I’m already an avid houseplant enthusiast, with probably 50 houseplants in my 400 square foot house. I’m now in the process of setting up my first ever aquarium and I want to do a low-tech, heavily planted tank with cuttings from my houseplants helping to filter. I already have most of the plants you have so it’ll be easy. :) I’m so happy I found your channel!
Houseplants literally saved our lives! All of our plants except the submerged plants started dying this winter. Some were 30 years old and some were brand new. One day I noticed that the plants in the guest bedroom were fine. The only difference was that we had closed off the heating vent. I called a local company, three weeks later they showed up and I heard the guy scream " Open all the God damn windows!" 😂 so a new furnace later he told me that it had been leaking a poisonous gas for at least a year and we should be dead. They refused to leave until it was done.
I have pothos and peace Lilly in my aquariums and since they established the water quality is much better! One of the peace lillies is growing on a piece of wood, which looks really good as a centerpiece. Also the roots kinda create a jungle vibe and give all the baby fish a great place to hide.
Ive heard of people useing acetate(super glue) but if you grow it over the rock/log eventually the roots will reach and try to hold on as long as it stays healthy @lilmissjoodypoody
@@Jon-mu7tn thanks! I’ve tried superglue, even ones marketed for aquariums, and found it to be a messy process that doesn’t seem to dry reliably for me. Might try using something mechanical to hold the plant in place until the roots have established instead. Thanks for the idea!

I do this also but I cut about a 1.5”-2” slice of grey pool noodles and then just stick the trimmed end of your cutting through it and place it at an open edge of your aquarium. It stabilizes it nicely. And like you said I have roots start in a little over a week. I’m gonna try floating an avocado seed next.
Alocasia does great in low light, water set ups, and they are shaped pretty good for sticking out of something (plus it's an Aroid which is the same family as Monstera, Philodendron, Syngonium and Epipremnum etc).

I can’t thank you enough you have helped me out tremendously my poor goldfish are in bad shape and I need to put something in the water thank you so much
Fab info. Went shopping yesterday for plants I could grow in my aquarium along side my spider plant. Picked up a peace lily but wasn’t sure what else was ok so thanks for the shopping list 😂😊
I grow peace lilies out of the weir/overflows in my reef ready tank. They grow like crazy, constantly new leaves and flowers growing. My wife is tired of getting bouquets of white lily flowers at this point. Otherwise, I grow a ton of pothos out of all my tanks, but haven't ventured much into other plants. I'll give some of these a try to change the look up a little.
I grow a non-variegated spider plant underwater. Initially grew it semi-submerged as I didn't think it would grow, then put it fully under. Seems quite happy.
Hey greetings from Spain, your content is awesome. You´re inspiring me to make future by breeding fish too. I had always been watching aquariums you tube videos and in my opion yours is the best.

This is a great video, and hadn't heard of doing this before! I have most of these plants in my home now, and am going to try this right away-Thanks for the information!!! 🙂
I'm a big fan of using filter foam in back chambers if you've got them. Roots don't necessarily "like" light and will grow fuzzy and fluffy in an oxygen rich environment. Those fuzzy root tips will soak up exponential nutrients.
And, in addition to filtering the water, plants are improving your indoor air quality--spider plants, in particular, are good at this (NASA has even done research on them in space).
You're correct. NASA has a great article that includes a bunch of different plants that clean the air. Each plant has a listing of all the chemicals it sucks up. Houseplants are Wonderful! They're all over my apt. Even, I mean especially in my bedroom. The air is cleaner and I sleep better. Great tip. Ty
I recommend lettuce, cilantro, bok Choy, dill, spearmint and basil. All of these are heavy nitrogen feeders and "cut and come again" plants. For instance, you can harvest the outside leaves of lettuce and leave the middle and it will continue to grow back several times without planting. If you have lights on a 16-8 timer you will get the most growth and thus most nitrogen utilization.
THANK you, for correctly calling Adansonii the "Swiss cheese plant"! I recently learned that the Monstera Delisiosa that my mum has always called a "Split-leaf Philodendron" isn't a philodendron at all, but so many people call it the "Swiss cheese plant"! All you have to do is look at the Adansonii to know that THAT'S the Swiss cheese plant!
Thank you. About a year ago I took some marbled queen pothos cuttings and put them in fish tank to root...they helped filter water so I left them there...and now are growing up wall and across window top..the original cutting leaves were 3" now growing out of aquariums, they have 8" leaves now. I do thin the roots in the tank but it's not hard to do. Creating a jungle.
I'm gonna have to try out that philodendron, I love how it's splitting off everywhere, makes it easy to keep them small for aesthetics. I'm looking to move my tank under a big window so non-aquatic plants are gonna love it
I have a couple pothos I was considering putting in the tank but I thought the fish would eat the roots this is amazing I've actually been wanting to do this for a long time and have several plants so today's the day
I have a Monstera Deliciosa growing in my guppy bin, it's roots are growing like crazy. Need to divide it into 2 again soon. I definitely will be adding my Philidendron micans and pothos(es) to more of my setups.
Great plants indeed! I have Syngonium and Peace Lily in one of my tank and Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) in another tank. They are easy do grow and give a great look to the tank too
Great Video, just got some new guppy fry today, taking advice from you to raise them. Also looking to breed my CPD's just got them the other day going to try soon.
I had no idea that this many plants could grow at the top of my aquarium I'm in the process of changing all of my aquarium around so this is great news.
Amazing setup! Pothos is my jam. I'd love for you to try out the emergent plant holders I created, I call them Poth-O-Carry's. :D great for holding plant stems securely on the tank during water changes / maintenance. :D
I have a giant Monstera growing out of the top of my tank. It does make the tank look smaller, but it does an insanely good job of taking out nitrates.
In the right conditions, most of these reproduce in crazy numbers really fast. Getting them from other hobbyists who grow them is usually as simple as asking. They'll all grow fabulously at the edges of ponds too. If you can't find them from aquarists, most of them can be unburied, have the roots cleaned off, and suspended in water as-is. Shock gets about 10-20% depending on the species but once they transition to aquatic their pups/runners usually start aquatic until they acclimate to soil again. If you have a yard and the right climate you can turn a $20 kiddie pool and some DIY substrate into an aquatic plant factory for most of the year.
that was my dream to do, i was hoping it was possible. you've given me the confidence to do it! thank you!!!! i will be trying it out. I have lots of pothos growing in water, so i just need to figure out how to turn them into betta fish aquarium now :)

