Critique isn‘t anything negative and it’s desperately needed in order to improve. Blind praise will inevitably ruin anything unchallenged. Without critique animation would be boring, mediocre and/or unpopular. The way you convey your messages is VERY professional. Nice job.
@@eren34558 Of course it’s bad. Blind hatred is essentially the same as blind praise,as is has an upside, but the downside makes it bad. With blind praise you have positive vibes, but not saying what is harmful or bad, makes it impossible to get better. Blind hatred will eventually make clear what a problem is, but if it fails to have a point, all in does is piss you off. And even if you do have a point, nobody likes to listen to someone who sounds like an Axxxhole , so it also doesn‘t help improving.
(Comment mid-video) it just hit me how interesting it is that Grim are attracted by negativity. That means humans are (theoretically) in danger any time they feel negative emotions. That could be an interesting commentary on how humans aren't allowed to feel negative emotions, although they are necessary and natural to everyone...
it also implies that humanity needs to keep an upbeat mode with their fellow neighbors to keep grimm out, except no, they don't actually have to. you can cause as much pain as you want as long its not plot relevant.
They didn’t want to touch that because it meant creating some sort of pharmaceutical company where they created anti depresants and remember remnant is f*cked up but its a paradise. Racism wasn’t real. It was just Blake being a spoiled brat
Ironically enough, the show having monsters that make people have to be happy in order to be safe, kinda fits with the toxic positivity problem the fandom and company has.
The Grimm are like the Heartless, but the Heartless are actually threatening (sometimes). We saw them kill a guy once in KH1, and they're more interesting than the Grimm. Also, Kingdom Hearts is aimed more at kids, so them not being threatening all the time is more excusable. Also, they got plushies about them.
Never forget that the Heartless destroyed Sora's entire homeworld! They might not have that much to do in the actual plot because they're actual video game fodder, but it's made very clear early on that the Heartless are a big threat because we actively see the consiquences.
Plus the threat of the heartless is in sheer numbers. Sure as you PLAY you can murder hundreds without stopping. But in cut scenes they do start to get winded after a while and are close to losing just from sheer exhaustion. So the heartless still feel threatening as an antagonist because they are only fodder from a gameplay standpoint.
@@metazoxan2 Yeah, like the emblem Hertless do have a limit to them, there's just billions upon billions of them because they're formed from entire worlds full of converted civilians. But even if you did beat every single one of them, the non-emblem Heartless, your Shadows, Darksides, Neo-Shadows, etc. are just unlimited. They come from negative emotions, themselves, so they just physically never stop being produced.
Something as simple as adding a retcon saying that "Beowulf Grimm are young and thus lacking intelligence and strength making them only a threat in numbers" could solve some of the cannon fodder issue. To compensate though there's need to be more Grimm in either an intermediary stage (like apathy) before hitting a massive stage like the Wyvern or Leviathan. I'd say something skin Twin Star Exorcists does it better, but still struggles with the cannon fodder issue. They establish several levels of power, but because the status as the chosen ones only the likes of True Serpent or Basara pose any level of threat. (refering to the manga rather than the half cobbled together anime). To compensate they show somewhat regularly lower level characters being slaughtered or injured to the point they're incapable of ever fighting again before being saved. They're no stranger to killing off strong characters either like 2 of the Twelve Guardians, and Arima Tsuchmikado himself.
@@turma8eac God, yes. D-Gray man is great at establishing its threats, power levels, and long term villains. Where there is a new enemy there is a new bit of lore or some artifact or some new character to fall in love with. Then there is the core element of the cannon fodder. It is made clear early on that it is not only the pure destructive power that make all akuma dangerous weapons of destruction, but also their origin and the fact that they are twisted souls with the compulsion to kill for sentience and a chance to gain some humanity back. Then theres the Noah, who are embittered immortals who each have mysterious motivations and some horrible past.
But on the other hand twin Star relies on the slaughter of characters TOO MUCH to establish threat. It kind of loses all impact when cannon fodder are slaughtered for the 10th time. The author does try to fix this by killing off higher rank excerocists but the problem here becomes the author is so used to showing The enemies winning as an abolsute slaughter that ... even these TOP RANKED excerocists are one hit slaughtered like grunts. It's fine to have big characters die but it needs to feel like their power and skill mattered. You need to feel the weight of the loss of a real fighter. But instead they are killed so quickly and so one-sidedly that if you removed mentions of them being high ranked you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between it and the slaughter of low ranked fodder. To put is simply you need to do more than just mindlessly throw on a body count to create a sense of crisis. You can take the easy approach once or twice when you just have other things to focus on. But you can't rely on that everytime and if you AREN'T focusing on anything else then spending an entire chapter watching people just be one sidedly slaughtered is actually REALLY REALLY boring.
@@metazoxan2 The top ranked aren't always caught up in a one sided slaughter. Generally it's the weakest amongst the top ranked that get killed off in a slaughter method like Iori. It's established very early he's basically at the very bottom in power. Meanwhile the like of Kankuro, Shimon and Tenma all are actually shown as capable. It feels like they're setting up the story as a sometimes you have to leave it to the next generation as with the exception of Kankuro all of them are they young members of the guardians. Even Mayura is shown to be somewhat competent. I agree that cannon foddering is bad on both sides (despite my lack of mentioning it originally). Especially with where the manga is now where countless island exorcists are slaughtered without even attempting to put up a fight. I do genuinely think that "the next gen" is the route they're trying to take (especially since even Tatara fell victim to the saving injured bystander instead of winning trope)
It would've so much better if Salem was the Grimm Queen; a super ancient Grimm creature who is ruthless, intelligent, and had powers no huntsman was ever prepared for and whose goals was the complete subjugation of humans, since their emotions are what sustain the Grimm.
