire contents of a community yard sale into the back, lol. I'd have started the billing stopwatch, calmly and carefully removed every single item that wasn't bolted down, went on a test drive, then calmly and carefully put everything back into the customer's Chevrolet Tahoe storage unit. That's an easy three-fourths of an hour of customer stupidity. You really should start charging people for willful stupidity. It's like spraying weed-killer, man - it may not be pleasant, but if you don't do it... the weeds just keep on growing (and multiplying). On the other hand, if customer's vehicle contains bedroll, pillow, cooler full of food, camp stove, et cetera because they are forced to live in the thing... I would make allowances, even if I had to unload some stuff in order to access a component.
Everyone of these aftermarket rear view cameras I've installed key off of one of the two reverse bulbs. You tap off of the pos & neg power from the reverse light wiring to power the camera. The camera will have an RCA video cable with an additional red wire to connect to the stereo. That red wire keys the stereo to switch to the rear camera view when voltage is applied to the reverse light bulb.
I’d be careful about speculating too much. I could see a scenario where one of those wires goes from the head unit to the reverse lamps somewhere and got pulled on while changing the brake switch. Most wires terminated with a butt connector can break off clean when pulled on. I’d probably check to see if one of those had power in reverse before totally dismissing it. While people will lie to get something fixed for free I try to give them the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.
I agree, perhaps the original complaint was brake lights not working, so the first stop was playing around with wires around the rear, where a poorly made connection/connector from the reverse lights to the back-up camera could have been dislodged.
Those backup cameras have a wire that's connected to the reverse light and is run to the head unit which switches on the camera and tell the radio to switch the screen to camera mode and back when the vehicle is put in reverse.

I always hit the thumbs up straight away because a)I know I'll like it and b)I know I'd probably forget to do it at the end🤷♂
Good. It's not just me, then.
At the end of the video the backup camera was on! Superb wiper install. :)
I expected the junk in the door storage was making the rattling noise.
Good catch on the door latch adjustments.
To summarize about a thousand comments.
Its called a striker.
How do people keep all that crap in their cars?
The back up camera needs to be wired to the back up lights.
The camera came on when you backed out of the stall.
The door and weather strip damage was likely due to a forced entry.
I was under my rig today doing some suspension work. And I hear myself " Hub assembly click" some great mechanic content man. Fun stuff.
its very heartwarming to see someone fix a porch pirates raty vehicle!!!
Nothing wrong with tape as long as it's DUCT TAPE .
@@johnnyt599 it is not a professional job unless you use DUCK TAPE (TM). True professionals know this! 🤣
@@defresurrection Indeed they do . NASCAR has been using it since day one .
What color duct tape ? Lets get technical
AHH, that's the problem, I'm not skilled or qualified mine is self taught so I don't think I use duct tape because of costs lol
it was working at the end, the back up cam
Probably used a smart harness like the RP5-GM31 which creates a reverse trigger output for the radio from the BCM. The BCM however will not output that signal unless the engine is running and because of that, the output from that module fails. The fix is to run a jumper wire from the light green wire at the BCM under the steering column to the purple/white off the radio. As a 12V installer, I still forget that at times. GM in all it’s glory.
Ironically it seemed to work at the end of the video, I don't think he fixed it though, did he?
@@Cheepchipsable no, he was just on the pioneers camera input. Which the camera was powered via accessory so it’s always on while the truck is on. Very common way to install these with the smart harness. Reverse input is strictly just to trigger the camera without having to hit the button, but can also see behind you while you’re in park/drive/neutral.
As for the door latch post, some firefighters call them "Nader bolts". Supposedly they're impossible to cut through with hydraulic rescue equipment, which is why they cut around the door latch. Somehow this relates to the politician nobody elects but who always runs.
You can tell by what kind of customer they are by looking at the rims on the vehicle
🤣
And the junk everywhere inside....
Yelp.
I already know this customer just by looking at the vehicle they are the type I’ll just throw this here and get too it later but later never comes and the cycle repeats.
I knew there was going to be some issues when I saw some nasty chrome wheels and tacky “wood” interior trim
Hey!! The backup camera worked that time. Did you notice?
Nice bait and switch on the wiper blades. You showed us the fancy silicone ones and installed the cheapies.
Yeah he's sneaky like that
Why the plans for new oil pump and timing chain? Lots of odd questions from this customer, even the way he won't ask for warranty on the failed oil pan seal is a little strange.
