Thanks for all the info. Just put mine in yesterday! Can’t wait to see how they do! I put a whole plant in my 75 gallon. I still need to put one more on the other side. My 2 goldfish seems to love it, they favor that side in just one day. I’ll hopefully keep an update
Only 1 minute in and I'm genuinely excited for the information. Haven't started my aquarium because Id rather not spend another small wad of cash on aquarium plants-I've already got 4 thriving pothos in the room anyways. Knowing I can use what I already have to get this tank started... Huge step forward my man, thank you!
I did this with a bunch of pothos cuttings twist tied together. I draped the plant down over the side of a large terra cotta planter that became an outdoor pond. The fish fry love hiding in the roots, too! A natural decoration for the “pot pond”!
I'm so glad you've touched base on pothos. I've been growing them for over 20yrs and I've great success with them. I'm so glad I'm joining my 2 hobbies plants and fish into one fantastic ecosystem. Keep up the great work, have an awesome day. 😎👍
Hi i know this is a year's old comment. but you seems to have the experience for my question😅. I have devils ivy in my home and they grow their leaves to 30 or 40 cm long. Can i use the dead leaves and put in my aquarium for my shrimps and fishes? will the leaves be poisonous to them?
Do be careful if using prepotted plants from a store-wash REALLY well. Sometimes growers use chemical fertilizers which aren’t compatible with fish. I only use cuttings from my plants, where the only fert I use is old tank water.
Would you need to completely remove all 'store originating' soil and completely clean out the roots? Or, would I be able to mostly (80%) clean off the dirt, then let the tank cycle out anything toxic prior to adding the fish? Thanks in advance!
@@alexjohnson4567 wash them thoroughly. The problem with using store bought is that you don’t know for sure what type of fertilizers have been used, so get them as clean as you can, and perhaps soak the roots in old tap water for a week, then another wash before putting into the tank. That’s why I prefer to root cuttings from my plant. I start the cutting with water I’ve treated with prime (chlorine can inhibit root growth), then wait until I’ve got 5 or 6 inches. When you start developing feeder roots on those initial roots, you’re close to planting, so get your next round of cuttings ready.
I feel ya, just gotta let the toxins soak out fully and let the plant do it's thing! Much appreciated, I've been stocking pothos from a variety of locations for this matter as well.@@amandabyrd9349
I agree, I made sure to wash mine clean than wash them some more with the jets stream on my garden hose in a bucket until I saw absolutely no dirt after several passes with decent pressure slapping the roots
fun fact! Pothos will actually grow underwater! Ive had 3 pothos fully grow under water, they just have to be grown in water or the tank for a while! My biggest one sprouted about 5 new leaves underwater as well!!
I am setting up a 65 gallon and yesterday I added philodendrons. I am pleased that you perfectly agreed with what I did. I also put cuttings into the HOB for rooting and temporary holding tank. My weak spot is the lighting. I think I will add a light hanging from my ceiling.
Been doing this since 2017. I grew a one leaf cutting in HOB filter into a 30 foot vine, so I know it works. When I took water sample to store she said "How do you have no nitrates. All tanks have some." I didn't tell her my secret.
I have grown a lot of pothos from cuttings in a glass bowl placed in the kitchen window, but I never thought I can use them in a fish tank. These goldfish eat everything, especially floating leafs,so,that’s a good idea and thank you.The roots are in the water and the plants are draped over the edges on the outside, now I have a nitrate filter without fear of being eaten by my fish.
I've tried it but they always fall in or out. I was hoping you would show a method of attachment other than just resting it on the rim of the tank. That has never worked for me.
What I did, and it might work for you, Once the roots become long enough to reach your substrate, put a weight on the root to encourage the rooting into the substrate. What Chris did not say , Yes the Pothos will consume nitrates, however if the roots are free floating they will not perform to their full potential of nitrate removal. Once however, your Pothos is rooted in your substrate, the Pothos becomes established.. More Nitrates are removed by the Pothos from an established Pothos than those with free floating roots. In my experience.
@palmer aqutics I know this is an old video but I've got a tip for you. There's an incredible product that really encourages full plants. And full disclosure, I am not a fishkeeper but I have a bunch of houseplants and an outdoor garden. I noticed some of your pothos vines on your large tank had bare spots. It happens ALL THE TIME to anyone who keeps pothos. Lol. You could A-cut those and reroot those bare nodes and they will start new vines or B-get some crazy keiki cloning paste. It works great to get those nodes working again and will fill in the bare spots, giving you more leaves for photosynthesis. It's a paste that goes no the actual node so i don't think it would effect your fish as long as its keep out-of the water. It's also not water soluble... Also, to anyone who doesn't know much about pothos, trimming your vines encourages new vines to split off from lower in the plant. Every time you clip the end of a vine, it sends a hormone back down towards the soil and tells the plant that it needs to activate an older node. If you trim often, you could hypotheticaly have a new vine split from every node, making your plant fuller. Also, I know you mentioned your partner is the plant person so I'm sure she knows all this but hopefully this can help you or someone in your audience if they have any issues. Pothos are incredibly awesome plants....and finally, try an N'joy pothos. They are one of my favorite and SO pretty.