Most critics who watch the media I watch don't convey a sense of love or appreciation for the stuff they critique, so you saying that you love the show but just want it to be better means a lot to me.
In watching Thomas for several years now, I can say I totally believe he [sorry If I do not use the correct pronouns!] loves the show. His critiques are thoughtful and fleshed out. He is usually spot on (at least from my POV.)
This, so much! Honestly, there are so many critiques who say that they criticize out of appreciation, but when you read between the lines, you can tell they're lying through their teeth, and that they are motivated by spite, add revenue, social status inside a community or a combination of all of the above. Not the case of this channel.
The main problem with the grim is that they’re completely non-threatening, only ever killing or injuring minor background characters. The main cast has only ever seen them as canon fodder.
That is literally why they work. If you make Grimm a threat to the main characters one of 2 bad things happen. 1. The characters are so weak there's no reason Huntsmen exists just give everyone a pistol same thing. 2. The Grimm are so strong normal people don't make sense, they can murder armies alone there's no way normal people could exist.
@@nahte123456 if you make Grimm threatening that proves why there an entire Occupation decade too killing them and shows the audience why these monsters are capable-monster and why humanity fears them
They weren’t supposed to be a threat in the first place the people in RWBY were far past the point where Grimm were these unstoppable creatures. They already learned how to use dust and semblances plus they have full huntsman academies ready to fight them off like during Breach. They’re like hurricanes they used to kill thousands of people at a time, but now we know how to take precautions and there are fewer fatalities. They’re still dangerous just less.
Yeah, the Attack on Titan comparisons are pretty apt because even in Season 1, you see people get better at fighting the things over time. So it's not much of a spoiler to say that normal everyday Titans stop being as big of a deal as things go on. But even then, the Titans are still a large part of the setting that continue to feel like a big deal because even after characters start expanding out of the city, we see how these things have impacted the world and the effect they've had on other places. Meanwhile with the Grimm... it's just like why do these things need to exist, again? They're not really that important of a piece of the lore or worldbuilding, they just kind-of exist to justify the occassional action scene. We never really see how the Grimm effect political drama or folklore or how they've shaped how towns are built or maintained. You'd think normal airships would be armed to the teeth just in-case they come across something like a dragon, but nooope! Just hire a huntress or get wrecked by giant bees, I guess. Those are your options if you want to travel around. The entire time, it just feels like no thought has really gone into this world, because that's honestly probably not far off from the truth. Little things like this make the world feel more alive. So when there's a major element to the world that seemingly effects nothing at all, it makes the setting feel even more fake, which just makes the show feel dry. When I see a show, I want to have those cool moments where you see customs and traditions being effected by this type of stuff, because when you don't connect these points it just feels like a bunch of unrelated elements being clumsily stacked together.
On the note of them being linked to the Folly of man I feel like a Frankenstein-esque backstory would have actually worked really well. Salem and Ozpin could have been mages trying to rid humankind of its vices, and when Ozpin backed out due to concerns of ethics, Salem could have become obsessed with finishing the spell only for it to backfire. She becomes saddled with all the impure emotions of mankind and becomes unable to experience positive emotions like love or joy. She then decides if humans cannot value those positive emotions they deserve to feel nothing at all.
I do like the more critical direction your channel has taken, Unicorn. And I do agree, I think having a more private enjoyment of RWBY is a great way to remind yourself what you like best about it, without outside opinions deciding them for you. Lord knows it's what stopped me from dropping everything and brought me back to commit to me own AU stuff. Also, I hope I'm not the only one who missed the old Volumes' way of adding textures to their models. Last time, it was a stopgap way of shading their characters, but they also used it on things like some Grimm designs and the Paladin mechs to give them a gnarled, worn look to their surface. The characters and Grimm now have a constantly "shiny-looking" appearance that has never stopped bothering me since the switch to Maya - and I don't see why they can't bring textures back for the character models. Part of the reason the environments in new Volumes are so damn gorgeous are because of the immensely detailed textures giving life and concreteness to the houses, rocks and world.
16:38 Spoiler for Volume 8 The Hound actually is a faunus, and apparently a Siver Eyed Warrior, and that reveal had just no impact whatsoever except for all the fans going "OMG SUMMER ROSE IS OBVIOUSLY STILL ALIVE AND ALSO A GRIMM" because it's not "twisting them into dark versions of themselves through their own negative emotions" but instead it's "dunking them in black goo"
"Even if it would kill m- honesty I'd thank it for killing me." Me too actually. Rather being shot at or stabbed, I'd rather be killed by the Grimm. Cause, well, quick and painless death. Yeah, that's how I would say it.
Grimm are more terrifying in fan made trailers than RWBY’s actual Grimm. May be it’s just me hoping for some more Lovecraftian beings. An entity like Satan from Mark Twain. Something straight outta a page from the SCP Foundation.
You know what would be cool? A Grimm that no matter how many times they killed it, it would just re-constitute later and come back more dangerous. The returning Grimm could already be intelligent and become smarter and more deadly with each encounter, like it might start ambushing at the worst possible times using other Grimm or conflicts as cover, attacking them when they're too tired to fight properly, singling out the wounded or trying to pick off characters while they're separated. It would solidify Grimm as an actual threat, especially if it were leaving characters with wounds and permanent scars, maybe trying it's best to kill Ruby or damage her eyes (maybe even gets one of them). Then when Ruby learned to use her silver eye(s) to finally end the thing it would actually feel like a major milestone. Sure I'm not crazy over the happy thoughts flash bulb medusa eyes because it contradicts how they worked in Volume 3, but they'd feel a lot more significant if Grimm had been used like that.
