    I use aquarium tubing suction cups to anchor my house plants at the top of my aquarium. What’s nice is you can adjust the height of the plant by sliding the suction cup up or down on the aquarium wall.

    You should also thoroughly rinse all the soil off the roots and give the leaves a good rinse as well before putting plants in a fish tank. That’s to wash off any fertilizer which may be in the soil and/or insecticides on the plants which may be toxic to your aquarium inhabitants. Some people will actually put newly purchased plants in quarantine for several weeks. “Bargin bin” plants may be on sale because they’re stressed due to some insect infestation. The quarantine is to avoid introducing plant pests (thrips, mites) to an already established healthy, thriving system.

    Plants grown in the top of an aquarium look great and are great for fish and water quality. Personally I like to design and 3D print holders for the plants and this also works well.

    I am a horticulturist and registered natural scientist (Biology). I have done quite a bit of research over the years growing plants to filter water. If given the space and enough light my research has shown that Spathiphyllum are by a long shot the most suited for removing nutrients from fish tanks and fish ponds in warm climates. I am using them in a huge biofilter that I build to filter water in a a koi pond I built for a friend. All the other plants other than the Caladiums which require and winter rest period are good choices as well.

    Great video Nick! If you want Vanilla Beans you will have to try and pollinate the flowers your self as in the wild they are pollinated by the Mexican melipona bee, there is a large variety of plants you can use such as sedges, aquatic stem plants and any other aquatic plant that grows emerged, if you have enough lighting you can even use some water loving trees if you have enough light and space, your tanks are coming along nicely and the plants add a great touch to your room and make it look so much more natural with all the roots in the tanks, the fish seem much more happier with that little bit of natural cover as well, nice job! 🙂

    Started doing this around February - april 2024
    I have a bunch of spider plants growing out of my tanks. One bunch has bloomed.
    Three small pothos, and one larger vine of pothos thats over 2m long now, started about 30cm in April 2024, now November 2024 and has just put another air root into a second tank. I also have a philodendron, that had three leafs when i got it. I got it the same day as the three small pothos, and is almost a metre long now, whereas the pothos propagations started with 1-2 leafs, and is now just getting their 5th leafs.
    For anyone planning on doing this, dont touch/move them once they're in your tank if you can help it. Unless it gets knocked into the water, because they wont grow fully submersed. Just set and forget, make sure pothos/philodendron types have at least the growing node out of the water, and the node with root in the water. Once theres some air roots, let it keep some air roots out of the water because it helps encourage faster growth. Make sure all leafs are above awaters surface, any leafs submerged will die off eventually. They might seem fine for days/weeks/months but will be dying off slowly over time.

    Working in the pet store we also had a plant section with a plant manager. The plant manager there was astoundingly knowledgeable of houseplants. I knew more of aquarium plants as I was the aquatics manager. He would give us cuttings of anything that he thought would do well out of the aquarium. Honestly, any houseplant that likes super high humidity and can handle being wet does well out of the aquarium. If you're curious, take a cutting and just stick it in the water, I guarantee you you'd be surprised how well they do.
    I've even grown English ivy in the aquarium. We got a hold of a variegated form and it looked fantastic

    That room would be ideal for some hanging baskets of nepenthes. They'd help with any small insect issues also. The indirect light and humidity would cause them to grow like crazy and produce tons of traps. We have Spanish Moss that grows from the old trees in the Deep South of the U.S. and its also good about soaking up some moisture in the air. They're basically an airplant taht looks gray but when it's wet you can see that its green and alive. Very nice setup you have and your videos have been invaluable to me. Thanks! 😊

    Great job. The scope for using plant growth to reduce nitrates is immense. I had a pond in North England, about 1000litre (250 gallons), it was truly green in early summer…bought some watercress from the supermarket and chucked a handful into the pond…it went bananas and the algae growth disappeared so the nitrate fell to zero. Benefit, it’s easy to pull out if it’s gets too out of hand and in the winter it dies back to root.

