Your point about costs is on point, but remember when they quote you a price for a certificate or rating, they're quoting the price for the minimum number of hours they can conduct the course in. Many people fly more than the minimum to obtain a given certificate or rating. If you know what the minimum number of hours is for a program (and the rate or rates per hour), you need to also ask how many hours on average students are taking to complete that course. I like both honestly, they both have things I like and dislike so I like that I get a variety when I am flying so it doesn't become repetitive too much
One thing to consider with location is time of year. Portland, OR sounds like a bad place to learn but late spring, summer, and early fall is usually ideal for flying. It's usually clear skies and almost no precipitation. They also rarely get thunderstorms

I’m going to be starting my PPL training in May 2024 out of Tampa and I’m looking forward to taking it all the way to the airlines. I really enjoy your videos and appreciate it. Take care.
My son chose Thrust Flight in Addison TX. Their zero time to airline program is full time, 6 days a week, 10ish months or so. First class medical is still processing. March ‘24 is the last class of the old tuition… 99,000 plus 6,500 for multi. Now is 105k plus a grand or two on that multi with 10k down. They have 24+ planes all 2020 or newer, a GameBird, and a full motion RedBird. I call it a good value because 1. He can still live at home which saves $850/mo or more on campus housing 2. It’s still half the price of Embry Riddle’s Daytona campus considering he’d leave with two degrees. 3. A fire station is next to the airport so I can trust a rapid response if resources are ever needed (the medic in me thinks like this!)
Hi Kelsey, my fear of heights has gotten worse in the last couple of years. I have not flown since 2017. I’ve got a flight scheduled in February. Hopefully I can overcome my fear of heights again. I feel when I don’t fly for a while the fear comes back. I’ve recently gotten energized about becoming a pilot from your videos. A career in aviation sounds so fun and adventurous. I’ve been taking a look at flight schools here in Austin Texas. I found a couple. I would only be available for flight school on Saturdays and Sundays. Do you have any recommendations on schools here?
Another thing to that could help us national recognition. Like the AOPA flight training excellence award winners. My school, Jetexe in Sacramento got the award in 2015.
Thanks for including the part about using the G.I. Bill. I'm currently getting out of the military and just got my acceptance to Embry Riddle for the fall. As for using the G.I. Bill for part 141 schools, the G.I. Bill will cover the college portion, however for the flight school portion, you still will have to pay out of pocket. At least that's what I'm going to have to do at ERAU.
I live in Minnesota, there's a lot of flight school here. I really didn't know what to school to pick at all. This video helped me a lot. My two option was ATP Flight School and Inflight Pilot Training. I don't know which one to pick.
I’m addicted to your videos bud!!! Really enjoy them. I’ve been around aviation for almost 7 years now as arff and snow removal, painting, lights blah blah. Anyways what I’m getting at I guess is I want to start flying and the schooling for me will most likely be in anchorage. Do you think flying in during the snow storms early on would give me a advantage later on down the road? I don’t personally know any jet pilots to ask 😀
Choosing a flight school this summer! Starting my research. Price is a big factor for me and my budget is tight. If anyone has advice on striking a balance between good training and cost I’d appreciate that. Thanks for this helpful video!
I’d also consider airspace of home airport and proximate access to the training areas. Last thing you want to do is pay for hours sitting in line to takeoff or cruising out of an overlying Bravo or Charlie just to do maneuvers.
Haha. I am, actually in Dallas, and, currently looking trying to choose a school. a lot of things to think about before making a decision. I will use some of your tips to help make my final decision. Thank you Kelsey.
Cool video. I'm learning to fly at Sibson Aerodrome in the UK, it's twenty minutes from my house and all of the instructors are knowledgeable and experienced, plus extremely friendly and easy to learn from. It was an easy choice in my case but I'm going about getting my PPL and CPL all completely self funded and part by part. Whilst it may take me longer I believe I'll get more experience this way so ultimately it'll make me a better pilot in the long run. Thanks for the video. John
fantastic John, if you are happy and you are learning that's the most important thing. If you ever have questions please let me know! Thanks for subscribing and being part of the 74 crew!