*Before anyone comes to try to "defend" Cinder, know that my main problem with her is that she is a stupidly written character And she's annoying too Like, a bad version of the team rocket in pokemon She's just there to talk about how powerful and smart she is and then to serve as a punching bag Because ✨bad writing✨
@@joyin9852 And it gets worse if you remember that she appears since the first episode It seems that throughout all the volumes so far, the writers didn’t know what to do with her And the biggest agony is knowing that she had the potential to be as big a threat as Tyrian or the others But you can see and feel that Cinder is not on the same level
I would love to see more “Special type” Grimm, and honestly I strive in trying to write my own type of Grimm for my story that utilizes human folly like you said! Grimm are so underwhelming... Thank you for the video!
Your critiques are valid mate. You’re still a fan of the show. You see problems with it but you’re still able to find what you do like instead of constantly bitching or treating it like it’s the worst thing to exist since hitler (unlike some who are jumping on the bandwagon of entitlement for views). Now your ideas for the Grimm are definitely an interesting way to go about it. Absorbing negative emotions to enhance their strength is a concept not seen often. It would even extend the character developments of our protagonists as you divulged. Now while I don’t agree that the Grimm should be insuperable; especially to people trained specifically to deal to with them ( I mean who else would stop them? Civilians with sticks?), I can understand wanting them to be a bit tougher. I can even agree they should visibly present them killing or maiming a civilian(s) to remind the audience of WHY the huntsmen exist in the first place. Because transparently, the military isn’t enough to truly stop a Grimm force. It’s kind of like with super heroes. Sometimes the police can’t handle a monster beyond standard firearms.
@@eren34558 Because unlike you.. who lives his life on his knees with never ending praise. A criticism can actually help rectify issues or mistakes down the line. He's more of a fan than you. If I had a dollar for every time I see you somewhere in a RWBY comment thread doing nothing but defend the shows blatant mistakes, I'd be rich. You're such a fanboy it's pathetic.
I know it might be annoying to bring up HBomberguy’s video again, but it was a whole thing about the “anime homework” about them replicating ideas and concepts from their favorite show without really understanding what they represent to the characters. Because the thing about the Grimm is that they are generic monsters whereas The Hollows, Witches, The Akuma’s (from Ladybug AND D. Grayman), Corrupted Gems, X-Eggs/Charas, Shadow Warriors, Kishin, Black-Rose Duelists, etc. etc. are NEVER just ordinary monsters.
I liked this, it definitely made me rethink about some of the stuff that could be done with the Grimm and how good the Apathy actually are. Thanks for the consistently great content! Your critiques being apart of that of course
It would be good if we had normal grimm, to be a disposable low treat enemies, that comes in big numbers. And the "Alpha" variants of grimm, being the raid boss, or big enemy with more abilitys ( Like the apathy aura ) and more Inteligence ( Waking around static shields at least, God )
I honestly don’t mind the Grimm not being as big a threat. To me they’re similar to the way zombies are in The Walking Dead (back when it was good). The zombies were a much more obvious threat at the start but as the characters learned their threat level decreased until it became obvious that other people are the actual threat. The Grimm, like the zombies, are mostly mindless cannon fodder. In a large group, they’re definitely threatening, and of course certain Grimm are more dangerous than others, but for the most part they’re nothing compared to the human threat, or in this case humans and Faunus. A Grimm hoard like the one we see attacking Atlas is an obvious threat, the military hasn’t even seen a force this large and the Grimm whale can just keep spawning more seemingly endlessly. That makes them a threat, whereas just a few Grimm or the “normal” amount of Grimm they usually deal with are much more manageable. I’m sure the military could handle Grimm on their own without huntsman in normal circumstances.
I mean some of these semblances are OP as fuck and some of these Grimm are just plain stupid, besides the Harvard Grad one that can talk so...damn they really are pullin’ a Walking Dead haha
I just might have to take a page out of your book there, I'm writing a revised version known as "RWBY: New Spectrum" & I envision her, not the God of Darkness, (who doesn't exist in this revision, anymore, as he's replaced with the Anemoi, Gods & Goddesses of the Four Seasons & origins of the Seasonal Oracles' Powers from Thomas' video on the Maidens.) as the creator of the Creatures of Grimm. She knows that the Creatures of Grimm are not enough to bring down Remnant, which is why she gathered followers that shares the same destructive views of Remnant like her. Also, I'm not so sure I'm ready yet, but, I might have to makes some rules for my own characters' semblance to tone them down a bit, not that I'm saying several are OP, just wanna be safe than sorry. But yeah, I hope that evens out the playing field, Thoughts?
@@chancehanlin2747 An interesting thought and one I fully support. Although honestly I think if you want to tone down the characters Semblance isn't the real problem, I mean ok some need to be toned down if Ruby could actually use her Semblance as shown she is the most OP thing ever but in general I think weapons should be more toned down. Ruby can block punches with her scythe with seemingly no ill effects on her, cut through a tree without noticing, fire seemingly endless ammo, and use recoil to just magically move around enemies. Really limit ammo, especially Dust ammo, and make it more of a trade off where Ruby's scythe is really sharp and strong but she can't block with it and it's clunky. While say Pyrrha can block with ehre shield and is really graceful but her Sword/Spear can't easily damage higher grades of Grimm easily that Ruby can. That way even if the characters are strong there's a hard limit they have of what they can or can't do. Can't shoot without ammo, can't cut armor without a big weapon but can't dodge with a big weapon, that kind of stuff. It'd also make the focus on weapons in Volume 1 make more sense.
I kinda want to make an entire setting based solely around the concept of the grim (for dnd because that's all I write for). How creatures that are drawn in by emotion in such large numbers would effect a society would be so interesting. An easy example is that publicly showing fear, sadness or anger would be incredibly taboo.
Kevin’s reaction channel is what we deserve! Great video though! I love all the points you make, it’s incredible to break it down and see how nonthreatening they really are. Also I really want to watch WITCH now so thank you for that. No dying though! Don’t do that.