Pothos are flexible, malleable, and so beneficial for your aquarium water chemistry! Absolute must for all tropical tanks, plus you can gift them to family and friends👍
Pothos love high light, but they also do well under low light conditions. So if you don't have risers for your light, I'm sure the pothos would still do fine with the ambient lighting.
Ive had a pothos plant for YEARS, and we just started a new tank - I didn't want to spend lots of money on plants only to do something wrong and have them die 😵💫 So thank you for this! I can experiment a little with a few cuttings (darn thing needs to be trimmed anyways!) and lighting!
Probably not what you were going for with this vid, but you made me realize I have a pothos and not a philodendron. So thanks for that lol. Just made a cutting for my small betta tank and I'm excited :)
I have multiple large cichlid tanks and I used to have to go to great lengths to keep the water quality good. After adding pathos to all my tanks, funny enough it dropped my need for maintenance and water changes so much that I actually miss the time I used to spend working on my tanks.
Hi there! Beautiful fish room! Just wanted to let you know that pothos WILL grow under water, especially if it's new growth. I put a couple of cuttings in my tank about 2 months ago and it's filled with leaves and insane roots! I don't need any fertilizer and the lighting comes from a west facing window. The tank is within inches of the window but not in direct sun. My fish love to play in the roots; shooting in and out between them and racing around the tank! I hope this is helpful!
First time fish keeper. Great video you definitely know your stuff. I will soon add a pothos to my 55. It has about another week before I add fish. Looking forward to seeing your plant channel.
My pothos has been in my aquarium for at least a year, and has barely grown. It has a light but I think I still need to make it brighter. Thanks for the great advice.
Awesome, I’ve been raking clippings from my wife’s pothos plant for a while now but I use very little light. I’m going to try adding more light to them 👍
I'll keep saying it - Hygger lights for the win - nice vid, I am using egg crate as support for the plants in my tanks - a strip of it across the lips like a lid and you have plenty of little "stem holders" - I know I keep promising vid, my new fishroom is almost built and tanks moved so it is coming
Great video, thanks! I've just bought a rooted pothos cutting... straight into the fish tank! We'll see how it fares! Hopefully it'll be ok in subdued lighting!
Always great advice from you. First time I did pothos in my tank I used the roots already in the pot but didn't do such a good job cleaning it so it mucked up my tank a little and the roots are still discolored and a little brown. I decided on the snip method and I have much nicer looking roots. thanks again!
Yeah, the roots can still be a little brown, so I wedge some Java rhizome into them, looks nice, covers any brown and I'll take any opportunity to put more plants in my tank 😁
mint can be half submerged. the stem that is rooted sends out shoots and they can start underwater. i'm growing an entire cutting with many shoots underwater right now as an experiment!
And how do the aquatic life (fish) like the extremely bright lighting? If they are good with it, I have 2 garage lights I am ready to repurpose for this amazing project..
I propagate my photos at home just for decor, just take some clippings and put in a vase! they are very decorative and when they have nice roots you can plant them in a pot :)
I see you like house plants, ever thought about doing a beautiful planted vivarium with dart frogs? I made the switch from the fish hobby there is a lot of overlap.
I know this is an older video, but I figure i would chime in. I recently did this and it seems to be working out great! I bought a potted pothos from home depot and it was just like you showed. A bunch of little sections with decent roots. I busted one section off and washed off the dirt and I was surprised at how fast the roots began to thrive. It's in a 10 gallon tank that has a betta and a siamese algae eater along with some assassin snails and 1 nerite. The water has not been changed much in months and it already has quite a bit of Java fern, duck weed and another rapid growing plant I can't remember the name of lol I'm doing all this though because I'm about to start a dirted tank (29 gallon) and I will be transferring about half of everything into the 29 gallon along with the other 3/4 of the pothos after the tank is a bit established. Anywho, thanks for the info, I had seen other videos of yours that gave me this idea and it has been great so far, I can't wait to get my 29 gallon going because I will be doing a more pacific island/asian theme for my 10 gallon betta tank with bamboo and a nice Asian style hut with plants glued to it. I love this hobby and everyday I seem to be drawn in just a bit more.
