Another free wall art would be to hang unexpected things you already own. For me i found an old coin my grandfather brought back from Europe. It had been sitting in a drawer for years but i never wanted to part with it so i framed it and hung it on my gallery wall (found an old tiny frame from goodwill). Did the same with a pretty old brooch i had. Didnt want to part eith it so it found a new home as a sentimental and unexpected art piece.
You might appreciate this! I’ve been wanting to paint the arch that separates our little dine-in nook from the rest of our kitchen basically since we moved into our place 3 summers ago - I already have all of the supplies needed to do it but I’ve just been putting it off for whatever reason…until today! Felt motivated at your suggestion, so I finally took an hour this afternoon to do the darn thing and I’m so glad I did! Thanks! Lol
Don't paint brick. It seals in the moisture which will cause it to deteriorate. You can use lime wash, German schmeer, or stain made for brick. Talk to a mason first.
While I was house sitting for my mom last week my sister came over and decided to deep clean her bathroom and the door to the garage (idk why). This week my mom called us up “Did someone clean the door??” She was very confused but said it looks amazing now 😂 So yeah, the little things really can help.
Thanks for all your great ideas! Just an option for door hardware. I spray painted my old hardware a satin black and they are now gorgeous. Very inexpensive option.
Yeah that won't hold up, it will scratch off in no time, no matter your prep. Did it myself, speaking from experience. Just buy new hardware. It's only expensive if you get picky on shapes. I love my black hardware!
This is exactly what I have been wanting to see as a first-time homeowner. So much is unrealistically expensive or just doesn't look good when searching for this kind of project. Thank the algorithms I've found you!
Yes, paint your doors. We painted bathroom door and it brightened the whole room. And if you'll pick colour you really love, it is so nice to look at it all the time
Excellent video, thanks! I’d love to see any suggestions you might have for Ugly old kitchens. My rental has a weird setup with upper, but not lower, cabinets on one wall, so I used cube shelving units turned on their side as lower cabinets, for a coffee bar & storage. Oh and I like your layered haircut - flattering! 🇨🇦
Oh my gosh! I painted my interior doirs last week. I was tired of seeing the fingerprints on them. Painted them a gorgeous warm green color. Frames too. I could not believe how much i loved it! There's actually paint that's specifically for doors and trim. It's not supposed to chip.
Another easy hack is to spray paint shiny mass produced door hardware. That way you can get anupdated look without purchasing new. You’ll know the size is correct.
Think about purchasing a hisense air conditioner, it can go into any window. We own and don't have central air either. We have two units, one for upstairs and one for downstairs and they keep our house pretty cool. Also, open your windows when it is still dark if it is cooler outside, we do this for about an hour before it starts to warm and it helps a lot. Black out window coverings also help with heat during the summer, get white ones though. We do use black sided black out during the winter and they attract the heat and do warm the room. I've never seen the track curtains over a closet style space. This would help add a closet to a room that doesn't have one, which where we live isn't considered a bedroom without it.
thanks so much! we actually have two as well and do these same things! unfortunately for filming i have to open all the blinds and turn off all the ACs so you guys can see and hear me 😂
Thanks for mentioning the curtains, I've wondered whether I should do this in some odd spaces where I can't put actual cupboard doors or whether it would tacky. Your comments have inspired me!
Lots of ideas and options. Cleaning space alone can make such a difference. Repainting doors and trims is a big uplift. I have always stuck with brass door handles, even if they are “office knobs,” because brass does not harbour bacteria….one of its most wonderful attributes. I am not a fan of getting slap happy with paint. I paint to refresh and to get as much light as possible into my living space. Other than that I used wall decor that can be hung to create focal points and colour. When I move, or want a change, I just take it off a hook and the space remains neutral. There’s a reason landlords may not allow certain decor…but even in my own home, real estate agents have been in agreement on the neural use of paint. The same reason recipes call for vast amounts of sugar is the reason we’re so inundated with ideas for painting everything in our midst.
Seconding washing the doors! When I lived with roommates, I washed my white bedroom door. The door definitely needed a new stroke of paint and had some nasty handles, but the washing still made a lot of difference :)
Just went around my apartment and cleaned the doors recently. I have two toddlers, whose little hands mark up a lot of the white spaces in our home. It's amazing how unnoticed those areas become, until you start scrubbing them down and they turn white again haha!
First time viewer. Not a renter but your ideas translate well and are affordable. I’ve always loved under cabinet curtains and would like an opportunity to use them.
If you have someone in your household who is older or has hand/grip problems (or maybe very young, too?) then replacing those old "office" knobs with levered ones improves accessibility, too.
Mine were necessary. I purchased for about $14 each on Amazon, 3 pack so about $42 total. You can replace a few here and there. They look a lot nicer than the basic ones, too.
came across your channel a few days & a few thousand subscribers ago; was so surprised that there weren't more, given how many good ideas you have & are easy to listen to :) Subscribed then, & glad to see your channel grow since :)
Hey LK, love your videos so much! You clearly have so much knowledge and experience with DIY home upgrades, but I'm wondering--did you have any trouble when you were first learning/have you had any disasters? I'm pretty new to these things, and I feel like I'm always making mistakes, which is especially stressful in a rental! Would love to hear you talk about how you can learn these skills without messing things up too much in the process 😂 More specifically, do you have any experience with plaster walls? They are super common where I live in Pittsburgh, PA and are so tricky to hang things on! I am grateful for all of the beautiful old homes we have in my city though 🙂
Yes! I have almost always had plaster or concrete walls out here in CA. The trick is to pre-drill a hole and then to screw in a medium sized screw. And for heavy stuff to pre-drill a BIG hole and put in a wall anchor, then a screw. I think I just learn from trial and error and screwing things up all the time haha I've been doing it for years. I am not sure I have any recent examples as I haven't tried anything super new recently.. However.. I did just regrout my bathtub for the first time and shared some learnings there! Oh and also I mentioned in my bathroom makeover that I learned the hard way about using the right paint and brushes. I learn the most from room makeovers when I am challenged with new things!
Thank you for "non peel and stick" refresh ideas, i was subscribed but had not actually watched one of your presentations until today -- very good, helpful related visuals.