Hey Before I ask you some questions I have to say I’m a very inspired and impressed by your work they are awesome. since you work for a major airline, which is a goal of mine. I was wondering if you knew whether major airlines prefer applicants from a highly ranked aviation college or if it doesn’t matter. I am debating between going to Purdue university which is ranked number 1 in the country and and Vincennes University which is ranked 121. Purdue University will be more expensive for me and Vincennes University wouldn’t cost me as much thanks
A lot of places don't care for the name. A friend of mine went to Embry Riddle and got tossed around for a few years before he could find a steady job. He calls it Embry Rip Off lmao
74 Gear I know I will definitely have fun because I am coming from the bottom ( currently a third world country) and was waiting for this my whole life so I moved to US just to get enough money to start my career. Thank you for your awesome and very helpful videos. Really appreciated. Keep up the good work!
Good Stuff. Add to it, WHAT IS YOUR GOAL? I've been a PPSEL for 30 years. Now I want to become a CFI, with emphasis on tailwheel and aerobatics. Many schools push you into twins after the instrument rating for people looking to become airline pilots. I just want a single for the complex and high performance endorsement's. Found one at KAFW (surprised at how few there are or at least advertise). So once all my written work is done will be relocating there for awhile. Visited them once, but will sit down with the Chief Instructor before commitment. My personal experience has been most customer service at FBO's stinks. It's not until you have taken lessons or rented several time's before it improves. Always been a problem in my opinion.
@@74gear Passed the Commercial written (87%), pretty happy considering last written (instrument) was like 14 years ago. Set a goal for Instructor written Mid-march. Will add the AGI too. The final written FOI by Tax Day, we all know when that is.
At KHWD, there were five flight schools to choose from at the time. Two were scary. One never had anybody there. One was owned by a guy who only wanted wealthy students. The last one had plenty of instructors, plenty of planes, reputable mechanics, etc. The only downside was the owner was an A-hole. I interviewed five instructors before I even did my first introductory flight. The instructor I picked was a 65 year old PH.D. astrophysicist. This guy had every rating possible, helicopters too. He'd seen it all. He was really hard on me, but that was what I wanted. Not only did I get top notch training, we became good friends too. Mal has since passed away, but it was a high point in my life.
HI Kelsey, I've flown gliders with a club down in NZ before. Looking at going down there to get my glider cert, i'm hoping that gives me the core skills to then add my motor cert. I have commercial GA flying as a goal - seems like a long way to that goal. I like my day job, so not looking for a career change
Hi Kelsey, I really appreciate your videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us! I was wondering what your thoughts are on ATP flight school. Have you heard any good things about them? Thank you!
Studying in central Ohio and wanted to see which you would choose, a flight school with more planes (6 c172s vs 2) and sponsored by republic or a school that is cheaper ($163 an hour total vs. $220 an hour total) and AOPA recognized
I thought it was funny that you mentioned Dallas in your video. I plan on attending American Flyers. Was going to go to ATP, but they did not want to train me. AF took me up in a 172RG with full fuel, we had no problems. Granted I am loosing weight so I can learn to fly and maybe be more attractive to airlines. Most of this school are military guys. I went for my demo flight, found out I was ill prepared even studying Gold Seal ground school.
ya there is a LOT to learn in aviation Christopher, but if you put your effort in it you can learn what you need to be successful, let me know if you ever have questions but a lot of videos in here should be able to help.
@@74gear I have many hours in a commercial jet, more in a 747 as a passenger. The G's I felt in that 172 I never felt in a big jet. I can not quit thinking about it.
I start to study in Neuquén, Argentina, and is the only school in miles miles away, other opcion is on line school, but you have to travel so far to the test, so i pick Neuquén, sorry for my low level inglish. Cya.
I did some flight training back in the early 90s at Hanscom AFB in Bedford, MA. I'm currently thinking about going for my PPL and going to see if there's still a school there. Just unsure which type of school I should choose for a PPL
@@74gear your welcome, these videos are quite a powerful inspiration, i may only be 13 (3 days away from 14) but i already have the ambition to be a pilot, and i cant wait to give it a shot! :D
I'm just starting out with flying lessons and learned how to do a good preflight on the 172. I wondered, how do airline pilots do a preflight? Do you have to get out and check the flaps and ailerons and sump fuel and stuff too? What's a preflight look like for a 747?
well we don't sump fuel on the 74, but I am hoping this year to be able to make a preflight video. No matter what every plane you fly will need a preflight walk around.