    I've had to get creative with my plant choices because, as you mentioned, many of the popular house plants are toxic to cats. I've had massive success with sweet potatoes! Just stick them in the tank so the tuber is half-in and half-out of the water and give it a bit. Within 5 days, you'll see roots and vine buds starting to sprout (which will also be your sign if you've got the potatoes in upside-down or not). I'm about 3 months in, and I've got multiple vines now that are longer than a meter. Apparently if I take a cutting from the vine and stick that in water, I'd be able to grow actual sweet potatoes.
    I know you gave a bunch of vegetables a try awhile ago with mixed success, but I think you'd have a lot of fun with sweet potatoes! Mine have grown a nice green biofilm and my caridina shrimp are always hanging out on the tubers and among the roots grazing on them.

    • @kevinshady4627
      @kevinshady4627 ปีที่แล้ว

      From the internet:
      “Although the sweet potato itself is not toxic to felines, the vines of the sweet potato plant contain the toxic principle LSD. Consuming a small portion of the sweet potato vine can cause a dermatitis-type reaction, causing the cat's skin, mouth or throat to blister and swell upon contact.”
      It also says potato can be fatal if ingested lol.
      Protect those cat babies.

      I have one avocado, already planted in soil, it was growing a root for a month now and stem is growing slowly. I live in Atlantic Canada, so it isn't really ideally warm in the house. Still it is growing under a neon light, keeps it a bit warmer than rest of the house. I have a few seeds that are more recent, with tiny roots started to grow about a week ago, I guess I will wait for them to grow longer roots and will stem them into my 50 gallon community thank. I am planning to drill holes on a drift wood I found on a nearby beach (I boiled the wood branches) and attach the branch floating on top of the water. I will wait for my avocados to have longer roots first. I also recently planted green and purple basil seeds, dwarf tomato seeds, and parsley seeds, I might plant my basil seedlings the same way as well. I'm not sure about parsley or dwarf tomato, though. Thank you so much for asking.

      @aigai83 You are welcome.
      That sounds interesting.
      I know that you can grow Mint in your Aquarium, which I have tried myself, and it does work.
      You can also grow an Avocado plant with developing water roots by growing it from seed, as you will see in this link. th-cam.com/video/FCIBbSJiDMI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LnUqvgIXpWdoU63c

      Succulents too? May I ask which type(s)? I have a ton of them in the garden of all sorts of varieties. I wouldn’t think they do well in an aquarium as they usually don’t like ‘wet feet’.

    I found a sweet potato vine plant in the clearance section of Walmart garden, and decided to see if I could grow it out of a fish-tank. It worked amazingly well and the plant is HUGE now, it had a big beautiful bunch of roots that flow in the water. And it’s making its way across the top of the tank now it’s quadrupled in size since I got about 3-4 months ago. I use it in my African cichlid tank and they leave the roots alone.

    Can you show us how to start planting house plants over aquariums? Do we need to start slow? or just toss it in? Do they need to be only root in? or can they be submerged?

    I also really like the look of the plants coming out of the top of the tanks. I have pothos in a few tanks and one that I have had success with as well is the snake plant. thanks for the list and showing the ones you have. I am curious about trying a few of them. the walking iris looks cool

    After your first video I put pathos in my tank and I have since found little clips that hold on the side of the tank that will hold several little stems at a time which has been wonderful. all my tanks are getting plants.

    Great video, very informative. I have a branch coming out of my 5 gallon shrimp tank which is like a natural flower pot, so I planted a tiny Chinese money tree cutting in it. The plant grew incredibly in a year. Roots are coming down the tank and shripms seem to ove to be going into the roots. I had a venus fly trap planted there as well, but that plant died very fast. apparently, they don't like either a damp or nutritious environment.

    Nice one Nick. Every plant I’ve tried goes gangbusters. Spider grass flowers 7 days after sticking in the tank. I even took a few Agave pups and stuck them in. They look awesome. Need small baskets for them though. Thanks for your efforts.

    Fascinating!
    Since you've had some success with the vanilla bean orchid, have you considered trying any other orchids? They could be an amazing addition of color and beauty to a fish tank setup. I have a few orchids that have done well for me in my bay window but the thought of trying them in a fish tank is a little bit scary for me, I don't want to kill them after all.
    Please let us know if you can do it!

    Great idea. I will try it thanks. But a lot of your tank herbs have yellow leaves which means they are lacking specific nutrients or possibly experiencing nutrient toxicity , lack or light or have disease. Still it looks great though. Keep it up.