Good evening, I recently bought plans, and their roots are pretty long. Can I just cut the roots to plant them or do i have to make the whole big enough in my gravel for the entire root.
omg, your home looks so amazing and very relaxing! I love that... I bet your guest would never want to leave. lol I have a small tank/29 gallon and would love to try this but I do have a dog who likes to bite and chew on my plants and I heard the pothos can be harmful to pets. so I put in a spider plant. do you have any recommendations for other ideas? I do want to change my hood light to what you have. it's better than a stander old fashion hood and makes the tank more alive.
I have a 10 gallon that I’m starting up with the cycling. Would you recommend to put pothos in the tank now with 0 parameters, or wait until there’s at least some nutrients?
Just rinse off the soil and cut the roots a bit and place in the aquarium. They'll grow all over the place and watch out for salt treatments because that will kill the pothos quickly..
I also use the Hyyger light on my overstocked 29 gal tank. Light is on 6 hours a day. Wondering what Nitrate Reduction you're seeing by adding pothos to your tanks ?
I've ad a pair of the 10gal Hygger lights and those things are troopers. Had them for over two years and haven't been gentle to them and they still are my go to over any others I have, save for a Vivosun grow light xD
They actually will grow completely submerged. Learned by accident. Once the leaves break the water it will shed the lower leaves and look like crap but they will definitely grow submerged
So anyway Chris, in a totally unrelated matter, I actually love your set up, surround your TV. However Sir, If you got something on the TV you really want to be watching, how are you not distracted by the surrounding beautiful aquariums ? 🙂❤️
They do work great. I have a plant called "Swiss cheese philadendrion " same as Pothos I belive. You should check them out. If mine grows more this summer in pond I'll save ya some cuttings.👍
I have them in my turtle tanks and have noticed they are eating them a little bit but not much and I’ve heard they may be mildly toxic but my plan is to buy those black slotted boxes online that suction cup to the aquarium at the waterline(about half way up the side) will they do well growing roots through those small black boxes? Also I have hyyger led full spectrum lights and I usually keep them at 40-50% brightness. I know they grow through a screen top but I’m going to be using a glass lid soon will the light do ok going through the glass? Thank you
Lots of light and a tank with a heavy bio-load. The pothos in my turtle tank absolutely took off and is 4x larger then my other pothos in grow out tanks. So now I added a plant light above those and they are filling out now. I agree they love light.
I thought I had some kind of ivy until I saw this. What I did was use a common water bottle to develop roots. Dangled them in there and it was huge. Then transfered to tank. Still determining their effect on nitrate levels.
Hi im from india kerala i had two types of pothos the normal one and marble pothos the both pothos grew well in outdoor ponds when its summer time in direct sunlight all you nees to do is spray water during noon time and afternoon by the way the pothos leave long roots which will take over under the aquarium if theres substrates
I have done golden and neon pothos. I am doing a new 25 gallon tank, it will be heavely planted with blue dream shrimp.... can i do a satin pohos? will it work as well?
I did that in the past and pothos is amazing in the house - I think (I am not sure) if you put pothos like this in water you must avoid direct sunlight on the plant
I just added a small pot of pothos to my dirted tank. I used egg crate diffuser to keep them above water. I am not sure how I can get my light elevated above them???
I'm a little new to plants terrestrial plants in aquarium, but if you just do what you did with un potting it and just putting the roots right in water would it not shock the roots and kill the plant?
I have two questions 1- what do you recommend to get the plant to stay? Because my filtration has a flow that may push around the plant 2 I have two aquariums a tropical tank around 79 degrees and a cold water tank around 65 degrees. Which would the pothos prefer?
My Pothos plants are doing very well in my aquarium! They add a lot of oxygen to the tank and the roots are growing fast! My favorite fish store in Louisville has an aquarium with Pothos plants that have roots that have made it to the substrate and the leaves are scaling the walls! Pothos is currently the only plant I have in my 30 gallon. What should I add next? 🤔
I took some cuttings from my varigated pothos and hung the stems in the water under the light in my 10-gallon guppy tank. A few months later the vine had actually spread underwater with really long stems and leaves just under the surface like a water lily. The fry love hanging out under and on the leaves and it holds the water lettuce to one side of the tank. The roots are massive. I worry if having the pothos leaves in the water is safe for the fish so debating whether to remove it.