A great question! We do a visual inspection and are looking for similar things as you do (cut tires, leaks, loose fasteners, damage, etc.) Obviously some planes are very large and we don't have as much hands-on inspections but there are a number of required items you have to check and we are evaluated on it each time we go to training. As for sumping, maintenance does that periodically on a specified schedule. Though water in fuel is never a good thing, jets are less vulnerable to it than internal combustion engines. The maintenance guys also do their own walkarounds and inspections in maintenance stations and are always a great resource. I know there are some good walkaround videos on TH-cam. If I find a good one I'll link it here. (It may not be a 747 though!)
Hi Howard! I found this video of an A-320 walkaround. You can look for other ones and other planes; some are very good and some leave a bit to be desired. Hope this helps! th-cam.com/video/2B7Ku9ufxTk/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the tips! I live in Montreal and will be going to flight school after i finish my engineering degree in April. Haven't yet decided on a flight school, but will definitely use your info. Any suggestions pertaining to Canadian schools?
Stumbled upon one of your videos and subscribed, which I'm glad I did. Couple questions: Do you still need a 4 year degree for regional airlines? And as an international pilot, do you need kind of special visa or have you ever had any problem with the custom at the airports you flew to?
you don't need a 4 year degree for the regionals I talk about that here: th-cam.com/video/telK_KC8uqE/w-d-xo.html and I have a crew visa for a few countries but the airlines handle that for the pilots!
I am not really sure I would be the pilot to give you that insight, I know some about the EASA conversion but not a lot on the program. However I think a lot of the same rules apply that I talked about here SR... let me know if you have any specific questions.
what I would do would be work backwards from your goal airline and that will let you know which one will be best for you... like I explain in this video... th-cam.com/video/SOIY05qreRc/w-d-xo.html
Hi Kelsey~ I really like your video sooooo funny and very useful to me.^^ I’m in Australia now.I want to learn fly.But I don’t know which city learn fly best. Do you have any flight school recommend? Thank you !!!
From my personal experience, I can advise on which flight school not to choose, if it appears on your short list. It was rubbish and didn’t deliver any of the requirements I had pre booked and made excuse after excuse and strung me along. I travelled from the UK to the US for the privilege too.
So I'm only in the very beginning stages of research, to the point that I'm still not even committed to going to flight school and more just interested. The video briefly went over financial options, how common is it for a school to offer some means of financial aid/loans? Is that something I should expect most schools to offer or assist with or should I be expecting to have to look around for one that does?
Hopefully everything goes well for you, I tried to get in but they told me I had to wait a year and basically beg to get in and to pay 120k. I took my business to another school.
Duuuudddeeee, did you get in? I got in the TSTC Waco, Pilot training program Supposed to start this January, I barely got notified 2 weeks ago. I live 7 hours away from Waco can't even find housing need more money, wasn't expecting to get in this spring. I hate to say it but I think I'm just gonna work full time spring semester, save money and start flight training in the summer. Hope to see you there in the future.
Hi Kelsey, love your videos. Potential new pilot here. Have you heard any real life info on liberty university flight schools? I’m looking for a flight school that is accredited and that is closest one to me. I have scheduled an appointment with the school already, just wondering if you have any real world knowledge of them.
Best flight school ever is the one where the grizzzled old instructors are carried outta the bar at the end of a days flying. I'm 61yrs old and am extremely lucky to have been taught by ex RAF and airline pilot instructors when I were a young lad.
@@74gear Sorry to hear but, you are doing an excellent job sir with your vlog, full respect to you. Hey I’m a big fan of your TH-cam channel. hope all is well. I would like to go to flight school and I am trying to decide if I should attend ATP Flight school of JetBlue’s Gateway Select. ATP is 85,000 and JetBlue’s is $110,000 but comes with a guarantee of employment with JetBlue as a first officer after so no need to start at a regional upon graduation. Could you tell me what seems like a better deal? Thanks for your time, Julian
Hi I want to become pilot. I planning to go LU Liberty of University but I don't know if the college is good to lorne. Maybe you know if these college is good to become pilot.