No listen I'm not saying this in a bad way because if anyone is a fan of the original series it's me I grew up with it still watch it but anyone who is a real fan of the Winx can give this a chance and watch it and actually love it and even though some of the original characters aren't in the life action when I watch it I get the feeling that they still are for example Tara is exactly like flora except she's not Latina and she she doesn't have the same name as her tecna even though she is not there I still got the feeling if she is a part of it and even though this is not like the series like the original Winx Club but it's a newer version of it and let me tell you prefer this show rather then the new cartoon
@@dybala.9946 white washing is INEXCUSABLE. And having Aiesha- THE CHARACTER with the BEST backstory and is LITERALLY a the WHOLE plot point of season 2 - just be side lined to just be blooms token friend is never going to sit right with me;
You know after watching so much rwby I never seen anyone question. like how did the Faunus discrimination even happen if grimm are attracted to negative emotions?
Yeah, at least the Schnee dust mines being full of abuse can be rationalized by the assumption the company pays Huntsmen to guard those places...although one still wonders whether the cost of doing that is lighter than treating the faunus decently. With racism in general, there's no real excuse; any society that institutionalized it would have become an absolute magnet for the Grimm.
@@majine.2606 Well that would be fine but we have to remember that the grimm were around before the Schnee family tree was even planted because of the Ozma & Salem backstory. We know that the grimm were still around before the God of Darkness annihilated all of the humans who were able to use magic except for Salem & the Grimms. Of course we don't know how many years it took for Humanity to come back before the God of light transfers Ozma's soul into that guy's body, however, this make the grimm even worse because when we see the new humans and the added faunus currently have houses made of wood, weapons made out of iron, &, farming which implying that the grimm were so incompetent that they weren't even a threat and/or hindrance to humanity from advancing when they had nothing but sharp rocks & sticks, an living in cave or mud huts. It's also laughable when when you realise that team rwby and others having difficulty dealing with the grimm with their advance weaponry while their ancestors have took them down with rocks & sticks.
@@majine.2606 Doesn't help either that Atlas seems to have a thing on making everyone purposefully unhappy. Cold, cruddy streets. Abusive alcoholics roam without trouble. The military's eyes is watching over everyone, and you have corrupt politicians that will do anything to become powerful, even if it means leaving the people in dismay doing so. Makes you think how they weren't so overrun with Grimm in the first place. The negative emotions attraction was probably a bad decision made if they didn't know how to go about it.
If you want to know a good idea of what the grimm would be like if they were fully utilized, watch Jujutsu Kaisen. Similar to RWBY's Grimm, JK has a similar enemy type called curses, and they are amazing. They are the manifestation of human negativity, some low level curses manifest from minor things, which as told from their creepy chants can be from being bored of a dead end job or losing your hair, etc... However, there are also higher level curses such as the Special Grade Apparitions, ancient curse born with intelligence and capable of striking conversation that are the manifestation of the fears of the mass populace, these fears specifically are the fear of the ocean (a cute squid boi whos name I can't remember), the earth (Jogo), the forests (Hanami), and fear/hatred towards humanity which is Mahito. Seriously Thomas I highly advise you watch the show, as an anime only Season 1 hasn't even finished and you can literally make a part two to this current video fully dedicated on comparing Jujutsu Kaisen's curses with the Grimm. It's like two sides of the same coin. Also speaking of anime only, please no spoilers to any Manga readers who plan on replying please. Also at 20:11, yes! Please make a video on the subject. Much like you I too have recently taken a more critical approach to the show (out of love and appreciation) and I love seeing video essays like yours really deconstruct and explore the show's many flaws. Unfortunately the main subreddit hasn't really provided much of a source for nuanced discussion as of late. And much like you're retreat from twitter I think I'm going to be resigning myself to just lurking for a little bit, I think subconciously I've been thinking to much about Reddit's Karma system.
I mean, when comes to comparing the Grimm to something, I don't think the comparison to the Titans from Attack on Titan would be very compatible seeing as both shows kinda go for different tones, what I would say the big Grimm problem is that Ruby can basically nuke them with a glance
While most Grimm are just fodder, I do think they have a chance to make them a threat again with how they are handling the Hound and how they did the Apathy. Salem handcrafting her own powerful and threatening Grimm like the hound is what the show needs more of. I hope the acid spewing grimm from the Volume 8 mid-season trailer is another good and threatening Grimm
I stopped watching this session when river of Grimm esploded on atlas and I said "oh its a Grimm-eyser" and then realized that was the most engaged I had been this volume.
In concept the Grimm are fantastic. Especially in the concept of their existence, they don't eat, drink or sleep, they're a manifestations of nature. They're monsters by nature and yet they're barely presented as such. The Nuckalavee is a cool example. Terrifying presented by the others that it has killed many others yet is wasted by students even though it has killed countless Huntsmen
You. You’re precious. Just precious. I as well made a video on why I won’t cover RWBY either. It felt like a chore to me but as well, I didn’t say this in the video, my mental health at the start of this volume wasn’t the best and it still isn’t. (Damn you COVID. Piss off already.)
The biggest problem we all have, our nonbinary pegasus of a unicorn included, is that we loved RoosterTeeth, we loved the core concepts of RWBY and wanted to see it succeed, but all we're seeing is it dragging on its feet, devouring the blind praise "because it's RoosterTeeth, that automatically means it's good, see I'm a good fan, see?" and we're criticizing and pleading with RoosterTeeth to do better. To be better, be the company we all loved instead of... well... half-assing everything to the 1,000 fans who eat this show's current status as the pinnacle of animation and storytelling rather than the - sad mash of tropes and storytelling it's trying to steal from every "popular" show - it is right now.
