    Great points! I think that the concepts you mention here about preparation also apply to any kind of training...whether it's learning to drive a car or even a motorcycle, having the right mind set will help you succeed. Also, being able to get through any training at the pace they require prepares you for the real world where it really matters...IMHO.

      As Henry Ford said - 'Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.'

    I had been waiting for this video, thank you Kelsey! It was a nice natural progression from the checkride prep video, especially since a lot of things from that checkride prep video reminded me of study habits taught to us in turbine ground school class at my collegiate flight school.

    What makes me the most nervous is pretty much what you described, being overwhelmed by the information. I think the classes I took helped me get a handle on it though, that is on how to study for airline ground school. A lot of good things were brought up in this video that I will try to do when I get to that point, like searching for flight manuals on the aircraft type I would be training on as early as possible.
    The other thing that makes me nervous, is if I go the Air National Guard or Air Force Reserve route after I finish my bachelors. If I do that, I don't want to fail at something that has been a dream for a long time, and washing out during any of the military training.
    With either/both routes, I also fear I won't like the lifestyle. I hope I will, and think I will, but we will see. I love aviation, and am passionate about it in that I always try to strive for excellence. So I am hoping it won't be an issue.

    Great video Kelsey! I know exactly what you mean about staying ahead of the game. For my private and instrument I went with the motions not really knowing what to expect and had ok check rides. Now I am preparing out the wazoo for my ATP training. 6 months ahead I finished all my writtens (CAX, FIA, FII, IGI, FOI). I’m going through the instructor handbook, plus all my supplement books for the aircraft and the Garmin systems onboard.
    I don’t want to miss a beat when I start my professional pilot training. I’ve got too much financially invested to play it casual. This is my dream job and my future and I want to walk into training day one and feel prepared.
    Thank you for all the informative vids and, as always, keep the blue side up!

    • @74gear

      in some cases you are assigned it before training. In some cases that regional only has one type or you plan to request that type and you know you will get it. Or if you don't know any of that information than you can't really prepare too much but usually you will have adequate time to study and use the tools I talk about in the checkride prep video.

  • @jnewmy14
    @jnewmy14 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    That would be the worst, put in all that time and effort to get to the airline to not put in just a little bit more to get it done and wash out. I imagine you have all the time in the world for trips and slacking off after you have completed training and on your days off. What a bummer. Great video and insight. Hopefully it'll help someone see what not to do. Keep up the great work.
    It would be kinda cool if you could say something in your video intro like" Coming to your from Dallas" or "From Paris" or wherever you may be. Would be cool to be able to see where your travels take you. Just a idea.

      🤔 I thought of doing that at the beginning when I first started Josh, but then I wanted to make the video as concise as possible more about getting the viewers the info they need not about what I am doing or where I am going... but maybe in the future ya.

    You asked what about this makes me the most nervous?It is definitely being washed out. I love aviation, am a good pilot and I am self-disciplined, but I am also timid about not being able to meet the standards. Maybe it's just part of being a paranoid pilot? Could you talk about the washouts a little bit more?

    Back when I was a gate agent at US Airway, Air Whisky was the only airline I knew that was actively hiring co-pilots, but 20k your first year?! yikes! I am sure flight school cost that much. As far as the depiction of the guy who didn't like getting shots. That reminds me of a story my wife told me of a guy who behaved that way at her job where she was a Dental Assistant, the guy was crying about he didn't like needles, but guess what? The guy was covered in tattoos...um, last time I checked tattoos involve needles.

      Yep. I've heard the same thing from several pilots that had put a LOT of ours on Flight Simulator. The latest versions are so sophisticated that you really do feel that you are flying an aircraft, and if you screw up - you're down.

    My concern is my age (50) and being able to assimilate all of the information. Granted, I was an aircraft mechanic for the Dept of Defense for 13 years (then 18 years in IT) and will be "beginning" with credit for private pilots certificate at ATP in May. Right now I am finishing the last 2 university courses for my bachelors over the next 8 weeks. Hopefully taking the university level courses for the past couple of years will help keep me in school mode and it wont seem so bad. Any tips or things to consider as I make this leap? Ive been trying to watch and absorb as much as I can from channels such as yours :)

    • @74gear

      I think you are right that your Brain is still in learning mode it will help. Older guys I have seen struggle haven't been studying for a long time. They're brain is "out of shape" so that will help. As for what to expect on your private its in this video : th-cam.com/video/tsYDdAeXPZ4/w-d-xo.html
      and other than that if you have watched the videos on studying for your checkride I did I think you are in great shape. Just study and prepare and put in the work. You have some life experience which will make you more disciplined to get the studying in and let me know if you have questions along the way. Thanks for your years of service.

    Thanks for the video Kelsey. I'm an electrician, but, at 26, I hate it and I've been thinking about going to flight school.
    I'm not really sure I'd be a good fit for a commercial airline, but the thought of being a Bush pilot up north or a local pilot sounds fun.
    I don't think the airlines would hire someone who legally medicates with MJ. So, that's one reason why I'm not yet confident in the career change.
    Does it seem feasible to pursue this or should I give my hopes up?
    Thanks!

    • @74gear
      @74gear  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      if MJ is marijuana than I am pretty confident the airlines won't be allowed to legally hire you based on DOT restrictions. Same as if you wanted to be a truck driver. That of course is my assumption you could research it more and confirm what I am saying if you want to be sure.

    Do you have any recommendations on how to combat fading? I frequently find myself knowing something a year ago and thinking "man i used to know this why cant i think of it" which sucks in a field that piggy backs off previous fundamentals and knowledge for new concepts.

    • @74gear

      just repetition pounds. You are always going to forget things you don't use. Try to do your training intensely if able and keep practicing so you are fresh.

      You repeat and pay more money. But know that the FAA tracks your record. So, if you fail the 1st time be ready to have to compensate for it. If you fail because of X, better be ready to compensate for it. Score a failing grade and then ace it the second time around. Once your are a pilot do not EVER make that mistake again.

    • @74gear
      @74gear  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't get one for the 74, but usually bigger planes are easier because you have studied many different plane systems before so it makes it easier. Most other airlines that are dealing with newer pilots will have materials to send you before training to pre study. If not asking won't hurt.

      find out how many flight hours a month cfis get at your flight school. if they get at least 75 to 80+ flight hours a month, be a cfi with them for maybe a couple years or so then you'll get to 1500

    • @74gear

      its all part of the simulator training and than you do 1 or 2 annual exams after that so you stay sharp.