Maybe customer doesn't want to have the vehicle RE-repaired at the other shop, even though it would be free - but also doesn't want to spend money to only get that issue dealt with. If likely to keep vehicle for a while, I suppose those additional things might sort of make sense? Not like timing belt replacement, but...? IDK. Maybe it's a cocaine courier vehicle and the driver wants to be as sure as possible that he/she won't end up at the side of the Interstate.
Most likely just got his tax return payment and didn’t know a better way to waste his money!
I liked how when you shut the door to avoid the crisis a disclaimer came up on the screen and 3 seconds later the back up camera worked. You fixed it Ray? Just at the end.
6:25 that's called the door striker bolt (or pin). They're made to be adjustable as you found out.
When I was on the fire department we called them Nader bolts
The door strikers on my 2018 Silverado are not adjustable. 😡
Ive always known them as Striker Plates
The back up camera came on when you backed out
Ironically, the backup camera worked correctly at the end of the video. As an IT professional, I would close that ticket with an "unable to duplicate issue, device working normally at the time" note. Thanks for the great content, sir!
I noticed that, as well. Looks like an intermittent fault now. I tend, as a customer to leave intermittents until they become a real issue.
One of the most satisfying things in life, a whipper blade " click ". That and coming home to find a dead mouse in your trap.
14:42 - Hey Ray, the backup camera works automatically after all!
After a few seconds delay, and then stays on when he shifts back to forward.
It seems to have some programming issues?
He had the camera view still selected on the stereo system. Whomever installed the camera didn’t wire it to be activated by the reverse lights, they only gave it a 12V feed.
oh man that wiper blade click at the beginning, insert a feelsgood meme here.
also, aftermarket cameras use a tap from the backup lights to turn on the camera and tell the head unit that it needs to switch to that input. im guessing this particular head unit can send 12v back through that line, mine does not so if anyone messed with the backup lights that line might've been either severed or wasn't spliced very well to begin with.
Ray...the camera came on at the end of the video after the head unit finished booting, when you were doing your outro. Probably coincidence
Nice catch on the door, after the brief view of the backseat, I would’ve blamed it on the many packages stacked up there….😂😂😂
Also, the door looks like someone tried to pry it open (Auto-Extrication style - we’d do that with the Jaws to “pop” a door off). You can see the ripples in the paint. Then it looks like it’s been hammered back in place. Would make sense that it might have bent/shifted the latches in the process.
There is something very satisfying about a wiper blade click.
I have that stereo. The E-break needs to be set on with power going to backup lights.
Did you notice the backup camera was working when you were backing out?
You need the parking brake applied whilst you are reversing to use the camera?
I have also this stereo, there is a wire connected to the rear light bulb, the parking brake wire is used for 'not using video' when driving. ( safety feature )
The backup camera came on at the end of the video as you were backing it out, if 50 other comments haven't mentioned it already.
It was a dealer's mechanic's job.
the way a lot of these systems work is the splice into the reverse light circuit for the camera to know when the vehicle is in reverse.
That's how I wired mine on my Silverado. The aftermarket headunit usually has a violet or purple wire with white stripe for the backup camera.
The part the latch catches is called the striker.
Another great vid Ray.
Thanks.
If my car is clean and sorted, the service booklet and the security nut for the wheels are in the passenger seat when I drop it of at the shop, I have a feeling that the tech working in the car will appreciate it and go the extra mile. Am I right?
Hell, leave a small thing of candy on the seat with a note, you might just get the RAY treatment and have a clean battery and terminals lol.
Yes you are absolutely right! I always leave a note with “thanks :)”
Customers love it! And it saves me lots of time.
I demand more wiper blade clicks. They are very satisfying.
Nice fix with the door jamb! Great example of experience & ingenuity. Bet you won’t see that diagnosis & repair in AllData.
Ray, your a great mech. and to tell the truth the last portion with the wipper blade install ~ captured my attention totally! This was beyond "Masterful" - - - Brovo Maestro!
The fact you can perform one task with one hand and a completely different task with the other must make your wife very happy :-)
The door contains the latch mechanism, the Stryker bolt is what it locks around..and when was the last time anyone called the Stryker bolt the Nader Pin!
Most aftermarket backup camera’s are powered on and off by placing the vehicle into reverse and the backup lights power the unit.
The back up camera was working when you reversed out the stall.
Maybe I’m just a simple person, but all your content is riveting to me!