How often do you do water changes with growing Pothos in your aquariums? And for a non dirted tank do you gravel vac?
Tried the method of using a whole pot of queen pothos in my 40 gallon breeder tank and loving it! Thank you!
I have had pothos for years and always wondered if I could add them to my tank safely!!! Thank you!

Tape them to top edge tank

Try using a feeding ring or of you have a glass canopy try resting it in the canopy with roots in the water? Best of luck👍

Plant in the substrate with a plant weight
This is the first time ive ever heard a neon pothos referred to as "fancy". Lol
have 2 tanks w pothos plants and the water in crystal clear w little water changes ....love them and super cheap idea
@palmer aqutics I know this is an old video but I've got a tip for you. There's an incredible product that really encourages full plants. Buying one tomorrow! Thanks. And I will cut in-between those nodes :)
Yes, first time for me, I just bought 4 for 20$. I did put them in a filter, but now I need better lighting! Thx for the info!!!🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

I ordered a cutting online and sat the stem, in the tank. Now ordered a third cutting! They seem to do OK, sending down long roots!
Excellent!! Picking up one tomorrow just for my aquarium!!
Try ordering online... more variety.
Awesome video. I'm not overly fond of vining plants, so I put a big ol peace lily out the top of mine. I've seen monstera can be quite good too.

This is very informative. Are there any other terrestrial plants you’d recommend growing half submerged? Thanks
mint can be half submerged. the stem that is rooted sends out shoots and they can start underwater. i'm growing an entire cutting with many shoots underwater right now as an experiment!
You could use Monstera deliciosa as well...
Peace lilies have good results, from what I've seen.
monstera, peace lillies, spider plants, philonendroms

They actually will grow completely submerged. Learned by accident. Once the leaves break the water it will shed the lower leaves and look like crap but they will definitely grow submerged
So anyway Chris, in a totally unrelated matter, I actually love your set up, surround your TV.
However Sir, If you got something on the TV you really want to be watching, how are you not distracted by the surrounding beautiful aquariums ?
🙂❤️
Taking my pothos start out of the jar by the window & in the tank it goes!!!
They do work great.
I have a plant called "Swiss cheese philadendrion " same as Pothos I belive.
You should check them out.
If mine grows more this summer in pond I'll save ya some cuttings.👍
Can I put it in a pond outside under direct sunlight? Thanks for the video btw!
Thank you
Holy shit dude! Awesome job! I built a system for my tank using pothos. Happy I found your channel.
...I want your plant/aquarium corner! It looks like it's a lot of work tho! Fabulous!
Lots of light and a tank with a heavy bio-load. The pothos in my turtle tank absolutely took off and is 4x larger then my other pothos in grow out tanks. So now I added a plant light above those and they are filling out now. I agree they love light.
That seems to be the most common issue!
I have a turtle tank also. I’d love to put pothos in his aquarium… does your turtle eat it?
@@FEEFS. not even interested in them. The roots have taken over the one side and are now in the substrate.
@@williamjamescavejr9423 ohh okay. Maybe I’ll try it. Thanks!
Thank you 🙏🏼 that was so helpful. I’m going to cut my plant right now 😊
I thought I had some kind of ivy until I saw this.
My pathos is planted into my substrate and is doing well
I have done golden and neon pothos. I am doing a new 25 gallon tank, it will be heavely planted with blue dream shrimp.... can i do a satin pohos? will it work as well?
"Don't let the leaves touch the water" Pothos will literally live underwater😮😅
I did that in the past and pothos is amazing in the house - I think (I am not sure) if you put pothos like this in water you must avoid direct sunlight on the plant
Great video mate what was the brand light you got?
I just added a small pot of pothos to my dirted tank. I used egg crate diffuser to keep them above water. I am not sure how I can get my light elevated above them???
I'm a little new to plants terrestrial plants in aquarium, but if you just do what you did with un potting it and just putting the roots right in water would it not shock the roots and kill the plant?
I have two questions
1- what do you recommend to get the plant to stay? Because my filtration has a flow that may push around the plant
2 I have two aquariums a tropical tank around 79 degrees and a cold water tank around 65 degrees. Which would the pothos prefer?
I find they grow best when rooted bfor they go in .. as long as they have roots started they ten to do well....🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤
How often do you do water changes with using Pothos and with a non dirted tank do you gravel vac?
Do you use a filter and do water changes???
I use a plastic feeding ring to hold my pothos in aquarium. It keeps the leaves out of the water and the roots stay stationary
Does the plant need any food in the tank ? Like fertilizer
Very helpful video 👍
I added the pothos but trimmed the roots a bit. Will it affect the growth?
Does the pothos assist in NITRITES removal?? IVe never used pothos. Nice clip🤙
@@Steves_fish thanks..finally got the nitrites to level out.👍
My pothos are fully submerged 😅and doing good.
But the growth is very slow.
And yes they do need good light.
Low light will even kill them
can you put strelitzia?