You fly the classic 747? The inset image was the 100 prototype - nitpicking aside great upload in my day the choice was clear, the school that I hung out at for most of my childhood who let me sweep the hangars and wash their aircraft was the one, I rode a bicycle to training and had to train on Samba composite low wings one of the first LSA types certified for PPL and hour building - later on very dodgy 172's and I got 'free' ground school as well
A brief of what I'm doing. Currently buy all the courses from king school. Ground school you know. And I have a very decent simulator using pilotedge as ATC. I'm considering on buying a aircraft to do my training. I'm and AP mechanic but I'm 30 years old. I would love to hear your thoughts.
I’m considering a career change to go fly commercial. I had originally thought I’d get my private license at a local school and then go to a fast track school to finish my training and certifications. When I started to dig a bit more, I discovered I could do most/all of my training at the local schools and I was wondering which direction you’d go. Is it more beneficial to go to a fast track school like ATP or stick with the smaller local flight school?
Picking a school now seems easy after watching this video. But how about the medical certificate? Should I get a first-class medical before starting flight school, or third-class and upgrade it as I climb through the aviation ladder?
After a flight school, I went to a flying club with a CFIs. The flying club was WAY better. The CFIs had many times the experience than the flight school CFIs.
I'm looking to switch careers (at age 37) and get my ATPL. Not sure what you mean by using flying club... you did this after getting your PPL or while earning? If you could elaborate I would appreciate it, thanks.
Super informative, but say it’s important for me to become a flight instructor to earn those 1000-1500 hours, how hard is it to get a job as an instructor?
Nolan Ball It is, usually airlines won’t hire anyone below 1000 hours. You don’t necesarily need to be an instructor though, it can be any job flying light aircraft.
Kelsey, did you go to Dallas for flight school? Because my brother went there and I am considering getting a private license, and maybe if my motivation brings me farther, I’ll go for commercial as well.
What are the regulations on colorblindness in pilots? I know you need the ability to recognize colors in order to safely operate the aircraft, but is there a certain allowable level of colorblind? For me, I’m only a little color blind. I only have trouble differentiating certain colors. But I don’t know what the regulations are like. So if you know anything about this I’d love some insight! Thanks! (Love all your videos btw)
Awesome info im trying to attain as much knowledge about this field as I can. Is a bachelor's really necessary for airline companies, or can you still get hired on with the required flight hours?
In case you have not found the answer yet, a bachelors is absolutely required if you want to fly for a major airline. If you are fine flying for a regional then most will take you without right now. But do keep in mind you are always going to be less desirable than someone with a degree. Online schools are cheap and a great option to fix this problem.
Amazing how many people ask questions with obvious answers because they made no effort to do any research. Especially asking for schools in specific states and countries that you probably wouldn't know. My question is: are employers less likely to hire a part 61 graduate than a 141 graduate? Or is flight time the only thing that matters?
So I dont know if you know yet but when you did Hollywood vs reality on the air force one the plane is in Ohio if I am correct in the Air Force museum in Dayton
I toured 3 flights school and I really felt comfortable at one so I’m going for a demo flight in a week
hows it going?
Please could you tell the flight school you choose...I'm really confused on which to choose as am looking to start next month
How’s it going, man?
For those keeping track, Kelsey blinks at 4:45. I would make a drinking game out of this but all our beers would get warm.

Embry Riddle? Good school. What campus? Florida or Arizona?
You the best. I’ll do my PPL checkride soon. From now I thinking to find another flight school for my IR.
Appreciate the 4k video and audio upgrade!
trying to slowly improve the quality, thanks Mukhund!
The is excellent advice about any school or training program.
I live in Minnesota, there's a lot of flight school here. I really didn't know what to school to pick at all. This video helped me a lot. My two option was ATP Flight School and Inflight Pilot Training. I don't know which one to pick.
Try Huffman Aviation. I learned to fly at the school and eventually worked as a pilot for American Airlines within a few months.