If the customer removed some stuff from the cabin, the Tahoe would probably gain 2 or 3 mpg. ⛽️
Plus the rattling sounds would probably go away too lol
we called that a sticker plate when i worked in a body shop years ago. I Enjoy your channel.
Call me old fashioned, but I would be so embarrassed sending my car to a garage looking like the inside of a rubbish bin! 👍🏴
My guess is they're a hoarder....or just lazy AF.
Absolutely, probably BOTH
but, you are okay driving around in one?
I clean the back of my truck out at the end of every work week
There will be a wire on the stereo that is to be connected to the reverse lights and that will automatically activate the camera on the stereo.
yes sir. looks like their reverse trigger is not triggering. most likely came undone when they replaced the break light switch, their reverse trigger was probably on the BCM I believe that pink/black is supposed to be their reverse trigger going towards the radio
yep im willing to bet a crimp connector somewhere came loose
The backup camera activated when he was backing out…
@@curtisclemens you need a trip to Specsavers
@@curtisclemens I think it got switched on earlier and not switched off.
There is so much junk in the doors pocket thing, that could make noise.
I also noticed that, i hope @RainmanRaysRepairs branches out into VHS repairs at some point- Customer states, trailers never used to show before movies before YOU pulled that mangled, heavily worn porn tape out ... ;p
The backup camera came on automatically at the end
When installing a backup camera that is non-factory. They will often use the brake light wire to give it power. also, the after-market backup cameras normally have fixed lines.
I would think using the reverse light circuit would be better.
@@phr3dmcc0y u sir are absolutely right, I have the same system, it is connected to the reverse light 'bulb'.
Looks like you fix the reversing camera it's working in the video
If the backwards floor mat messes with people, you should occasionally wear two different colored gloves, sit back and REEEEEE!
I don't necessarily detail our cars before taking it in, but I clean them out at least.
you forgot the empty gas tank.
You’re one handy one handed meckinick !!! You get r done
It takes someone very ignorant to think changing front brake pads can mess up something in the gas tank.
@@adamnichols476
Definitely crackhead logic 😆
Somehow they're worse if you did it free.
"I crashed my car and it's your fault!"
"Was it icy out?"
"Yeah."
"Were you drunk?"
"....Yeah."
Ever since I had my vehicle in, this major issue has existed!!!
(Checks records, sees that vehicle was last in nine months and seven thousand miles ago.)
I believe that part on inner door jam that the latch attaches to is called the latch receiver.
interested to know why your customers all seem to be so disorganized and keep their vehicles like a trash dump. Keep up the good work, interesting to see how all todays vehicles have so much electronics which really can't be diagnosed without a good scan tool.
What do you expect them to do? Their house is full!
cuz florida
There’s just messy people and I don’t understand if you took pride in your vehicle you wouldn’t leave it a mess like that. I bet all the crap the rattling noise the guys hearing
Not sure where you live but his cars look pretty clean to me overall.
Hey, it looks like you fixed the reversing camera, it worked perfectly when you reversed out of your stall.😉 Another great video👍
Tears in the weather stripping from the coat hanger trying to pick the lock :)
May have bent the door trying to get into it also explaining why it didn’t close properly. Was it the owner or an attempted theft?
Funny the backup cam started working at the end.
"Wiper blade click!"
Rainman Ray, 2022.
That's the sound of a properly torqued wiper blade!
Wiper blade click....mmmmm...that's one of the really satisfying clicks.
You better do a proper inspection before you start on this vehicle when it comes back if this is one of those 'ever since you worked on my vehicle ' customers
The last minute 'oh hey, I also want a new oil pump..' seems odd.
The wiper "CLICK ACTION" awesome.
Just look at those wheels and you know you're in trouble with attitude. In general, not necessarily, this customer but in general.
The name of the second part of the door mechanism you adjusted is called the striker plate, at least in the UK.
I must admit, I do not have the greatest confidence in people that'll drive around in such a mess of a car.
it reeks of woman driver.
I suspect a mess in the car (or outside it) means they don't properly maintain it.
Watching this channel and that of another guy in upstate New York introduced me to the Astro work lights. I ordered one from Amazon and use it in my handyman business. It is a great tool.

My biggest pet peeve is dishonest shops that leave a mess in my car, break and steal my stuff, then get mad when I call them out on it.
@@fubartotale3389 Do the crosses bother you?