Most fans admit that the show is far from perfect but that they love it anyways. Where do you see so many people unabashedly praising it as "the pinnacle of animation and storytelling"? Really laying on the hyperbole. I promise that your favorite show utilizes tropes. I never understand this criticism of RWBY when most, if not all media revolves around a set of tropes. When everything has been done before there are bound to be similarities between pieces of fiction.
@@Cepheus773 Obviously hyperbole, but there are fans who say the state of the show right now "is one of the best shows ever" and read my post again once you get off your high horse, "Mash of tropes and storytelling it's TRYING TO STEAL FROM EVERY 'POPULAR' SHOW." Nothing is without tropes, anyone who's dabbled in writing can't tell you otherwise. It's not understanding what makes those tropes work that kills ANY show's fanbase. There's even the trope "Tropes are not bad" they're not something to vehemently try to avoid, it's poorly using them that's the problem. They've even fucking admitted WAY back in either Season 4 or 5, "well we wanted to be more like Game of Thrones--" and it shows. It's bogged down the production with them trying to copycat the "most popular fantasy show" and make it "more hardcore" than the lighter-hearted action-based fantasy that Monty had cooked up for silly action animations. Hell, you think nothing's without tropes, there's a trope called EXECUTIVE MEDDLING. Guess what happened with RWBY? Executives got involved with animation and the show *SUFFERED* because of it. In season 4, Miles and Kerry storyboarded action scenes and the animators were not given liberty to do what they do best, animate engaging action. Everything was floaty, gravity nonexistent or inconsistent, and flat-out boring to watch because pausing action "makes it so much more dramatic" As much as I love Steven Universe, I don't think it's a perfect show, no show is, even Avatar the Last Airbender had a few episodes and times where the plot flopped and failed to engage, but it didn't repeat those mistakes. So no, tropes are not inherently bad, terrible storywriting however should be criticized, not praised.
@@Metroid22540 I'm beginning to think you don't even know what tropes are judging from the "examples" you provided. Gasp! A piece of fiction took inspiration from a different piece of media? Unimaginable! Everything takes inspiration from something else. Admitting that they drew from GoT is hardly the creative sin you're making it out to be. I'm not sure what the storyboarding of volume 5 has to do with the topic at hand, but I'll bite. V5 is bad. There's no skirting around it. However, CRWBY seems to have struck a great balance between advancing the narrative within a fight and just letting a fight be an all-out brawl. The improvement is palpable when watching volumes 6-8, and the tired claim that they "half-ass" everything makes little sense. Every volume since 5 has had a tighter narrative and a more focused pace. Is the show perfect? Absolutely not. Have they improved since the dip in quality of V5? Of course. The show clearly wants to improve, as is indicative of the way every passing volume seems to respond to the criticisms of the previous iteration.
Two concepts I thought of when going over this topic. One was to ripoff elements of Sea Of Black Tears from the game Brutal Legend. A goddess, mourning her part in the death of another mythological figure, she’d so many tears that it created an ocean (more like a lake, but poetic license) and she became dust. The sea called out to people experiencing great sorrow, offering them a drink. Most who drank would go mad and die, but some would gain great power (while also going mad and probably die later). Which led me to this other thought. Ungrimm Salem dropped into the grimm pool. What emerges is in fact not Salem, but in fact a grimm in the shape (and with the memories) of Salem. The original Salem is still in the grimm lake, unconscious. But occasionally another Salem grimm emerges. So now we got a Coven Of Salems, each sorta on the same page. And since we are aware that Salem can mutate grimm, imagine some of these humanoids taking on elements from other grimm, becoming the Generals. Now I can’t help imagining that the Hound is basically a really mutated Salem grimm.
i’m happy you talk about teh show honestly most people lack the resolve to critique the shows they love it’s ok to dislike certain things in a show you like
OMG! This is great. I love everything in your analysis and totally agree that the grimm are weak as fantastical/ mystical villains. Also, W.I.T.C.H.! Will you ever talk about it at length? I'd totally be here for that
Unicorn the problem is that the Grimm are not and don’t feel like a threat to anyone. Even if you love this show to death this just can’t be denied. Also unicorn you should definitely caught up to the manga of AOT it’s awesome! Why was keven under a mountain and only now shows up in the story? We all in agreement that the hound rules and hope he is not just silver eyed and that’s it, please RT do something right and don’t you dare fuck this up! 17:41 or JUMP over the shield you clowns! Unicorn when we get a all the info for summer and the silver eyes and if there are still problems with it then you should make a video on it.
my idea for the Grimm is for Team WTCH to be Grimm themselves that blend into society and prep them for Grimm attacks. Like Cinder could be a body snatcher that's been killing the maidens to become the one and only highlander, another could be a shadow that, well, manipulates people from the shadows, another could be a little cricket that hack into machines like he's making robot grim, and Hound could be the fourth member as he's strong and a shapeshifter.
Another good example of better monsters are Kishin from soul eater and Hollow from bleach Kishin are humans who killed and kept killing, corrupting them making them into monsters to the point were a full kishin can be a world ender like Asura Hollows are human souls who never moved on after death there are weaker hollows but the stromger ones are still a conciderate threat Especially my boi Starkk
this is on of the biggest problems I had with rwby, in the first seasons I didn't mind. But in atlas I expected some gore come on. Only thing close to what I want in a Grimm attack is Ren's flashback.
Also, I personally nicknamed The Hound, Baskers. Like The Hound of Baskerville. It can easily tie in with the story. What we think is some hellhound terrorizing the characters. Is a man, trapped in the Grimm. Just like how the Hound of Baskerville never existed, and it was all a man.