Awesome been waiting on this!!
great Alexis, hopefully its helpful for you to keep laying out your plans!
Great video on right time . Thank you very much. By the way love the new intro and editing. Happy to see your channel growing .😊
thanks Larance... I appreciate it, ya we are slowly growing hopefully people keep sharing it!
Brilliant speech
Great info needed this, thanks Kelsey ! I am going to apply for academy of aviation in farmingdale, Ny. I believe that’s a great school.
awesome Avi, glad you have one selected thanks for watching and being part of the 74 crew!
Any updates on the school?
great information 👍 learning so much
Thanks Jay, I appreciate it!
Choosing a flight school this summer! Starting my research. Price is a big factor for me and my budget is tight. If anyone has advice on striking a balance between good training and cost I’d appreciate that. Thanks for this helpful video!
The best video I have seen so far! I live in Canada but these steps are definitely gonna help me 😍Thank you.
happy to hear it Nitu, thanks for watching and subscribing.
I’d also consider airspace of home airport and proximate access to the training areas. Last thing you want to do is pay for hours sitting in line to takeoff or cruising out of an overlying Bravo or Charlie just to do maneuvers.
thats a very valid point Sean! I should have talked more about that in the location part!
Haha. I am, actually in Dallas, and, currently looking trying to choose a school. a lot of things to think about before making a decision. I will use some of your tips to help make my final decision. Thank you Kelsey.
Where did you end up going? I'm in Arlington, trying to figure out where I want go go
@@74gear I will. Thanks! 😀
Very good videos Kelsey. Learned a lot! Thx
Thank you so much for uploading such videos . They are so helpful .
happy to help Fleur... let me know if you have any questions!
I went to 3 schools. One for my private, then my commercial/ME/ILS, then another school for my LR-Jet rating
Timestamp 3:46 Hello Kelsey;
There is a glitch in this video, this glitch might be happening because of a high CPU usage, that ur pc is skipping frames, or more likely there is a problem with a surge at ur hotel.
But ask your editor he should know how to avoid this glitch in the future.
Otherwise, your cinematography is always good your audio is good and your editing is sharp (It's a little hard but ok) I have been watching a lot of your video.
Always interesting topics and the host is very easy on the eyes !
All the best Shaun of NYC
Student Pilot in Upstate NY! I can back the initial stages of private. It's taken a long time...
PvtDipwad thx
Awesome video as always! Helped me a lot as well, keep up the good work😊
Thanks Alpha, glad I could be of service to help answer some questions!
Right on time boss. Getting ready to follow! Thanx
thanks bizi, have fun in flight school thanks for joining the 74 crew!
Always been a problem in my opinion.
ya I did a goals video at the start of the year but good to see you have some already planned out. Let me know how it all goes Michael!
@@74gear Passed the Commercial written (87%), pretty happy considering last written (instrument) was like 14 years ago. Set a goal for Instructor written Mid-march. Will add the AGI too. The final written FOI by Tax Day, we all know when that is.
@74, thank you for mentioning current #GIBill situation!
For my fellow vets, just know most times you will need to pay out of pocket for PPL. Everything else after that will be covered.
thanks for dropping that bit of knowledge shave, I appreciate you doing that!
What universities do you recommend to utilize the GI Bill to complete a 4-year Bachelor degree part 141 flight program?
@@DallasFort1857 Liberty University has a fantastic program. Christian School though.
@JH-in5oq Did I mention anything about that? No. Some people, not me, maybe put off by a Christian college.
I am just starting my training on ppl. I am learning a lot from your chanel
thanks Betty glad you are enjoying it and thanks for being part of the 74 crew!!
What are your thoughts on airline-ran flight schools, such as United's Aviate Academy?
You're so helpful! Thank you you Kelly!
Sure JT, glad I could be of help !

@@74gear Just started my PPL, so I have enjoyed hearing what you've had to say about learning to fly!
very cool thats part of the reason I am making the videos, happy to help!
K, Always great Vid's, Thanks for taking the time to post it, be safe
thanks Mile, appreciate it as always!