Cleaning with a Mr Clean Pad is really a must for sure and your ideas of painting the doors..,changing out the knobs is something I haven't thought much about..(Your right it wouldn't be difficult in finding pretty or interesting knobs because I've noticed even at the Dollar Tree is carrying some.) Now, I have a question😊, I love your ideas for adding interest to doors. My bedroom doors are plain and flat. They have no detail at all. I thought of replacing them but they are an unusual size and it’ll cost a lot to have them custom made. Any ideas? Adding trim? Thanks, I’m really enjoying your videos!

Just found you today on TH-cam and definitely subscribed! What do you think about painting your doors with gloss paint? I'm thinking black, red or a shade of green!
Hi and welcome! High gloss can be really awesome and make a statement! Its also super durable as its easy to clean and doesn't chip easily if you add a few coats :) just depends on your style!
A good tip I'd like to share is that if your solid wood doors or stained wood moldings are looking worn you can wipe on a product called Restore a Finish and it will bring them back to life. I have stained wood moldings and doors, and until I can replace them, do this every year and it not only hides a lot of scuffs, it also shins them up.
yes that’s covered in the video i mentioned about cleaning and restoring wood and metal decor! I also showed how to use it in my dining room makeover video :)
Hi LK, You showed a mirror very quickly as an example of different frames. It stood out from the wall with brass hardware. I've been looking for one of those! Can you share the source?
Have you asked your landlord? Many landlords actually will appreciate the work, if the tenant puts it in themselves, since it cuts out something they'd have to do eventually. If your door looks terrible, it's likely a sign the landlord doesn't keep up with those things, so I fail to see why they'd have an issue if you want to do it.

I've been wanting to paint my doors black or deep charcoal but they've been multiple times already and I feel like another amateur coating from me is just going to look even worse 😢 they're currently gloss white
I understand that! If you are interested, you could take the time to strip them, or even just sand them down really well with 80, 120, and 220 grit sandpaper -- in that order. But honestly, it wouldn't hurt to paint another coat. I would just suggest getting a foam roller that is made for cabinets and doors, or you could even try out a paint sprayer which would take little to no time at all and give you seamless coverage. Good luck!
omg i wish! my landlord doesn’t wanna move forward w/ ac at this time, we asked before moving in. so I have 2 of those giant rolling ones for the time being but they’re so loud I can’t use them when filming or when I want some peace of mind LOL.. ONE DAY!
I'm very surprised, in California, that you're in a house with no AC. Seems like over the years, the owner would have invested in a unit or at least a couple of mini splits. Are you allowed to have window units? I live in central, Gulf Coast, Florida, no way I'm going without AC. As a landlord, my tenants are not allowed to paint, any other changes need to be requested in writing and approved.
I like most of these, but if you use hard-to-open curtains to cover storage that you access often, you will come to hate them. Choose your curtain type carefully.