Let's look at a another type of monster in fiction, like the hollows in bleach The hollows in the first arc of serious were most cannon fodder until you learn they're fallen human souls. Another are the curse spirits in jujutsu kaisen as they are born fear.
instead of AOT. at first glance when "red trailer" out. I thought this show will make grim like aragami in godeater. but sadly its not. its just cheap monster fodder, after they introduce salem, magic, relic. they should just stick with semblance and aura only, and explore more of it.
Okay I had no clue volume 8 was even out, that's how out of the loop I am now with this fandom... I used to love R.W.B.Y. so much, however the way they treated Vic and thier crew I just lost touch so quickly. The story was getting so much better finally but at what cost?
The only time I recall grimm being actually threatening was during the Fall of Beacon as they wreck havoc across the school grounds and the Apathy. Both times, Ruby used her silver eyes, so it pretty much killed any hopelessness you'd feel from the situations.
I have a lot of respect for you, Unicorn of War. I can understand that it's hard to criticize a show that you love without coming across like a jerk, especially when said show has many detractors who tear it to pieces on a basis. But I've never felt that your opinions came from a place of hate but from a genuine desire to improvement. And I know that, like Steven Universe, RWBY will be a flawed series that we can still enjoy.
Speaking on the hound being a human that salem turned its negativity back on Hazel or Emerald would be a great choice because Salem could potentially use Hazel's grief or Emerald's co-dependent tendencies against them like when Hazel was taking his anger out on Ozcar, turn him into another hound
I think something akin to the Sha from WoW could have worked for the Grimm. For those who don't know, the Sha are the remnants of an Old God that was killed eons ago. They feed off of negative emotions and are even empowered by them. Their presence literally blights the land, can influence others, even possess mortals and in some very rare cases, even twist others into Sha.
You know, if you look back at what the maidens do for Ozpin in the fairytale, you'll find that their actions seem to reflect the personalities and/or life experiences of the present day ones (whether they be similar in fashion or in opposition). 1. Fall tells Oz to be thankful for all he has. Cinder in turn is shown to never be satisfied and always wanting more. 2. Winter respects Oz's decision to stay in isolation and reflect on things. Both Penny and Fria have been shown to experience their own kinds of isolation from people (Fria due to declining health and being at more risk, while Penny can't have friends because of her obligations). And because of this, both have also been shown to have reflected on and thought about their lives for some time. 3. Spring meanwhile revitalizes Oz's garden. Raven's predecessor is described as being determined at first, but giving up later on rather than finding a way to gain back her confidence. Even Raven is shown to have apparently been a "strong" person at one point, but seems to have become more cowardly over the years. Even Yang sums up this change in character in one simple question to the woman: "Did you kill her too?" Raven lost her strength rather than try to get it back. All of this really says something, and it makes me wonder how the summer maiden will be when the heroes finally get to Vacuo. Especially since Summer in the fairytale was the one to convince Oz to finally open up and embrace the world around him.
Your ideas for the Grimm are awesome. I do think that it'd suit older/more advanced Grimm better. Like, in Atlas I could see a Grimm that'd be like Hexxus from Fern Gully and manipulated industry and fed on the suffering of the faunus laborers in the mines.
Murderofbirds compared the grimm to the locus from gears of war which I agree with because there both mindless drone's (with a few exceptions) that serve a queen that for some reason or other is hellbent on making humanities life a living hell
My mind took that idea of the doggo Grimm being a person salem corrupted and ran with it. What if it wasn't just ANY person but one of Salem and Ozma's children that survived that battle. When it caught Oscar it'd look him dead in the eye and say *_"papaaa"_*
To bring up another comparison with Attack on Titan is the weaponry. Think about it you need blades and ODM gear to fight titans. Eventually your blades get worn down and you run out of gas to move, the second you run out, you are dead in the water. RWBY never addresses these stakes, and the sad part is it’s an easy fix. Their weapons run on dust, which means once you run out you can’t fight the Grimm. This would set up that it’s okay that Hunters and Huntresses and tear them apart easily, and why they need to work in teams, in case someone runs out you can rely on your teammates to fight while you reload. Aura can also help keep you alive while you are defenseless, semblances can help, but it drains your aura when you use them. These are all easy fixes to give the fights stakes. PS. I love that you are watching Attack on Titan!
Despite being mindless themselves, I actually do think Grimm are good as a thematic element. How a world deals without “negativity” because feeling anything bad is an existential threat could easily be commentary on the nature and purpose of negative emotions... rather than a story driven by an Ancient Conspiracy. Having Grimm be a thing without Salem also opens the door to more freely exploring how humans just kind of have flaws and how they manipulate the reality of Grimm to their advantage/disadvantage. It makes no sense to follow who wants to destroy the world unless you’re Tyrian (Season 8 agrees with me, because everyone defects once they’re like “oh? she’s trying to destroy the world? whoops.”) Salem is just… such a bad character.