Awesome video learned a lot
good RC, if you ever have questions just let me know
Studying in central Ohio and wanted to see which you would choose, a flight school with more planes (6 c172s vs 2) and sponsored by republic or a school that is cheaper ($163 an hour total vs.
Very informative. Thanks a lot. Hope you get more subscribers 😉
slowly growing eventually we will have a big channel I think!
Ha! Kelsey was really revved up in this one 😀!
I start to study in Neuquén, Argentina, and is the only school in miles miles away, other opcion is on line school, but you have to travel so far to the test, so i pick Neuquén, sorry for my low level inglish. Cya.
Hey Kelsey I really need help on what’s the best flight school to go to and what do you recommend
Great watching your videos !! I have a question ... What is the average cost that I would be spending on a flight school ?
I did some flight training back in the early 90s at Hanscom AFB in Bedford, MA. I'm currently thinking about going for my PPL and going to see if there's still a school there. Just unsure which type of school I should choose for a PPL
Another awesome vid Super K! Hope I get to buy u a beer someday.

@@74gear thank you very much, and i'm happy yo be here, a part of this amazing community you created

Thanks for the tips! I live in Montreal and will be going to flight school after i finish my engineering degree in April. Haven't yet decided on a flight school, but will definitely use your info. Any suggestions pertaining to Canadian schools?
just do your research like I talked about in here...watch the video on learning to fly as well: th-cam.com/video/tsYDdAeXPZ4/w-d-xo.html
Amazing advice! Any chance of a video on UK pilot schools?
I am not really sure I would be the pilot to give you that insight, I know some about the EASA conversion but not a lot on the program. However I think a lot of the same rules apply that I talked about here SR... let me know if you have any specific questions.
@@74gear I was mainly wondering what the difference is between ATPL, MPL and CPL. If you happen to know anything about that, that would be great
what I would do would be work backwards from your goal airline and that will let you know which one will be best for you... like I explain in this video... th-cam.com/video/SOIY05qreRc/w-d-xo.html
@@74gear Thanks a lot! Live your videos!!
Im hoping to get into Texas State Technical college in Waco, TX for my training in January

The hardest part is not getting ripped off! Cheers, great vids.
Best flight school ever is the one where the grizzzled old instructors are carried outta the bar at the end of a days flying.
I'm 61yrs old and am extremely lucky to have been taught by ex RAF and airline pilot instructors when I were a young lad.
its definitely nice when your instructors have some real world flying but right now with the pilots shortage there just isn't a lot of that!
@@74gear Sorry to hear but, you are doing an excellent job sir with your vlog, full respect to you. Oh id have to just go to one nearest me.
I think I'm gonna go to collage in Denver
Hi I want to become pilot. I planning to go LU Liberty of University but I don't know if the college is good to lorne. Maybe you know if these college is good to become pilot.
You fly the classic 747? The inset image was the 100 prototype - nitpicking aside great upload in my day the choice was clear, the school that I hung out at for most of my childhood who let me sweep the hangars and wash their aircraft was the one, I rode a bicycle to training and had to train on Samba composite low wings one of the first LSA types certified for PPL and hour building - later on very dodgy 172's and I got 'free' ground school as well
well that was just a graphic, the intro has a -8 which I fly and my profile picture is a 400. No I don't fly the classic.
I am working on obtaining my ppl with goal of atp for 747
Hi, I'm from Honduras and I will like you to recommend me a school of aviation
well you watched the video, you can do the research and see which is a good fit for you.
What are your thoughts on American Airlines Cadet Academy??? Thanks!
I’m currently stressed out about school because I find physics quite hard and I don’t know if I’ll pass it when I Do my exams
@@sportsfails4998 I'm trying to become a pilot some day. Question do you need a bachelors to become a major or it all depends.
Do you have a video of how much does it cost to become a pilot???
Amazing how many people ask questions with obvious answers because they made no effort to do any research. Especially asking for schools in specific states and countries that you probably wouldn't know. My question is: are employers less likely to hire a part 61 graduate than a 141 graduate? Or is flight time the only thing that matters?
So I dont know if you know yet but when you did Hollywood vs reality on the air force one the plane is in Ohio if I am correct in the Air Force museum in Dayton