Alocasia does great in low light, water set ups, and they are shaped pretty good for sticking out of something (plus it's an Aroid which is the same family as Monstera, Philodendron, Syngonium and Epipremnum etc).
wow didn't know that you could have alocasi also in aquariums too🙂 Dosen't the bulb on it rot? How do you fasten the plants in tha aquarium? My photos always falls down in the water,
I love them too, they just add that extra piece of nature!❤️🇦🇺
Thanks for the video. I just divided my Peace Lilly and put some in three of my tanks, wait now to see how well they grow.
Absolutely love this, I put bunches of pothos on my large tank and it grows so nicely and lush and the tank looking clean❤️
I've used Golden Pothos in guppy/betta low tech tanks ❤️Keeps the water absolutely pristine (aside from the weekly water changes)Currently have tonnes of Pothos with my Goldfish (till they get a bigger tank).
Thanks so much! I have a project in mind involving an Ikea vase and a little ecosystem. I really wanted some real plants involved but wasn't sure what types to add!
I have so many of these plants that you mention I’m gonna put all that I can find in there thank you very much
Hey greetings from Spain, your content is awesome. You´re inspiring me to make future by breeding fish too. I had always been watching aquariums you tube videos and in my opion yours is the best.
BRILLIANT INFORMATION, SICK OF BUYING PLANTS FROM AQUARIUM SHOP AND THEY DIE….
SO THANKYOU SO MUCCCCCH.
I got all the plants that you mentioned. Thank you very much for the tips. I will try them on my aquarium too. 🇵🇭
I have most those plants I can take cuttings from and place in my tanks . Nick have you tried the glasses for colour blindness? My friend tried them at 60 and he was in tears apparently its like a whole new world
As a fellow color blinder I can second this!!! They work
I also have Pothos in my aquarium!
This is a great video, and hadn't heard of doing this before! I have most of these plants in my home now, and am going to try this right away-Thanks for the information!!! 🙂
I use Chinese water bamboo planted in my substrate in my shrimp tanks or like a bog filter in my ponds works well too
I have all the plants and you've given me some great ideas for my fish tank. Thank you
EXCELLENT! BEAUTIFUL FISH ROOM TOO! ♥
Wow beautiful Plants ^^
Like it
My friend, thank you for good sharing
Hey Nick, a good video to help with nitrates. The shop is looking awesome and I hooe its going well 👍
Thank you. I wish you could have shared how you place the plans on the tank.
Great share. Thanks!
You can also use Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) in your aquarium
Loôks really good
I'm a big fan of using filter foam in back chambers if you've got them.
In the UK we just call it a cheese plant
I'm looking to move my tank under a big window so non-aquatic plants are gonna love it
I put house plants in my backyard pond and most have done really well
I have a couple pothos I was considering putting in the tank but I thought the fish would eat the roots this is amazing I've actually been wanting to do this for a long time and have several plants so today's the day
I have a Monstera Deliciosa growing in my guppy bin, it's roots are growing like crazy. Need to divide it into 2 again soon.
I definitely will be adding my Philidendron micans and pothos(es) to more of my setups.
Man, this is a great idea! I’ll try it, I already have a few on the list growing in my house.
Good video..... I use plants too. Always looking for more ideas. I saw one woman growing her kitchen herbs in her tank. Great idea I thought.
I never even thought of doing this, it's soooooo clever! Thank you.
Great plants indeed! I have Syngonium and Peace Lily in one of my tank and Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) in another tank. They are easy do grow and give a great look to the tank too
You can allow the pathos to grow under water float on water surface. I don’t have mine growing out of tank. Yours look beautiful!!
I love your videos. Thanks for this video, I’m working on my aquatic plants. I also just ordered your fish food!!
Great Video, just got some new guppy fry today, taking advice from you to raise them. Also looking to breed my CPD's just got them the other day going to try soon.
Spider plant and peace lily also help clean the air by absorbing certain things through the foliage too
Thanks. You helped me understand enough to be confident diving into this!
Amazing videos. I been following for a few weeks and binge watch most of your videos... sooo good.
It’s like you read my mind! I was just thinking about this before you posted
thanks for making it easy and not complicated🐟
I had no idea that this many plants could grow at the top of my aquarium I'm in the process of changing all of my aquarium around so this is great news.
Awesome video nick! I like your corydoras video's