I actually think the Grimm could've been good commentary on how too much negativity never ends well, as opposed to a flat out "negativity bad" Let's take a look at the Fall of Beacon. The Negativity caused by Yang breaking Mercury's leg is what caused all the Grimm to converge on Vale. The *Massive amounts of negativity* is what brought about the destruction of one of the biggest settlements in Remnant. Then let's take a look at Mantle. The rioting, on top of the shitty conditions, and later the heat turning off causes waves of negativity to surge through the city. So much so that hordes of Grimm are attracted to it and start wreaking havoc. It causes death, despair, and most of all, it causes Ironwood to break (or at least, it laid the foundation for that to happen) which caused the Atlas arc to go the way it did. Once again, *extreme amounts of negativity* brought the destruction of one of the 4 kingdoms. The Grimm should only be attracted to Massive, Intense, or consistent surges of negativity. Massive - more people feeling negative Intense - intensity of negativity (duh) like how Minor Sadness is different from full on Grief Consistent - people feel negative for extended periods of time It doesn't have to fit all 3, as enough of each one can spell disaster. The occasional "aw man that sucks" is fine, and doesn't attract any Grimm. This would explain why funerals and grief between a handful of people and whatnot can still happen without having monsters descending upon the city, and why our heroes are rarely attacked by them while walking around. But when the negativity fits all 3 categories, being Intense, Massive, and Consistent, well, just look at what happened to Mantle. Then, the Grimm's origin could be something like, they came into existence in the aftermath of the Great Faunus War, or something, because what breeds more negativity, if not War, let alone War followed by racial discrimination. Creatures of Death and Destruction born out of Humanity's Negativity, which itself brought about death and destruction. A tangible form of all of their Hate, Despair, Sadness, etc. The materialized form of the destruction that immense amounts of Hatred can bring about. Or something like that, just my 2 centa
3/4 of team BRNZ were killed by Grimm, but that hasn’t even been mentioned in the main series. The Grimm threat would be seen as way more threatening if it showed team BRNZ trying and failing to kill the Grimm. If they showed more well known characters being killed by the Grimm, the Grimm would be more threatening
you know how the god of darkness thanos snapped all humans in volume 7 or something? what if the dust of remnant is actually the fossilized remains of the those people? makes sense why they're magic and how theres so much dust.
It's very true that the issue of the promiance of the grimm lost it's luster, especually now with the backstory making it feel like it's more of a "toss to the wind, oh we should explain this so people can focus on Salem more" concept. And yes. they should have killed more. or hell, show people trying to *use* the grimm for petty wars, fail at doing that because guess what, they will kill anything in their path and go back to square one of "okay these things are not to be trifle with...."! I won't lie that I think how I drew the "Cursed" in my Horror/Dark Fantasy attempt they're inspired by the Grimm in some aspects, but also mixed with things like the anime movie "Straite Jacket's" Eldritch Horror-esque aspect, but that's how far it goes. Because I wanted the Cursed to be terrifying roaming round the deceivingly beautiful scenery that is untouched by humans, and the forlorn ruins of the past. If they were just death fodder for people they loose their urgency and being an *issue*. Sure... you can do smaller, more killable ones, but build up where they become more of a threat over time and not be "monster of the day" moments. In all honesty it lost it's mysteriousness when they explained the grimm came from gloopy stuff that was created by the God of Destruction. -__- And he just did it because he can "for the destruction". Not "Oh he was jealous of his brother able to create, so he created the Grimm because he now has minions like his brother and he can destroy things his brother makes." Or maybe they hinted that but threw it to the wayside with the explaination with the Djinn's "Oh he just did it because he could and would"? It's been some time since I saw the older seasons, and I did remember that the explainations got all so jumbled that I was like "....can we have it a bit more streamline, plz?"
Wait what?. The grimm were created to destroy humanity?.. but they existed in Salem's time.. they weren't really doing anything?. Then the god of darkness just thanos snaps all of humanity away anyway. If it was that easy, why even waste time making grimm?. Why are they even able to be controlled by Salem?. For all that BS talk about balance.. why didn't the god of light DO something about grimm before Salem?. God of darkness is intervening in balance if his creations are taking lives.
@@eren34558 is blind love just as bad. You'd know now wouldn't you.

D grayman does this well
@@turma8eac God, yes.

The main problem with the grim is that they’re completely non-threatening, only ever killing or injuring minor background characters. The main cast has only ever seen them as canon fodder.
They’re basically stormtroopers
That is literally why they work. If you make Grimm a threat to the main characters one of 2 bad things happen.
1. The characters are so weak there's no reason Huntsmen exists just give everyone a pistol same thing.
2. The Grimm are so strong normal people don't make sense, they can murder armies alone there's no way normal people could exist.

They weren’t supposed to be a threat in the first place the people in RWBY were far past the point where Grimm were these unstoppable creatures. They already learned how to use dust and semblances plus they have full huntsman academies ready to fight them off like during Breach.

16:38 Spoiler for Volume 8
The Hound actually is a faunus, and apparently a Siver Eyed Warrior, and that reveal had just no impact whatsoever except for all the fans going "OMG SUMMER ROSE IS OBVIOUSLY STILL ALIVE AND ALSO A GRIMM" because it's not "twisting them into dark versions of themselves through their own negative emotions" but instead it's "dunking them in black goo"

If the Grimm could find a way to feed off of negative energy through the internet, Salem could take over the entire multiverse in a day.

That's always been my take and it's why Huntsman and the older grimm are such big deals they break that stalemate.
@@chancehanlin2747 you shoud make other maloevelnt gods wanting the power vaccume for on a godless world
What i learned from Saiyan Scholar when it comes to Dragon Ball Super he always says this... "Its not the shows fault its the Writers"
I kinda want to make an entire setting based solely around the concept of the grim (for dnd because that's all I write for).
How creatures that are drawn in by emotion in such large numbers would effect a society would be so interesting.
An easy example is that publicly showing fear, sadness or anger would be incredibly taboo.
being known for causing pain would also be pretty taboo, or at least very self correcting.
Kevin’s reaction channel is what we deserve!
Great video though! I love all the points you make, it’s incredible to break it down and see how nonthreatening they really are. Also I really want to watch WITCH now so thank you for that.
No dying though! Don’t do that.
Yay I’m early! Oh yeah that Winx thing is on Netflix now
im sure they know
Actually that winx thing is number one on Netflix for a reason it's a good show. Of course it could have been better but it was super for what it was
yes and everyone's loving it..its #1 worldwide☺️ #sorrynotsorry
@@dybala.9946 white washing is INEXCUSABLE. And having Aiesha- THE CHARACTER with the BEST backstory and is LITERALLY a the WHOLE plot point of season 2 - just be side lined to just be blooms token friend is never going to sit right with me;
I’ve MISSED this
I never realised the Grimm have the 4 main colours of RWBY. This show could have been so good
I can't wait for your vol 8 review!
The Grimm are basically the stormtroopers of RWBY: only being threatening to non important extras and background characters.
You know after watching so much rwby I never seen anyone question. like how did the Faunus discrimination even happen if grimm are attracted to negative emotions?
You’re not suppose to think about that.
Welp. A week later, you were pretty much on the mark. The who human Grimm thing is a nice twist.
Ahh it’s good to see your videos again! I wish you well in your endeavors whatever they maybe, things can and will get better!!😁
Thank you for your honesty
It's real testament to the Grimm when you realize that half of the Grimm types mentioned in this video haven't even appeared since V2
I miss Kevin, he was the best character in the entire show.
Finally! I don’t see enough people talking about The Grimm being underused. Thank you Unicorn of War Thank you
I just discovered your channel and your rwby and winx videos ara amazing.
4:57 now we know that leviathan was probably sent to ensure Atlas was cut off from Mistral before the invasion
@@Cepheus773 Obviously hyperbole, but there are fans who say the state of the show right now "is one of the best shows ever" and read my post again once you get off your high horse, "Mash of tropes and storytelling it's TRYING TO STEAL FROM EVERY 'POPULAR' SHOW."
Nothing is without tropes, anyone who's dabbled in writing can't tell you otherwise.
Everything was floaty, gravity nonexistent or inconsistent, and flat-out boring to watch because pausing action "makes it so much more dramatic"
As much as I love Steven Universe, I don't think it's a perfect show, no show is, even Avatar the Last Airbender had a few episodes and times where the plot flopped and failed to engage, but it didn't repeat those mistakes.
I'd totally be here for that
Ah, W.I.T.C.H
Now there's a name I haven't heard in a LONG time
It's 2021 and I still don't know what the fuck Gambol Shroud does nor how it works.
Same
Iv missed see u talk about ruby and can't wait to see u talk about w.i.t.c.h.
Haha learning to play forever fall on the piano right now and this popped up on my TH-cam feed.
Another good example of better monsters are Kishin from soul eater and Hollow from bleach
Kishin are humans who killed and kept killing, corrupting them making them into monsters to the point were a full kishin can be a world ender like Asura
Hollows are human souls who never moved on after death there are weaker hollows but the stromger ones are still a conciderate threat Especially my boi Starkk
Naw! You vocalize my option of RWBY to a tee. Love your the content. Keep it up! Cross my fingers for no more audio problem !
this is on of the biggest problems I had with rwby, in the first seasons I didn't mind.
Let's look at a another type of monster in fiction, like the hollows in bleach
The hollows in the first arc of serious were most cannon fodder until you learn they're fallen human souls.
Another are the curse spirits in jujutsu kaisen as they are born fear.
instead of AOT. at first glance when "red trailer" out. I thought this show will make grim like aragami in godeater.
but sadly its not. its just cheap monster fodder, after they introduce salem, magic, relic.
they should just stick with semblance and aura only, and explore more of it.
honestly I appreciate your honesty! The Apathy was def one of the most scary grimm and it's a shame they don't have more of that
Okay I had no clue volume 8 was even out, that's how out of the loop I am now with this fandom... I used to love R.W.B.Y. so much, however the way they treated Vic and thier crew I just lost touch so quickly. The story was getting so much better finally but at what cost?
So close with that taking stuff from Avatar bit but it's not Attack on Titan that borrows things.
Do a video on fate the winx saga
2:10 AHAHA I SEE YOU'VE ADDRESSED THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM!
Speaking on the hound being a human that salem turned its negativity back on Hazel or Emerald would be a great choice because Salem could potentially use Hazel's grief or Emerald's co-dependent tendencies against them like when Hazel was taking his anger out on Ozcar, turn him into another hound
I am SO here for honest commentary on RWBY! Keep it UP!
I am glad there are other people demanding hound merch
Also I was reminded and by this video that I still need to finish rewatching witch
Your ideas for the Grimm are awesome. I do think that it'd suit older/more advanced Grimm better. Like, in Atlas I could see a Grimm that'd be like Hexxus from Fern Gully and manipulated industry and fed on the suffering of the faunus laborers in the mines.
Grimm Hexxus sounds cool.
Murderofbirds compared the grimm to the locus from gears of war which I agree with because there both mindless drone's (with a few exceptions) that serve a queen that for some reason or other is hellbent on making humanities life a living hell
Hound plushie? sign me up.
My mind took that idea of the doggo Grimm being a person salem corrupted and ran with it. What if it wasn't just ANY person but one of Salem and Ozma's children that survived that battle. When it caught Oscar it'd look him dead in the eye and say *_"papaaa"_*
Worked well enough in fma
It makes no sense to follow who wants to destroy the world unless you’re Tyrian (Season 8 agrees with me, because everyone defects once they’re like “oh? she’s trying to destroy the world? whoops.”)
Salem is just… such a bad character.
I actually think the Grimm could've been good commentary on how too much negativity never ends well, as opposed to a flat out "negativity bad"
Let's take a look at the Fall of Beacon.
Massive - more people feeling negative
Intense - intensity of negativity (duh) like how Minor Sadness is different from full on Grief
Consistent - people feel negative for extended periods of time
It doesn't have to fit all 3, as enough of each one can spell disaster.
I like that idea for the plush.
you know how the god of darkness thanos snapped all humans in volume 7 or something? what if the dust of remnant is actually the fossilized remains of the those people? makes sense why they're magic and how theres so much dust.
I loved your reactions to the episodes as they came out 😢
But if it's better for your mental health to stop then I understand 🙂
I felt your pain during that starting section

The hound ended up being just as you said
